Aquarius's Instrument Science Data System (ISDS) Automated to Acquire, Process, Trend Data and Produce Radiometric System Assessment Reports

The Aquarius Radiometer, a subsystem of the Aquarius Instrument required a data acquisition ground system to support calibration and radiometer performance assessment. To support calibration and compose performance assessments, we developed an automated system which uploaded raw data to a ftp server and saved raw and processed data to a database. This paper details the overall functionalities of the Aquarius Instrument Science Data System (ISDS) and the individual electrical ground support equipment (EGSE) which produced data files that were infused into the ISDS. Real time EGSEs include an ICDS Simulator, Calibration GSE, Labview controlled power supply, and a chamber data acquisition system. ICDS Simulator serves as a test conductor primary workstation, collecting radiometer housekeeping (HK) and science data and passing commands and HK telemetry collection request to the radiometer. Calibration GSE (Radiometer Active Test Source) provides source choice from multiple targets for the radiometer external calibration. Power Supply GSE, controlled by labview, provides real time voltage and current monitoring of the radiometer. And finally the chamber data acquisition system produces data reflecting chamber vacuum pressure, thermistor temperatures, AVG and watts. Each GSE system produce text based data files every two to six minutes and automatically copies the data files to the Central Archiver PC. The Archiver PC stores the data files, schedules automated uploads of these files to an external FTP server, and accepts request to copy all data files to the ISDS for offline data processing and analysis. Aquarius Radiometer ISDS contains PHP and MATLab programs to parse, process and save all data to a MySQL database. Analysis tools (MATLab programs) in the ISDS system are capable of displaying radiometer science, telemetry and auxiliary data in near real time as well as performing data analysis and producing automated performance assessment reports of the Aquarius Radiometer.

COMPASS-FME Synoptic Site Characterization

This dataset contains soil biogeochemical and physicochemical characterization data for the COMPASS-FME synoptic sites. This dataset also contains data for the paper Patel et al. 2025 "Transition zones at the changing coastal terrestrial-aquatic interface", https://doi.org/10.1029/2025JG008978.Coastal soils are a significant but highly uncertain component of global biogeochemical cycles. These systems experience unique spatial and temporal variability in biogeochemical processes, driven by wetland-to-upland gradients and hydrological fluctuations. We studied drivers of coastal soil variability (a) at regional scales and (b) across transects from upland forest to wetland, in two contrasting regions — Lake Erie, a freshwater lacustrine system, and Chesapeake Bay, a saltwater estuarine system. Salinity-related analytes were a key driver of soil variability, not just in the saltwater system, but surprisingly, also in the freshwater system. We had hypothesized linear trends in biogeochemical parameters along the TAI – however, contrary to expectations, transition soils were not consistently intermediate between upland and wetland endmembers; the non-monotonic trends of carbon, phosphorus, iron along our transects suggest that these are key analytes to study in our regions. Rapidly changing soil factors across coastal gradients provide insights into which soil processes may act as precursors to ecosystem shifts. Our comprehensive soil characterization across the coastal transects provides essential data for mechanistic modeling of ecosystem dynamics. The data are provided as processed, csv files. Raw data and processing scripts can be accessed on GitHub (https://github.com/COMPASS-DOE/cmps-soil_characterization).A note on the nomenclature: the experimental design represents three points along the coastal gradient -- upland, transition, and wetland. "wetland" is referred to as "marsh" in the corresponding paper. The two terms can be used interchangeably for the sites in this study.

Satellite Relay Telemetry of Seismic Data in Earthquake Prediction and Control

The Satellite Telemetry Earthquake Monitoring Program was started to evaluate the applicability of satellite relay telemetry in the collection of seismic data from a large number of dense seismograph clusters laid out along the major fault systems of western North America. Prototype clusters utilizing phone-line telemetry were then being installed by the National Center for Earthquake Research in 3 regions along the San Andreas fault in central California; and the experience of installing and operating the clusters and in reducing and analyzing the seismic data from them was to provide the raw materials for evaluation in the satellite relay telemetry project. The principal advantages of the satellite relay system over commercial telephone or microwave systems were: (1) it could be made less prone to massive failure during a major earthquake; (2) it could be extended readily into undeveloped regions; and (3) it could provide flexible, uniform communications over large sections of major global tectonic zones. Fundamental characteristics of a communications system to cope with the large volume of raw data collected by a short-period seismograph network are discussed.

Field tests of the real-data acquisiton system for the NASA-LaRC differential absorption lidar

A data acquisition system (DAS) for the NASA/LaRC Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) was documented. This DAS is a dual LSI 11/23 set up where one computer retrieves data from the digitizers and other peripheral units, stores that data on magnetic tape, generates aerosol grayscales on a Trilog printer and passes data to the second computer. The second computer is dedicated to real time displays of the data in a variety of modes from raw data to range resolved ozone profiles. The DIAL DAS also has several new features.

An equivalent layer magnetization model for Australia based on Magsat data

An equivalent layer magnetization model for Australia and adjacent oceanic areas is presented. The model is obtained by linear inversion of Magsat anomaly data measured in the altitude range 325-550 km. The anomaly data set has been isolated from the raw data set by use of models of the core field and very long wavelength external fields, and is internally consistent. Certain major structural features of the Australian continent are geographically associated with magnetization anomalies. A first-order difference is seen between the Tasman Zone and the Precambrian cratonic areas: magnetization anomalies are much more subdued in the former, possibly reflecting a shallowing of the Curie isotherm within the crust. A profile of the vertical integral of magnetization is presented for a crustal section extending from the Gawler Block to the southeast coast. It is shown that the magnetization variations are probably due partly, but not wholly, to depth to Curie isotherm variations; gross magnetization variations among at least three distinct crustal units must be involved.

Performability modeling based on real data: A casestudy

Described is a measurement-based performability model based on error and resource usage data collected on a multiprocessor system. A method for identifying the model structure is introduced and the resulting model is validated against real data. Model development from the collection of raw data to the estimation of the expected reward is described. Both normal and error behavior of the system are characterized. The measured data show that the holding times in key operational and error states are not simple exponentials and that a semi-Markov process is necessary to model the system behavior. A reward function, based on the service rate and the error rate in each state, is then defined in order to estimate the performability of the system and to depict the cost of different types of errors.

A voice-actuated wind tunnel model leak checking system

A computer program has been developed that improves the efficiency of wind tunnel model leak checking. The program uses a voice recognition unit to relay a technician's commands to the computer. The computer, after receiving a command, can respond to the technician via a voice response unit. Information about the model pressure orifice being checked is displayed on a gas-plasma terminal. On command, the program records up to 30 seconds of pressure data. After the recording is complete, the raw data and a straight line fit of the data are plotted on the terminal. This allows the technician to make a decision on the integrity of the orifice being checked. All results of the leak check program are stored in a database file that can be listed on the line printer for record keeping purposes or displayed on the terminal to help the technician find unchecked orifices. This program allows one technician to check a model for leaks instead of the two or three previously required.

Understanding Solar Energetic Particles With STEREO HET

The project evaluates solar energetic particles (SEPs) in the Heliosphere utilizing in situ data from the STEREO mission. More specifically, raw data from the High Energy Telescope (HET) corresponding to the abundances and energy spectra of electrons, protons, He, and heavier nuclei was extracted. C codes were modified and written to analyze Pulse heights and fluxes in a readable format. Plots of the data were formulated in Python. Low fluxes of heavier elements prompted a revaluation of the onboard binning process. New selection criteria will be generated to orient the particle energy loss in the detectors with the expected locations of the energy tracks corresponding to each element.

Baseline Characterization Database Verification Report ? NBG-17 Billet V104

The purpose of this report is to present data collected in the Baseline Graphite Characterization Program, which is directly tasked with supporting the Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL’s) research and development efforts on the Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) Program. This program populates a comprehensive database that reflects the baseline properties of nuclear-grade graphite regarding individual grade, billet, and position within individual billets. The physical- and mechanical-property information being collected will be transferred to the Nuclear Data Management and Analysis System (NDMAS), and that database will help populate the handbook of property data available to member nations of the Generation-IV International Forum. Transfer of these data from the applicable technical lead to the dissemination databases available to other end users requires a full review of the test procedures and data-collection efforts through an analysis of the multiple summary spreadsheets and values being collected. This report represents the analysis for NBG-17 Billet V104 and facilitates release of associated data to the NDMAS custodians. Millions of raw data points have been collected during testing and quantification analyses for these billets. The summary scalar property values and supplementary traceability data are collected into comprehensive spreadsheets. Data sets are composed of single billets of graphite for any given grade, organized by mechanical test-specimen type, and further subdivided into individual spreadsheet tabs according to the specific test or evaluation being performed. A direct analysis of properties was not conducted, and this report does not provide information on the validity or performance characteristics of the graphite itself. Rather, this report is intended as a verification of the completeness of actual data collected in accordance with PLN-3467, “Baseline Graphite Characterization Plan: Electromechanical Testing,” [1] and PLN-3348 “Graphite Mechanical Testing” [2] and their representation of the measurement and test results with sole regard to the graphite billets under evaluation.

Wavenumber Domain Focusing of Squinted SAR Data with a Curved Orbit Geometry

Synthetic Aperture Radar systems provide raw data that need focusing to achieve full-resolution imaging. Current SAR applications, including interferometry, require accurate, phase-preserving, and precisely co-registered coherent images over large ground swaths with the highest achievable resolution. In addition to these challenges, stripmap SAR data may be acquired with an off-broadside (squinted) geometry, either by design or through platform motion. The precise batch focusing of these large aperture and wide bandwidth data sets is known to require a 2D frequency processing approach. The standard wave domain focusing algorithm, however, is only exact for data acquired on a rectilinear trajectory. We investigate a generalization of the standard omega-k focusing formulation that allows curved data acquisition tracks. The new formulation can be used in conjunction with a known extension for conical, squinted imaging grids. The approximations necessary to allow the generalized geometry are analyzed to determine the range of applicability of the proposed algorithm. The theory is validated using data simulated with parameters similar to the UAVSAR L-band SAR system.

Moltensaltpropnet

MoltenSaltPropnet is a physics-informed machine learning framework that aims to predict the thermophysical properties of molten fluoride and chloride salt mixtures, which are crucial for the design and safety of Generation IV molten salt reactors. The code processes data from the Molten-Salt Thermal Properties Database (MSTDB-TP) and the Janz compendium, converting critically evaluated correlations into fast, differentiable surrogate models for density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity across 448 distinct salt systems. The implementation consists of several key components: 1. Data Curation: The code parses and cleans the raw data, normalizing elemental mole fractions and extracting relevant regression coefficients for various thermophysical properties. 2. Feature Engineering: It generates fixed-length numerical descriptors that encapsulate the composition and temperature, incorporating polynomial interaction terms and dimensionality-reduction techniques to optimize model performance. 3. Coefficient Learning: Four different machine learning architectures are employed: a deep residual network (ResNet), a Kolmogorov–Arnold network (KAN), a sparsity-inducing neural network (SNN), and classical regression models. Each model learns to predict coefficients that define the temperature-dependent correlations for the thermophysical properties. 4. Property Reconstruction: The predicted coefficients are used to compute temperature-dependent property values, ensuring positivity and monotonic trends through a composite loss function that enforces physical constraints. 5. User Interface: An open-source web application enables users to filter the database, train task-specific models, and visualize the results, allowing for rapid exploration of candidate salt mixtures. MoltenSaltPropnet bridges the gap between limited experimental data and high-fidelity reactor simulations, providing a powerful tool for researchers in the field of molten salt reactors and advanced nuclear energy systems.

Ocean Data Acquisition System

The Ocean Data Acquisition System (ODAS) is a low cost instrument with potential commercial application. It is easily mounted on a small aircraft and flown over the coastal zone ocean to remotely measure sea surface temperature and three channels of ocean color information. From this data, chlorophyll levels can be derived for use by ocean scientists, fisheries, and environmental offices. Data can be transmitted to shipboard for real-time use with sea truth measurements, ocean productivity estimates and fishing fleet direction. The aircraft portion of the system has two primary instruments: an IR radiometer to measure sea surface temperature and a three channel visible spectro-radiometer for 460, 490, and 520 nm wavelength measurements from which chlorophyll concentration can be derived. The aircraft package contains a LORAN-C unit for aircraft location information, clock, on-board data processor and formatter, digital data storage, packet radio terminal controller, and radio transceiver for data transmission to a ship. The shipboard package contains a transceiver, packet terminal controller, data processing and storage capability, and printer. Both raw data and chlorophyll concentrations are available for real-time analysis.

Lunar Surface Arrays

During the latter half of the 1980's three concepts for low frequency arrays on the Moon were independently studied for NASA, leading to two workshops in 1990. The main technical challenges were those of deploying the array on the Moon, and of correlating the data on the Moon or returning all the raw data to Earth.

Advanced Query and Data Mining Capabilities for MaROS

The Mars Relay Operational Service (MaROS) comprises a number of tools to coordinate, plan, and visualize various aspects of the Mars Relay network. These levels include a Web-based user interface, a back-end "ReSTlet" built in Java, and databases that store the data as it is received from the network. As part of MaROS, the innovators have developed and implemented a feature set that operates on several levels of the software architecture. This new feature is an advanced querying capability through either the Web-based user interface, or through a back-end REST interface to access all of the data gathered from the network. This software is not meant to replace the REST interface, but to augment and expand the range of available data. The current REST interface provides specific data that is used by the MaROS Web application to display and visualize the information; however, the returned information from the REST interface has typically been pre-processed to return only a subset of the entire information within the repository, particularly only the information that is of interest to the GUI (graphical user interface). The new, advanced query and data mining capabilities allow users to retrieve the raw data and/or to perform their own data processing. The query language used to access the repository is a restricted subset of the structured query language (SQL) that can be built safely from the Web user interface, or entered as freeform SQL by a user. The results are returned in a CSV (Comma Separated Values) format for easy exporting to third party tools and applications that can be used for data mining or user-defined visualization and interpretation. This is the first time that a service is capable of providing access to all cross-project relay data from a single Web resource. Because MaROS contains the data for a variety of missions from the Mars network, which span both NASA and ESA, the software also establishes an access control list (ACL) on each data record in the database repository to enforce user access permissions through a multilayered approach.

Single-cell chromatin accessibility and cis -regulatory element analyses in plants using the scPlantReg platform

Understanding gene regulation is fundamental to plant improvement, but the lack of plant-specific single-cell assay for transposase-accessible chromatin using sequencing (scATAC-seq) frameworks and cross-species databases has limited insights into cell-type-specific cellular regulation. Here we present ‘scPlantReg’, an integrated framework and database for plant scATAC-seq data. scPlantReg supports end-to-end analyses from raw data processing to biological interpretation and features ‘scATACtor’, a supervised machine-learning approach that outperforms existing tools for cell-type annotation. We applied scPlantReg to pearl millet to characterize cell-type-specific chromatin accessibility and identify validated activating and repressing accessible chromatin regions (ACRs), revealing WRKY transcription factors as potential regulators of xylem development. Furthermore, we reanalysed scATAC-seq datasets from 8 plant species, spanning 11 tissues and multiple developmental stages, enabling cross-species comparisons. Furthermore, these analyses uncovered conserved regulatory programmes, including AP2/EREBP-associated ACRs linked to cell wall development and cell-type-conserved TFs across grasses. Collectively, scPlantReg provides a general framework and resource for comparative regulatory analysis in plants.
