Airborne water vapor DIAL research: System development and field measurements

This paper describes the airborne differential absorption lidar (DIAL) system developed at the NASA Langley Research Center for remote measurement of water vapor (H2O) and aerosols in the lower atmosphere. The airborne H2O DIAL system was flight tested aboard the NASA Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) Electra aircraft in three separate field deployments between 1989 and 1991. Atmospheric measurements were made under a variety of atmospheric conditions during the flight tests, and several modifications were implemented during this development period to improve system operation. A brief description of the system and major modifications will be presented, and the most significant atmospheric observations will be described.

Research and development program for the development of advanced time-temperature dependent constitutive relationships. Volume 1: Theoretical discussion

The results of a 10-month research and development program for the development of advanced time-temperature constitutive relationships are presented. The program included (1) the effect of rate of change of temperature, (2) the development of a term to include time independent effects, and (3) improvements in computational efficiency. It was shown that rate of change of temperature could have a substantial effect on the predicted material response. A modification to include time-independent effects, applicable to many viscoplastic constitutive theories, was shown to reduce to classical plasticity. The computation time can be reduced by a factor of two if self-adaptive integration is used when compared to an integration using ordinary forward differences. During the course of the investigation, it was demonstrated that the most important single factor affecting the theoretical accuracy was the choice of material parameters.

Power Autonomy Research and Development Environment (PARDE) User’s Guide Version 0.1.2

This document is a user's guide for the Power Autonomy Research and Development Environment (PARDE) software package. PARDE is a version of NASA's Autonomous Power Control (APC) software that can be used to evaluate fault management and automatic power system reconfiguration algorithms in a relevant system without having to fully develop all the supporting software. Software items included are a set of C++ class source files representing simplified fault management and reconfiguration logic, a power system simulation representing a notional architecture for NASA's Gateway vehicle, a web-based graphical user interface for running and testing the simulation and APC, a Docker-based automatic setup script for a development environment, and a user's guide.

KSC Education Technology Research and Development Plan

Educational technology is facilitating new approaches to teaching and learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Cognitive research is beginning to inform educators about how students learn providing a basis for design of more effective learning environments incorporating technology. At the same time, access to computers, the Internet and other technology tools are becoming common features in K-20 classrooms. Encouraged by these developments, STEM educators are transforming traditional STEM education into active learning environments that hold the promise of enhancing learning. This document illustrates the use of technology in STEM education today, identifies possible areas of development, links this development to the NASA Strategic Plan, and makes recommendations for the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Education Office for consideration in the research, development, and design of new educational technologies and applications.

The Knowledge-based Digital Platform Concept for Advanced Air Mobility Research and Development

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center (LaRC) is spearheading an innovative digital engineering approach to integrate, communicate, and facilitate the research of multi-modal transportation systems. The Knowledge-based Digital Platform (KbDP) is a concept being developed that ties the workflows of Project Managers (PM), Principal Investigators (PI), and System Engineers (SE) together across organizational boundaries. The overarching vision for the KbDP Concept for AAM R&D is a substantial undertaking. The initial concept and implementation will focus on UAM operations to tractably learn and adjust the concept with a manageable database. Lessons learned and best practices with a smaller scope will enable successful scalability to AAM R&D or even to the entire modes of transportation and logistics. The UAM vision is one in which advanced technologies and new operational procedures enable practical and cost-effective air transport as an integrated mode of movement of people and goods throughout metropolitan areas. Initial implementation of three KbDP concepts of use shows promising benefits to NASA’s Air Traffic Management-Exploration (ATM-X) UAM Airspace Subproject. It is envisioned that the KbDP will manage an information database defined by mathematical, data science, and system engineering principles. AIML algorithms play a vital role in this KbDP concept by extracting meaningful knowledge from the information database, which the human user leverages to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their research greatly.

Research and development program for non-linear structural modeling with advanced time-temperature dependent constitutive relationships

Results of a 20-month research and development program for nonlinear structural modeling with advanced time-temperature constitutive relationships are reported. The program included: (1) the evaluation of a number of viscoplastic constitutive models in the published literature; (2) incorporation of three of the most appropriate constitutive models into the MARC nonlinear finite element program; (3) calibration of the three constitutive models against experimental data using Hastelloy-X material; and (4) application of the most appropriate constitutive model to a three dimensional finite element analysis of a cylindrical combustor liner louver test specimen to establish the capability of the viscoplastic model to predict component structural response.

A compressor designed for the energy research and development agency automotive gas turbine program

A centrifugal compressor was designed for a gas turbine powered automobile as part of the Energy Research and Development Agency program to demonstrate emissions characteristics that meet 1978 standards with fuel economy and acceleration which are competitive with conventionally powered vehicles. A backswept impeller was designed for the compressor in order to attain the efficiency goal range required for the objectives of this program. Details of the design and method of flow analysis of the compressor are presented.

Research and development optical deep space antenna sizing study

Results from this study provide a basis for the selection of an aperture size appropriate for a research and development ground-based receiver for deep space optical communications. Currently achievable or near-term realizable hardware performance capabilities for both a spacecraft optical terminal and a ground terminal were used as input parameters to the analysis. Links were analyzed using OPTI, our optical link analysis program. Near-term planned and current missions were surveyed and categorized by data rate and telecommunications-subsystems prime power consumption. The spacecraft optical-terminal transmitter power was selected by matching these (RF) data rates and prime power requirements and by applying power efficiencies suitable to an optical communications subsystem. The study was baselined on a Mars mission. Results are displayed as required ground aperture size for given spacecraft transmitter aperture size, parametrized by data rate, transmit optical power, and wavelength.

Facility requirements for helicopter noise research

Development of future helicopter noise prediction methods requires an accurate experimental data base for correlation studies or assessment of theoretical prediction methods. The aerodynamic and acoustic performance criteria for conducting experimental studies of helicopter noise using existing test facilities were defined. Requirements for ground-based facilities were described in addition to the limitations associated with full scale and model scale studies. Flight testing methods were also evaluated briefly and the restrictions associated with these approaches were cited. Finally, a general evaluation of ground-based and flight testing methods is given. Based on this presentation, future investigators can select the experimental approach best suited for generating a desired data base. Also, facility improvements need to extend the state of the art in helicopter noise experimental studies so that problems can be identified.

An Analysis of the Impact of the Federal Budgetary Cycle Upon the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Research and Development Budget Formulation Process

The subsequent dissertation represents an analysis of the impact of the Federal Budgetary Cycle upon the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC) Research and Development (R&D) budget formulation process. The author's objectives may therefore be seen as the following: (1) to analyze the Federal Budgetary Cycle; (2) to analyze MSC R&D estimates and growth trends in relation to their implications on the Federal Cycle; (3) to identify relevant problems; and, (4) to-recommend solutions which display promise and feasibility. Any research involving the Federal Budgetary Cycle can well be characterized as of almost infinite scope and enormous complexity. For such reasons one must meticulously delineate all operational parameters and there-afore maintain their integrity. To do otherwise is to invite intellectual dilution and hazard a paltry effort.
