Electromagnetic Transient Simulation of Photovoltaic Inverter Using Implicit-Explicit Solver

This paper introduces the implementation of electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations of a photovoltaic (PV) inverter module using the Implicit-Explicit (ImEx) solver in the Suite of Nonlinear and Differential/Algebraic Equation Solvers (SUNDIALS). This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the ImEx solver in overcoming the challenges inherent in simulating the complex dynamics of PV inverter modules. Furthermore, using SUNDIALS’ ImEx solver module ARKODE for EMT simulation automates key aspects of the process, such as numerical integration, providing substantial benefits including enhanced consistency, faster implementation, reduced human error, and the capability to handle the complexities of advanced numerical integration. By conducting comparative simulations with an implicit method used in commercial software, the research showcases the ImEx solver’s capability in achieving high accuracy and reliability. Results indicate that leveraging the ImEx approach significantly enhances modeling fidelity and reduces simulation setup times, offering a promising tool for the EMT analysis of PV inverter systems in power electronics-dominated power grids.

DERMS-RT (Distributed Energy Resource Management Solution using Real-Time Optimization) [SWR-20-46]

DERMS-RT provides a distributed energy resource management solution using real-time optimization to control different types of distributed energy resources (DERs) — such as rooftop PVs, battery energy storage systems, HVAC loads, electric water heater loads, and EV charging loads, and use these DERs to provide distribution voltage regulation and peak demand management services. The control approach implemented by DERM-RT is developed based on the real-time optimal power flow and distributed control previously developed by NREL researchers. The software codes are designed to provide modular DER management solution that can be easily applied to control heterogeneous DERs in distribution grids in coordination with centralized utility management systems. Also, DERMS-RT provides application programming interface (API) to extract useful grid model information from an open-source power system simulation software, use the information to solve the optimization problem, and apply the optimal set-points to the controlled DERs. In this way, DERMS-RT provides a plug-and-play function for implementing the real-time DER control on different utility system models, and it can be used as a simulation testbed to demonstrate the impact of real-time DER optimization on improving grid operations.

Building Performance Software: Portfolio-Level Capabilities and Applications

Navigating the broad and rapidly evolving market landscape of software solutions is complex whether you are a sustainability leader, building owner, energy manager, or building engineer with energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals for a portfolio of buildings. The Department of Energy’s Better Buildings partners have noted this complexity and the associated lack of publicly available information. In response, this report reviews the ecosystem of environmental, social, and governance (ESG), energy management information systems (EMIS), and decarbonization software with the goal of orienting prospective users to current offerings. Organizations can utilize this guidance to determine the specific capabilities needed to support decarbonization efforts and procure appropriate software to streamline the GHG emissions reduction process. In this paper, we refer to “decarbonization software” as the category of software that meets an organization’s needs for decarbonization planning, implementation, and tracking. This software may have a heritage in ESG or EMIS, or it may be an entirely new product. This report offers a snapshot of today’s rapidly evolving decarbonization software capabilities, along with guidance for procuring and utilizing it that will remain relevant despite any future software changes. Exploratory research was conducted on over 100 software providers, and interviews were held with 28 of them. Note that inclusion in this report does not indicate an endorsement, nor does a product’s absence from this report indicate a lack of suitability

Comparison of regression modeling techniques for resource estimation

The development and validation of resource utilization models is an active area of software engineering research. Regression analysis is the principal tool employed in these studies. However, little attention was given to determining which of the various regression methods available is the most appropriate. The objective of the study is to compare three alternative regession procedures by examining the results of their application to one commonly accepted equations for resource estimation. The data studied was summarized, the resource estimation equation was described, the regression procedures were explained, and the results obtained from the proceures were compared.

KBS V and V as related to automation of space station subsystems: Rationale for a KBS lifecycle

The role of verification and validation (V and V) in software has been to support and strengthen the software lifecycle and to ensure that the resultant code meets the standards of the requirements document. Knowledge based systems (KBS) V and V should serve the same role, but the KBS lifecycle is ill-defined. Here, the rationale of the simple form of the KBS lifecycle is explained. Special KBS development requirements are accommodated where possible by modifications to the traditional software lifecycle. Research areas are suggested for those aspects which present new or unusual difficulties for V and V.

Second order tensor finite element

The results of a research and software development effort are presented for the finite element modeling of the static and dynamic behavior of anisotropic materials, with emphasis on single crystal alloys. Various versions of two dimensional and three dimensional hybrid finite elements were implemented and compared with displacement-based elements. Both static and dynamic cases are considered. The hybrid elements developed in the project were incorporated into the SPAR finite element code. In an extension of the first phase of the project, optimization of experimental tests for anisotropic materials was addressed. In particular, the problem of calculating material properties from tensile tests and of calculating stresses from strain measurements were considered. For both cases, numerical procedures and software for the optimization of strain gauge and material axes orientation were developed.

Rule groupings: An approach towards verification of expert systems

Knowledge-based expert systems are playing an increasingly important role in NASA space and aircraft systems. However, many of NASA's software applications are life- or mission-critical and knowledge-based systems do not lend themselves to the traditional verification and validation techniques for highly reliable software. Rule-based systems lack the control abstractions found in procedural languages. Hence, it is difficult to verify or maintain such systems. Our goal is to automatically structure a rule-based system into a set of rule-groups having a well-defined interface to other rule-groups. Once a rule base is decomposed into such 'firewalled' units, studying the interactions between rules would become more tractable. Verification-aid tools can then be developed to test the behavior of each such rule-group. Furthermore, the interactions between rule-groups can be studied in a manner similar to integration testing. Such efforts will go a long way towards increasing our confidence in the expert-system software. Our research efforts address the feasibility of automating the identification of rule groups, in order to decompose the rule base into a number of meaningful units.

The Life Support Database system

The design and implementation of the database system are described with specific reference to data available from the Build-1 version and techniques for its utilization. The review of the initial documents for the Life Support Database is described in terms of title format and sequencing, and the users are defined as participants in NASA-sponsored life-support research. The software and hardware selections are based respectively on referential integrity and compatibility, and the implementation of the user interface is achieved by means of an applications-programming tool. The current Beta-Test implementation of the system includes several thousand acronyms and bibliographic references as well as chemical properties and exposure limits, equipment, construction materials, and mission data. In spite of modifications in the database the system is found to be effective and a potentially significant resource for the aerospace community.
