Rapid Event Detection via Synchro-Waveform Based Temporal Attention Network in Distributed Grid

Compared with the information collected from phasor measurement units, synchro-waveforms contain high-fidelity disturbances of the grid, which can be a granular and authentic representation of measurements in the modern power system. However, the dynamic changing morphology makes it challenging to effectively capture various disturbance information from the synchro-waveforms. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes a Synchro-waveform based Temporal Attention (STA) network to achieve rapid event detection. First, a multi-scenario distributed model with renewable integration is established to generate synchro-waveforms under various uncertainties. Then, three typical temporal features are extracted directly from the synchro-waveform measurements. Additionally, the lightweight STA network is deployed to identify the most common event types in renewable energy systems via the self-attention based vision transformer module. The results from simulated experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach can achieve rapid and real-time detection within 0.81 ms and over 96.27 % accuracy.

Penalized ensemble Kalman filters for high dimensional non-linear systems

The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is a data assimilation technique that uses an ensemble of models, updated with data, to track the time evolution of a usually non-linear system. It does so by using an empirical approximation to the well-known Kalman filter. However, its performance can suffer when the ensemble size is smaller than the state space, as is often necessary for computationally burdensome models. This scenario means that the empirical estimate of the state covariance is not full rank and possibly quite noisy. To solve this problem in this high dimensional regime, we propose a computationally fast and easy to implement algorithm called the penalized ensemble Kalman filter (PEnKF). Under certain conditions, it can be theoretically proven that the PEnKF will be accurate (the estimation error will converge to zero) despite having fewer ensemble members than state dimensions. Further, as contrasted to localization methods, the proposed approach learns the covariance structure associated with the dynamical system. These theoretical results are supported with simulations of several non-linear and high dimensional systems.

Development of Integrated Safety and Security Models for Comprehensive Reliability and Resiliency Evaluation

The security of the electric grid and supporting energy systems is crucial to national security. One of the complexities in analyzing the security of energy systems is the safety consequences that may result from accidents. For energy systems, the goal is to ensure that they operate as intended and that any consequences are mitigated or prevented. The integration of safety and security is paramount to protecting these systems from attacks and ensuring that large consequences are prevented. This report describes an integrated safety and security methodology to evaluate cybersecurity events that can lead to large consequences. This novel approach first describes how Systems-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) provides a digital causal analysis for Bayesian Networks (BNs). The use of STPA causal analysis provides a systematic approach to constructing BNs that adequately model cyber scenarios that result in consequences. When combined with the technical principles described in Risk-Informed Management of Enterprise Systems (RIMES), a comprehensive risk-informed cybersecurity analysis results that allows decision-makers to prioritize systems that most impact risk.

Nuclear Data: What, Why How, Who? [Slides]

Nuclear data is data that describes physics in forms and formats that computer code can read to perform simulations of nuclear processes. The data is put into ”evaluations” following the combination of experiment and theory. Various physics are applied to these evaluations by the NJOY nuclear data processing code to produce application files, which simulation codes (e.g., MCNP, Partisn, etc.) can use to model various scenarios. The Nuclear Data Team at Los Alamos National Laboratory—in partnership with a variety of national and international organizations—provides nuclear data for use at LANL and throughout the world. This data is verified and validated to ensure that it performs as expected and accurately represents Mother Nature.

Dark Matter Search in the Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab

Dark matter is one of the most interesting research topics in physics. Many particle physicists are trying to identify it because we know that dark matter could be a major component of a complete fundamental description of nature. The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab measures the anomalous precession frequency of the muon. Oscillations of this precession frequency could be produced by dark matter coupling to muons. This talk will describe how we could observe DM signals in the Muon g-2 data. I will explain how we determine the Muon g-2 DM mass range sensitivity, and analysis strategies throughout the mass range. Finally, I will present the expected Muon g-2 experiment discovery/exclusion reach in selected DM model-dependent scenarios.

Uncertainty Analyses of Molten Salt Property Measurements

Thermophysical and thermochemical property values of molten salts and associated uncertainties are used by reactor developers to evaluate reactor performance and model accident scenarios. These activities support fuel qualification objectives by demonstrating that fundamental safety functions (e.g., limit the release of radioactive materials, remove heat from the reactor, and control reactivity) can be performed effectively in a variety of conditions over the operating life of the reactor. Fuel qualification activities are still in the development phase due to a lack of reliable property data for salt mixtures being considered for use in molten salt reactors (MSR).

Levelized Cost of Dispensed Hydrogen for Heavy-Duty Vehicles

In this short technical report, we explore the range of levelized costs of dispensed hydrogen (H2) from hydrogen refueling (or fueling) stations (HRS) for H2 heavy-duty fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) that are feasible in the 2030 timeframe. We explore different scenarios by varying hydrogen delivery distances, HRS sizes, HRS utilization rates, and economies of scale in the Hydrogen Delivery Scenario Analysis Model (HDSAM). Thus, we observe how the contribution to the levelized cost of each supply chain component changes.

Makah Tribe Strategic Energy Plan

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project (ETIPP) connects remote and island communities, regional partners, and the DOE national laboratories to support communities as they seek to build resilience in their energy systems. The Makah Tribe faces several energy challenges, including frequent power outages and the potential for an extended outage due to an earthquake or tsunami. The Tribe joined ETIPP in 2022 to address those challenges, seeking to build energy resilience and sovereignty in the community. The Makah Tribe, Spark Northwest, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) collaborated to develop a strategic energy plan as part of the second cohort of ETIPP communities. The long-term energy vision of the Makah Tribe includes increasing energy efficiency in the community, improving energy management capacity, and developing the renewable energy generation and storage sufficient to independently power the Reservation for one year. Additionally, the ETIPP team worked with Makah leadership, staff, and community members to identify a set of community priorities, values, and goals to guide energy development as the Tribe takes the incremental steps toward their vision for energy sovereignty. Those energy values include ecosystem-based management, energy sovereignty and project ownership, workforce development and capacity, economic opportunity, community wellbeing and priorities, and emergency disaster resilience. To understand what would be needed for a year for energy independence, the PNNL team conducted an assessment to determine the current energy usage of the Tribe and also modeled several scenarios for future energy use. Using the energy usage values, the team estimated how two types of renewable energy technology, specifically locally deployed solar and small-scale wind, could contribute towards the energy independence goal. The energy baseline and resource assessment produced the following key findings:

Powering Negative-Emissions Technologies with Marine Renewable Energy

The majority of modeled emissions scenarios that meet the climate change goals outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement require not only significant reductions in anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions, but also removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere ("negative emissions"). To date, research and development efforts have largely focused on land-based negative emissions technologies, such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage. However, ocean-based technologies also have significant potential, and avoid competition for land use and fresh water with agriculture and human development. Marine carbon dioxide removal approaches include biological solutions that seek to increase carbon fixation through photosynthesis and chemical solutions that aim to increase the absorption of carbon dioxide in seawater. Most of these approaches have significant power requirements, especially when implemented at the scale necessary to meet negative-emissions goals. Marine renewable energy is uniquely poised to power marine carbon dioxide removal given its ability to provide carbon-free power at sea. In this work, the power requirements of marine carbon dioxide removal systems and the potential of marine renewable energy to power them are investigated, culminating in recommendations for future research and development to enable such developments.

Numerical investigation of the effect of ultrasound on paper drying

The paper drying process is very energy inefficient. More than two-thirds of the total energy used in a paper machine is for drying paper. Novel drying technologies, such as ultrasound (US) drying, can be assessed numerically for developing next-generation drying technologies for the paper industry. This work numerically illustrates the impact on drying process energy efficiency of US transducers installed on a two-tiered dryer section of a paper machine. Piezoelectric transducers generate ultrasound waves, and liquid water mist can be ejected from the porous media. The drying rate of handsheet paper in the presence of direct-contact USis measured experimentally, and the resultant correlation is included in the theoretical model. The drying section of a paper machine is simulated by a theoretical drying model. In the model, three scenarios are considered. In the first scenario, the US modules are positioned in the dryer pockets, while in the second scenario, they are placed upstream of the drying section right after the press section. The third case is the combination ofthe first and second scenarios. The average moisture content and temperature during drying, enhancement of total mass flux leaving the paper by the US mechanism, total energy consumption, and thermal effect of heated US transducers are analyzed for all cases. Results show that the application of the US can decrease the total number of dryer drums for drying paper. This numerical study is based on the US correlation obtained with the US transducer in direct contact with the paper sample. Thus, future work should include US correlation based on a non-contact US transducer.

Kilonovae and Long-duration Gamma-Ray Bursts

Recent detections of kilonova-like emission following long-duration gamma-ray bursts GRB 211211A and GRB 230307A have been interpreted as originating from the merger of two neutron stars. In this work, we demonstrate that these observations are also consistent with nucleosynthesis originating from a collapsar scenario. Our model is capable of reproducing the observed optical and infrared light curves using a single, weak r-process component. The absence of lanthanide-rich material in our model, consistent with the data, challenges the prevailing interpretation that a red evolution in such transients necessarily indicates the presence of heavy r-process elements.

California Time-of-Use (TOU) Transition: Effects on Distributed Wind and Solar Economic Potential

Time-of-use (TOU) retail energy rates price electricity differently by the time of day, communicating to consumers the costs of supplying electricity diurnally. This study evaluates the impact of Decision D.15.07-001, which mandates a transition in 2020 to default TOU rates for residential ratepayers in California, on the economic viability of behind-the-meter distributed wind and solar systems. Previous studies have demonstrated that increasing wind and solar generation will materially affect the diurnal cost of wholesale electricity. As retail and wholesale prices become more aligned, this could affect the inter-technology economic viability of distributed generation. We assess economic viability through 'economic potential,' or the amount of generation capacity that exceeds a rate of return of 5.4%. In addition, we identify sensitivities of economic potential to capital costs and other techno-economic factors as well as the specific counties and sectors with substantial economic potential. We find that TOU implementation is projected to moderately increase economic potential of distributed wind and marginally decrease that of distributed solar. Over the long-term as variable renewable energy penetration increases in California, particularly utility-scale solar, net peak load and thus peak prices will shift later in the evening. To the extent that retail rates continue to evolve with wholesale prices, we find the changes could positively affect the value of wind generation more than that of solar generation. Over the scenarios considered, model results indicate realistic pathways to reaching a robust distributed wind market in California though solar economic potential was found to be substantially larger than that of wind.
