Mariner Mars 1971 television picture catalog. Volume 2: Sequence design and picture coverage

A collection of data relating to the Mariner 9 TV picture is presented. The data are arranged to offer speedy identification of what took place during entire science cycles, on individual revolutions, and during individual science links or sequences. Summary tables present the nominal design for each of the major picture-taking cycles, along with the sequences actually taken on each revolution. These tables permit identification at a glance, all TV sequences and the corresponding individual pictures for the first 262 revolutions (primary mission). A list of TV pictures, categorized according to their latitude and longitude, is also provided. Orthographic and/or mercator plots for all pictures, along with pertinent numerical data for their center points are presented. Other tables and plots of interest are also included. This document is based upon data contained in the Supplementary Experiment Data Record (SEDR) files as of 21 August 1972.

Mariner 9 mapping science sequence design.

The primary mission of Mariner 9 was to map the Martian surface. This paper discusses in detail the design of the mapping science sequences which were executed by the spacecraft in sixty days and during which over eighty percent of the surface was photographed. The sequence design was influenced by many factors: experimenter scientific objectives, instrument capabilities, spacecraft capabilities, orbit characteristics, and data return rates, which are illustrated graphically. Typical orbits are depicted for each of the three different mapping phases lasting twenty days. Examples of typical orbital sequence plans prepared daily during mission operations are given.

Sequence characterization of 5S ribosomal RNA from eight gram positive procaryotes

Complete nucleotide sequences are presented for 5S rRNA from Bacillus subtilis, B. firmus, B. pasteurii, B. brevis, Lactobacillus brevis, and Streptococcus faecalis, and 5S rRNA oligonucleotide catalogs and partial sequence data are given for B. cereus and Sporosarcina ureae. These data demonstrate a striking consistency of 5S rRNA primary and secondary structure within a given bacterial grouping. An exception is B. brevis, in which the 5S rRNA sequence varies significantly from that of other bacilli in the tuned helix and the procaryotic loop. The localization of these variations suggests that B. brevis occupies an ecological niche that selects such changes. It is noted that this organism produces antibiotics which affect ribosome function.

Kinematics and spectra of planetary nebulae with O VI-sequence nuclei

Spectral features of NGC 5189 and NGC 6905 are tabulated. Fabry-Perot profiles around H alpha and O III lambda 5007 of NGC 5189, NGC 6905, NGC 246, and NGC 1535, are illustrated. The latter planetary nebula is a non-O VI-sequence, comparison object of high excitation. The kinematics of the four planetary nebulae are simply analyzed. Discussion of these data is motivated by the possibility of collisional excitation by high-speed ejecta from broad-lined O VI-sequence nuclei, and by the opportunity to make a comparison with conditions in the supernova remnant or ring nebula, G2.4 + 1.4, which contains an O VI-sequence nucleus of Population I.

Concatenated shift registers generating maximally spaced phase shifts of PN-sequences

A large class of linearly concatenated shift registers is shown to generate approximately maximally spaced phase shifts of pn-sequences, for use in pseudorandom number generation. A constructive method is presented for finding members of this class, for almost all degrees for which primitive trinomials exist. The sequences which result are not normally characterized by trinomial recursions, which is desirable since trinomial sequences can have some undesirable randomness properties.

The effect of load sequence on the statistical fatigue of composites

A theoretical model to predict the effect of loading sequence on the statistical distributions of the fatigue life and the residual strength under n-stress levels of cyclic loading is derived on the basis of a three-parameter model. In particular, the dual stress fatigue cumulative damage is studied, showing that the Miner's sum (the cumulative damage sum at fatigue failure) is a statistical variable. It is proved theoretically that the Miner's sum is always greater than or equal to unity for the high-low load sequence, while it is always smaller than or equal to unity for the low-high load sequence, with the deviation from unity increasing as the difference between the high and the low stress levels increases. An experimental test program using graphite/epoxy angle-ply laminates, carried out to generate statistically meaningful data for verifying the proposed model, is discussed.

Discovery of three X-ray luminous pre-main-sequence stars

Three X-ray sources found serendipitously in Einstein images of the Taurus-Auriga cloud complex were observed at the McGraw-Hill Observatory and are found to be associated with stars of approximately 12 mag with weak H-alpha emission. The stars lie on the edges of dark clouds and are spectroscopically similar to the least active emission-line pre-main-sequence stars. Although they lie well above the ZAMS in the H-R diagram, they do not exhibit ultraviolet excess, strong optical variability, or evidence for mass outflow/inflow characteristics of the more active T Tauri stars. Their only unusual property is high X-ray luminosity (approximately 10 to the 30th ergs/s). It is suggested that the X-ray emission from pre-main-sequence stars is not closely linked to the conditions giving rise to their unusual spectroscopic properties. The emission may instead represent an enhanced form of the coronal activity producing X-rays observed in late-type main-sequence stars.

An analysis of rotor blade twist variables associated with different Euler sequences and pretwist treatments

A nonlinear analysis which is necessary to adequately model elastic helicopter rotor blades experiencing moderately large deformations was examined. The analysis must be based on an appropriate description of the blade's deformation geometry including elastic bending and twist. Built-in pretwist angles complicate the deformation process ant its definition. Relationships between the twist variables associated with different rotation sequences and corresponding forms of the transformation matrix are lasted. Relationships between the twist variables associated with first, the pretwist combined with the deformation twist are included. Many of the corresponding forms of the transformation matrix for the two cases are listed. It is shown that twist variables connected with the combined twist treatment are related to those where the pretwist is applied initially. A method to determine the relationships and some results are outlined. A procedure to evaluate the transformation matrix that eliminates the Eulerlike sequence altogether is demonstrated. The resulting form of the transformation matrix is unaffected by rotation sequence or pretwist treatment.

The lower main sequence and the nature of secondary stars in ultracompact binaries

The possible nature of the secondary stars in ultracompact binary stellar systems (with orbital periods of less than about 1 hr) are systematically investigated. Using a simplified stellar evolution code, which assumes isentropic stellar models, nearly 3000 separate models for hydrogen-burning main-sequence stars with masses less than 0.3 solar mass are generated. The effects of the (homogeneous) chemical composition on the properties of such stars and in, particular, on the minimum main-sequence mass are explored in detail. It is found that this minimum mass is a sensitive function of the hydrogen content and can be as small as 0.035 solar mass. The properties of fully degenerate low-mass stars, as well as low-mass stars that are not in thermal equilibrium are also studied. In particular, it is shown that the thermal time scale of such nonequilibrium stars may exceed 10 billion yr. The results also confirm the existence of a second branch of the main sequence and shed new light on the thermal instability of this branch. The available observational information on the three known ultracompact binary systems (4U 1626-67, G61-29, 4U 1916-05) is summarized, and the results of the stellar model calculations are combined with the empirical results to place constraints on the properties of the secondary stars.

Periodic binary sequences with very good autocorrelation properties

Computer searches were performed using both an 8086 microprocessor and a Cyber 750 mainframe to find repeated binary phase coded waveforms with very good matched and mismatched autocorrelation properties. The best results for every period up to 64 are given. Sequences with optimal peak sidelobes were discovered for each of these periods. These sequences have extensive applications in radar and communications, particularly in situations when there are very unfavorable signal-to-noise ratios. The best sequence of period 64 when processed using a mismatched filter giving no sidelobes has a reduction in the main lobe of less than 0.23 dB.

Archean metamorphic sequence and surfaces, Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord, East Greenland

The characteristics of Archean metamorphic surfaces and fabrics of a mapped sequence of rocks older than about 3000 Ma provide information basic to an understanding of the structural evolution and metamorphic history in Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord, east Greenland. This information and the additional results of petrologic and geochemical studies have culminated in an extended chronology of Archean plutonic, metamorphic, and tectonic events. The basis for the chronology is considered, especially the nature of the metamorphic fabrics and surfaces in the Archean sequence. The surfaces, which are planar mineral parageneses, may prove to be mappable outside Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord, and if so, will be helpful in extending the events that they represent to other Archean sequences in east Greenland. The surfaces will become especially important reference planes if the absolute ages of their metamorphic assemblages can be determined in at least one location where strain was low subsequent to their recrystallization. Once an isochron is obtained, the dynamothermal age of the regionally identifiable metamorphic surface is determined everywhere it can be mapped.

Ribosomal RNA sequence suggest microsporidia are extremely ancient eukaryotes

A comparative sequence analysis of the 18S small subunit ribosomal RNA (rRNA) of the microsporidium Vairimorpha necatrix is presented. The results show that this rRNA sequence is more unlike those of other eukaryotes than any known eukaryote rRNA sequence. It is concluded that the lineage leading to microsporidia branched very early from that leading to other eukaryotes.

Lithium in lower-main-sequence stars of the Alpha Persei cluster

Lithium abundances are presented for main-sequence stars of spectral types F, G, and K in the young open cluster Alpha Per. For 46 cluster members, a correlation between Li abundance and projected rotational velocity v sin i is found: all of the Li-poor stars are slow rotators. Two explanations are proposed to account for the correlation: (1) that the Li depletion is introduced following a rapid spin-down phase experienced by young low-mass stars, and that this episode of Li depletion may be the dominant one determining the spread of Li abundances among young low-mass main-sequence stars, and (2) that star formation has occurred over a finite period such that the older stars have undergone a spin-down and depletion of Li by a means that may or may not depend on rotation. The Li abundance in the warm and rapidly rotating stars appears to be undepleted, as is predicted by recent models of pre-main-sequence stars. The depletion observed in the cool stars exceeds the level predicted by these models.

High compression image and image sequence coding

The digital representation of an image requires a very large number of bits. This number is even larger for an image sequence. The goal of image coding is to reduce this number, as much as possible, and reconstruct a faithful duplicate of the original picture or image sequence. Early efforts in image coding, solely guided by information theory, led to a plethora of methods. The compression ratio reached a plateau around 10:1 a couple of years ago. Recent progress in the study of the brain mechanism of vision and scene analysis has opened new vistas in picture coding. Directional sensitivity of the neurones in the visual pathway combined with the separate processing of contours and textures has led to a new class of coding methods capable of achieving compression ratios as high as 100:1 for images and around 300:1 for image sequences. Recent progress on some of the main avenues of object-based methods is presented. These second generation techniques make use of contour-texture modeling, new results in neurophysiology and psychophysics and scene analysis.

A test matrix sequencer for research test facility automation

The hardware and software configuration of a Test Matrix Sequencer, a general purpose test matrix profiler that was developed for research test facility automation at the NASA Lewis Research Center, is described. The system provides set points to controllers and contact closures to data systems during the course of a test. The Test Matrix Sequencer consists of a microprocessor controlled system which is operated from a personal computer. The software program, which is the main element of the overall system is interactive and menu driven with pop-up windows and help screens. Analog and digital input/output channels can be controlled from a personal computer using the software program. The Test Matrix Sequencer provides more efficient use of aeronautics test facilities by automating repetitive tasks that were once done manually.

Generation of animation sequences of three dimensional models

The invention is directed toward a method and apparatus for generating an animated sequence through the movement of three-dimensional graphical models. A plurality of pre-defined graphical models are stored and manipulated in response to interactive commands or by means of a pre-defined command file. The models may be combined as part of a hierarchical structure to represent physical systems without need to create a separate model which represents the combined system. System motion is simulated through the introduction of translation, rotation and scaling parameters upon a model within the system. The motion is then transmitted down through the system hierarchy of models in accordance with hierarchical definitions and joint movement limitations. The present invention also calls for a method of editing hierarchical structure in response to interactive commands or a command file such that a model may be included, deleted, copied or moved within multiple system model hierarchies. The present invention also calls for the definition of multiple viewpoints or cameras which may exist as part of a system hierarchy or as an independent camera. The simulated movement of the models and systems is graphically displayed on a monitor and a frame is recorded by means of a video controller. Multiple movement and hierarchy manipulations are then recorded as a sequence of frames which may be played back as an animation sequence on a video cassette recorder.
