A sequence solution to the Fokker-Planck equation.

In this paper a new approach to nonlinear system analysis based on the Fokker-Planck equation is developed. The development begins as a modification of the parametrix method of partial differential equation theory and provides a sequence solution to the multidimensional time-varying Fokker-Planck equation. This sequence is simplified for the case where only a steady-state solution or a solution for the variance of a particular combination of states is desired. Equations are presented in a form suitable for obtaining numerical results using a digital computer.

Alternate multiple-outer-planet missions using a Saturn-Jupiter flyby sequence

A study has been made of a method for providing more frequent launch opportunities for multiple-planet Grand Tour type missions to the outer solar system. A Saturn-Jupiter flyby sequence was used in the analysis to initiate the mission instead of the normal Jupiter-Saturn sequence. The Saturn-first approach is shown to yield several new launch opportunities following the 1980 cutoff date for Jupiter-first missions. Results are given for various two-planet, three-planet, and four-planet Jupiter-first and Saturn-first missions. A unique five-planet Saturn-first mission and a Saturn-Jupiter flyby which returns to earth are also discussed. Mission performance is evaluated for each flyby technique by comparing Saturn-first and Jupiter-first missions with respect to launch energy requirements, available launch windows, planetary encounter conditions, and total mission times.

On the auto and cross correlation of PN sequences

The autocorrelation and crosscorrelation properties of pseudorandom (PN) sequences are analyzed by using some important properties of PN sequences. These properties make this discussion understandable without the need of linear algebraic approach. The analysis is followed by some experimental results.

Transitions 2s/2/ 2p/k/ - 2s 2p/k+1/ of the F I, O I, and N I isoelectronic sequences

Transitions of the type 2s/2/ 2p/k/ - 2s 2p/k+1/ have been identified for the elements from titanium through nickel for ions of the fluorine, oxygen, and nitrogen isoelectronic sequences. Wavelengths, visual intensity estimates, and energies are given. The energy differences of levels of the ground configuration are compared with predictions based on semiempirical equations derived by Edlen. Some of the lines of these isoelectronic sequences should be strong lines in solar-flare spectra.

Main sequence models for massive zero-metal stars

Zero-age main-sequence models for stars of 20, 10, 5, and 2 solar masses with no heavy elements are constructed for three different possible primordial helium abundances: Y=0.00, Y=0.23, and Y=0.30. The latter two values of Y bracket the range of primordial helium abundances cited by Wagoner. With the exceptions of the two 20 solar mass models that contain helium, these models are found to be self-consistent in the sense that the formation of carbon through the triple-alpha process during premain sequence contraction is not sufficient to bring the CN cycle into competition with the proton-proton chain on the ZAMS. The zero-metal models of the present study have higher surface and central temperatures, higher central densities, smaller radii, and smaller convective cores than do the population I models with the same masses.

All-digital sequence correlator

Correlator can handle long-length pseudonoise sequences by adding shift registers, counters, and adders in "tree" configuration of basic 16-bit scheme. Correlation coefficient of unity or zero is generated when all bits of sequence are received and positioned correctly in input shift register.

Evaluation of options for process sequences

A methodology is being developed to ease the comparative evaluation of competing options in the process sequence for the manufacture of photovoltaic solar energy utilization systems. This evaluation will largely involve process economic analyses but will place equal emphasis on other characteristics, including energy consumption and environmental effects of the process options. Early analyses have been performed for the energy consumption in the arc furnace reduction of SiO2, for the costs and energy consumption in CZ crystal pulling and various slicing processes, and for the total energy consumption of process sequence through the completed module.

Shuttle program standard maneuver sequences for orbiter/upper-stage separation SSUS-A, SSUS-D, and IUS

Descriptions of standard post-ejection maneuver sequences for the deployment of IUS, SSUS-A, and SSUS-D upper stages from the space shuttle orbiter are presented. The sequences were designed to satisfy requirements for limiting the damage inflicted on the orbiter by upper-stage exhaust particles, subject to a further requirement for minimizing the impingement of orbiter thruster plumes on the deployed payload. In all cases it was assumed that the orbital maneuvering system engines would be used to apply the orbiter's major separation velocity increment.

A preliminary 'test case' manufacturing sequence for 50 cents/watt solar photovoltaic modules in 1986

The paper describes a 'test case' manufacturing process sequence for solar photovoltaic modules which will cost 50 cents/watt in 1986. The process, which starts with the purification of silicon grown into 75-mm-wide thin ribbons, is discussed, and the plant layout is depicted; each department is sized to produce 250 MW of modules/per year. The cost of this process sequence is compared to present technology at various companies showing considerable spread for each process; data are tabulated in a composite state-of-the-art cell processing cost summary for these processes.

Investigation of proposed process sequence for the array automated assembly task, phases 1 and 2

Progress was made on the process sequence for module fabrication. A shift from bonding with a conformal coating to laminating with ethylene vinyl acetate and a glass superstrate is recommended for further module fabrication. The processes that were retained for the selected process sequence, spin-on diffusion, print and fire aluminum p+ back, clean, print and fire silver front contact and apply tin pad to aluminum back, were evaluated for their cost contribution.

Evaluation and verification of epitaxial process sequence for silicon solar-cell production

Several process sequences are shown to be of potentially low cost and to perform effectively when applied to the high quality silicon crystals for which they were developed. The extent to which such process sequences can also perform effectively when applied to lower cost thin film solar cells formed by epitaxial deposition of Si on potentially inexpensive substrates of upgraded metallurgical grade Si was investigated.

Evaluation and verification of epitaxial process sequence for silicon solar cell production

The applicability of solar cell and module processing sequences, to be used on lower cost epitaxial silicon wafers was evaluated. The extent to which the process sequences perform effectively when applied to film solar cells formed by epitaxial deposition of Si on potentially inexpensive substrates of upgraded metallurgical grade Si is examined. It is concluded that these substrates are satisfactory in their cell performance.

Wavelength predictions for lines of interest in the Ne I sequence

It is noted that the resonance lines of ions in the neon isoelectric sequence are prominent at short wavelengths. Recent observations and calculations in the literature are used to derive estimated wavelengths of likely observable lines emitted by neonlike ions. Optimal conditions for observation are briefly discussed, and estimated wavelengths for three transitions of the neon isoelectric sequence are presented.

Observations of normal main-sequence and giant B stars

When interpreting the continuous and line spectra of B stars, it is helpful to think in terms of a model consisting of a photosphere and a mantle which is the outer part of the atmosphere where the effects of nonradiative heating are seen. A survey of the spectra of these stars shows that conditions in the photosphere determine most of what is seen, and in the case of most B stars, the presence of the mantle can be detected only by a special effort. The shape of the visible continuum spectrum and the shape and absolute value of the UV continuous spectrum as determined from low resolution spectra are discussed. Effective temperature for B stars in the main sequence, including corrections for interstellar extinction and bolometric corrections are explored. The major constituents of B-type spectra, variation of the strength of line along the main sequence band, the UV spectra, UV line blocking, intrinsic colors, and variations in light and spectra are also examined.

Acceleration of convergence of vector sequences

A general approach to the construction of accelerated convergence methods for vector sequences is proposed. A simplified version of minimal polynomial extrapolation is emphasized. The convergence of this method is analyzed and it is shown that it is especially suitable for accelerating the convergence of vector sequences that are obtained when one solves linear systems of equations iteratively.

Phylogenetic sequence of metabolic pathways in Precambrian cellular life

A sequence of major metabolic events is presented as they may have appeared during prokaryote evolution. This is based on (1) the phylogenetic schema derived from sequences of bacterial ferredoxin, 2Fe-2S ferredoxin, 5S ribosomal RNA, and c-type cytochromes; (2) metabolic settings in which these macromolecules are found; and (3) metabolic capabilities of the prokaryotes that carry these molecules.

An automated process sequence using preformed cell contacts and interconnects with a total cost of $0.64 per peak watt in 1986

A process sequence is described which utilizes a preformed metal mesh electrostatically bonded to each cell to provide the front contact. Cells of 12 percent AM1 efficiency have been produced using this scheme. This method also permits access to both contacts on the cell from the back side. In addition, low cost cell interconnection is accomplished using a flexible 'printed circuit' sheet which is ultrasonically bonded to the cell contacts. The complete process sequence as well as automated equipment which also uses ion implantation and pulse annealing is described. The total cost for module fabrication is estimated at $0.64 per peak watt for a 30 MW/year plant.
