Design Strategies of Spinel Oxide Frameworks Enabling Reversible Mg-Ion Intercalation

In this study, reversible Mg 2+ intercalation in metal oxides frameworks is a key enabler for an operational Mg ion battery with high energy density needed for the next generation of energy storage technologies. While functional Mg-ion batteries have been achieved in structures with soft anions (e.g., S 2- and Se 2- ), they do not meet energy density requirements to compete with the current rechargeable lithium-ion batteries due to their low insertion potentials, emphasizing the necessity of finding an oxide-based cathode that operates at high potentials. A leading hypothesis to explain the limited availability of oxide Mg-ion cathodes is the belief that Mg 2+ has sluggish diffusion kinetics in oxides due to strong electrostatic interactions between the Mg 2+ ions and oxide anions in the lattice. From this assessment, it can be hypothesized that such rate limiting kinetic shortcomings can be mitigated by tailoring an oxide framework through creating less stable Mg 2+ - O 2- coordination.

Lithium thiostannate spinels: air-stable cubic semiconductors.

Lithium chalcogenide materials have been studied less than other alkali metal analogs and are of interest as ion conductors and semiconductors capable of thermal neutron detection. Herein, we describe the structural, thermal, magnetic, electronic, and ionic properties of a new family of cubic lithium thiospinels Li2MSn3S8 (M = Mg, Fe, Mn, Ni, Co) and Li1.66CuSn3.33S8. All compounds crystallize in the Fd (3) over barm space group and exhibit site occupancy disorder with Sn and M on the octahedral site for M = Mg, Fe, Mn, Ni, Co. The Li1.66CuSn3.33S8 compound also exhibits occupancy disorder on the tetrahedral sites between Li and Cu, as well as on the octahedral sites between Li and Sn. We demonstrate the ability to tune the physical properties of the compounds by changing their composition. By tuning the identity of the transition metal in the structure, the optical band gaps can vary between 0.91(2) and 2.19(2) eV, and electrical resistivities between 2.8 x 10(3) Omega-cm and 2.2 x 10(7)Omega-cm can be achieved. Density functional theory calculations for Li2MgSn3S8 and Li1.66CuSn3.33S8 suggest that both materials have indirect band gaps and significantly dispersive conduction bands. A bandwidth dispersion of 0.75 and 0.70 eV along the Gamma -> M direction in the conduction band are predicted for Li2MgSn3S8 and Li1.66CuSn3.33S8, respectively, with an electron effective mass of 0.49 and 0.55 m(e) at the Gamma point. The hole effective mass in the valence band is calculated to be 1.25 me at the M point and 0.75 me at the L point for Li2MgSn3S8 and Li1.66CuSn3.33S8, respectively. The ionic/electronic conductivity of each compound was determined using AC electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Microwave Synthesis of Spinel MgFe 2 O 4 Nanoparticles and the Effect of Annealing on Photocatalysis

Through microwave heating in ethanol and with subsequent annealing, crystalline MgFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles are produced rapidly and in high yields >99%. Under varied annealing temperatures, the degree of Mg and Fe site inversion changes the optical, electronic, and composition of the nanoparticles. Here, a small particle size of ~10 nm is achievable with the aid of an ammonium salt mineralizer that caps the particles during nucleation and growth. Particles with the lowest inversion parameter and limited sintering upon annealing (at 600 ºC) exhibit the greatest production of hydroxyl radicals under visible light illumination. As such, these particles also facilitate the degradation of methylene blue dye faster than those particles annealed at higher temperature and show a rate constant of 0.061 h –1 for degrading 10 ppm methylene blue with 10 mg catalyst.

Resistive Switching of Spinel Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 Lithium-Ion Battery Material for Neuromorphic Computing

The rapid rise of AI has exposed significant limitations in conventional Von Neumann computing architecture, particularly in regard to speed and energy efficiency. To address these challenges, researchers are exploring a brain-inspired neuromorphic architecture that mimics biological neural networks, enabling massive parallel processing with reduced power consumption for complex AI computational demands. Recent interest has focused on utilizing battery electrodes and solid electrolyte materials for their resistive switching properties in developing a neuromorphic architecture. These properties are precisely tuned through local- and bulk-level chemical composition modifications via voltage bias stimuli. In this study, we demonstrate fabricating a three-terminal lithium-ion electrochemical transistor based on lithium titanium oxide (Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 ), a popular lithium-ion battery anode material. We deposited and characterized LTO thin films using RF sputtering, demonstrating a 6 orders of magnitude increase in electronic conductivity upon lithiation, with conductivity plateauing after 20% lithiation. Density functional theory calculations revealed transformation from the insulating to conducting state, supported by experimental characterization through X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Direct Current (DC) polarization analyses. The fabricated transistor consisted of LTO as the channel layer, gold as source/drain terminals, lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) as the lithium-ion conductor, and copper as the gate terminal. The device exhibited clear hysteresis in transfer characteristics due to lithium insertion/extraction processes. Long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) measurements showed an asymmetric ratio of 1.425 and maximum/minimum conductance ratio of 7.83. When implemented in a deep neural network (DNN) for MNIST handwritten digit recognition, the device achieved 92.03% accuracy over 20 training epochs. Detailed transport mechanism analysis revealed the crucial role of oxygen vacancies and interface effects in device operation. Our preliminary findings establish LTO-based lithium-ion electrochemical transistors as promising candidates for energy-efficient neuromorphic computing applications, offering potential solutions to traditional Von Neumann architecture limitations.

Room-Temperature Ferroelectric LiNb 6 Ba 5 Ti 4 O 30 Spinel Phase in a Nanocomposite Thin Film Form for Nonlinear Photonics

Tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) materials are one of the most promising classes of materials for ferroelectric and nonlinear optical devices, owing to their very unique noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. In this work, a new TTB phase of LiNb 6 Ba 5 Ti 4 O 30 (LNBTO) has been discovered and studied. A small amount of a secondary phase, LiTiO 2 (LTO), has been incorporated as nanopillars that are vertically embedded in the LNBTO matrix. The new multifunctional nanocomposite thin film presents exotic highly anisotropic microstructure and properties, e.g., strong ferroelectricity, high optical transparency, anisotropic dielectric function, and strong optical nonlinearity evidenced by the second harmonic generation results. An optical waveguide structure based on the stacks of α-Si on SiO 2 /LNBTO–LTO has been fabricated, exhibiting low optical dispersion with an optimized evanescent field staying in the LNBTO–LTO active layer. Lastly, this work highlights the combination of new TTB material designs and vertically aligned nanocomposite structures for further enhanced anisotropic and nonlinear properties.
