Spatial Convergence of Three Dimensional Turbulent Flows

Finite-volume and finite-element schemes, both implemented within the FUN3D flow solver, are evaluated for several test cases described on the Turbulence-Modeling Resource (TMR) web site. The cases include subsonic flow over a hemisphere cylinder, subsonic flow over a swept bump configuration, and supersonic flow in a square duct. The finite- volume and finite-element schemes are both used to obtain solutions for the first two cases, whereas only the finite-volume scheme is used for the supersonic duct. For the hemisphere cylinder, finite-element solutions obtained on tetrahedral meshes are compared with finite- volume solutions on mixed-element meshes. For the swept bump, finite-volume solutions have been obtained for both hexahedral and tetrahedral meshes and are compared with finite-element solutions obtained on tetrahedral meshes. For the hemisphere cylinder and the swept bump, solutions are obtained on a series of meshes with varying grid density and comparisons are made between drag coefficients, pressure distributions, velocity profiles, and profiles of the turbulence working variable. The square duct shows small variation due to element type or the spatial accuracy of turbulence model convection. It is demonstrated that the finite-element scheme on tetrahedral meshes yields similar accuracy as the finite- volume scheme on mixed-element and hexahedral grids, and demonstrates less sensitivity to the mesh topology (biased tetrahedral grids) than the finite-volume scheme.

Spectral Element Applications in Complex Nuclear Reactor Geometries: Tet-to-Hex Meshing

The spectral element code Nek5000 is an open-source, higher-order computational fluid dynamics code developed at Argonne National Laboratory. It is designed to solve incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, but it also has a low-Mach-number approximation feature available. Large eddy simulation is approached by explicit filtering of the velocity field (and other fields) to mimic the effect of dissipation due to the unresolved scale. The computational domain is decomposed into second-order hexahedral elements that conform to the boundaries. However, generating a high-quality pure-hexahedral mesh can be challenging for some problems. For simple geometries, traditional blocking methods can be used to decompose the domain into smaller blocks to generate a so-called structural mesh. A structural mesh can maintain good orthogonality but can have a highly skewed mesh to conform to the geometry, as well as unnecessary refinement in the far field. Moreover, for geometries with relative complexity, blocking the geometry becomes impossible. To address these issues, we adopted a let-to-hex strategy to generate a pure hexahedral mesh for Nek5000. First, we generate a pure tetrahedral mesh for the geometry; then we divide one tetrahedral element into four hexahedral elements. A pure tetrahedral mesh could be easily generated for complex geometries by using many current meshing codes. In this paper, we use the commercial codes ANSYS meshing and ANSYSICEM to generate the pure tetrahedral mesh and then convert it to a pure hexahedral mesh. Boundary layers are extruded in ANSYSICEM to maintain near-wall resolution.

Influence of soluble oligomeric aluminum on precipitation in the Al-KOH-H2O system

The role of oligomeric aluminate (Al(OH)4-) species in the precipitation of aluminum phases such as gibbsite (a-Al(OH)3) from aqueous hydroxide solutions remains unclear and difficult to probe directly, despite its importance to developing accurate predictions of Al solubility in highly alkaline systems. Precipitation in this system entails a transition from predominantly tetrahedrally coordinated Al species in solution to octahedrally coordinated Al in gibbsite. Here we report a quantitative study of dissolved Al in the Al-KOH-H2O system using a combination of molecular spectroscopies. We established a relationship between changes in 27Al NMR chemical shifts and the relative intensity of Raman vibrational bands, indicative of variations in the ensemble speciation of Al in solution, and the formation of unique contact ion pair interactions with the aluminate dimer, Al2O(OH)62 . A strong correlation between the extent of Al oligomerization and the amount of solvated Al was demonstrated by systematically varying the KOH:Al molar ratio. The concentration of dissolved oligomeric Al in solution also directly impacted the particle size and morphology of gibbsite; high concentrations of dimeric Al2O(OH)62-, yielded smaller and more numerous anhedral to subhedral gibbsite particles, while low concentrations yielded fewer and larger euhedral gibbsite platelets. The collective observations suggest a key role of the Al2O(OH)62- dimer in promoting gibbsite precipitation from solution, where the potassium ion-paired dimer possibly catalyzes a more rapid transformation of Al coordination from tetrahedral in solution to octahedral in gibbsite.

Determination of the vacancy distribution over Al cation sites in γ-Al 2 O 3

Although gamma-alumina (γ-Al 2 O 3 ) is an extensively used material with wide-ranging applications due to its inherently high surface area and acidity, its atomic structure is still not fully understood. γ-Al 2 O 3 is described as having a spinel-like structure, where the O sublattice has a face-centered cubic (FCC) arrangement and Al cations are placed in the spinel tetrahedral and octahedral interstitial sites. Achieving the correct stoichiometry of Al 2 O 3 , however, requires the introduction of Al vacancies into some of the interstitial sites. Despite the importance of accurately describing the structure of γ-Al 2 O 3 , the distribution of vacancies between tetrahedral and octahedral sites remains unclear, in part because of the usually poor crystalline quality of γ-Al 2 O 3 that has often been used in previous studies. To determine the actual cation distribution in γ-Al 2 O 3 , single-crystalline γ-Al 2 O 3 was investigated using a correlative approach of experimental and simulated selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) and high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Comparison of the reflection intensities in single-crystal SAED to simulated SAED from models with varied vacancy distributions revealed that vacancies exist primarily on tetrahedral sites, contrary to the placement of vacancies on octahedral sites proposed in several common models. Comparison of EELS spectra—acquired with the highest energy resolution reported so far for γ-Al 2 O 3 —with ab initio multiple scattering EELS simulations confirmed the distribution of vacancies on tetrahedral sites. These results enable more accurate modeling of γ-Al 2 O 3 to better predict its properties in existing and future applications.

Incorporation of Ti in epitaxial Fe2TiO4 thin films

The titanomagnetites (Fe2-xTixO4, x = 1) are a family of reducible spinel-structure oxides of interest for their favorable magnetic, catalytic, and electrical transport properties. To understand the stability of the system during low temperature deposition, epitaxial thin films of Fe2TiO4 were deposited by molecular beam epitaxy on MgO(001) at 250 – 375°C. The homogeneous incorporation of Ti, Fe valence, and film morphology were all found to be strongly dependent on the oxidation conditions at the low substrate temperatures employed. More oxidizing conditions led to phase separation into epitaxial, faceted Fe3O4 and rutile TiO2. Less oxidizing conditions resulted in polycrystalline films that exhibited Ti segregation to the film surface, as well as mixed Fe valence (Fe3+, Fe2+, Fe0). A narrow window of intermediate oxygen partial pressure during deposition yielded nearly homogeneous Ti incorporation and a large fraction of Fe2+. However, these films were poorly crystallized, and no occupation of tetrahedral sites in the spinel lattice by Fe2+ was detected by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Fe L-edge. After vacuum annealing, a small fraction of Fe2+ was found to occupy tetrahedral sites. Comparison of these results with previous work suggests that the restriction of the deposition conditions to low temperature by the MgO substrate limits the incorporation of Ti into the spinel lattice. This work suggests a path towards obtaining stoichiometric, well-crystallized Fe2TiO4 by MBE by utilizing high substrate temperature and low oxygen partial pressure during deposition on temperature-stable substrates.
