A single particle has a 6-element phase space vector $s = (x, γv)$ where $γv =\frac{p}{m}$ s proportional to the relativistic momentum. The ellipsoid is represented by a 21-element vector $(s, C, V)$ where $s$ is the phase space location of the centroid. $C$ is the 3 × 3 covariance matrix defined by $C_{ij} = ⟨δx_iδx_j⟩$, where $δx$ is the distance of a particle from the centroid $x$. $C$ is symmetric so only counts as 6 elements of the overall vector. $V$ is a general 3 × 3 matrix that determines the velocity distribution in the bunch by $δ(γv) = Vδx$. In total this makes 6 + 6 + 9 = 21 elements.
The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anode is often composed of nickel (Ni) and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). The yttria is added in small quantities (e.g., 8 mol %) to maintain the crystallographic structure throughout the operating temperatures (e.g., room-temperature to >800 °C). The YSZ skeleton provides a constraining structural support that inhibits degradation mechanisms such as Ni agglomeration and thermal expansion miss-match between the anode and electrolyte layers. Within this structure, the Ni is deposited in the oxide form and then reduced during start-up; however, exposure to oxygen (e.g., during gasket failure) readily re-oxidizes the Ni back to NiO, impeding electrochemical performance and introducing complex structural stresses. In this work, we correlate lab-based X-ray computed tomography using zone plate focusing optics, with X-ray synchrotron diffraction computed tomography to explore the crystal structure of a partially re-oxidized Ni/NiO-YSZ electrode. These state-of-the-art techniques expose several novel findings: non-isotropic YSZ lattice distributions; the presence of monoclinic zirconia around the oxidation boundary; and metallic strain complications in the presence of variable yttria content. This work provides evidence that the reduction–oxidation processes may destabilize the YSZ structure, producing monoclinic zirconia and microscopic YSZ strain, which has implications upon the electrode’s mechanical integrity and thus lifetime of the SOFC.
Genomic sequencing of clinical samples to identify emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 has been a key public health tool for curbing the spread of the virus. As a result, an unprecedented number of SARS-CoV-2 genomes were sequenced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed for rapid identification of genetic variants, enabling the timely design and testing of therapies and deployment of new vaccine formulations to combat the new variants. However, despite the technological advances of deep sequencing, the analysis of the raw sequence data generated globally is neither standardized nor consistent, leading to vastly disparate sequences that may impact identification of variants. Here, we show that for both Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms, downstream bioinformatic protocols used by industry, government, and academic groups resulted in different virus sequences from same sample. These bioinformatic workflows produced consensus genomes with differences in single nucleotide polymorphisms, inclusion and exclusion of insertions, and/or deletions, despite using the same raw sequence as input datasets. Here, we compared and characterized such discrepancies and propose a specific suite of parameters and protocols that should be adopted across the field. Consistent results from bioinformatic workflows are fundamental to SARS-CoV-2 and future pathogen surveillance efforts, including pandemic preparation, to allow for a data-driven and timely public health response.
Abstract We calibrate spectrophotometric optical spectra of 32 stars commonly used as standard stars, referenced to 14 stars already on the Hubble Space Telescope–based CALSPEC flux system. Observations of CALSPEC and non-CALSPEC stars were obtained with the SuperNova Integral Field Spectrograph over the wavelength range 3300–9400 Å as calibration for the Nearby Supernova Factory cosmology experiment. In total, this analysis used 4289 standard-star spectra taken on photometric nights. As a modern cosmology analysis, all presubmission methodological decisions were made with the flux scale and external comparison results blinded. The large number of spectra per star allows us to treat the wavelength-by-wavelength calibration for all nights simultaneously with a Bayesian hierarchical model, thereby enabling a consistent treatment of the Type Ia supernova cosmology analysis and the calibration on which it critically relies. We determine the typical per-observation repeatability (median 14 mmag for exposures ≳5 s), the Maunakea atmospheric transmission distribution (median dispersion of 7 mmag with uncertainty 1 mmag), and the scatter internal to our CALSPEC reference stars (median of 8 mmag). We also check our standards against literature filter photometry, finding generally good agreement over the full 12 mag range. Overall, the mean of our system is calibrated to the mean of CALSPEC at the level of ∼3 mmag. With our large number of observations, careful cross-checks, and 14 reference stars, our results are the best calibration yet achieved with an integral-field spectrograph, and among the best calibrated surveys.

A data processing apparatus, and method of operation thereof, for executing instructions. The apparatus includes one or more host processors, each having a first processing unit, and a multi-level memory system. One or more levels of the memory system are tightly coupled to a corresponding second processing unit. At least one of the host processors includes an instruction scheduler that routes instructions selectively to at least one of the first and second processing units, dependent upon the availability of the processing units and the location, within the memory system, of data to be used when executing the instructions.
A new, rapid and inexpensive synthesis method for monodispersed triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB) microparticles based on micelle-confined precipitation that enables control of microscopic morphology. The morphology of the TATB microparticles can be tuned between quasi-spherical and faceted by controlling the speed of recrystallization. The method enables improved performance and production consistency of TATB explosives for military grade explosives and propellants

A data processing apparatus includes one or more host processors with first processing units, one or more caches with second processing unit, a non-cache memory having a third processing unit and a reorder buffer operable to maintain data order during execution of a program of instructions. An instruction scheduler routes instructions to the processing units. Data coherence is maintained by control logic that blocks access to data locations in use by a selected processing unit other than the selected processing unit until data associated with the data locations are released from the reorder buffer. Data stored in the cache is written to the memory if it is already in a modified state, otherwise the state is set to the modified state. A memory controller may be used to restrict access to memory locations to be operated on.
A miss in a cache by a thread in a wavefront is detected. The wavefront includes a plurality of threads that are executing a memory access request concurrently on a corresponding plurality of processor cores. A priority is assigned to the thread based on whether the memory access request is addressed to a local memory or a remote memory. The memory access request for the thread is performed based on the priority. In some cases, the cache is selectively bypassed depending on whether the memory access request is addressed to the local or remote memory. A cache block is requested in response to the miss. The cache block is biased towards a least recently used position in response to requesting the cache block from the local memory and towards a most recently used position in response to requesting the cache block from the remote memory.

Exploding foil initiator apparatus, system, and method that improve the current density in the bridge region by modifying the shape and dimensions of the bridge and related components. The exploding foil initiator reduces burn-back by making areas of the bridge thicker except directly under the flyer. The exploding foil initiator boards are built so the flyer is not connected to the rest of the top cover-lay. This avoids losing energy due to the flyer having to tear away from the solid cover-lay.

High quality factor electromagnetic metasurfaces are provided. The metasurface is configured to have in plane guided-mode resonances (e.g., corresponding to waveguide modes or the like). Coupling features are included in the metasurface that are configured to couple free-space radiation to the guided mode resonances. The resulting structures have a high-Q response to free-space radiation and can be used for various applications, such as beam splitting, beam steering, and beam focusing or defocusing.
