Heterogeneous 3D Morphological Evolution of Ni Microparticles in Molten Salts: Visualized by Operando Synchrotron X-ray Nano-tomography

Ni-based superalloys are promising materials for high-temperature molten salt (MS) energy generation and storage. Studying morphological and chemical evolution of pure Ni in MS provides fundamental knowledge for MS technologies and corrosion mitigation. Here, in this study, real-time 3D morphological changes of Ni microparticles in molten KCl-MgCl 2 were studied by operando synchrotron X-ray nano-tomography at 700°C. Rapid Ni particle agglomeration occurred, without significant chemical reactions, such as oxide or chloride formation. The morphological growth evolved differently from classical coarsening or sintering behaviors and occurred nonuniformly, with other regions showing slight dissolution of Ni. Ni nanoparticles were found to be dispersed in many areas of the samples, either from microparticle dissolution or other radiation-induced nanoparticle formation mechanisms. This study discusses important factors, i.e., thermal gradient, amounts of salt and metals, and radiation effect, that influence morphological changes of materials in MS, critical for fundamental understanding of material–MS interactions as well as for practical applications.

WPGNN and PLayGen (Wind Plant Graph Neural Network and Plant Layout Generator) [SWR-21-90]

WPGNN is the graph neural network machine learning based surrogate model and software that provides a streamlined approximation of wind plant wake models. It can rapidly estimate the energy production of the plant and turbines for any arbitrarily sized wind plant and layout under any inflow condition. Associated tools include graphing and visualization capabilities as well as a wind plant generator capable of creating randomized realizations of canonical wind plant layouts. The WPGNN architecture and application is extendable to multiple wake models, turbine technologies and features, and supports downstream optimizations of wind plant layouts and control strategies. In addition to the WPGNN, we include the code for the plant layout generator (PLayGen) playgen.py. This generator can produce random realizations of realistic wind plant layouts from one of the four canonical styles: cluster, single string, multiple string, or parallel string. The PLayGen_demo.ipynb notebook provides a demonstration of how to use the generator tool.

CO2 Storage Site Analysis, Screening, and Resource Estimation for Cenozoic Offshore Reservoirs in the Central Gulf of Mexico

The storage potential of hydrocarbon reservoirs in the central Gulf of Mexico (GOM) makes future development of CO2 storage projects in those areas promising for secure, large-scale, and long-term storage purposes. Focusing on the producing and depleted hydrocarbon fields in the continental slope of the central GOM, this paper analyzed, assessed, and screened the producing sands and evaluated their CO2 storage potential. A live interactive CO2 storage site screening system was built in the SAS® Viya system with a broad range of screening criteria combined from published studies. This offers the users a real-time assessment of the storage sites and enables them to adjust the filters and visualize the results to determine the most suitable filter range. The CO2 storage resources of the sands were estimated using a volumetric equation and the correlation developed by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). The results of this study indicate that 1.05 gigatons of CO2 storage resources are available in the developed reservoirs at the upper slope area of the central GOM. The Mississippi Canyon and Green Canyon protraction areas contain the fields with the largest storage resources.

Assessment of Commercial Building Lighting as a Frequency Regulation Resource

This paper evaluates the potential for automated lighting control as a resource for frequency regulation of the electric grid system in the context of current energy policies, economic incentives, and technological trends. The growing prevalence of renewable energy has increased the need for ancillary services to maintain grid frequency and stability. While demand side resources like heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems, as well as water treatment plants are already evaluated as regulation service providers, the potential application to electrical lighting systems has largely been ignored. Yet, aggregations of lighting systems that are retrofitted with intelligent controls could conceivably contribute to frequency regulation services with little impact on user comfort. To further explore the feasibility of lighting potential, this paper explores (1) how lighting control systems are limited by visual comfort perception and acceptability, (2) how such limitations impact the performance of the lighting system as an frequency regulation resource, and (3) how the market potential of lighting systems as demand side resources compares in different regional transmission organizations. Finally, the impact of developing technologies on the application of lighting systems for frequency regulation is discussed.

EPIsembleVis: A geo-visual analysis and comparison of the prediction ensembles of multiple COVID-19 models

In this work, we present EPIsembleVis, a web-based comparative visual analysis tool for evaluating the consistency of multiple COVID-19 prediction models. Our approach analyzes a collection of COVID-19 predictions from different epidemiological models as an ensemble and utilizes two metrics to quantify model performance. These metrics include (a) prediction uncertainty (represented as the dispersion of predictions in each ensemble) and (b) prediction error (calculated by comparing individual model predictions with the recorded data). Through an interactive visual interface, our approach provides a data-driven workflow for (a) selecting and constructing the COVID-19 model prediction ensemble based on the spatiotemporal overlap of available predictions of multiple epidemiological models, (b) quantifying the model performance using both the uncertainty of each model prediction ensemble, and the error of each ensemble member that represents individual model predictions, and (c) visualizing the spatiotemporal variability in the projection performance of individual models using a suite of novel ensemble visualization techniques, such as the data availability map, a spatiotemporal textured-tile calendar, multivariate rose chart, and time-series leaflet glyph. We demonstrate the capability of our ensemble visual interface through a case study that investigates the performance of weekly COVID-19 predictions, which are provided through the COVID-19 Forecast Hub UMass-Amherst Influenza Forecasting Center of Excellence [47] for the United States and United States Territories. The EPIsembleVis tool is implemented using open-source web technologies and adaptive system design, rendering it interoperable with Elasticsearch and Kibana for automatically ingesting COVID-19 predictions from online repositories, and it is generalizable for analyzing worldwide projections from more epidemiological models.

Dual particle imaging: Applications in security and environmental imaging

Radiation imaging detectors have been applied in a variety of fields for detection, localization and characterization of radioactive sources. In this work, we describe a handheld detection system (H2DPI) that can simultaneously image neutrons and gamma rays, and reconstruct the energy spectra of the incident particles. This system was applied to the detection and characterization of a plutonium metal source in experiments performed at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center, where the 4.5 kg plutonium source was placed approximately 60 cm from the H2DPI. Neutron and gamma-ray images were measured that show good agreement with the known location of the source. Furthermore, the H2DPI was also used to measure the neutron spectrum, which shows the expected shape of a Watt fission spectrum, and the gamma-ray energy spectrum, which shows the energies common to plutonium metal. Finally, we describe the application of the H2DPI in augmented reality, whereby real-time neutron and gamma-ray imaging data can be streamed to the Microsoft HoloLens to allow the user to visualize the source locations.

Processes in DNA damage response from a whole-cell multi-omics perspective

Technological advances have made it feasible to collect multi-condition multi-omic time courses of cellular response to perturbation, but the complexity of these datasets impedes discovery due to challenges in data management, analysis, visualization, and interpretation. Here, we report a whole-cell mechanistic analysis of HL-60 cellular response to bendamustine. We integrate both enrichment and network analysis to show the progression of DNA damage and programmed cell death over time in molecular, pathway, and process-level detail using an interactive analysis framework for multi-omics data. Our framework, Mechanism of Action Generator Involving Network analysis (MAGINE), automates network construction and enrichment analysis across multiple samples and platforms, which can be integrated into our annotated gene-set network to combine the strengths of networks and ontology-driven analysis. Taken together, our work demonstrates how multi-omics integration can be used to explore signaling processes at various resolutions and demonstrates multi-pathway involvement beyond the canonical bendamustine mechanism.

VTK-m: Visualization for the Exascale Era and Beyond

A recent trend in modern high-performance computing is the increasing use of hybrid architectures, where the vast majority of performance comes from accelerators. Modern accelerators are based on Graphics Processing Units (GPU) that contain many low power cores that in their aggregate provides an extremely high computation rate. Current and future CPU processors are requiring more explicit parallelism as each successive version of the hardware packs in more cores, and technologies like hyperthreading and vector operations require even more parallel processing to leverage each core’s full potential. As an example, the Frontier supercomputer installed at Oak Ridge National Laboratories recently hit a record breaking 1.1 exaflops1 on the LINPACK HPC benchmark [Shoemaker 2022]. The system contains 37632 AMD MI250x GPUs which requires more than half a billion threads to keep the system fully utilized [Khizeran 2022].VTK-m is a toolkit of scientific visualization algorithms for these emerging processor architectures. VTK-m supports the fine-grained concurrency for data analysis and visualization algorithms required to drive extreme scale computing by providing abstract models for data and execution that can be applied to a variety of algorithms across many different processor architectures.

House Advantage or House of Cards? Stacking the Deck for Data Videos Leads to Null Results: Preprint

Videos are becoming a ubiquitous means of sharing information on social media platforms. In response, data videos - short clips combining visualization with dynamic storytelling, audio descriptions, and spatial referencing - have gained popularity for communicating data. These affordances suggest that data videos might communicate data patterns, trends, and concepts more effectively than static visualizations, enhancing comprehension. However, existing research has not systematically tested this claim. To address this gap, we conducted three controlled studies to measure comprehension differences between data videos and static visualizations. Despite leveraging visual cues and audio explanations, no data video led to significantly better comprehension than an analogous static visualization. Our results suggest data videos are not categorically better and that future research should examine the tradeoffs between their engagement benefits and costs.

An Alternative Timing and Synchronization Approach for Situational Awareness and Predictive Analytics

Accurate and synchronized timing information is required by power system operators for controlling the grid infrastructure (relays, Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), etc.) and determining asset positions. Satellite-based global positioning system (GPS) is the primary source of timing information. However, GPS disruptions today (both intentional and unintentional) can significantly compromise the reliability and security of our electric grids. A robust alternate source for accurate timing is critical to serve both as a deterrent against malicious attacks and as a redundant system in enhancing the resilience against extreme events that could disrupt the GPS network. To achieve this, we rely on the highly accurate, terrestrial atomic clock-based network for alternative timing and synchronization. In this paper, we discuss an experimental setup for an alternative timing approach. The data obtained from this experimental setup is continuously monitored and analyzed using various time deviation metrics. We also use these metrics to compute deviations of our clock with respect to the National Institute of Standards and Technologys (NIST) GPS data. The results obtained from these metric computations are elaborately discussed. Finally, we discuss the integration of the procedures involved, like real-time data ingestion, metric computation, and result visualization, in a novel microservices-based architecture for situational awareness.

Integrated System and Application Continuous Performance Monitoring and Analysis Capability (Final)

Scientific applications run on high-performance computing (HPC) systems are critical for many national security missions within Sandia and the NNSA complex. However, these applications often face performance degradation and even failures that are challenging to diagnose. To provide unprecedented insight into these issues, the HPC Development, HPC Systems, Computational Science, and Plasma Theory & Simulation departments at Sandia crafted and completed their FY21 ASC Level 2 milestone entitled "Integrated System and Application Continuous Performance Monitoring and Analysis Capability." The milestone created a novel integrated HPC system and application monitoring and analysis capability by extending Sandia’s Kokkos application portability framework, Lightweight Distributed Metric Service (LDMS) monitoring tool, and scalable storage, analysis, and visualization pipeline. The extensions to Kokkos and LDMS enable collection and storage of application data during run time, as it is generated, with negligible overhead. This data is combined with HPC system data within the extended analysis pipeline to present relevant visualizations of derived system and application metrics that can be viewed at run time or post run. This new capability was evaluated using several week-long, 290-node runs of Sandia’s ElectroMagnetic Plasma In Realistic Environments (EMPIRE) modeling and design tool and resulted in 1TB of application data and 50TB of system data. EMPIRE developers remarked this capability was incredibly helpful for quickly assessing application health and performance alongside system state. In short, this milestone work built the foundation for expansive HPC system and application data collection, storage, analysis, visualization, and feedback framework that will increase total scientific output of Sandia’s HPC users.
