Improved laser-plasma accelerator stability via high-bandwidth longitudinal focal position stabilization of a 100 TW-class laser system

Laser-plasma accelerators (LPAs) offer an attractive alternative to conventional accelerators for the development of compact electron sources and next-generation light sources. Due to orders-of-magnitude larger accelerating gradients, LPAs enable the acceleration of high-brightness electron beams to ultrarelativistic energies in millimeter- to centimeter-scale distances. However, LPA stability is limited by shot-to-shot fluctuations of the driving laser system. Specifically, fluctuations in the final-focus longitudinal position result in correlated instability in LPA electron beam qualities, including total beam charge, average beam energy, and energy spread. We demonstrate active stabilization of the longitudinal focal position for a 100 TW-class laser system. This repetition-rate scalable stabilization system leverages noninvasive wave front monitoring of a copropagating, unamplified kHz pulse train to guide corrective adjustments to the focal position of a 1 Hz amplified drive laser via an upstream telescope on millisecond timescales. In this demonstration, the approach limits standard deviation fluctuations of the amplified drive beam’s longitudinal focal position to ±0.22⁢ mm (representing at least a 53% reduction), achieved with a correction bandwidth that reaches the Nyquist frequency limit. Consequently, we observe marked improvements in both long-term and shot-to-shot LPA stability in terms of charge and spectrum.

𝑙-forbidden 𝑀⁢1 strengths near 100 Sn from knockout reactions in Cd and Sn

Neutron knockout reactions on beams of 104,102 Cd and 104 Sn are presented. States in the residual 103,101 Cd and 103 Sn nuclei are populated, including low-lying 7/2 + states of 𝜈⁢𝑔 7/2 character. These states have half-lives ≈ 400 ps due to their low energy and hindered 𝐵⁡(𝑀⁢1;7/2 + →5/2 + ) strengths. The excited-state half-lives were measured using their Doppler-shifted line shapes, and the resulting 𝐵⁡(𝑀⁢1) strengths are compared to valence space in medium similarity renormalization group (VS-IMSRG) calculations. Lastly, the VS-IMSRG calculations underpredict the 𝑙-forbidden 𝑀⁢1 strengths in the 100 Sn region, as well as in other regions of the nuclear chart near 40 Ca and 208 Pb.

Dynamic compression of [100] MgF 2 single crystals: Shock-induced polymorphism to highly coordinated structures

AX 2 -type compounds exhibit a rich and complex series of phase transitions under compression. The high-pressure polymorphism of rutile-type AX 2 difluorides can be characterized by a typical sequence from rutile type → Ca Cl 2 type → HP – Pd F 2 type → cotunnite type . Relative to dioxides, the reduced valence and ionic radius of the F – anion in rutile-type MgF 2 (sellaite) results in lowered transition pressures, making it a useful analog for SiO 2 and other dioxides. In this work, MgF 2 single crystals were shock-compressed along the [100] direction to 24 to 120 GPa using plate impact techniques, and wave profiles were measured using laser interferometry. At low stresses (24 to 44 GPa), we observe features consistent with an elastic–inelastic response, followed by a phase transformation. Peak stress-density states in this stress range are consistent with those expected for the modified fluorite-type (HP- PdF 2 ) phase or a related structure. At higher stresses (69 to 91 GPa), we observe a two-wave structure with peak stress-density states consistent with transformation to a denser and likely more highly coordinated phase such as the cotunnite-type structure. Furthermore, at 120 GPa, only a single wave structure is observed, indicating that the wave profile features observed at lower stresses are overdriven.

Superconductivity in the Li-B-C system at 100 GPa

Layer Li-B-C compounds have been shown to have feasible superconductivity. Using the adaptive genetic algorithm, we predict the structures of the Li-B-C system at 100 GPa. Here we identify several low-enthalpy metallic phases with stoichiometries of Li B 2 C, Li B 3 C, Li 2 BC 2 , Li 3 B 2 C 3 , Li 3 BC, and Li 5 BC. Using a fast screening method of electron-phonon interaction, we find that Li B 3 C is a promising candidate for superconductivity. The consecutive calculations using the full Brillouin zone confirm the existence of the strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in this system. The anharmonic B-C phonon modes near the zone center provide the major contribution to the EPC. The EPC constant is 1.40, and the estimated critical temperature is 22 K. In this paper, we indicate that superconductivity can also happen without a layered structural motif in the Li-B-C system. We also demonstrate an effective strategy for crystal structure prediction of superconducting materials.

Enhancement of α -particle formation near Sn 100

The superfluid tunneling model is applied to the calculation of ground-state-to-ground-state α decay in the even-even neutron-deficient Te-Ba nuclei. Here, we show that there is a larger α-particle formation probability in nuclei of this region above 100 Sn when compared to analogous nuclei above 208 Pb. This is consistent with the expected systematic variation of the pair gap Δ as a function of mass number. Finally, the recent experimental data on the α decay of the N=Z nuclei 104 Te and 108 Xe are shown to leave open the possibility of enhanced α-particle formation involving nucleon correlations beyond the standard treatment of like-nucleon pairing, which is the mechanism suggested as underlying "superallowed" α decay.

Design and characterization of a phonon-mediated cryogenic particle detector with an eV-scale threshold and 100 keV-scale dynamic range

We present the design and characterization of a cryogenic phonon-sensitive Si detector exploiting the Neganov-Tromov-Luke effect to detect single-charge excitations. This device achieved 2.65(2) eV phonon energy resolution when operated without a voltage bias across the crystal and a corresponding charge resolution of 0.03 electron-hole pairs at 100 V bias. With a continuous-readout data acquisition system and an oine optimum-filter trigger, we obtain a 9.2 eV threshold with a trigger rate of the order of 20 Hz. The detector's energy scale is calibrated up to 120 keV using an energy estimator based on the pulse area. The high performance of this device allows its application to different fields where excellent energy resolution, low threshold, and large dynamic range are required, including dark matter searches, precision measurements of coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering, and ionization yield measurements.

Constraints on Lorentz Invariance Violation from HAWC Observations of Gamma Rays above 100 TeV

Because of the high energies and long distances to the sources, astrophysical observations provide a unique opportunity to test possible signatures of Lorentz invariance violation (LIV). Superluminal LIV enables the decay of photons at high energy. The high altitude water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is among the most sensitive gamma-ray instruments currently operating above 10 TeV. HAWC finds evidence of 100 TeV photon emission from at least four astrophysical sources. These observations exclude, for the strongest of the limits set, the LIV energy scale to 2.2 × 10 31 eV , over 1800 times the Planck energy and an improvement of 1 to 2 orders of magnitude over previous limits.

Ultracold Electrons via Near-Threshold Photoemission from Single-Crystal Cu(100)

Achieving a low mean transverse energy or temperature of electrons emitted from the photocathode-based electron sources is critical to the development of next-generation and compact x-ray free electron lasers and ultrafast electron diffraction, spectroscopy, and microscopy experiments. In this Letter, we demonstrate a record low mean transverse energy of 5 meV from the cryo-cooled (100) surface of copper using near-threshold photoemission. Further, we also show that the electron energy spread obtained from such a surface is less than 11.5 meV, making it the smallest energy spread electron source known to date: more than an order of magnitude smaller than any existing photoemission, field emission, or thermionic emission based electron source. Overall, our measurements also shed light on the physics of electron emission and show how the energy spread at few meV scale energies is limited by both the temperature and the vacuum density of states.

Multimode Storage of Quantum Microwave Fields in Electron Spins over 100 ms

In this work, we report long coherence times (up to 300 ms) for near-surface bismuth donor electron spins in silicon coupled to a superconducting microresonator, biased at a clock transition. This enables us to demonstrate the partial absorption of a train of weak microwave fields in the spin ensemble, their storage for 100 ms, and their retrieval, using a Hahn-echo-like protocol. Phase coherence and quantum statistics are preserved in the storage.

Dynamical Nonlinear Inversion of the Surface Photovoltage at Si(100)

A surface photovoltage (SPV) is observed whenever a doped semiconductor with non-negligible band bending is illuminated by light and charge carriers are excited across the band gap. The sign of the SPV depends on the nature of the doping, the amplitude of the SPV increases with the fluence of the light illumination up to a saturation value, which is determined by the doping concentration. We have investigated Si(100) samples with well-characterized doping levels over a wide range of illumination fluences. Surprisingly, the sign of the SPV upon illumination with 532 nm photons reverses for some p-doping concentrations at high fluences. This is a new effect associated with a crossover between electronic excitations in the bulk and at the surface of the semiconductor.

Multimessenger measurements of the static structure of shock-compressed liquid silicon at 100 GPa

The ionic structure of high-pressure, high-temperature fluids is a challenging theoretical problem with applications to planetary interiors and fusion capsules. Here we report a multimessenger platform using velocimetry and angularly and spectrally resolved x-ray scattering to measure the thermodynamic conditions and ion structure factor of materials at extreme pressures. We document the pressure, density, and temperature of shocked silicon near 100 GPa with uncertainties of 6%, 2%, and 20%, respectively. The measurements are sufficient to distinguish between and rule out some ion screening models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Design and Demonstration of an 850 V dc to 13.8 kV ac 100 kW Three-phase Four-wire Power Conditioning System Converter Using 10 kV SiC MOSFETs

In this paper, an 850 V dc to 13.8 kV ac 100 kW modular multilevel three-phase four-wire dc/ac converter based on 10 kV SiC MOSFETs is designed and demonstrated. The design considerations of key components, including the dc-link, device cooling, gate driver, isolated gate driver power supply (GDPS), medium voltage (MV) ac filter inductor, MV and medium frequency transformer, and the mechanical design are discussed. Two converters are designed, and two prototypes are developed, to study the converter paralleling operation and scalability. Both converters are fully tested up to their voltage and power ratings. However, the two converters are not identical. Based on the design and test results of the first converter, the MV power stage, transformer design, GDPS, as well as the low voltage power stage in the second converter are improved for smaller size and/or higher efficiency. Compared to the version 1 converter, the version 2 converter achieves 49% volume reduction and 2 percentage point efficiency improvement, with a peak efficiency of 98.4% at the rated power.

Thermal Analysis of a 100 kW Polyphase Wireless Power Transfer System

Charging Electric Vehicles (EVs) fast and safely has a crucial role in the future of the EV technology. High-power Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) helps to significantly decrease the charging time. However, when the power transfer levels increase, thermal management becomes a significant challenge. The thermal design of the WPT systems needs more consideration in the design and implementation steps. This paper presents a thermal analysis of a 100 kW high-power WPT system. The thermal performance of the proposed design was evaluated at different power levels by considering the magnetic design and loss analysis. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the proposed design was performed and the thermal images of the implemented system were taken to prove the simulation results. The results show that, a liquid cooling design is needed for a high-power WPT systems for the long-time continuous operations of the charging pads.

Circuit Modeling, Simulation, and Experimental Validation of a 100-kW Polyphase Wireless Power Transfer System for EV Applications

Polyphase wireless power transfer (WPT) systems can achieve much higher surface power densities (kW/m2) and specific power levels (kW/kg) compared to the conventional circular single phase WPT systems. Therefore, polyphase WPT systems can reduce the size, weight, volume, and cost of the WPT systems and can simplify the electric vehicle integration with less demand for space. This study presents the high-performance and compact 100-kW WPT development using polyphase electromagnetic coupling coils with rotating magnetic fields.

Transient Stability Study of a Real-World Microgrid with 100% Renewables

This paper performs a transient stability study of a real-world microgrid that can operate with 100% renewables to better understand the stability and reliability of the microgrid under various dynamic scenarios. In particular, the operation of multiple grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) inverters in such a power system is not well understood under dynamic operation conditions, such as islanding and black start; therefore, in this paper, an electromagnetic transient model of the microgrid is developed to investigate the stability of the system under various dynamic operating conditions and to identify potential reliability risks. The PSCAD/EMTDC simulation with the high-fidelity model provides helpful insights into the optimal operation modes of GFM and GFL inverters as well as the stability and reliability of the microgrid. It can also inform field deployment in terms of inverter control parameters and coordination as well as the expected performance of black start and unplanned islanding.

A 100-kW Wireless Power Transfer System Development Using Polyphase Electromagnetic Couplers

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is an essential technology enabling automated charging of electric vehicles with safety, convenience, and flexibility while having high efficiencies. High-power wireless charging systems will be one of the dominating charging technologies for electric vehicles (EVs) in an effort to eliminate range anxiety and reduce charging times similar to that of gas station refueling practice. Polyphase electromagnetic coupler with rotating fields is a new bipolar wireless charging pad technology that can significantly increase the surface power density (kW/m2) of wireless charging coils. This study proposes a 100-kW wireless power transfer system with a compact vehicle-side (receiver) coupler that reaches to about 0.905 MW/m2 surface power density with a transmitter rated for up to 300 kW with 0.68 MW/m2. High-frequency power electronics including the inverter and rectifier designs are included in this digest along with the hardware prototype developments and preliminary experimental results.

Dual-Wavelength Y-Branch DBR Lasers With 100 mW of CW Power Near 2 μm

In this study, the interband GaSb-based diode lasers emitting simultaneously in two narrow bands separated by either ~1.6 or ~3.3 THz were designed, fabricated and characterized. The device active region contained one asymmetric tunnel-coupled double quantum well with separation between two lowest electron subbands controlled by thickness of the tunnel barrier. The Y-branch 6th order distributed Bragg reflector devices have been fabricated with either deep or shallow etched ridge waveguides. The increase of the deeply etched ridge waveguide width from 10 to 20 μm improved laser threshold and efficiency thanks to reduction of the relative role of the sidewall defect recombination. Further improvement of the device performance parameter was achieved by shallow etching. The shallow etched lasers with stable dual-wavelength emission spectrum generated 100 mW of continuous wave output power at 20 °C
