NASA Engineering and Safety Center Technical Bulletin No. 21-01: Experimental and Computational Study of Cavitation in Hydrogen Peroxide

Cavitation in liquid propulsion systems can lead to performance degradation and hardware failures. The NESC sponsored an investigation to measure and model cavitation in pressurized hydrogen peroxide fl ow. The experimentally measured and computationally predicted cavitation lengths were compared as a function of cavitation number. The measured and predicted data exhibited close agreement over the range of pressures and temperatures studied, and no calibration of the cavitation model coefficients was needed.

Intramolecular Electric Field Construction in Metal Phthalocyanine as Dopant‐Free Hole Transporting Material for Stable Perovskite Solar Cells with >21 % Efficiency

Abstract Low conductivity and hole mobility in the pristine metal phthalocyanines greatly limit their application in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as the hole‐transporting materials (HTMs). Here, we prepare a Ni phthalocyanine (NiPc) decorated by four methoxyethoxy units as HTMs. In NiPc, the two oxygen atoms in peripheral substituent have a modified effect on the dipole direction, while the central Ni atom contributes more electron to phthalocyanine ring, thus efficiently increasing the intramolecular dipole. Calculation analyses reveal the extracted holes within NiPc are mainly concentrated on the phthalocyanine core induced by the intramolecular electric field, and further to be transferred by π‐π stacking space channel between NiPc molecules. Finally, the best efficiency of PSCs with NiPc as dopant‐free HTMs realizes a record value of 21.23 % (certified 21.03 %). The PSCs also exhibit the good moisture, heating and light stabilities. This work provides a novel way to improve the performance of PSCs with free‐doped metal phthalocyanines as HTMs.

Enhancing Charge Transport of 2D Perovskite Passivation Agent for Wide-Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells Beyond 21%

The replacement of a small amount of organic cations with bulkier organic spacer cations in the perovskite precursor solution to form a 2D perovskite passivation agent (2D-PPA) in 3D perovskite thin films has recently become a promising strategy for developing perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with long-term stability and high efficiency. However, the long, bulky organic cations often form a barrier, hindering charge transport. In this study, for the first time, 2D-PPA engineering based on wide-bandgap (~1.68?eV) perovskites are reported. Pentafluorophenethylammonium (F5PEA+) is introduced to partially replace phenylethylammonium (PEA+) as the 2D-PPA, forming a strong noncovalent interaction between the two bulky cations. The charge transport across and within the planes of pure 2D perovskites, based on mixed ammoniums, increases by a factor of five and three compared with that of mono-cation 2D perovskites, respectively. The perovskite films based on mixed-ammonium (F5PEA+-PEA+) 2D-PPA exhibit similar surface morphology and crystal structure, but longer carrier lifetime, lower exciton binding energy, less trap density and higher conductivity, in comparison with those using mono-cation (PEA+) 2D-PPA. The performance of PSCs based on mixed-cation 2D-PPA is enhanced from 19.58% to 21.10% along with improved stability, which is the highest performance for reported wide-bandgap PSCs.

Chapter 21: Sustainable Technologies for Seaweed Conversion to Biofuels and Bioproducts

Seaweeds are attractive candidates to supply the future sustainable, photosynthetic, bioenergy feedstocks thanks to their cultivation promise in offshore marine farms, with year-round production, and no external nutrient requirements. Despite this potential, there are significant challenges associated with realizing both the cultivation and harvesting logistics, as well as in developing an efficient conversion platform to fuels and products. Effective and scalable and economically viable conversion processes tailored to a seaweed are discussed in detail and gaps on identified needs for yield and efficiency improvements. Among the conversion processes discussed here, anaerobic fermentation of seaweeds to bioenergy products, including organic acids and biomass, is promising to disrupt the current bioenergy landscape.
