Synthesis and structure of high-purity BaCe 0.25 Mn 0.75 O 3 : an improved material for thermochemical water splitting

Solar thermochemical hydrogen production (STCH) via redox-active metal oxides is an approach for direct solar-driven hydrogen generation typically using a high-temperature redox cycle involving refractory oxides and steam. Typical cycles involve high-temperature reduction of oxides to form oxygen vacancies, followed by lower temperature reaction between oxygen vacancies and steam where the oxide is re-oxidized and the steam is reduced to hydrogen. Only a few materials have demonstrated reversible cycling under the typically harsh STCH conditions (e.g. 1500°C reduction, 900°C re-oxidation) and critical questions remain on the true reversibility of non-stoichiometric multi-cation oxide systems, significantly hampered by the lack of single-phase samples for these material systems. To date, most STCH processes have relied on CeO 2 as a benchmark active material, but more recently, the 12R phase of BaCe 0.25 Mn 0.75 O 3 (BCM) has demonstrated greater hydrogen-generation potential at lower peak temperatures. However, previous reports of 12R-BCM have included large fractions, > 10 wt%, of secondary phases, which complicate analysis of the stability and performance. A comprehensive understanding of the redox mechanism and reversibility of the process in BCM can only be achieved with nearly single-phase samples which, to date, have been difficult to produce. Here two approaches to BCM synthesis are reported: solid state and sol–gel-based routes. It is demonstrated that both routes can be tuned to produce the 12R structure with > 97 wt% yield when annealed ≥1450°C. Herein synchrotron-based diffraction measurements of rhombohedral 12R-BCM enabled characterization of the anisotropy between thermal expansion along the c-axis and within the ab plane. The impact of high-temperature redox cycling on the stability and phase fraction of the 12R-BCM polytype was also investigated. Our results offer two viable routes for synthesis of high-purity 12R-BCM critically needed for evaluating the efficacy of BCM as a STCH material and validate its ability to split water at lower temperatures over extended numbers of redox cycles.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and electronic structure of the novel Zintl phase Ba 2 ZnP 2

The novel Zintl phase dibarium zinc diphosphide (Ba 2 ZnP 2 ) was synthesized for the first time. This was accomplished using the Pb flux technique, which allowed for the growth of crystals of adequate size for structural determination via single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The Ba 2 ZnP 2 compound was determined to crystallize in a body-centered orthorhombic space group, Ibam (No. 72). Formally, this crystallographic arrangement belongs to the K 2 SiP 2 structure type. Therefore, the structure can be best described as infinite [ZnP 2 ] 4– polyanionic chains with divalent Ba 2+ cations located between the chains. All valence electrons are partitioned, which conforms to the Zintl–Klemm concept and suggests that Ba 2 ZnP 2 is a valence-precise composition. In conclusion, the electronic band structure of this new compound, computed with the aid of the TB–LMTO–ASA code, shows that Ba 2 ZnP 2 is an intrinsic semiconductor with a band gap of ca 0.6 eV.

Multi-Line Superconducting Waveguides Based on YBCO-on-Kapton Technology

Coplanar (with the ground) and stripline 25 cm long waveguides are manufactured from the YBCO-Kapton material. The waveguides are intended as the key components of a scalable signal delivery for large quantum computing systems and detectors. The waveguide is coupled with an integrated power divider that replaces the standard attenuator. The divider is designed to return most of the power to the previous thermalization stage. The method is projected to reduce the active dissipation by ≈10. We investigate the effect of internal strain in YBCO layer on the device's mechanical stability. Here, we show that adhesives with high stiffness are essential for the reliability of YBCO-Kapton devices.

Meter-scale High-temperature Superconducting RF Waveguides with Integrated Filters and Attenuators

Here, we report the performance of coplanar, multifilament waveguides manufactured from crystalline films of a well-known HTS compound, YBCO, transferred to a low-loss dielectric substrate, such as E-Kapton. The coplanar two-line waveguide delivers low cross-talk, below 20 dB level, and low attenuation, below 4 dB/m at 6 GHz, 77 K. Controlled-impedance 50 Ω waveguides would require a method for reliable patterning narrow, less than 100-micron wide, YBCO traces over a meter length. We report a lithography-etching approach that minimizes the difference in the etching rate of YBCO and the metallization layers of Ag and Cu. An array of metalized vias isolates the traces. We describe the via metallization process that is not damaging to YBCO and compatible with dense, 2 mm period, arrays of vias.

An Ensemble Approach to Computationally Efficient Radiological Anomaly Detection and Isotope Identification

Radiological source search is a challenging task involving detection and identification of weak sources in a constantly changing radiological background. As of now, many radiological source detection algorithms have been proposed; however, their computational complexity, and hence reliance on power intensive processing units inhibit low-power applications of radiological source search systems. In this work, we introduce the anomaly filter (AF) algorithm; a computationally light, yet effective time-series source detection algorithm based on exponential weighted moving average (EWMA) and Poisson deviance statistics. Then, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can be used in ensemble with other more computationally intensive source detection and identification algorithms to achieve both increased detection performance and reduced power consumption. The proposed AF algorithm and the ensemble algorithms were thoroughly benchmarked against several existing source detection and identification algorithms. The results show that the AF algorithm outperforms existing conventional source detection algorithms, and the ensemble approach improves the overall performance of existing source detection and isotope identification algorithms. Furthermore, the AF algorithm and the Non-negative Matrix Factorization approach based source identification (NMF-ID) algorithm were combined and implemented on a singleboard microcontroller and the power consumption was measured. This ensemble algorithm reduced the power consumption of the NMF-ID algorithm almost by a factor of 100, while improving the detection performance of the overall system.

Status of SRNL Radiological Field Lysimeter Experiment (RadFLEx) – Year 7

The Radiological Field Lysimeter Experiment (RadFLEx) began in 2012 and is a collaboration between the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) and Clemson University. The purpose of this facility is to study the long-term (2 to 20 years) fate and transport of radionuclides in the Savannah River Site (SRS) vadose zone under natural field and meteorological conditions. The unique facility houses 48 5-L cores filled with sediments amended with various radionuclide sources. The results from these studies have been applied to the development of geochemical models used to assess the risk posed by subsurface nuclear waste disposal, environmental remediation, and waste form development. This report describes the refurbishment of the exterior of the RadFLEx facility and the synthesis and deployment of six plutonium(Pu) sources, four neptunium (Np) sources and one radium (Ra) source. It is anticipated that these newly installed lysimeter cores will be studied for up to 10 years.

Application of Nuclear Technology to Art Identification Problems: First Annual Report

Throughout the centuries, as man has become increasingly affluent, his interest in antiquities and objects of art, and the price he has been willing to pay for them, has increased. Inevitably, one result has been to attract the unscrupulous to the production and sale of counterfeit paintings, sculptures, and other works of art. The skill of forgers varies but often is highly sophisticated. However, dealers, museum curators, and other experts have also become more skillful in the detection of forgeries. Scientific tools of increasing sensitivity and sophistication have gradually been applied to the examination of the materials of art and archaeology. Such tools frequently support and render more reliable the judgment of the experts. The quality of forgeries may improve further as their makers become acquainted with the new methods of detection and in turn learn to circumvent or confound the methods. Therefore, the development of still more advanced methods of examination has great utility in the art world. This is particularly true if the ultimate effect is to make circumvention of the methods of examination so costly that the economic incentives for producing forgeries may be substantially reduced, if not eliminated.
