The surface structure and composition of 60017,43

A surface fragment of 60017, itself an exposed section of Shadow Rock, has been characterized structurally and chemically using gas adsorption, helium pycnometry, scanning electron microscopy, and Auger and ESCA spectroscopy. The fragment is seen as a partially melted devitrified-glass impact breccia possessing a relatively low surface area, macroporosity, and low absolute density. The fragment appears to be plagioclase-enriched with respect to 60017 and to possess significant surface heterogeneity. Confirmation of the surface reduction of iron was obtained; however, the extent of this reduction varied from point to point. Significant amounts of surface volatiles were also found, and it is hypothesized that these were released during the North Ray cratering event. If this is proved correct, similar volatile concentrations should be found on other North Ray ejecta.

Annual Conference on Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects, 14th, College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va., July 12-15, 1977, Proceedings

Topics related to processing and hardness assurance are considered, taking into account the radiation hardening of CMOS technologies, technological advances in the manufacture of radiation-hardened CMOS integrated circuits, CMOS hardness assurance through process controls and optimized design procedures, the application of operational amplifiers to hardened systems, a hard off-the-shelf SG1524 pulse width modulator, and the gamma-induced voltage breakdown anomaly in a Schottky diode. Basic mechanisms are examined, giving attention to chemical and structural aspects of the irradiation behavior of SiO2 films on silicon, experimental observations of the chemistry of the SiO2/Si interface, leakage current phenomena in irradiated SOS devices, the avalanche injection of holes into SiO2, the low-temperature radiation response of Al2O3 gate insulators, and neutron damage mechanisms in silicon at 10 K. Other subjects discussed are related to radiation effects in devices and circuits, space radiation effects, and aspects of simulation, energy deposition, and dosimetry.

New insights into the physical state of gaseous nebulae

The impact of knowledge of H II regions, planetary nebulae and supernova remnants due to International Ultraviolet Explorer is examined. The more relevant aspects related to the physical conditions of gaseous nebulae are reviewed. The following properties of gaseous nebulae are discussed: (1) density and temperature distribution; (2) ionization structure; (3) chemical composition; (4) internal dust; and (5) shock velocity for supernova remnants. The CNO abundances of planetary nebulae are compared with stellar evolution models.

The high-excitation planetary nebulae: NGC 3918 and IC 2448

International Ultraviolet Exploration observations of NGC 3918 and IC 2448 are presented. Combining these observations with data in the optical range and computed model structure, the chemical composition for these objects is derived. For NGC 3918 log C = -3.02, log N = -3.61 and log 0 = -3.22; while for IC 2448 log C = -3.44, log N = -81 and log 0 = 3.54.

Quantum chemical calculation of the equilibrium structures of small metal atom clusters

The application of ab initio quantum mechanical approaches in the study of metal atom clusters requires simplifying techniques that do not compromise the reliability of the calculations. Various aspects of the implementation of the effective core potential (ECP) technique for the removal of the metal atom core electrons from the calculation were examined. The ECP molecular integral formulae were modified to bring out the shell characteristics as a first step towards fulfilling the increasing need to speed up the computation of the ECP integrals. Work on the relationships among the derivatives of the molecular integrals that extends some of the techniques pioneered by Komornicki for the calculation of the gradients of the electronic energy was completed and a formulation of the ECP approach that quite naturally unifies the various state-of-the-art "shape- and Hamiltonian-consistent" techniques was discovered.

Application of surface analysis to solve problems of wear

Results are presented for the use of surface analytical tools including field ion microscopy, Auger emission spectroscopy analysis (AES), cylindrical mirror Auger analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Data from the field ion microscope reveal adhesive transfer (wear) at the atomic level with the formation of surface compounds not found in the bulk, and AES reveals that this transfer will occur even in the presence of surface oxides. Both AES and XPS reveal that in abrasive wear with silicon carbide and diamond contacting the transition metals, the surface and the abrasive undergo a chemical or structural change which effects wear. With silicon carbide, silicon volatilizes leaving behind a pseudo-graphitic surface and the surface of diamond is observed to graphitize.

Poly(aryl ethers) and related polysiloxane copolymer molecular coatings: Preparation and radiation degradation

The radiation degradation of poly(arylene ether sulfones) and related materials is studied. These basic studies are important both as a means to developing stronger, more stable matrix resins for composite materials, as well as to improve the data base in regard to chemical structure-physical property relationships. Thirty homo and copolymers were synthesized, at least partially characterized and, in several cases suitable film casting techniques were developed. Four samples were chosen for initial radiation degradation. Poly(dimethyl siloxane) soft bocks/segments can preferentially migrate to the surface of copolymer films. Since siloxanes are utilized as thermal control coatings, this form of 'molecular' coating is of interest. The chemistry for preparing such copolymers with any of the polymers described was demonstrated.

Quantum chemical calculation of the equilibrium structures of small metal atom clusters

Metal atom clusters are studied based on the application of ab initio quantum mechanical approaches. Because these large 'molecular' systems pose special practical computational problems in the application of the quantum mechanical methods, there is a special need to find simplifying techniques that do not compromise the reliability of the calculations. Research is therefore directed towards various aspects of the implementation of the effective core potential technique for the removal of the metal atom core electrons from the calculations.

Noble gas component organization in 14301

A study is conducted of the organization of noble gases in the Apollo 14 breccia 14301, giving particular attention to xenon from the extinct radionuclides I-129 and Pu-244. An essential ingredient of this work is the intercomparison between noble gases released in single-stage melts of grain size fractions and those released in stepwise extractions. This approach resolves 'functional' noble gas components, which are organized by siting, into the specific genetic contributions on the basis of the 'activation energies' for diffusive loss. The procedure makes it possible to resolve various genetic components on the basis of the chemical and structural differences in their specific locations. Consequently, distinctions can be made among components acquired by different processes and among components which have undergone different regolith histories.

Metallic particles in the glassy constituents of three lunar highland samples 65315, 67435 and 78235

Electron probe microanalysis and analytical electron microscopy techniques were employed to obtain structural and chemical analyses of metal particles in the size range of less than 1000 A and greater than 5 microns from the glassy constituents of 3 lunar highland samples 65315, 67435 and 78235. Most of the micron size metal particles in the glass coatings of the three samples are of meteoritic Co-Ni content. The Ni content of submicron metal often differs significantly from the micron size metal in the same glass. This difference can be explained by one of 3 reasons: (a) the presence of metal of different sizes and Ni contents in the rock prior to the shock event, (b) the presence of metal particles in the lunar soil of meteoritic or variable Ni content which were incorporated when the glass formed and (c) the production of submicroscopic Fe metal from the reduction of Fe(+2) in the shock produced melt.

Advanced Czochralski silicon growth technology for photovoltaic modules

Several economic analyses had indicated that large-diameter, multiple ingot growth using a single crucible with melt replenishment would be required for Cz growth to be economically viable. Based on the results of these analyses, two liquid and two solid feed melt replenishment approaches were initiated. The sequential solid feed melt replenishment approach, which demonstrated elements of technical feasibility is described in detail in this paper. Growth results of multiple ingots (10-cm-diameter, totaling 100 kg; and 15-cm-diameter, totaling 150 kg weight per crucible) are presented. Solar cells were fabricated and analyzed to evaluate the effects of structure and chemical purities as a result of multiple growth. The results indicate that, with semiconductor-grade silicon, feedstock impurity build-up does not seem to degrade cell performance. For polycrystalline cells, the average efficiencies are 15 to 25% lower than those of single crystalline cells. Concerns regarding single crystal yields, crucible quality and growth speed are indicated, and present status and future research thrusts are also discussed.

Anomalous behavior of the Pioneer Venus entry probes during lower descent

Four Pioneer Venus Probe spacecraft entered the Venusian atmosphere on December 9 1978, and descended to the surface while making in situ measurements of chemical composition, structure, and radiative balance. In the lower Venusian atmosphere, a number of anomalous events were noted in some of the scientific instruments and Probe engineering data. Many of these anomalies occurred on each of the Probes at approximately the same altitude. The anomalies are thought to be the result of some unexpected electrical interaction between the Probe and the Venusian atmosphere. This conclusion is based on analysis and testing of similar Probe hardware on the ground. However, the possibility that some anomalies were a result of latent design of manufacturing flaws cannot be ruled out.

Homogeneity of gels and gel-derived glasses

The significance and implications of gel preparation procedures in controlling the homogeneity of multicomponent oxide gels are discussed. The role of physicochemical factors such as the structure and chemical reactivities of alkoxides, the formation of double-metal alkoxides, and the nature of solvent(s) are critically analyzed in the context of homogeneity of gels during gelation. Three procedures for preparing gels in the SiO2-B2O3-Na2O system are examined in the context of cation distribution. Light scattering results for glasses in the SiO2-B2O3-Na2O system prepared by both the gel technique and the conventional technique are examined.

EL2 and related defects in GaAs - Challenges and pitfalls

The incorporation process of nonequilibrium vacancies in melt-grown GaAs is strongly complicated by deviations from stoichiometry and the presence of two sublattices. Many of the microdefects originating in these vacancies and their interactions introduce energy levels (shallow and deep) within the energy gap. The direct identification of the chemical or structural signature of these defects and its direct correlation to their electronic behavior is not generally possible. It is necessary, therefore, to rely on indirect methods and phenomenological models and deal with the associated pitfalls. EL2, a microdefect introducing a deep donor level, has been in the limelight in recent years because it is believed to be responsible for the semi-insulating behavior of undoped GaAs. Although much progress has been made towards understanding its origin and nature, some relevant questions remain unanswered. An attempt is made to assess the present status of understanding of EL2 in the light of most recent results.

Plasma assisted surface coating/modification processes: An emerging technology

A broad understanding of the numerous ion or plasma assisted surface coating/modification processes is sought. An awareness of the principles of these processes is needed before discussing in detail the ion nitriding technology. On the basis of surface modifications arising from ion or plasma energizing and interactions, it can be broadly classified as deposition of distinct overlay coatings (sputtering-dc, radio frequency, magnetron, reactive; ion plating-diode, triode) and surface property modification without forming a discrete coating (ion implantation, ion beam mixing, laser beam irradiation, ion nitriding, ion carburizing, plasma oxidation). These techniques offer a great flexibility and are capable in tailoring desirable chemical and structural surface properties independent of the bulk properties.
