Merging Concurrent Behaviors on a Redundant Manipulator

Task Space control of manipulators is extended both in the number of simultaneous behaviors and in the dimension of task space. An application is decomposed into multiple simultaneous behaviors whose resultant behavior will provide the motion necessary to execute the task. Each behavior generates commands in its own coordinate system. These simultaneous commands are merged in a motion space using impedance control to complete a resultant command to the manipulator. The task space of each behavior can have the dimensionality of the mechanism being controlled. Control of a seven degree of freedom manipulator is described here so the available task space for each behavior has dimensionality seven.

Concurrent Amorphization and Nanocatalyst Formation in Cu‐Substituted Perovskite Oxide Surface: Effects on Oxygen Reduction Reaction at Elevated Temperatures

Abstract The activity and durability of chemical/electrochemical catalysts are significantly influenced by their surface environments, highlighting the importance of thoroughly examining the catalyst surface. Here, Cu‐substituted La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3‐δ is selected, a state‐of‐the‐art material for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), to explore the real‐time evolution of surface morphology and chemistry under a reducing atmosphere at elevated temperatures. Remarkably, in a pioneering observation, it is discovered that the perovskite surface starts to amorphize at an unusually low temperature of approximately 100 °C and multicomponent metal nanocatalysts additionally form on the amorphous surface as the temperature raises to 400 °C. Moreover, this investigation into the stability of the resulting amorphous layer under oxidizing conditions reveals that the amorphous structure can withstand a high‐temperature oxidizing atmosphere (≥650 °C) only when it has undergone sufficient reduction for an extended period. Therefore, the coexistence of the active nanocatalysts and defective amorphous surface leads to a nearly 100% enhancement in the electrode resistance for the ORR over 200 h without significant degradation. These observations provide a new catalytic design strategy for using redox‐dynamic perovskite oxide host materials.

Concurrent Enhancement of Acetylene Uptake Capacity and Selectivity by Progressive Core Expansion and Extra–Framework Anions in Pore–Space–Partitioned Metal–Organic Frameworks

A multi-stage core-expansion method is proposed here as one component of the integrative binding-site/extender/core-expansion (BEC) strategy. The conceptual deconstruction of the partitioning ligand into three editable parts draws our focus onto progressive core expansion and allows the optimization of both acetylene uptake and selectivity. Herein the effectiveness of this strategy is shown through a family of eight cationic pore-partitioned materials containing three different partitioning ligands and various counter anions. The optimized structure, Co 3 -cpt-tph-Cl (Hcpt=4-(p-carboxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole, H-tph=(2,5,8-tri-(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4,6,7,9-hexaazaphenalene) with the largest surface area and highest C 2 H 2 uptake capacity (200 cm 3 /g at 298 K), also exhibits (desirably) the lowest CO 2 uptake and hence the highest C 2 H 2 /CO 2 selectivity. The successful boost in both C 2 H 2 capacity and IAST selectivity allows Co 3 -cpt-tph-Cl to rank among the best crystalline porous materials, ionic MOFs in particular, for C 2 H 2 uptake and C 2 H 2 /CO 2 experimental breakthrough separation.

Prenatal Ultrasound Analysis of Umbilical‐Portal‐Systemic Venous Shunts Concurrent With Trisomy 21

Objectives A classification termed umbilical‐portal‐systemic venous shunt (UPSVS) for an abnormal umbilical vein (UV), portal vein (PV), and ductus venosus (DV) was proposed recently. According to this classification, there are 3 types of UPSVSs: types I, II, and III. Trisomy 21 associated with UV‐PV‐DV anomalies has been described, but the incidence of trisomy 21 in UPSVS cases, the relationship between UPSVS types and trisomy 21, and the pregnancy outcome are poorly documented. This study aimed to address these issues. Methods All UPSVS cases diagnosed at our department from 2016 to 2019 were retrospectively studied. The English literature describing UV‐PV‐DV anomalies and trisomy 21 from 2000 to 2019 was searched, and the retrieved cases were analyzed. Results Four of 20 UPSVS cases identified by us also had trisomy 21, with 2 type I and 2 type II UPSVSs. Ultrasound markers of Down syndrome were observed in all 4 cases that underwent termination of pregnancy (TOP). The literature search retrieved 12 reports including 279 patients, with 29 also having trisomy 21, giving a pooled trisomy 21 incidence rate of 10.4%. Of the 29 cases, 16 had type I, and 9 had type II, whereas UPSVS types in 4 were undeterminable, and 22 cases underwent TOP. Conclusions There is a high incidence of trisomy 21 in UPSVS cases. Trisomy 21 is associated with a type I or II UPSVS. Most cases with the combined defect underwent TOP. These findings may be used to direct prenatal counseling and management of the combined condition.

AFRL Additive Manufacturing Modeling Series: Challenge 4, In Situ Mechanical Test of an IN625 Sample with Concurrent High-Energy Diffraction Microscopy Characterization

In this work, we describe 3D characterization of an additively manufactured Inconel 625 nickel-base superalloy specimen conducted during a uniaxial tension test using a suite of nondestructive x-ray techniques. High-energy diffraction microscopy in both near- and far-field modalities are employed in situ to track evolution of the material orientation and stress–strain fields at six points during the mechanical test, and these data streams are registered with micro-computed tomography reconstructions which probe the material density. This data volume was matched to a multi-modal serial sectioning characterization of the specimen taken after loading, described in this article’s companion. Twenty-eight grains which were monitored throughout the experiment were selected to form the basis for AFRL AM Modeling Series Challenge 4, Microscale Structure-to-Properties.

An Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) for concurrent measurements of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence and hyperspectral reflectance toward improving crop monitoring

Unmanned aerial system (UAS)-based remote sensing can provide high spatial- and temporal-resolution crop monitoring for precision management. Existing crop monitoring UAS primarily use conventional techniques such as multi-spectral broadband vegetation indices (VIs) to track canopy structure/biomass. Recently developed lightweight hyperspectral sensors can track crop physiology and performance via complementary signals such as solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and photochemical reflectance index (PRI) that can be derived from hyperspectral reflectance. However, few existing UAS can acquire high-quality SIF and hyperspectral reflectance. Here, we designed a novel UAS that simultaneously captures far-red SIF and hyperspectral reflectance, using a single bifurcated fiber and motorized arm to measure downwelling and upwelling irradiance. The UAS was tested over (1) a heterogeneous corn field with spatially varying crop yield potential and (2) a set of soybean and corn plots under differing nutrient treatments. Our UAS can maintain stability under low-to-moderate winds (2–3 m/s) with <0.4 m geolocation accuracy, <0.1 m altitude drift, and <1.5° error of the fiber optic from nadir position during scanning. Weekly seasonal campaigns reveal that SIF outperforms conventional VIs such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for distinguishing plots with different crop yield potential, especially after canopy closure when NDVI tends to saturate. The UAS can capture the diurnal dynamics of SIF and PRI for both corn and soybean. At the seasonal scale, SIF acquired from the UAS correlates well with that from a fixed SIF tower system ( R 2 = 0.81), which measured the same target albeit with different footprints, demonstrating the capability of UAS in characterizing the seasonal progression of crop activity. In conclusion, our newly developed UAS provides high-quality SIF and hyperspectral reflectance, facilitating mechanistic understanding of the physiological control on photosynthesis dynamics. Our findings also imply that this UAS could enable extension of fixed tower-based systems to monitor multiple targets from diurnal to seasonal scales and improve monitoring of heterogeneous fields.

Assessing concurrent effects of climate change on hydropower supply, electricity demand, and greenhouse gas emissions in the Upper Yangtze River Basin of China

Hydropower importantly provides flexible low-carbon electricity, however, climate change will affect the hydropower system through altering hydrologic regimes while also affecting electricity demands for heating and cooling that hydropower resources serve. This study assesses the effect of climate change on hydropower and electricity demand in the Upper Yangtze River Basin (UYRB) in China on the regional net electric load and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This is accomplished by using climate projections from five global climate models (GCMs) to simultaneously force (1) a physically-based hydrological model and a statistically-based hydropower model to estimate the future generating capacity of 21 large hydropower plants in the UYRB and (2) an empirical electricity demand model accounting for socioeconomic and climatic factors. Under climate change, the projected hydropower generation in the UYRB tends to increase in the 21st century but is far less than the increase in electricity demand, increasing the gap between demand and supply. Future increases in overall electricity demand are driven by GDP growth, but climate change will alter the distribution of the seasonal electricity demand. Climate warming decreases electricity demand for heating in winter and increases electricity demand for cooling in summer, but ultimately increases demand. Meanwhile, there is an increasing mismatch between electricity demand and hydropower supply associated with inter- and intra-annual variations, owing to the temporal climate change and increase in compound climate extremes (droughts and heatwaves). Finally, meeting the gap between supply and demand due to climate change is estimated to contribute 79.0–184.6 and 50.6–316.2 MMT CO 2e /yr of additional GHG emissions by the mid and end of 21st century, respectively.

Promoting electrochemical rates by concurrent ionic-electronic conductivity enhancement in high mass loading cathode electrode

Enhancing the fast charging capacity of thick electrodes with high mass loading is imperative in expediting the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Nonetheless, the insufficient charge transfer kinetics of thick electrodes hinder the movement of effective electrons and ions, hence diminishing capacity at high current rates. In this work, we applied sustainable and biodegradable cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as electrode additives. It is the first time to simultaneously improve the electronic conductivity by optimizing the carbon dispersion and establishing electron transfer networks, as well as boosting the ionic conductivity of electrodes by shortening the ion transfer pathway. Specifically, the LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 electrodes incorporating 1% dual functional CNCs additive exhibit improved effective electrical conductivity from 0.11 to 0.16 S/m and risen effective ionic conductivity from 0.36 to 0.62 S/m, in comparison to counterpart electrodes without CNCs. Therefore, the 1% CNC electrode with a high mass loading of 27.0 mg/cm 2 delivers a discharge capacity of 128 mAh/g at 1 C, which is superior to that of the CNC-free electrodes (95 mAh/g). In short, this study presents a novel environmentally friendly, economically viable, and dual-functional electrode additive that enhances both electronic and ionic conductivities with the aim of facilitating the widespread adoption of fast-charging high mass loading electrodes.
