Dynamics of quarks and gauge fields in the lowest-energy states in QCD and QED

The dynamics of quarks and gauge fields in the lowest energy states in QCD and QED interactions is studied by compactifying the (3+1)D space-time to the (1+1)D space-time with cylindrical symmetry and by combining Schwinger's longitudinal confinement in (1+1)D with Polyakov's transverse confinement in (2+1)D. Using the action integral, we separate out the transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom. By solving the derived transverse and longitudinal equations, we study the QCD and QED collective excitations. In addition to the well known QCD low-energy states, we find stable collective QED excitations showing up as massive QED-confined mesons, in support of previous studies. In particular, the masses of the recently observed X17 particle at about 17 MeV and the E38 particle at about 38 MeV are calculated in the developed approach, in good agreement with experimental results.

Observation of the Rare Decay of the 𝜂 Meson to Four Muons

A search for the rare η → μ + μ − μ + μ − double-Dalitz decay is performed using a sample of proton-proton collisions, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with high-rate muon triggers in 2017-2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb −1 . A signal having a statistical significance well in excess of 5 standard deviations is observed. Using the η → μ + μ − decay as normalization, the branching fraction B(η → μ + μ − μ + μ − ) = [5.0 ± 0.8 (stat) ± 0.7 (syst) ± 0.7 (B 2μ )] × 10 −9 is measured, where the last term is the uncertainty in the normalization channel branching fraction. This work achieves an improved precision of over five orders of magnitude compared to previous results, leading to the first measurement of this branching fraction, which is found to agree with theoretical predictions.

Υ production and nuclear modification at forward rapidity in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production of Υ mesons in Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is measured with the muon spectrometer of the ALICE detector at the LHC. The yields as well as the nuclear modification factors are determined in the forward rapidity region 2.5 < y < 4.0, as a function of rapidity, transverse momentum and collision centrality. The results show that the production of the Υ(1S) meson is suppressed by a factor of about three with respect to the production in proton– proton collisions. For the first time, a significant signal for the Υ(2S) meson is observed at forward rapidity, indicating a suppression stronger by about a factor 2–3 with respect to the ground state. The measurements are compared with transport, hydrodynamic, comover and statistical hadronisation model calculations.

Measurement of beam asymmetry for π – Δ ++ photoproduction on the proton at E γ = 8.5 GeV

We report a measurement of the $\pi^-$ photoproduction beam asymmetry for the reaction $\vec{\gamma} p \rightarrow \pi^- \Delta^{++}$ using data from the GlueX experiment in the photon beam energy range 8.2--8.8 GeV. The asymmetry $\Sigma$ is measured as a function of four-momentum transfer $t$ to the $\Delta^{++}$ and compared to phenomenological models. We find that $\Sigma$ varies as a function of $t$: negative at smaller values and positive at higher values of $|t|$. The reaction can be described theoretically by $t$-channel particle exchange requiring pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor intermediaries. In particular, this reaction requires charge exchange, allowing us to probe pion exchange and the significance of higher-order corrections to one-pion exchange at low momentum transfer. Constraining production mechanisms of conventional mesons may aid in the search for and study of unconventional mesons. Furthermore, this is the first measurement of the process at this energy.

Search for X ( 3872 ) → π 0 π 0 χ c 1 , 2

Using 10.1 fb − 1 of e + e − collision data collected by the BESIII detector with center-of-mass energies between 4.15 GeV and 4.30 GeV, we search for the decays X ( 3872 ) → π 0 π 0 χ c 1 , 2 , where the X ( 3872 ) is produced in e + e − → γ X ( 3872 ) . No evidence above 3 σ is found for either decay. Upper limits at the 90% CL on the branching fractions of X ( 3872 ) → π 0 π 0 χ c 1 , 2 normalized to the branching fraction of X ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ are set to be B ( X ( 3872 ) → π 0 π 0 χ c 1 ) / B ( X ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ ) < 1.1 and B ( X ( 3872 ) → π 0 π 0 χ c 2 ) / B ( X ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ ) < 0.5 , taking into account both statistical and systematic uncertainties. Production of $π^0$ and $\eta$ mesons in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 192$ $\mathrm {GeV}$

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured $π^0$ and $\eta$ mesons at midrapidity in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 192$ $\mathrm {GeV}$ in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the $π^0(η) → γγ$ decay modes. A strong suppression of $π^0$ and $\eta$ meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions relative to binary scaled p + p results. Yields of $π^0$ and $\eta$ mesons measured in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions show similar suppression pattern to those measured in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 200$ $\mathrm {GeV}$ for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The $η/π^0$ ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and $e^+e^-$ collisions.

Search for Lepton-Flavor-Violating Decay Modes 𝐵 0 →𝐾$^0_𝑆$⁢𝜏 ± ⁢ℓ ∓ with Hadronic 𝐵 Tagging at Belle and Belle II

We present the first search for the lepton-flavor-violating decay modes 𝐵 0 →𝐾$^0_𝑆$⁢𝜏 ± ⁢ℓ ∓ (ℓ=𝜇,𝑒) using the 711 and 365 fb −1 data samples recorded by the Belle and Belle II detectors, respectively. We use a hadronic 𝐵-tagging technique to fully reconstruct a 𝐵 meson and search for signal decays in the system recoiling against the tagged meson, considering 𝜏 decays to either light leptons, one charged hadron, or one charged hadron and a neutral pion. We find no evidence for 𝐵 0 →𝐾$^0_𝑆$⁢𝜏 ± ⁢ℓ ∓ decays and set 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range of [0.8,3.6] ×10 −5 .

Test of lepton flavor universality in semileptonic 𝐵$^+_𝑐$ meson decays in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the ratio of branching fractions 𝑅⁢(𝐽/𝜓) =ℬ⁡(𝐵$^+_𝑐$ →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 )/ℬ⁡(𝐵$^+_𝑐$ →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜇 + ⁢𝜈 𝜇 ) in the 𝐽/𝜓 →𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − , 𝜏 + →𝜇 + ⁢𝜈 𝜇 ⁢$\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜏 decay channel is presented. This measurement uses a sample of proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment in 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 59.7 fb −1 . The measured ratio, 𝑅⁢(𝐽/𝜓) = 0.1⁢7$^{+0.18}_{−0.17}⁢$(stat)$^{+0.21}_{−0.22⁢}$(syst)$^{+0.19}_{−0.18}$⁢(theo) =0.17 ± 0.33, agrees with the value of 0.2582 ± 0.0038 predicted by the standard model, which assumes lepton flavor universality. By testing lepton flavor universality, this measurement is a probe of new physics using 𝐵$^+_𝑐$ mesons, which are currently only produced at the LHC.

Amplitude/operator basis in chiral perturbation theory

We establish a systematic construction of the on-shell amplitude/operator basis for Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) in D = 4 spacetime dimensions and with an arbitrary number of flavors N f . For kinematic factors, we employ spinor-helicity variables to construct the soft blocks, which are local amplitudes satisfying the Adler’s zero condition, as well as to take into account the reduction in the kinematic basis due to the Gram determinant, which arises at O(p 10 ) when the number of multiplicity N in an amplitude becomes large: N > D. For flavor factors, we include group-theoretic relations at small N f , N f ≤ N, which decreases the flavor basis. The result is obtained by adapting the Young tensor method of constructing the operator basis for generic effective field theories to the case of non-linearly realized symmetries. Working in the massless quark limit, we present purely mesonic operators for both even- and odd-parity at O(p 6 ) and O(p 8 ) for N = 6 and arbitrary N f , and establish a direct correspondence between the amplitude basis and the operator basis. Furthermore, the redundancy due to the Gram determinant is studied at O(p 10 ) for N = 6, 8 and 10.

Vector meson photoproduction in UPCs with FoCal

Abstract We discuss the physics prospects of photon-induced measurements using the high-granularity FoCal detector to be installed at the ALICE experiment, covering the pseudorapidity interval 3.4 ≤ η ≤ 5.8. This new detector, scheduled to be in operation from Run 4, will explore the small Bjorken- x physics region in an unprecedented way. In this region the gluon ,saturation phenomenon is expected to be dominant. Combined with the rest of the ALICE subdetectors, including the zero degree calorimenters, FoCal will serve to reconstruct in a model-independent way the measured photoproduction cross sections for vectors mesons in a wide range of photon-target energies, down to x values of about 7 × 10 −6 and 2 × 10 −6 in ultra-peripheral photon–proton and photon–lead collisions, respectively.

Hyperstealth dark matter and long-lived particles

A new dark matter candidate is proposed that arises as the lightest baryon from a confining 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(𝑁) gauge theory which equilibrates with the Standard Model only through electroweak interactions. Surprisingly, this candidate can be as light as a few GeV. The lower bound arises from the intersection of two competing requirements: (i) the equilibration sector of the model must be sufficiently heavy, at least several TeV, to avoid bounds from colliders, and (ii) the lightest dark meson (that may be the dark 𝜂′, 𝜎, or the lightest glueball) has suppressed interactions with the SM and must decay before big bang nucleosynthesis. The low-energy dark sector consists of one flavor that is electrically neutral and an almost electroweak singlet. The dark matter candidate is the lightest baryon consisting of 𝑁 of these light flavors leading to a highly suppressed elastic scattering rate with the Standard Model (SM). The equilibration sector consists of vectorlike dark quarks that transform under the electroweak group, ensuring that the dark sector can reach thermal equilibrium with the SM in the early Universe. The lightest dark meson lifetimes vary between 10 −3 ≲ 𝑐⁢𝜏 ≲ 10 7 m, providing an outstanding target for LHC production and experimental detection. We delineate the interplay between the lifetime of the light mesons, the suppressed direct detection cross section of the lightest baryon, and the scale of equilibration sector that can be probed at the LHC.

Search for the rare hadronic decay $B^0_s → p\overline{p}$

A search for the rare hadronic decay B s 0 → p p ¯ is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb - 1 . No evidence of the decay is found and an upper limit on its branching fraction is set at B ( B s 0 → p p ¯ ) < 4.4 ( 5.1 ) × 10 - 9 at 90% (95%) confidence level; this is currently the world’s best upper limit. The decay mode B 0 → p p ¯ is measured with very large significance, confirming the first observation by the LHCb experiment in 2017. The branching fraction is determined to be B ( B 0 → p p ¯ ) = ( 1.27 ± 0.15 ± 0.05 ± 0.04 ) × 10 - 8 , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the external branching fraction of the normalization channel B 0 → K + π - . The combination of the two LHCb measurements of the B 0 → p p ¯ branching fraction yields B ( B 0 → p p ¯ ) = ( 1.27 ± 0.13 ± 0.05 ± 0.03 ) × 10 - 8 .

Test of Light-Lepton Universality in the Rates of Inclusive Semileptonic B-Meson Decays at Belle II

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B -meson decays, R ( X e / μ ) = B ( B → X e ν ) / B ( B → X μ ν ) , a precision test of electron-muon universality, using data corresponding to 189 fb - 1 from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. In events where the partner B meson is fully reconstructed, we use fits to the lepton momentum spectra above 1.3 GeV / c to obtain R ( X e / μ ) = 1.007 ± 0.009 ( stat ) ± 0.019 ( syst ) , which is the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind and agrees with the standard-model expectation.

Searching for millicharged particles with 1 kg of Skipper-CCDs using the NuMI beam at Fermilab

Oscura is a planned light-dark matter search experiment using Skipper-CCDs with a total active mass of 10 kg. As part of the detector development, the collaboration plans to build the Oscura Integration Test (OIT), an engineering test with 10% of the total mass. Here we discuss the early science opportunities with the OIT to search for millicharged particles (mCPs) using the NuMI beam at Fermilab. mCPs would be produced at low energies through photon-mediated processes from decays of scalar, pseudoscalar, and vector mesons, or direct Drell-Yan productions. Estimates show that the OIT would be a world-leading probe for mCPs in the ~MeV mass range.

The various source mechanisms for celestial gamma rays are reviewed. The gamma-ray data are examined as a source of information about the processes and source locations for the production of charged particle cosmic rays, galactic structure, explosive nucleosynthesis in supernovae, regions of confinement for cosmic rays, regions where matter-antimatter annihilation occurs, and the general condition in cosmological space both in the past and present. Topics include gamma rays from pi mesons by nuclear interactions, nuclear and supernovae lines, diffuse emission and discrete sources, interstellar absorption and detection of gamma rays, and others. A brief view of the available gamma-ray detection systems and techniques is presented.

Measurement of the Lifetime and Λ Separation Energy of H Λ 3

The most precise measurements to date of the $^{3}_{Λ}$H lifetime τ and Λ separation energy B Λ are obtained using the data sample of Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV collected by ALICE at the LHC. The $^{3}_{Λ}$H is reconstructed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel ($^{3}_{Λ}$H → 3 He + π – and the charge-conjugate process). The measured values τ = [253 ± 11 (stat.) ± 6(syst.)] ps and B Λ = [102 ± 63 (stat.) ± 67 (syst.)] keV are compatible with predictions from effective field theories and confirm that the $^{3}_{Λ}$H structure is consistent with a weakly-bound system.
