Real Time Phase Noise Meter Based on a Digital Signal Processor

A digital signal-processing meter for phase noise measurement on sinusoidal signals is dealt with. It enlists a special hardware architecture, made up of a core digital signal processor connected to a data acquisition board, and takes advantage of a quadrature demodulation-based measurement scheme, already proposed by the authors. Thanks to an efficient measurement process and an optimized implementation of its fundamental stages, the proposed meter succeeds in exploiting all hardware resources in such an effective way as to gain high performance and real-time operation. For input frequencies up to some hundreds of kilohertz, the meter is capable both of updating phase noise power spectrum while seamlessly capturing the analyzed signal into its memory, and granting as good frequency resolution as few units of hertz.

Upgrade of DIII-D radial interferometer–polarimeter for large bandwidth, low noise, and toroidal mode number measurements

Near ion-cyclotron frequency (f ci ) fluctuations, such as those originating from Global and Compressional Alfvén Eigenmodes (GAEs/CAEs), are expected to be present in future fusion reactors but are not well understood due to the limited availability of core measurements in present-day tokamaks. The measurement bandwidth of the Radial Interferometer–Polarimeter (RIP) diagnostic has been upgraded from 1 to 5 MHz to detect these fluctuations in DIII-D. RIP adopts the three-wave technique for simultaneous polarimetric and interferometric measurements. Solid-state microwave sources operating at 650 GHz are used as probe beams and provide 5 MHz bandwidth for both polarimetric and interferometric measurements. Bandwidths of related hardware, including mixer amplifier, signal cable, and digital phase demodulator, are increased correspondingly. Measurement noise is minimized by reducing the time delay between reference and probe signals to nanosecond level and employing correlation-based techniques. Using the upgraded diagnostic, CAE/GAE-like bursting fluctuations are observed in neutral-beam heated plasmas with toroidal magnetic field B φ ≈ 1 T. Current upgrades being undertaken would enable the evaluation of toroidal mode number for these modes. Furthermore, this work opens the possibility of better understanding near ion-cyclotron frequency fluctuations in fusion relevant plasmas.

Fiber-optic bolometer with low detection limit fabricated using thermal release tape and precise laser heating

Fiber-optic bolometers (FOBs) based on a fiber-tipped silicon Fabry–Perot (FP) interferometric temperature sensor and a gold disk absorber have been shown to be an attractive alternative to conventional resistive bolometers for plasma radiation measurement in fusion devices. Either a high-finesse FP or a low-finesse FP can be used, each with trade-offs between noise performance and fabrication complexity. In this paper, we present an FOB design that overcomes these limitations by combining a low-finesse long silicon FP cavity with a large gold disk absorber to achieve enhanced sensitivity and noise performance without increasing the fabrication complexity and the time constant. We also demonstrated a fabrication method for the sensor head facilitated by thermal release tape and precise laser heating. Our FOB demonstrates a temperature resolution of 0.08 mK, a cooling time constant of 230 ms, and a noise equivalent power density of 0.015 W m −2 . This represents an eightfold improvement over previous high-finesse FOBs and 26-fold improvement over previous low-finesse FOBs with similar demodulation bandwidths and similar cooling time constants.

Accelerated Over-The-Air Neural Receiver Training Using Self-Contrastive Learning

Self-contrastive learning (SCL), a self-supervised learning method, has been shown to improve image and signal classifier accuracies and reduce the training time for neural communications receivers. In particular, prior work has shown that SCL applied as a pre-training step can improve simulated performance of OFDM in 3GPP TDL channel models by reducing the training time of the downstream classification task (demodulation and demapping). In this work a practical implementation demonstrating SCL pre-training using software defined radios (SDRs) is proposed.

DOE SCGSR Final Report - Project Accomplishments and Additional Materials

The major accomplishments of my project were successfully developing and testing the laser interferometry diagnostic on the Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This diagnostic helped advance my research by providing a simpler way to obtain electron density measurements of magnetized plasmas compared to other electron density diagnostics such as triple Langmuir probes. The laser used was a 561 nm continuous wave (CW) diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser. The PLX laser interferometry diagnostic consists of two parts. These include the launching and receiving sides of the laser diagnostic. The launching side consists of the main laser beam from the DPSS laser being split into five chords(probe beams) and a reference beam which are then directed with fiber optic couplers into fiber optic cables which transmit the probe beamsto the PLX vacuum chamber. The probe beams then pass through the plasma in the chamber and into the receiving side optics where they are again directed through fiber optic cables to be combined with the reference beam. The combined beams are transmitted via multi-mode fiber optic cables to photodiodes to convert the light signals into electrical signals. Before the electrical signals get digitized, they pass through bandpass and low pass filters to eliminate electromagnetic noise and unwanted frequencies. The electrical signals are then processed by IQ demodulators to determine phase angle difference between the probe and reference beams for each chord in order to calculate line-integrated electron density.

Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS): 90 GHz Telescope Pointing, Beam Profile, Window Function, and Polarization Performance

The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) is a telescope array that observes the cosmic microwave background (CMB) over ∼75% of the sky from the Atacama Desert, Chile, at frequency bands centered near 40, 90, 150, and 220 GHz. CLASS measures the large angular scale CMB polarization to constrain the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the optical depth to last scattering. This paper presents the optical characterization of the 90 GHz telescope. Observations of the Moon establish the pointing while dedicated observations of Jupiter are used for beam calibration. The standard deviations of the pointing error in azimuth, elevation, and boresight angle are 1$^{'}_.$3, 2$^{'}_.$1, and 2$^{'}_.$0, respectively, over the first 3 yr of observations. This corresponds to a pointing uncertainty ∼7% of the beam’s full width at half-maximum (FWHM). The effective azimuthally symmetrized instrument 1D beam estimated at 90 GHz has an FWHM of 0$^°_.$620 ± 0$^°_.$003 and a solid angle of 138.7 ± 0.6(stats.) ± 1.1(sys.) μsr integrated to a radius of 4°. The corresponding beam window function drops to $b^2_ℓ$ = 0.93, 0.71, 0.14 at ℓ = 30, 100, 300, respectively. Far-sidelobes are studied using detector-centered intensity maps of the Moon and measured to be at a level of 10 −3 or below relative to the peak. The polarization angle of Tau A estimated from preliminary survey maps is 149°.6 ± 0°.2(stats.) in equatorial coordinates. The instrumental temperature-to-polarization (T → P) leakage fraction, inferred from per-detector demodulated Jupiter scan data, has a monopole component at the level of 1.7 × 10 −3 , a dipole component with an amplitude of 4.3 × 10 −3 , with no evidence of quadrupolar leakage.

Improved design provides faster response time in photomultiplier

Dynamic Crossed-Field Electron Multiplying /DCFEM/ light demodulator avoids the normal response time limitations inherent in static field devices by using time varying crossed electric and static magnetic fields. This eliminates the transit time spread that affects electrons as they proceed along the secondary emission stages of the tube.
