Search for charged lepton flavor violating 𝑍 and 𝑍′ boson decays in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for flavor violating decays of the 𝑍 boson to charged leptons is performed using data from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . Each of the decays 𝑍 → 𝑒⁢𝜇, 𝑍 → 𝑒⁢𝜏, and 𝑍 → 𝜇⁢𝜏 is considered. The data are consistent with the backgrounds expected from standard model processes. For the 𝑍 → 𝑒⁢𝜇 channel the observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction is 1.9⁢(2.0) × 10 −7 , which is the most stringent direct limit to date on this process; the corresponding limits for the 𝑍 → 𝑒⁢𝜏 and 𝑍 → 𝜇⁢𝜏 channels are 13.8⁢(11.4) × 10 −6 and 12.0⁢(5.3) × 10 −6 , respectively. Additionally, the 𝑒⁢𝜇 final state is used to search for lepton flavor violating decays of 𝑍′ resonances in the mass range from 110 to 500 GeV. No significant excess is observed above the predicted background levels.

Mesogenesis through the ephemeral dark decay of Beauty

Mesogenesis provides a path for generating the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, using only the CP violation furnished by the Standard Model in the decay of B mesons. While this is an intriguing possibility, it is largely constrained by the data on B meson branching fractions into baryons and missing energy carried into the dark sector. We point out that it is possible to make this branching fraction dominant only in the early Universe, through an ultralight scalar coupled to the dark sector and the Standard Model leptons. A scenario is examined where the thermal density of muons in the early Universe temporarily lowers the mass of a dark fermion, allowing for efficient B meson decays. This `dark’ decay channel is shut off later when the muon number density falls, making the scenario compatible with flavor data. Our model can be consistent with the LHC constraints on color-charged heavy bosons required to implement Mesogenesis; such states may be discovered in the future runs as their masses cannot be far above the current bounds. We also outline other possible signals, which can arise in future displaced vertex searches, long range force searches, and observations of neutron star binary mergers.

Search for events with one displaced vertex from long-lived neutral particles decaying into hadronic jets in the ATLAS muon spectrometer in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

A search for events with one displaced vertex from long-lived particles using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is presented, using 140 fb −1 of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ =13 TeV recorded in 2015–2018. The search employs techniques for reconstructing vertices of long-lived particles decaying into hadronic jets in the muon spectrometer displaced between 3 m and 14 m from the primary interaction vertex. The observed number of events is consistent with the expected background and limits for several benchmark signals are determined. A scalar-portal model and a Higgs-boson-portal baryogenesis model are considered. A dedicated analysis channel is employed to target Z-boson associated long-lived particle production, including an axionlike particle and a dark photon model. For the Higgs boson model, branching fractions above 1% are excluded at 95% confidence level for long-lived particle proper decay lengths ranging from 5 cm to 40 m. For the photophobic axionlike particle model considered, this search produces the strongest limits to date for proper decay lengths greater than 𝒪⁡(10) cm.

Measurement of the ratio of the $𝐵^+_𝑐 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜏^+⁢𝜈_𝜏$ and $𝐵^+_𝑐 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜇^+⁢𝜈_𝜇$ branching fractions using three-prong 𝜏 lepton decays

The ratio between the $𝐵^+_𝑐 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜏^+⁢𝜈_𝜏$ and $𝐵^+_𝑐 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜇^+⁢𝜈_𝜇$ branching fractions is measured using a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected by CMS at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in the years 2016–2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The 𝐽/𝜓 meson is identified through its 𝐽/𝜓 → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − decay and the tau lepton is reconstructed in the hadronic three-prong final state. The measured ratio of branching fractions in this tau decay mode, ℛ had 𝐽/𝜓 = $1.0⁢4^{+0.50}_{−0.44}$, is combined with the previous analysis based on the 𝜏 + $→ 𝜇^+⁢𝜈_𝜇\bar{𝜈}_𝜏$ leptonic decay channel, leading to ℛ 𝐽/𝜓 = 0.49 ± 0.26. As this result is consistent with the standard model prediction of 0.258 ± 0.004, no evidence of lepton flavor universality violation is found.

Deviations from the Porter-Thomas Distribution due to Nonstatistical 𝛾 Decay below the 150 Nd Neutron Separation Threshold

We introduce a new method for the study of fluctuations of partial transition widths based on nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments with quasimonochromatic linearly polarized photon beams below particle separation thresholds. It is based on the average branching of decays of 𝐽=1 states of an even-even nucleus to the 2$^{+}_{1}$ state in comparison to the ground state. Between 5 and 7 MeV, a constant average branching ratio for 𝛾 decays from 1 − states of 0.490(16) is observed for the nuclide 150 Nd. Assuming 𝜒 2 -distributed partial transition widths, this average branching ratio is related to a degree of freedom of 𝜈 = 1.93⁢(12), rejecting the validity of the Porter-Thomas distribution, requiring 𝜈 = 1. The observed deviation can be explained by nonstatistical effects in the 𝛾-decay behavior with contributions in the range of 9.4(10)% up to 94(10)%.

Spontaneous magnon decays from nonrelativistic time-reversal symmetry breaking in altermagnets

Quasiparticles are central to condensed matter physics, but their stability can be undermined by quantum many-body interactions. Magnons, i.e., quasiparticles in quantum magnets, are particularly intriguing because their properties are governed by both real and spin space. While crystal symmetries may be low, spin interactions often remain approximately isotropic, limiting spontaneous magnon decay. Textbook wisdom holds that collinear Heisenberg magnets follow a dichotomy: ferromagnets host stable magnons, while antiferromagnetic magnons may decay depending on dispersion curvature. Up to now, relativistic spin-orbit coupling and noncollinear order that connect spin space to real space were shown to introduce more complex magnon instability mechanisms. Here, we show that even in nonrelativistic isotropic collinear systems, this conventional dichotomy is disrupted in altermagnets. Altermagnets, a newly identified class of collinear magnets, exhibit compensated spin order with nonrelativistic time-reversal symmetry breaking and even-parity band splitting. Using kinematic analysis, nonlinear spin-wave theory, and quantum simulations, we reveal that even weak band splitting opens a decay phase space, driving quasiparticle breakdown. Additionally, 𝑑-wave altermagnets form a rare “island of stability” at the Brillouin-zone center. Furthermore, our findings establish a quasiparticle stability trichotomy in collinear Heisenberg magnets and position altermagnets as a promising platform for unconventional spin dynamics.

Constituent model of light hybrid meson decays

A model of light hybrid mesons and their strong decays is developed. The model employs a gluonic quasiparticle to describe low energy gluodynamics and uses the QCD Hamiltonian in Coulomb gauge to guide the construction of states and decay amplitudes. We compute the partial widths of the twelve low lying isovector and vector hybrids. Implications of these results on hybrid searches are also made, with the chief conclusions being that direct observation of the vector states will be difficult, that a hybrid π ( 1800 ) has distinctive decay characteristics, a narrow η ( 1900 ) hybrid should exist, an η 1 ( 1750 ) should be sought, and that the exotic nature of J P C = 2 − + hybrid mesons should be discernible with sufficient data. We argue that the isovector π 2 hybrid has been discovered, giving a total of four possible hybrid mesons, π 1 ( 1600 ) , η 1 ( 1855 ) , π ( 1800 ) , and π 2 ( 2360 ) , which appear to be filling out the low lying hybrid supermultiplet in the expected fashion. Illuminating all-hadronic final states with a photon: Exotic decays of the Higgs boson to four bottom quarks in vector boson fusion plus gamma at hadron colliders

We investigate the potential to detect Higgs boson decays to four bottom quarks through a pair of pseudoscalars, a final state that is predicted by many theories beyond the Standard Model. For the first time, the signal sensitivity is evaluated for the final state using the vector boson fusion (VBF) production with and without an associated photon, for the Higgs at m H = 125 GeV , at hadron colliders. The signal significance is 0.5 σ to 6 σ , depending on the pseudoscalar mass m a , when setting the Higgs decay branching ratio to unity, using an integrated luminosity of 150 fb − 1 at s = 13 TeV . This corresponds to an upper limit of 0.3, on the Higgs branching ratio to four bottom quarks, with a nonobservation of the decay. We also consider several variations of selection requirements—input variables for the VBF tagging and the kinematic variables for the photon—that could help guide the design of new triggers for the Run-3 period of the LHC and for the HL-LHC. Observation of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λ c + → Σ − K + π +

The singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λ c + → Σ − K + π + is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 5.4 σ by using 4.5 fb − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.600 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. This is the first observation of a Cabibbo-suppressed Λ c + decay involving Σ − in the final state. The ratio of branching fractions between Λ c + → Σ − K + π + and the Cabibbo-favored decay Λ c + → Σ − π + π + is observed to be ( 0.4 ± 0.1 ) s c 2 , where s c ≡ sin θ c = 0.2248 with θ c the Cabibbo mixing angle. Search for long-lived heavy neutral leptons decaying in the CMS muon detectors in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying in the CMS muon system is presented. A data sample is used corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV , recorded at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018. Decay products of long-lived HNLs could interact with the shielding materials in the CMS muon system and create hadronic and electromagnetic showers detected in the muon chambers. This distinctive signature provides a unique handle to search for HNLs with masses below 4 GeV and proper decay lengths of the order of meters. The signature is sensitive to HNL couplings to all three generations of leptons. Candidate events are required to contain a prompt electron or muon originating from a vertex on the beam axis and a displaced shower in the muon chambers. No significant deviations from the standard model background expectation are observed. In the electron (muon) channel, the most stringent limits to date are set for HNLs in the mass range of 2.1–3.0 (1.9–3.3) GeV, reaching mixing matrix element squared values as low as 8.6 ( 4.6 ) × 10 - 6 .

Search for the rare decay of charmed baryon Λ c + into the p μ + μ − final state

A search for the nonresonant Λ c + → p μ + μ − decay is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 . No evidence for the decay is found in the dimuon invariant-mass regions where the expected contributions of resonances is subdominant. Decaying sterile neutrinos at short baselines

Long-standing anomalous experimental results from short-baseline neutrino experiments have persisted for decades. These results, when interpreted with one or more light sterile neutrinos, are inconsistent with numerous null results experimentally. However, if the sterile neutrino decays en route to the detector, this can mimic ν μ → ν e oscillation signals while avoiding many of these external constraints. We revisit this solution to the MiniBooNE and LSND puzzles in view of new data from the MicroBooNE experiment at Fermilab. Using MicroBooNE’s liquid-argon time-projection chamber search for an excess of ν e in the Booster beam, we derive new limits in two models’ parameter spaces of interest; where the sterile neutrino decays (I) via mixing with the active neutrinos, or (II) via higher-dimensional operators. We also provide an updated, comprehensive fit to the MiniBooNE neutrino- and antineutrino-beam data, including appearance ( ν e ) and disappearance ( ν μ ) channels. Despite alleviating the tension with muon neutrino disappearance experiments, we find that the latest MicroBooNE analysis rules out the decaying sterile neutrino solution in a large portion of the parameter space at more than 99% CL. Spectroscopic search for optical emission lines from dark matter decay

We search for narrow-line optical emission from dark matter decay by stacking dark-sky spectra from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) at the redshift of nearby galaxies from DESI’s Bright Galaxy and Luminous Red Galaxy samples. Our search uses regions separated by 5 to 20 arcsec from the centers of the galaxies, corresponding to an impact parameter of approximately 50 kpc. No unidentified spectral line shows up in the search, and we place a line flux limit of 10 −19 ergs/s/cm 2 /arcsec 2 on emissions in the wavelength range of 2000–9000⁢ Å. This places the tightest constraints yet on the two-photon decay of dark matter in the mass range of 5 to 12 eV, with a particle lifetime exceeding 3 × 10 25 s. Furthermore, this detection limit also implies that the line surface brightness contributed from all dark matter along the line of sight is at least 2 orders of magnitude lower than the measured extragalactic background light (EBL), ruling out the possibility that narrow optical-line emission from dark matter decay is a major source of the EBL.

Model-independent determination of the strong-phase difference between D 0 and D ¯ 0 → π + π − π + π − decays

Measurements of the strong-phase difference between D 0 and D ¯ 0 → π + π − π + π − are performed in bins of phase space. The study exploits a sample of quantum-correlated D D ¯ mesons collected by the BESIII experiment in e + e − collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb − 1 . Here, D denotes a neutral charm meson in a superposition of flavor eigenstates. The reported results are valuable for measurements of the C P -violating phase γ (also denoted ϕ 3 ) in B ± → D K ± , D → π + π − π + π − decays, and the binning schemes are designed to provide good statistical sensitivity to this parameter. The expected uncertainty on γ arising from the precision of the strong-phase measurements, when applied to very large samples of B -meson decays, is around 1.5° or 2°, depending on the binning scheme. The binned strong-phase parameters are combined to give a value of F + 4 π = 0.746 ± 0.010 ± 0.004 for the C P -even fraction of D 0 → π + π − π + π − decays, which is around 30% more precise than the previous best measurement of this quantity. Model-independent description of B → D π ℓ ν decays

We introduce a new parametrization of B → D π ℓ ν form factors using a partial-wave expansion and derive bounds on the series coefficients using analyticity and unitarity. This is the first generalization of the model-independent formalism developed by Boyd, Grinstein, and Lebed for B → D ℓ ν to semileptonic decays with multihadron final states, and enables data-driven form-factor determinations with robust, systematically improvable uncertainties. Using this formalism, we extract the form-factor parameters for B → D 2 * ( → D π ) ℓ ν decays in a model-independent way from fits of data from the Belle Experiment. We find that the semileptonic data are compatible with the presence of two poles in the D π S-wave channel, which is the scenario preferred by nonleptonic decays and unitarized chiral perturbation theory.
