Control of Nonlinear Compton Scattering in a Squeezed Vacuum

Electromagnetic radiation by accelerated charges is a fundamental process in physics. Here, we introduce a quantum-optical framework for controlling the emission of radiation of an electron in an intense laser field via squeezed vacuum states. By engineering the quantum fluctuations of the emission modes, we demonstrate that the probability of nonlinear Compton scattering can be significantly enhanced or suppressed through tunable squeezing amplitude and angle. We show numerically that our predictions are experimentally accessible with current squeezing technologies, establishing a new paradigm for quantum control in high-intensity light-matter interactions.

Unique Forbidden Beta Decays at Zero Momentum Transfer

We report an exploratory study of the 𝒪⁡(𝛼) structure-dependent electromagnetic radiative corrections to unique first-forbidden nuclear beta decays. We show that the insertion of angular momentum into the nuclear matrix element by the virtual or real photon exchange opens up the decay at vanishing nuclear recoil momentum which was forbidden at tree level, leading to a dramatic change in the decay spectrum not anticipated in existing studies. We discuss its implications for precision tests on the standard model and searches for new physics.

Magneto-opto-phononic inverse Faraday effect

Nonlinear frequency conversion processes, such as optical rectification, difference-frequency generation, and sum-frequency generation, are fundamental for producing electromagnetic radiation at diverse frequencies. In this work, we demonstrate that coherently excited infrared-active phonons can act as transducers for generating nonlinear magnetizations through phonon-magnon interactions, analogous to nonlinear optical frequency conversion. We derive analytical solutions for the time-dependent magnetizations arising from the second-order response to the electric field component of an ultrashort laser pulse. These solutions enable us to define second-order nonlinear magneto-electric susceptibilities, which describe rectification, impulsive excitation, and sum-frequency excitation of coherent magnons. Our theoretical framework naturally incorporates the conventional magneto-optic and phonon inverse Faraday effects and predicts a hybrid magneto-opto-phononic inverse Faraday effect involving photon-phonon-magnon scattering. This work highlights nonlinear phononics as a pathway for controlling magnetization in solids.

Interpreting Mass and Radius Measurements of Neutron Stars with Dark Matter Halos

Abstract The high densities of neutron stars (NSs) could provide astrophysical locations for dark matter (DM) to accumulate. Depending on the DM model, these DM admixed NSs (DANSs) could have significantly different properties than pure baryonic NSs, accessible through X-ray observations of rotation-powered pulsars. We adopt the two-fluid formalism in general relativity to numerically simulate stable configurations of DANSs, assuming a fermionic equation of state (EOS) for the DM with repulsive self-interaction. The distribution of DM in the DANS as a halo affects the path of X-rays emitted from hot spots on the visible baryonic surface, causing notable changes in the pulse profile observed by telescopes such as NICER, compared to pure baryonic NSs. We explore how various DM models affect the DM mass distribution, leading to different types of dark halos. We quantify the deviation in observed X-ray flux from stars with each of these halos. We identify the pitfalls in interpreting mass and radius measurements of NSs inferred from electromagnetic radiation and constraining the baryonic matter EOS if these dark halos exist.

VERITAS and Multiwavelength Observations of the Blazar B3 2247+381 in Response to an IceCube Neutrino Alert

While the sources of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux detected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory are still largely unknown, one of the promising methods to improve our understanding of them is investigating the potential temporal and spatial correlations between neutrino alerts and the electromagnetic radiation from blazars. We report on the multiwavelength target-of-opportunity observations of the blazar B3 2247+381, taken in response to an IceCube multiplet alert for a cluster of muon neutrino events compatible with the source location between 2022 May 20 and 2022 November 10. B3 2247+381 was not detected with VERITAS during this time period. The source was found to be in a low-flux state in the optical, ultraviolet, and gamma-ray bands for the time interval corresponding to the neutrino event, but was detected in the hard X-ray band with NuSTAR during this period. We find the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution is described well using a simple one-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton radiation model. Moreover, assuming the neutrinos originate from hadronic processes within the jet, the neutrino flux would be accompanied by a photon flux from the cascade emission, and the integrated photon flux required in such a case would significantly exceed the total multiwavelength fluxes and the VERITAS upper limits presented here. The lack of flaring activity observed with VERITAS, combined with the low multiwavelength flux levels, as well as the significance of the neutrino excess being at a 3σ level (uncorrected for trials), makes B3 2247+381 an unlikely source of the IceCube multiplet. We conclude that the neutrino excess is likely a background fluctuation.

Predictions for a Low-mass Cutoff for the Primordial Black Hole Mass Spectrum

In this note, we outline how a modest violation in the conservation of mass during the merger of two PBHs affects the PBH mass spectrum that we previously obtained using a Boltzmann equation model for the evolution of the mass spectrum with no mass loss. We find that if the initial cosmological redshift is of the order of 10 12 , then the fraction of primordial holes with masses greater than 10 3 solar masses appears to be close to what is required to provide the seeds for galaxies. In addition, we note that as a result of rapid collisions and strong coupling to electromagnetic radiation for temperatures > GeV, there will be an effective low-mass cutoff in the mass spectrum for PBH masses less than a certain PBH mass less than 0.1M ⊙ . We also point out that this cutoff in the mass spectrum below ~ 0.1M ⊙ can be confirmed by combining future microlensing observations from the Roman Space Telescope and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory with astrometric observations.

High-voltage pulse generator developed for wide-gap spark chambers

Low-inductance, high-capacitance Marx pulse generator provides for minimization of internal inductance and suppression of external electromagnetic radiation. The spark gaps of the generator are enclosed in a pressurized nitrogen atmosphere which allows the charging voltage to be varied by changing the nitrogen pressure.
