Electronic structural and lattice thermodynamic properties of MAlO2 and M5AlO4 (M = Li, Na, K) sorbents for CO2 capture applications

Abstract The electronic properties and thermal stabilities of MAlO 2 and M 5 AlO 4 (M = Li, Na, K) are investigated by density functional theory and lattice phonon dynamics. Based on the calculated electronic and lattice thermodynamic properties, their abilities to capture CO 2 as solid sorbents are analyzed. The calculated electronic structural properties of MAlO 2 and M 5 AlO 4 indicate that all these alkali aluminates are semiconductors with a bandgap range of 2.4 ~ 6.4 eV. The 1st valence bands of these alkali aluminates are located 0 ~ − 6 eV under Fermi levels and are mainly contributed by p orbitals of O, s and p orbitals of Al and M. The phonon vibrational frequencies of M 5 AlO 4 spread at a lower frequency range compared to their MAlO 2 phases. With increasing temperature, the calculated phonon free energies of M 5 AlO 4 decrease faster than their corresponding MAlO 2 while their entropies have opposite trends. The reaction 2MAlO 2 + CO 2 = M 2 CO 3 + Al 2 O 3 has higher reaction heat and Gibbs free energy change than those of corresponding reaction 2 / 5 M 5 AlO 4 + CO 2 = M 2 CO 3 + 1 / 5 Al 2 O 3 , which shows the former reaction possesses lower turnover temperature. Among the alkali aluminates studied, the β-NaAlO 2 , lt-KAlO 2 , and γ-LiAlO 2 are better candidates that could be applied for CO 2 capture technologies. Graphical Abstract

Electronic structure of Alq 3 and Liq using soft X-ray spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation

We show the electronic structure of aluminum tris-8-hydroxyquinoline (Alq 3 ) and 8-hydroquinolatolithium (Liq) was investigated using a combination of X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and spectral simulation with density functional theory. The chemical bonding states of Alq 3 and Liq were analyzed using XPS core-level spectra. The band gaps of Alq 3 and Liq were measured by combining the XAS and XES results. Additionally, resonant and non-resonant XES were used to measure the density of states for O sites in the molecules.

Electronic Structure Theory Calculations Using Modern Architectures: KNL vs Haswell

The time to solution and parallel efficiency of several commonly used electronic structure methods (Hartree–Fock, density functional theory, second order perturbation theory, resolution of the identity second order perturbation theory, coupled cluster) are evaluated on both the Intel Xeon Haswell and the Intel Xeon Phi Knights Landing (KNL) architectures. The Haswell completes the benchmark calculations with a faster time to solution than the KNL for all molecules and methods tested. While the Haswell exhibits an average speedup of at least 3.5 relative to the KNL for all nonthreaded computations, the KNL has a better parallel efficiency than the Haswell with increasing core counts. The architectures are further tested using a more computationally costly coupled cluster method on a transition state reaction. The Haswell appears to be the best choice to minimize the time to solution, though for very large systems and high levels of theory that require memory intensive processes the superior memory hierarchy and larger on node memory of the KNL can make it a better choice. These results are used to showcase aspects of novel architectures that will increase efficiency for quantum chemistry applications.

Electronic Structure of Metallophthalocyanines, MPc (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mg) and Fluorinated MPc

In this work, we compute the electronic structure and optical excitation energies of metal-free and transition-metal phthalocyanines (H2Pc and MPc for M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mg) using density functional theory with optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functionals (OT-RSH). We show that the OT-RSH approach provides photoemission spectra in quantitative agreement with experiments as well as optical band gaps within 10% of their experimental values, capturing the interplay of localized d-states and delocalized pi-pi* states for these organometallic compounds. We examine the tunability of MPcs and H 2 Pc through fluorination, resulting in quasi-rigid shifts of the molecular orbital energies by up to 0.7 eV. Our comprehensive data set provides a new computational benchmark for gas-phase phthalocyanines, significantly improving upon other density-functional-theory-based approaches.

Electronic Structure Progression across the ACu 2 Q 2 (MQ 2 ) n Semiconductor Series

Moving beyond the engineering of known materials and elemental substitution within common structure types is critical for designing unique properties. Here, we present a new homologous series, ACu 2 Q 2 (MQ 2 ) n (A = Sr, Ba, 2Na; MQ 2 = ZrS2, HfSe 2 ), establishing 11 new members. In β-BaCu 2 Q 2 and Na 2 Cu 2 Se 2 (n = 0), the [Cu 2 Q 2 ] 2– motifs extend in two dimensions, whereas those in α-BaCu 2 Q 2 extend in three dimensions. Hence, there are two structural evolutions within the ACu 2 Q 2 (MQ 2 )n family driven by the polymorphism of the host structures. MQ 2 (n → ∞) displays 2D layers of edge-sharing [MQ 6 ] 8– octahedra that are 1-octahedron-thick and connected via van der Waals bonding. Each insertion of MQ 2 into ACu 2 Q 2 incorporates [MQ 6 ] 8– octahedra extending infinitely in one direction, confined to being 1-octahedron-thick in the second direction, with n controlling the number of [MQ 6 ] 8– octahedra in the third direction. Therefore, increasing n predictively expands the [Cu 2 MnQ 2n+2 ] 2– network in the direction controlled by n and relative to the A + /A 2+ ions. We demonstrate that for a given set of elements, one can enforce a “Host(Insertion)n” formula to systematically evolve both crystal and electronic structures from the host (n = 0) to the insertion (n → ∞) materials through intermediate values of n. Specifically, the energetic misalignment of the electronic band extrema of the parents predictively determines the band extrema and the resulting band gaps of all intermediate n members.

Critical Assessment of Electronic Structure Descriptors for Predicting Perovskite Catalytic Properties

The discovery and design of materials which can efficiently catalyze the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions at reduced temperatures is important for facilitating the widespread adoption of fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies. Numerous studies have produced correlations between catalytic properties, such as oxygen surface exchange or electrode area specific resistance (ASR), and properties of the catalyst material. However, correlations have historically been limited in scope (e.g., using only a few materials or at a single temperature) and it has been difficult to provide detailed assessments of their robustness. Here, in this study, we assess the ability of the O p-band center electronic structure descriptor, obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations, to correlate with oxygen surface exchange rates, diffusivities, and area specific resistances for a large database of perovskite oxide catalytic properties. By data mining the literature, we obtain 747 catalytic property value data points spanning 299 unique perovskite compositions from 313 studies. We assess linear correlations of each property with the O p-band center and find generally modest correlations that are qualitatively useful (prediction mean absolute errors of about 0.5 log units are typical), where the correlations are improved at higher temperatures (e.g., 800 °C vs. 500 °C) and significantly improve when considering fits to the subset of materials which have multiple independent measurements. These findings suggest that the spread of property data is significantly influenced by experimental uncertainty, and subsequent measurements of additional materials will likely improve the O p-band center correlations.

Electronic structure of the parent compound of superconducting infinite-layer nickelates

The search continues for nickel oxide-based materials with electronic properties similar to cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The recent discovery of superconductivity in the doped infinite-layer nickelate NdNiO 2 has strengthened these efforts. In this work, we use X-ray spectroscopy and density functional theory to show that the electronic structure of LaNiO 2 and NdNiO 2 , while similar to the cuprates, includes significant distinctions. Unlike cuprates, the rare-earth spacer layer in the infinite-layer nickelate supports a weakly interacting three-dimensional 5d metallic state, which hybridizes with a quasi-two-dimensional, strongly correlated state with $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry in the NiO 2 layers. Thus, the infinite-layer nickelate can be regarded as a sibling of the rare-earth intermetallics which are well known for heavy fermion behaviour, where the NiO 2 correlated layers play an analogous role to the 4f states in rare-earth heavy fermion compounds. This Kondo- or Anderson-lattice-like ‘oxide-intermetallic’ replaces the Mott insulator as the reference state from which superconductivity emerges upon doping.

Electronic structure of LaNiO 2 and CaCuO 2 from a self-consistent vertex-corrected GW approach

In this work, the electronic structure of one of the nickelates (LaNiO 2 ) and one of the cuprates (CaCuO 2 ) is studied with three self-consistent GW-based methods: scGW, sc(GW+vertex), and quasiparticle self-consistent GW. Low-energy features obtained in our study are in many respects similar to the features reported in previous density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) studies. Consistent with the DFT+DMFT conclusion, we find LaNiO 2 to be more correlated than CaCuO 2 . However, correlation effects included in our study change the DFT Fermi surface near the Γ point differently from that reported in DMFT studies. Features that are a few electronvolts away from the Fermi level are broader in our calculations than in the DFT+DMFT, which reflects the differences between the DFT and the GW methods. Our results are in qualitative agreement with previous G0W0 results, but the self-consistency results in quantitative differences. Generally, correlation effects are found to be sufficiently weak in both materials, which allows one to use totally ab initio diagrammatic approaches such as sc(GW+Vertex) and to avoid the methods with adjustable parameters (DFT+U or DFT+DMFT). However, the possibility of some strong correlations at low energy that cannot be captured by perturbative methods cannot be completely excluded. For instance, differences in the Fermi surface should be resolved, thus experimental studies are necessary.

Nano-photocurrent Mapping of Local Electronic Structure in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

In this work, we report a combined nano-photocurrent and infrared nanoscopy study of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) enabling access to the local electronic phenomena at length scales as short as 20 nm. We show that the photocurrent changes sign at carrier densities tracking the local superlattice density of states of TBG. We use this property to identify domains of varying local twist angle by local photothermoelectric effect. Consistent with the photocurrent study, infrared nanoimaging experiments reveal optical conductivity features dominated by twist-angle-dependent interband transitions. Our results provide a fast and robust method for mapping the electronic structure of TBG and suggest that similar methods can be broadly applied to probe electronic inhomogeneities of Moiré superlattices in other van der Waals heterostructures.

Electronic structure of strongly correlated systems: recent developments in multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory and multiconfiguration nonclassical-energy functional theory

Strong electron correlation plays an important role in transition-metal and heavy-metal chemistry, magnetic molecules, bond breaking, biradicals, excited states, and many functional materials, but it provides a significant challenge for modern electronic structure theory. The treatment of strongly correlated systems usually requires a multireference method to adequately describe spin densities and near-degeneracy correlation. However, quantitative computation of dynamic correlation with multireference wave functions is often difficult or impractical. Multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MC-PDFT) provides a way to blend multiconfiguration wave function theory and density functional theory to quantitatively treat both near-degeneracy correlation and dynamic correlation in strongly correlated systems; it is more affordable than multireference perturbation theory, multireference configuration interaction, or multireference coupled cluster theory and more accurate for many properties than Kohn–Sham density functional theory. This perspective article provides a brief introduction to strongly correlated systems and previously reviewed progress on MC-PDFT followed by a discussion of several recent developments and applications of MC-PDFT and related methods, including localized-active-space MC-PDFT, generalized active-space MC-PDFT, density-matrix-renormalization-group MC-PDFT, hybrid MC-PDFT, multistate MC-PDFT, spin–orbit coupling, analytic gradients, and dipole moments. We also review the more recently introduced multiconfiguration nonclassical-energy functional theory (MC-NEFT), which is like MC-PDFT but allows for other ingredients in the nonclassical-energy functional. We discuss two new kinds of MC-NEFT methods, namely multiconfiguration density coherence functional theory and machine-learned functionals.

Radiative capture rates at deep defects from electronic structure calculations

We present a methodology to calculate radiative carrier capture coefficients at deep defects in semiconductors and insulators from first principles. Electronic structure and lattice relaxations are accurately described with hybrid density functional theory. Calculations of capture coefficients provide an additional validation of the accuracy of these functionals in dealing with localized defect states. We also discuss the validity of the Condon approximation, showing that even in the event of large lattice relaxations the approximation is accurate. We test the method on GaAs:VGa-TeAs and GaN:CN, for which reliable experiments are available, and demonstrate very good agreement with measured capture coefficients.

Bimolecular Reductive Elimination of Ethane from Pyridine(diimine) Iron Methyl Complexes: Mechanism, Electronic Structure, and Entry into [2+2] Cycloaddition Catalysis

The application of bimolecular reductive elimination to the activation of iron catalysts for alkene–diene cycloaddition is described. Key to this approach was the synthesis, characterization, electronic structure determination, and ultimately solution stability of a family of pyridine(diimine) iron methyl complexes with diverse steric properties and electronic ground states. Both the aryl-substituted, ( Me PDI)FeCH 3 and ( Et PDI)FeCH 3 ( R PDI = 2,6-(2,6-R 2 -C 6 H 3 N=CMe) 2 C 5 H 3 N), and the alkyl-substituted examples, ( Cy APDI)FeCH 3 ( Cy APDI = 2,6-(C 6 H 11 N=CMe) 2 C 5 H 3 N), have molecular structures significantly distorted from planarity and S = 3/2 ground states. The related N-arylated derivative bearing 2,6-di-isopropyl aryl substituents, ( iPr PDI)FeCH 3 , has an idealized planar geometry and exhibits spin crossover behavior from S = 1/2 to S = 3/2 states. At 23 °C under an N 2 atmosphere, both ( Me PDI)FeCH 3 and ( Et PDI)FeCH 3 underwent reductive elimination of ethane to form the iron dinitrogen precatalysts, [( Me PDI)Fe(N 2 )] 2 (μ-N 2 ) and [( Et PDI)Fe(N 2 )] 2 (μ-N 2 ), respectively, while ( iPr PDI)FeCH 3 proved inert to C–C bond formation. By contrast, addition of butadiene to all three iron methyl complexes induced ethane formation and generated the corresponding iron butadiene complexes, ( R PDI)Fe(η 4 -C 4 H 6 ) (R = Me, Et, i Pr), known precatalysts for the [2+2] cycloaddition of olefins and dienes. Kinetic, crossover experiments, and structural studies were combined with magnetic measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy to elucidate the electronic and steric features of the iron complexes that enable this unusual reductive elimination and precatalyst activation pathway. Furthermore, transmetalation of methyl groups between iron centers was fast at ambient temperature and independent of steric environment or spin state, while the intermediate dimer underwent the sterically controlled rate-determining reaction with either N 2 or butadiene to access a catalytically active iron compound.

Low-energy electronic structure in the unconventional charge-ordered state of ScV6Sn6

Abstract Kagome vanadates A V 3 Sb 5 display unusual low-temperature electronic properties including charge density waves (CDW), whose microscopic origin remains unsettled. Recently, CDW order has been discovered in a new material ScV 6 Sn 6 , providing an opportunity to explore whether the onset of CDW leads to unusual electronic properties. Here, we study this question using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The ARPES measurements show minimal changes to the electronic structure after the onset of CDW. However, STM quasiparticle interference (QPI) measurements show strong dispersing features related to the CDW ordering vectors. A plausible explanation is the presence of a strong momentum-dependent scattering potential peaked at the CDW wavevector, associated with the existence of competing CDW instabilities. Our STM results further indicate that the bands most affected by the CDW are near vHS, analogous to the case of A V 3 Sb 5 despite very different CDW wavevectors.

Experimental confirmation of the magnetic ordering transition induced by an electronic structure change in the metallic triangular antiferromagnet Co 1/3⁢ TaS 2

We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies combined with DFT+DMFT calculations to confirm that the magnetic ordering vector transition from Q=(1/2,0,0) to Q=(1/3,0,0) in the metallic triangular antiferromagnets Co 1/3±𝜀⁢ TaS 2 (𝜀 ≈ 0.007) is induced by the electronic structure change in the system. The ARPES-measured Fermi surface (FS) maps of Co 0.325 ⁢TaS 2 show two hexagonal and one circular holelike FSs around Γ, which matches well with the triple- Q state by taking into account the contribution of nesting vectors occurring between Co 3⁢𝑑 and Ta 5⁢𝑑 orbitals. In the case of Co 0.340 ⁢TaS 2 , a new electron pocket around K appears, and the FS geometry changes as a result of the correlation effect of Co 4 ⁢S 18 tripods forming in the system. The magnetic susceptibility calculations based on the charge-self-consistent DFT+DMFT band structures and the random phase approximation indicate that the most stable magnetic ordering vector (1/2,0,0) split into (1/6,0,0) and (1/2,0,0), which is consistent with the magnetic phase transition around 𝑥=1/3 in Co 𝑥 ⁢TaS 2 .

Exploring the Origins of Anti-Ambipolarity in BBL Polymer: Links to Redox Chemistry, Electronic Structure, and Structural Dynamics

We examine the intrinsic physical-chemical properties of the conjugated ladder-type polymer poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) in response to electron transfer. We aim at explaining the origin of the anti-ambipolar behavior behind the observed BBL nonlinear response associated with specific device architectures. To elucidate this point, we use theory and computation based on first principles, including density functional theory optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, time-dependent DFT, and Marcus-theory analysis. Our results reveal that this redox response is not simply monotonic but follows an alternating odd/even pattern in which gap narrowing and reopening occur sequentially before near-gapless behavior emerges at high charging. Converging theoretical evidence in this work demonstrates that bell shaped conductivity in BBL originates in its fundamental electronic structure and supramolecular organization.

Probing the electronic structure and spectroscopy of pyrrolyl and imidazolyl radicals using high-resolution photoelectron imaging of cryogenically cooled anions

High-resolution photoelectron imaging and photodetachment spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled pyrrolide and imidazolide anions are used to probe the electronic structure and spectroscopy of pyrrolyl and imidazolyl radicals. The high-resolution data allow the ground state vibronic structures of the two radicals to be completely resolved, yielding accurate electron affinities of 2.1433 ± 0.0008 eV and 2.6046 ± 0.0006 eV for pyrrolyl and imidazolyl radicals, respectively. Fundamental frequencies for eight vibrational modes of pyrrolyl and ten vibrational modes of imidazolyl are measured, including several nonsymmetric Franck–Condon-forbidden modes. Two electronic excited states are also observed for the two radicals, displaying diffuse spectral features in both systems. The observations of nonsymmetric vibrational modes in the ground states and the diffuse excited state features provide strong evidence for vibronic couplings between the ground state and the two close-by excited states. The 2-pyrrolide isomer is also observed as a minor species from the electrospray ionization source and the electron affinity of 2-pyrrolyl is measured to be 1.6690 ± 0.0030 eV along with five vibrational frequencies. Even though the HOMOs of both pyrrolide and imidazolide anions are p orbitals, photodetachment spectroscopy reveals completely different threshold behaviors for the two anions: a d-wave-dominated spectrum for pyrrolide and an s-wave-dominated spectrum for imidazolide. Furthermore, the current study provides a wealth of electronic and spectroscopic information, which is ideal to compare with more accurate vibronic coupling calculations for these two important radicals, as well as interesting information about the photodetachment dynamics of the two anions.
