Integrating Energy Efficiency Strategies with Industrialized Construction for Our Clean Energy Future: Preprint

NREL’s Industrialized Construction Innovation Team has developed an ambitious plan to accelerate the integration of energy efficiency (EE) strategies with Industrialized Construction (IC). The United States (U.S.) construction industry is beginning to use IC methods to build multifamily apartment buildings to address affordability and labor shortages. Apart from reducing cost of construction and delivery times, the IC method of permanent modular construction has the potential to facilitate the integration of a wide range of EE strategies and advanced controls into such buildings. While there may be unintended EE benefits to IC such as a tighter envelope due to higher construction quality, the process has not been leveraged specifically to enhance EE. NREL aims to claim this missed opportunity and integrate IC benefits with EE as well as advanced controls, distributed energy resources, and grid-friendly design strategies. The paper proposes an ‘IC Assessment Framework’ to achieve affordable zero-energy modular multifamily buildings. Through the selection criteria of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly, the framework aims to distill a broad range of proven EE strategies for site-built into a set of strategies that qualify as easy to integrate for off-site. The output is a Factory Information Model (FIM) that represents a process-based digital twin to enable advanced time-and-motion study, plugs into open source building energy modeling platform (EnergyPlus), and serves as a vital tool facilitating wider adoption of EE integration. Conclusively, the paper delineates next steps for upcoming pilots with NREL’s IC partners towards developing a transformational pathway for our Clean Energy Future.

From TPL assessment to design optimization: Wave energy converter control co-design applied to the RM3

The Reference Model (RM) project developed six marine energy converter concepts using a sequential design methodology, which, while widely adopted in the industry, often overlooks interactions between system components, resulting in suboptimal designs. One such example is the Reference Model 3 (RM3), a two-body point absorber wave energy converter (WEC). An assessment using the Technology Performance Level (TPL) revealed that RM3’s low power-to-cost ratio, partly due to expensive steel construction, limits its techno-economic performance. Here, this study aims to redesign RM3 by reducing its scale and employing control co-design to integrate WEC and Power Take-Off (PTO) dynamics, constraints, and cost considerations within an optimization framework. We demonstrate the limitations of RM3’s current PTO design and explore the benefits of scaling down to enhance techno-economic viability by lowering material costs. Using WecOptTool, we conduct a parameter sweep over gear ratios and spring stiffnesses for various Commercial Off-The-Shelf generators in irregular wave conditions. Our findings emphasize the importance of aligning PTO components with WEC dynamics, showing that control co-design and strategic scaling can improve RM3’s power-to-cost ratio. This study presents a transferable example of applied control co-design for other WECs, supporting early-stage developers in their design decisions.

Multifaceted drivers for onshore wind energy repowering and their implications for energy transition

Wind energy is anticipated to become a backbone of the future energy system. Ageing wind turbine fleets, increasing land-use constraints and rising relevance of societal factors make the deployment of land-based (onshore) wind energy ever more complicated. Consequently, repowering is expected to become a rapidly growing point of focus for the wind industry. Here we propose a more holistic and socially informed project-level approach to analyse repowering activity that enables a more robust understanding of the process and potentials. We demonstrate that for wind pioneer in Denmark, only 67% of the capacity removed in repowering projects was related to the physical space needed for a new turbine. Other factors that drive repowering include regulation (for example, noise-related, 8–17%), development principles (for example, aesthetics, 7–20%) and political bargaining (4–13%). The recognition of repowering as a negotiated process between host communities and wind developers will probably be critical to unlock the full potential of wind energy in the future.

Energy Spectrum of Ultrahigh-Energy Cosmic Rays across Declinations -90° to +44.8° as Measured at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The energy spectrum of cosmic rays above 2.5 EeV has been measured across the declination range - 9 0 ° ≤ δ ≤ + 44.8 ° using ∼ 310 000 events accrued at the Pierre Auger Observatory from an exposure of ( 104 900 ± 3 100 ) km 2 sr yr . No significant variations of energy spectra with declination are observed, after allowing or not for nonuniformities across the sky arising from the well-established dipolar anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. Here, the instep feature in the spectrum at ≃ 10 EeV reported previously is now established at a significance above 5 σ . Within the statistics, the energy spectra are indistinguishable across declinations so disfavoring an origin for the instep from a few distinctive sources.

Cost Reduction of School Bus Fleet Electrification With Optimized Charging and Distributed Energy Resources: Preprint

Considerations for electrifying school buses are presented with an analysis of battery sizing to match bus driving requirements. The charging and vehicle-to-building dispatch of the electric school buses were optimized to evaluate the potential to reduce the impact of the bus charging on the school's electric utility bill. Distributed energy resources (DER) and flexible building loads were also considered with the school bus electrification to evaluate the further reduction in energy costs with enhanced system integration and optimized dispatch. The effect of degradation on the school bus batteries was analyzed to determine if the smart charging and vehicle-to-building battery operation decreases the life of the battery. The results show that there is an opportunity to mitigate the increase of electric utility bills with improved charging controls and bi-directionally operating the school bus batteries to reduce building demand charges. The battery degradation analysis using dispatch with optimized charging and discharging shows acceptable battery life.

Umbilical Fatigue Analysis for a Wave Energy Converter

Unique umbilical designs for wave energy converters (WECs), including the ability to handle significantly larger motions and loads over long deployments, are often required when conventional marine umbilical designs for offshore oil and gas and offshore wind may not meet the design and cost needs of wave energy technologies. This study details a fatigue analysis of a dynamic power umbilical attached to a two-body floating point absorber WEC system, using the sea states provided for the PacWave testing facilities. The 6 degrees of freedom motion time history for the WEC was simulated, and the motions of the attachment point for the umbilical on the WEC and respective sea states were used to analyze the dynamic motions and fatigue of the connected power umbilical to predict the fatigue life. The results show that the fatigue damage observed is more significant in shallow water, and extensive fatigue damage may occur because of the larger curvature response of the umbilical. The umbilical configurations departing at 90 deg off incoming waves were found to have the highest fatigue life attributed to less extension or compression of the umbilical. However, additional bend stiffener/limiter features may need to be incorporated into the buoyancy section and touchdown regions to minimize curvature-induced fatigue.

Grand Challenges: wind energy research needs for a global energy transition

Wind energy is anticipated to play a central role in enabling a rapid transition from fossil fuels to a system based largely on renewable power. For wind power to fulfill its expected role as the backbone – providing nearly half of the electrical energy – of a renewable-based, carbon-neutral energy system, critical challenges around design, manufacture, and deployment of land and offshore technologies must be addressed. During the past 3 years, the wind research community has invested significant effort toward understanding the nature and implications of these challenges and identifying associated gaps. The outcomes of these efforts are summarized in a series of 10 articles, some under review by Wind Energy Science (WES) and others planned for submission during the coming months. This letter explains the genesis, significance, and impacts of these efforts.

Transforming Energy through Computational Science: Computing for Clean Energy

This fact sheet discusses the opportunity space for NREL's computational science capabilities to address national clean energy objectives. Achieving a carbon-free power sector by 2035 as a step towards a decarbonized U.S. energy economy in 2050 will require major advances in power generation, autonomous energy systems, transportation, and buildings/communities. Development of integrated modeling approaches for complex energy systems will be essential for deployment. Success requires developments in optimization and control theory, complemented by machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), all of which in turn need targeted investments in breadth and scale of computing. This document defines an opportunity space where: embracing computing can link established research and development (R&D) to a decarbonization agenda; pursuing emerging approaches can accelerate the pace of technology advancement across the portfolio; and leading by example could reduce the carbon footprint of computing worldwide.

Measuring Relative Energies of Ligand Binding Conformations on Nanocluster Surfaces with Temperature-Dependent FTIR Spectroscopy

We present a method to measure relative energies between binding conformations of carboxylate ligands on InP magic-sized clusters in solution. Using Markov chain Monte Carlo global fitting analysis on temperature-dependent vibrational spectra of cluster-bound ligands, we observe significantly different relative energies between various bidentate and monodentate binding motifs. Relative to the monodentate motif, the chelating conformation is 0.7 ± 0.3 kcal/mol more stable and the syn–syn bridging conformation is 1.1 ± 0.5 kcal/mol more stable, but the syn–anti bridging conformation exhibits no significant difference. Our results demonstrate that the relative energy between monodentate-bound carboxylates and unbound carboxylic acids is 4.52 ± 0.05 kcal/mol, or 1582 ± 19 cm –1 , nearly identical to the carboxylate asymmetric stretching frequency. Here, we suggest that the ligand vibrational energy may play a key role in ligand dissociation by compensating for energy differences between bound and dissociated ligand states. This approach gives important experimental insights into ligand binding and can inform future nanocrystal surface engineering.

Intrinsic Layer-Dependent Surface Energy and Exfoliation Energy of van der Waals Materials

Stacking and twisting 2D van der Waals (vdW) layers have become versatile platforms to tune the electron correlation. These platforms rely on exfoliating vdW materials down to a single vdW layer and a few vdW layers. We calculate the intrinsic layer-dependent surface and exfoliation energies of typical vdW materials such as graphite, h-BN, black P, MX 2 (M = Mo or W; X = S, Se, or Te), MX (M = Ga or In; X = S, Se, or Te), Bi 2 Te 3 , and MnBi 2 Te 4 using density functional theory. For exchange-correlation functionals with explicit vdW interaction, a single vdW layer always has the smallest surface energy, giving a surface energy reduction when compared to that of thicker vdW layers. Furthermore, the magnitude of this surface energy reduction quickly decreases with an increase in the number of atomic layers inside the single vdW layer for different vdW materials. Such atomic-layer dependence in surface energy reduction helps explain the different effectiveness of exfoliation for different vdW materials down to a single vdW layer.
