Vacuum Pyrolysis of Hybrid Poplar Milled Wood Lignin with Fourier Transform-Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry Analysis of Feedstock and Products for the Elucidation of Reaction Mechanisms

The pyrolysis of lignocellulosic materials is a promising technique to produce fuels and chemicals. It is well known that the most abundant products of lignin pyrolysis are oligomeric molecules, known as pyrolytic lignin (PL). The chemical composition of PL has been extensively studied; however, there is still an important debate whether these oligomers are produced directly from the lignin or from the recombination of monomeric pyrolytic products. Existing theories are unable to describe the effect of vacuum on the distribution of pyrolysis products. Hybrid poplar milled wood lignin (MWL) was initially isolated and thoroughly characterized by Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Chemical formulas were assigned to each oligomeric compound detected. The MWL was also subjected to vacuum pyrolysis in a modified pyroprobe at 250, 750, and 1000 mbar (absolute pressure), and the resulting liquid products were analyzed by FT-ICR MS. A new strategy to assign structural representations to the oligomeric PL products is proposed, based on the plausible pyrolysis reaction mechanisms of depolymerization/fragmentation applied to original MWL oligomer formulas. Our results support the hypothesis that PL is formed from the removal of moieties from primary lignin pyrolysis products with between three and five aromatic rings. This depolymerization/fragmentation allows the oligomers to reduce their molecular weights to the point where they can be removed from the reaction zone by direct vaporization. Furthermore, this phenomenon highlights the importance of pressure on removal mechanisms and their impact on the molecular weight of the resulting products from lignin pyrolysis.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Water Oxidation Activity of Isomeric Ru Complexes

The synthesis and characterization of the isomeric ruthenium complexes with the general formula cis- and trans-[Ru(trpy)(qc)X] n+ (trpy is 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, qc is 8-quinolinecarboxylate, cis-1 and trans-1, X = Cl, n = 0; cis-2 and trans-2, X=OH2, n = 1) with respect to the relative disposition of the carboxylate and X ligands are reported. For comparison purposes, another set of ruthenium complexes with general formula cis- and trans-[Ru(trpy)(pic)(OH 2 )]+ (pic is 2-picolinate (cis-3, trans-3)) have been prepared. The complexes with a qc ligand show a more distorted geometry compared to the complexes with a pic ligand. In all of the cases, the trans isomers show lower potential values for all of the redox couples relative to the cis isomers. Furthermore, complexes cis-2 and trans-2 with six-member chelate rings show higher catalytic activity than cis-3 and trans-3. Overall, it was shown that the electronic perturbation to the metal center exerted by different orientation and geometry of the ligands significantly influences both redox properties and catalytic performance.

Dimensional Interpolation for Random Walk

In this work, we employ a simple and accurate dimensional interpolation formula for the shapes of random walks at D = 3 and D = 2 based on the analytically known solutions at both limits D = ∞ and D = 1. The results obtained for the radius of gyration of an arbitrary shaped object have about 2% error compared with accurate numerical results at D = 3 and D = 2. We also calculated the asphericity for a three-dimensional random walk using the dimensional interpolation formula. The results agree very well with the numerically simulated results. The method is general and can be used to estimate other properties of random walks.

Intervening Oxygen Enabled Magnetic Moment Modulation in Spinel Nanostructures

Oxygen vacancies and lattice oxygen on the surface of nanoparticles play crucial roles in the magnetism of transition metal oxides. A fundamental understanding of the interactions between the 2p orbitals of oxygen anions and the 3d orbitals of metal cations is of immense interest for applications due to specific electronic, magnetic, and chemical properties. The spinel nanostructures Co 3 O 4 ,Fe 3 O 4 , and CoFe 2 O 4 present a unique model to alter coordination and bonding due to d electrons and oxygen 2p states. We performed complementary experimental techniques and corresponding model calculations to show that the overall net magnetism differs significantly between the O 2 -rich and -deficient environments. It was found that in monometallic spinel oxides (e.g., Co 3 O 4 and Fe 3 O 4 ), the changes in the spin moment are relatively small (~0.08μ B per formula unit) compared to those in the bimetallic spinel oxide CoFe 2 O 4 (~0.40 μ B per formula unit). Finally, our study illustrates that the O 2 -rich/deficient conditions alter the exchange of O h sites and adjust the metal ion moments so as to impact the overall magnetism.

Extreme Molecular Complexity Resulting in a Continuum of Carbonaceous Species in Biomass Burning Tar Balls from Wildfire Smoke

Biomass burning emits a wide range of carbonaceous particles into the atmosphere and has negative impacts on human health and the Earth’s radiative balance. Nonvolatile spherical organic aerosol particles, commonly known as tar balls, represent one of the most abundant particles in aged biomass burning smoke. However, the detailed molecular-level composition of ambient tar balls is largely unknown but critical to access their environmental impacts. Ambient aerosol samples collected during a wildfire event, which were ~90% tar balls by number fraction, were analyzed using ultrahigh resolution Orbitrap Elite mass spectrometry with four complementary ionization modes. Our results show the molecular composition of tar balls to be complex, composed of over 10,000 molecular formulas. Model estimated saturation mass concentrations and relative humidity dependent glass transition temperatures were consistent with low volatility and solid morphology as expected for tar balls. Room-temperature evaporation kinetics showed that these particles were composed of ~90% non-volatile species. The molecular complexity detected here signifies a continuum of carbonaceous species, ranging from C3 to C45 with continuous ranges of oxygenation and hydrogen saturation for each Cn. Approximately 24% of molecular formulas were estimated the be highly aromatic, which could indicate chemical compounds with negative health effects, and which may contribute to visible light absorption. The carbon continuum observed here has significant implications for the molecular characterization of atmospheric organic matter. The level of complexity detected here should not be ignored in future studies and we demonstrate that multiple analytical methods may be required to suitably interpret this complexity on a molecular level.

Characterization of Sequentially Extracted Soil Organic Matter by Electrospray Ionization and Atmospheric Pressure Photoionization Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry

Soil organic matter (SOM) is a complex mixture of small molecules and biopolymers that are active in various biogeochemical processes. However, the chemical diversity of biopolymer-derived SOM remains poorly explored. Identifying this diversity is important because global environmental changes may well alter SOM chemistry, as field experiments are beginning to show. Here, organic solvent-extractable (DcMe-SOM), base-hydrolyzable (KOH Hy -SOM), and CuO-oxidizable (CuO Ox -SOM) SOM fractions from a forest with a long-term nitrogen addition experiment were sequentially extracted and characterized by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) coupled with negative-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) or atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI). From DcMe-SOM to CuO Ox -SOM, the total number of assigned formulas, average O/C ratio, aromaticity, and unsaturation degree of SOM continuously increased, while the average m/z and H/C ratio decreased. Moreover, the dominant chemical category shifted from lipid-like components to phytochemical- and protein-like components. Complementary to ESI, APPI effectively facilitated detection of additional compounds with low polarity. With long-term nitrogen addition, the average m/z, unsaturation degree, aromaticity, and oxidation state of SOM increased, and more aromatic nitrogen-containing formulas were detected in CuOOx-SOM. Our study demonstrates that chronic nitrogen deposition in forests alters both the small molecules and biopolymers of SOM fundamentally.

Three-Dimensional Lead Iodide Perovskitoid Hybrids with High X-ray Photoresponse

Large organic A cations cannot stabilize the 3D perovskite AMX 3 structure because they cannot be accommodated in the cubo-octhedral cage (do not follow the Goldschmidt tolerance factor rule), and they generally template low-dimensional structures. In this paper, we report that the large dication aminomethylpyridinium (AMPY) can template novel 3D structures which resemble conventional perovskites. They have the formula (xAMPY)M 2 I 6 (x = 3 or 4, M = Sn 2+ or Pb 2+ ) which is double of the AMX3 formula. However, because of the steric requirement of the Goldschmidt tolerance factor rule, it is impossible for (xAMPY)M 2 I 6 to form proper perovskite structures. Instead, a combination of corner-sharing and edge-sharing connectivity is adopted in these compounds leading to the new 3D structures. DFT calculations reveal that the compounds are indirect band gap semiconductors with direct band gaps presenting at slightly higher energies and dispersive electronic bands. The indirect band gaps of the Sn and Pb compounds are ~1.7 and 2.0 eV, respectively, which is slightly higher than the corresponding AMI 3 3D perovskites. The Raman spectra for the compounds are diffuse, with a broad rising central peak at very low frequencies around 0 cm –1 , a feature that is characteristic of dynamical lattices, high anharmonicity, and dissipative vibrations very similar to the 3D AMX 3 perovskites. Devices of (3AMPY)Pb 2 I 6 crystals exhibit clear photoresponse under ambient light without applied bias, reflecting a high carrier mobility (μ) and long carrier lifetime (τ). The devices also exhibit sizable X-ray generated photocurrent with a high μτ product of ~1.2×10 -4 cm 2 /V and a X-ray sensitivity of 207 μC∙Gy -1 ∙cm -2 .

IsoMatchMS : Open-Source Software for Automated Annotation and Visualization of High Resolution MALDI-MS Spectra

Due to its speed, accuracy, and adaptability to various sample types, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) has become a popular method to identify molecular isotope profiles from biological samples. Often MALDI-MS data do not include tandem MS fragmentation data, and thus the identification of compounds in samples requires external databases so that the accurate mass of detected signals can be matched to known molecular compounds. Most relevant MALDI-MS software tools developed to confirm compound identifications are focused on small molecules (e.g., metabolites, lipids) and cannot be easily adapted to protein data due to their more complex isotopic distributions. Here, we present an R package called IsoMatchMS for the automated annotation of MALDI-MS data for multiple datatypes: intact proteins, peptides, and glycans. This tool accepts already derived molecular formulas or, for proteomics applications, can derive molecular formulas from a list of input peptides or proteins including proteins with post-translational modifications. In conclusion, visualization of all matched isotopic profiles is provided in a highly accessible HTML format called a trelliscope display, which allows users to filter and sort by several parameters such as match scores and the number of peaks matched. IsoMatchMS simplifies the annotation and visualization of MALDI-MS data for downstream analyses.

Quantifying the Effect of Magnetic Field Line Curvature Scattering on the Loss of Ring Current Ions

During geomagnetic storms, the ring current ions sometimes exhibit rapid loss as suggested by the fast recovery of the Dst index on a time scale of a few hours. Here, the effects of magnetic field line curvature (FLC) scattering on the loss of ring current ions, which have not been well quantified, are studied here by test particle simulations under the T89c magnetic field model. Our simulation results show that the prediction of ion loss based on a single–value cutoff of the κ parameter or maximum of δμ/μ of a single FLC scattering is not accurate. Instead, the e–folding lifetime (τ) for the loss of ring current ions due to cumulative FLC scattering has been calculated for different initial ion energies, equatorial pitch angles, and L shells under different geomagnetic conditions. The results show that in general the FLC scattering loss is faster for ions of higher energy, higher mass, smaller pitch angle, higher L, and at high Kp level. Specifically, we find that at Kp = 6 the lifetime can be <10 h at L > 5 for 100 s keV protons and at L > 4 for 100 s keV O + , which demonstrates that FLC scattering can be an important mechanism for the observed fast loss (τ < 10 h) of ring current ions during geomagnetic storms. Furthermore, we formulate an empirical formula for τ as a function of ion energy, pitch angle, position, species, and Kp. The empirical formula can be directly included in ring current models to account for the FLC scattering effects.

One-Parameter Analytical Derivation in Modified Budyko Framework for Unsteady-State Streamflow Elasticity in Humid Catchments

The changes in climate and catchment properties have altered the hydrological processes significantly at different spatiotemporal scales around the world. In particular for finer time scales, changes in water storage, which has been commonly neglected for long-term temporal scales, may play an important role on hydrological processes. Nevertheless, few studies addressed this question in modifying the Budyko framework, with most of them remaining a steady-state assumption on catchment characteristics. Here, in this work, we derive new analytical formulas of unsteady-state streamflow elasticity in a modified Budyko framework, incorporating both storage change and one specific parameter for catchment properties. We study 78 humid catchments in the USA with simulation data of daily hydrological processes from a probability-distribution-based hydrological model (the modified HyMOD). As indicated by results, the annual storage change ratio is linearly correlated with the annual aridity index, and this relationship can be used to estimate elasticity coefficients with our formulas. The estimated elasticity coefficients perform well in simulating the annual streamflow with the power-law model. For different catchments, variability of the unsteady-state elasticity is higher than that of the steady-state elasticity. Unsteady-state streamflow coefficients show significant linear correlation with catchment properties, such as the average slope, average elevation, and catchment area. This study provides a new analytical approach to investigate the interannual stability of catchments with varying climate and catchment properties.

Combining data and theory for derivable scientific discovery with AI-Descartes

Abstract Scientists aim to discover meaningful formulae that accurately describe experimental data. Mathematical models of natural phenomena can be manually created from domain knowledge and fitted to data, or, in contrast, created automatically from large datasets with machine-learning algorithms. The problem of incorporating prior knowledge expressed as constraints on the functional form of a learned model has been studied before, while finding models that are consistent with prior knowledge expressed via general logical axioms is an open problem. We develop a method to enable principled derivations of models of natural phenomena from axiomatic knowledge and experimental data by combining logical reasoning with symbolic regression. We demonstrate these concepts for Kepler’s third law of planetary motion, Einstein’s relativistic time-dilation law, and Langmuir’s theory of adsorption. We show we can discover governing laws from few data points when logical reasoning is used to distinguish between candidate formulae having similar error on the data.

Dataset of theoretical multinary perovskite oxides

Perovskite oxides (ternary chemical formula ABO 3 ) are a diverse class of materials with applications including heterogeneous catalysis, solid-oxide fuel cells, thermochemical conversion, and oxygen transport membranes. However, their multicomponent (chemical formula $A_xA^{'}_{1-x}B_yB^{'}_{1-y}O_3$) chemical space is underexplored due to the immense number of possible compositions. To expand the number of computed $A_xA^{'}_{1-x}B_yB^{'}_{1-y}O_3$ compounds we report a dataset of 66,516 theoretical multinary oxides, 59,708 of which are perovskites. First, 69,407 $A_{0.5}A^{'}_{0.5}B_{0.5}B^{'}_{0.5}O_3$ compositions were generated in the a - b + a - Glazer tilting mode using the computationally-inexpensive Structure Prediction and Diagnostic Software (SPuDS) program. Next, we optimized these structures with density functional theory (DFT) using parameters compatible with the Materials Project (MP) database. Our dataset contains these optimized structures and their formation (ΔH f ) and decomposition enthalpies (ΔH d ) computed relative to MP tabulated elemental references and competing phases, respectively. This dataset can be mined, used to train machine learning models, and rapidly and systematically expanded by optimizing more SPuDS-generated $A_{0.5}A^{'}_{0.5}B_{0.5}B^{'}_{0.5}O_3$ perovskite structures using MP-compatible DFT calculations.

Dimensional reduction upon calcium incorporation in Cs 0.3 (Ca 0.3 Ln 0.7 )PS 4 and Cs 0.5 (Ca 0.5 Ln 0.5 )PS 4

A series of Ca-containing lanthanide thiophosphates has been obtained and their structural evolution from 3D for LnPS 4 and Cs 0.3 (Ln 0.7 Ca 0.3 )PS 4 to 2D in Cs 0.5 (Ln 0.5 Ca 0.5 )PS 4 was shown as a function of Ca content. The first series with an idealized formula of Cs 0.3 (Ca 0.3 Ln 0.7 )PS 4 crystallizes in the R3¯m with combining macron]m space group and belongs to a new structure type that consists of a channel containing [(Ca 0.3 Ln 0.7 )PS 4 ] 0.3– framework, where the channels are occupied by severely disordered Cs + cations. A second new series with formula Cs 0.5 (Ca 0.5 Ln 0.5 )PS 4 crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c space group and exhibits a layered structure consisting of [(Ca 0.5 Ln 0.5 )PS 4 ] 0.5– layers with Cs + cations located between the layers for charge balance. Together with the parent structure type, LnPS 4 , these three structure types illustrate how the LnPS 4 structure changes with Cs + cation incorporation, reducing its dimensionality from 3D to 2D. The magnetic properties of Cs 0.3 [(Ca 0.3 Ce 0.7 )PS 4 ] and Cs 0.3 [(Ca 0.3 Pr 0.7 )PS 4 ] were studied and revealed no magnetic transition down to 2 K.

High-throughput investigation of the formation of double spinels

Spinel compounds, with the general chemical formula AB 2 O 4 , are a wide class of materials, where A and B can be a variety of cations, providing this structure with a great deal of functional flexibility and giving rise to its considerable scientific interest. Recently, a spinel with the general formula ABB'O 4 has been predicted, increasing the possible usability of the spinels due to the higher cation diversity in the so-called double spinel structure. In this study, we use density functional theory calculations to predict if double spinels can be formed between experimentally synthesized normal and inverse single spinels. Our computations reveal that 49 double spinels have negative mixing enthalpies and are thus thermodynamically stable, with most of the stable compounds being formed from one of two distinct cation orderings. We show that the 17 different cations that form the different double spinels have a preferred site, tetrahedral or octahedral, except for Mn, Fe and Co which can occupy both sites interchangeably. We also study the relation between mixing enthalpies and cation-specific properties, as well as ways to classify the double spinels into distinct types and spinel groups depending on the cation ordering and cation oxidation states, respectively. Furthermore, by applying the Sure Independence Screening and Sparsifying Operator (SISSO) approach on the coordination-dependent ionic radii of the elemental constituents, we show that an interplay of local strain and electrostatic dominated terms can be used to separate the double spinels into distinct structural types depending on the cation order and their oxidation states.

Unsupervised learning of representative local atomic arrangements in molecular dynamics data

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations present a data-mining challenge, given that they can generate a considerable amount of data but often rely on limited or biased human interpretation to examine their information content. By not asking the right questions of MD data we may miss critical information hidden within it. Here we combine dimensionality reduction (UMAP) and unsupervised hierarchical clustering (HDBSCAN) to quantitatively characterize prevalent coordination environments of chemical species within MD data. By focusing on local coordination, we significantly reduce the amount of data to be analyzed by extracting all distinct molecular formulas within a given coordination sphere. We then efficiently combine UMAP and HDBSCAN with alignment or shape-matching algorithms to partition these formulas into structural isomer families indicating their relative populations. The method was employed to reveal details of cation coordination in electrolytes based on molecular liquids.

Linear convergence of accelerated conditional gradient algorithms in spaces of measures

A class of generalized conditional gradient algorithms for the solution of optimization problem in spaces of Radon measures is presented. The method iteratively inserts additional Dirac-delta functions and optimizes the corresponding coefficients. Under general assumptions, a sub-linear [see formula in PDF] rate in the objective functional is obtained, which is sharp in most cases. To improve efficiency, one can fully resolve the finite-dimensional subproblems occurring in each iteration of the method. We provide an analysis for the resulting procedure: under a structural assumption on the optimal solution, a linear [see formula in PDF] convergence rate is obtained locally.

Flexibility of the factorized form of the unitary coupled cluster Ansatz

The factorized form of the unitary coupled cluster Ansatz is a popular state preparation Ansatz for electronic structure calculations of molecules on quantum computers. It is often viewed as an approximation (based on the Trotter product formula) for the conventional unitary coupled cluster operator. In this work, we show that the factorized form is quite flexible, allowing one to range from a conventional configuration interaction, to conventional unitary coupled cluster, to efficient approximations that lie in between these two. The variational minimization of the energy often allows simpler factorized unitary coupled cluster approximations to achieve high accuracy, even if they do not accurately approximate the Trotter product formula. This is similar to how quantum approximate optimization algorithms can achieve high accuracy with a small number of levels.
