Spectroscopy of Mars form 2.04 to 2.44 micron during the 1993 opposition: Absolute calibration and atmospheric vs mineralogic origin of narrow absorption features

We present moderate-resolution (lambda/delta lambda = 300 to 370) reflectance spectral of Mars from 2.04 to 2.44 microns that were obtained at United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) during the 1993 opposition. Seven narrow absorption features were detected and found to have a Mars origin. By comparison with solar and Mars atmospheric spectra, five of these features were attributed all or in part to Mars atmospheric CO2 or CO (2.052 +/- 0.003, 2.114 +/- 0.002, 2.150 +/- 0.003, 2.331 +/- 0.001, and 2.357 +/- 0.002 microns). Two of the bands (2.331 +/- 0.001 and 2.357 +/- 0.002 micron) appear to have widths and depths that are consistent with additional, nonatmospheric absorptions, although a solar contribution cannot be entirely ruled out. Two other weak bands centered at 2.278 +/- 0.002 and 2.296 +/- 0.002 microns may be at least partially mineralogic in origin. The data provide no conclusive identification of the mineralogy responsible for these absorption features. However, examination of terrestrial spectral libraries and previous mineralogy responsible for these absorption features. However, examination of terrestrial spectral libraires and previous moderate spectral resolution mineral studies indicates that the most likely origin of these features is either (bi)carbonate or (bi)sulfate anions in framework silicates of (Fe, Mg)-OH bonds in sheet silicates. If the bands are caused by phyllosilicate minerals, then an explanation must be found for the extremely narrow widths of the cation-OH features in the Mars spectra as compared to terrestrial minerals.

H I absorption toward cooling flows in clusters of galaxies

An H I survey of 14 cooling flow clusters and two noncooling flow clusters was conducted, and H I absorption features were detected against the nuclear radio continuum sources of two cooling flow dominant (CFD) galaxies, 2A 0335 + 096 and MKW3s. The absorption features are broad and redshifted with respect to the stellar absorption-line velocity of the CFDs by 90-225 km/s. This indicates that the H I is falling onto, and is probably gravitationally bound to, the CFDs. The kinematics of the H I clouds suggest a possible kinematic link between the warm and cold phases of the intracluster medium. The clouds are orders of magnitude smaller in radius and mass and larger in density than Galactic H I clouds. The detected CFDs have mass-accretion rates that are about 2.5 times larger than the CFDs that were not detected.

Dynamics of suspended sediment plumes in Lake Ontario

The author has identified the following significant results. Two unusual turbidity features were detected in imagery obtained over Lake Ontario on September 19, 1973. The location of a submerged sewer outfall was detected in frame 1423-15224-5 about 2 kilometers offshore opposite a treatment plant serving Rochester, New York. The other feature was a thermal heat plume made visible by an erosive eastward moving longshore current. The thermal plume, which extended about 3 kilometers into the lake, results from the discharge of cooling water from a nuclear power plant located 20 miles east of Rochester, New York. Under an offshore wind field, the outer edge of the Niagara River plume extended 30 kilometers into Lake Ontario on September 3, 1973. By way of contrast, a strong west-northwest wind on April 29, 1973, confined the plume to about 3 kilometers of the lake's south shore. The size of the Genesee River plume is largely dependent on discharge. During the spring high flow season, the plume extended over 22 square kilometers of the lake's surface on May 16, 1973. As runoff dwindled with the approach of summer, the plume contracted to less than 1 square kilometer in area by mid-July.

Far-infrared measurements of trace gases

A better detector system was developed for far infrared spectroscopy by usng cryogenic technology to cool bolometric detectors to approximately 0.4K. Technical assistance was provided to two submillimeter infrared balloon experiment (SIBEX) flights which demonstrated the diagnostic capability of far IR emission spectroscopy. It is estimated that more than a hundred spectral emission features were detected which are not due to the main emitting gases O3, O2, and H2O. The trace species sources for many features still remain unidentified and the spectra obtained during the SIBEX flights present a new source of information on stratospheric composition.

Feature extraction for subtle anomaly detection using semi-supervised learning

The demand for automated and effective monitoring techniques has soared with the increased digitization of industrial monitoring systems. State-of-the-art machine learning methods are effectively detecting abrupt changes in system states. However, these methods lack comparable maturity in detecting subtle changes that may be signs of incipient faults. This manuscript argues that the current anomaly detection methods can be enhanced by exploring weak patterns to enable subtle variation detection. Specifically, the concept of semi-supervised learning is employed, with labels representing knowledge about some anomalous conditions of a system. The basic idea is to extract a candidate set of weak patterns discarded by state-of-the-art baselining algorithms. With few labeled anomalous data, the algorithm selects the weak patterns and allows for their possible fusion using the highest sensitivity to the labeled anomalies. Here, the method’s applicability is demonstrated using a representative pressurized water reactor (PWR) model simulated by Dymola.

ALMA Spectral Line and Imaging Survey of a Low and a High Mass-Loss Rate AGB Star Between 335 and 362 GHz

Context. Low and intermediate mass stars are known to power strong stellar winds when evolving through the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase. Initial mass, luminosity, temperature, and composition determine the pulsation characteristics of the star and the dust species formed in the pulsating photospheric layers. Radiation pressure on these grains triggers the onset of a stellar wind. However, as of today, we still cannot predict the wind mass-loss rates and wind velocities from first principles neither do we know which species are the first to condense in the upper atmospheric regions. Aims. We aim to characterise the dominant physical, dynamical, and chemical processes in the inner wind region of two archetypical oxygen-rich (C/O<1) AGB stars, that is, the low mass-loss rate AGB star R Dor (M~ 1x10(exp 7) M☉/yr) and the high mass-loss rate AGB star IK Tau (M~5x10(exp 6) M☉/yr). The purpose of this study is to observe the key molecular species contributing to the formation of dust grains and to cross-link the observed line brightnesses of several species to the global and local properties of the star and its wind. Methods. A spectral line and imaging survey of IK Tau and R Dor was made with ALMA between 335 and 362 GHz (band 7) at a spatial resolution of ~150 mas, which corresponds to the locus of the main dust formation region of both targets. Results. Some two hundred spectral features from 15 molecules (and their isotopologues) were observed, including rotational lines in both the ground and vibrationally excited states (up to v=5 for SiO). Detected species include the gaseous precursors of dust grains such as SiO, AlO, AlOH, TiO, and TiO2.We present a spectral atlas for both stars and the parameters of all detected spectral features. A clear dichotomy for the sulphur chemistry is seen: while CS, SiS, SO, and SO2 are abundantly present in IK Tau, only SO and SO2 are detected in R Dor. Also other species such as NaCl, NS, AlO, and AlOH display a completely different behaviour. From some selected species, the minor isotopologues can be used to assess the isotopic ratios. The channel maps of many species prove that both large and small-scale inhomogeneities persist in the inner wind of both stars in the form of blobs, arcs, and/or a disk. The high sensitivity of ALMA allows us to spot the impact of these correlated density structures in the spectral line profiles. The spectral lines often display a half width at zero intensity much larger than expected from the terminal velocity, v1, previously derived for both objects (36 km/s versus v(∞)~17.7 km/s for IK Tau and 23 km/s versus v(∞)~5.5 km/s for R Dor). Both a more complex 3D morphology and a more forceful wind acceleration of the (underlying) isotropic wind can explain this trend. The formation of fractal grains in the region beyond _400 mas can potentially account for the latter scenario. From the continuum map, we deduce a dust mass of ~3.7 x 10(exp 7) M☉ and ~2 x 10(ex0 8) M☉ for IK Tau and R Dor, respectively. Conclusions. The observations presented here provide important constraints on the properties of these two oxygen-dominated AGB stellar winds. In particular, the ALMA data prove that both the dynamical and chemical properties are vastly different for this high mass-loss rate (IK Tau) and low mass-loss rate (R Dor) star.

Spatiotemporal features of traffic help reduce automatic accident detection time

Quick and reliable automatic detection of traffic accidents is of paramount importance to save human lives in transportation systems. However, automatically detecting when accidents occur has proven challenging, and minimizing the time to detect accidents (TTDA) by using traditional features in machine learning (ML) classifiers has plateaued. We hypothesize that accidents affect traffic farther from the accident location than previously reported. Therefore, leveraging traffic signatures from neighboring sensors that are adjacent to accidents should help improve their detection. We confirm this hypothesis by using verified ground-truth accident data, traffic data from radar detection system sensors, and light and weather conditions and show that we can minimize the TTDA while maximizing classification performance by considering spatiotemporal features of traffic. Specifically, we compare the performance of different ML classifiers (i.e, logistic regression, random forest, and XGBoost) when controlling for different numbers of neighboring sensors and TTDA horizons. We use data from interstates 75 and 24 in the metropolitan area that surrounds Chattanooga, TN. Our results show that the XGBoost classifier produces the best results by detecting accidents as quickly as 1.0 min after their occurrence with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of up to 83% and an average precision of up to 49%. We describe limitations, open challenges, and how the proposed framework can be used for quicker operational accident detection.

Block segmentation in feature space for realtime object detection in high granularity images

Computer vision has applications in object detection, image recognition and classification, and object tracking. One of the challenges of computer vision is the presence of useful information at multiple distance scales. Filtering techniques may sacrifice details at small scales in order to prioritize the analysis of large-scale features of the image. We present a strategy for coarse-graining multidimensional data while maintaining fine-grained detail for subsequent analysis. The algorithm is based on fixed-size block segmentation in the feature space. We apply this strategy to solve the long-standing challenge of detecting particle trajectories at the Large Hadron Collider in real time.

Suzaku View of the Neutron Star in the Dipping Source 4U 1822-37

The dipping X-ray source 4U 1822−37 was observed by Suzaku on 2006 Octrober 20 for a net exposure of 37 ks. The source was detected with the XIS at a 1-10 keV flux of 5.5 ×10(exp −10) erg per square centimeter per second, and with the HXD (HXD-PIN) at a 10-50 keV flux of 8.9 ×10(exp −10) erg per square centimeter per second. With HXD-PIN, the pulsation was detected at a barycentric period of 0.592437 seconds, and its change rate was reconfirmed as −2.43 × 10(exp −12) seconds per second. The 1-50 keV spectra of 4U 1822-37 were found to be very similar to those of Her X- 1 in the slopes, cutoff and iron lines. Three iron lines (Fe Kalpha, Fe XXV, and Fe XXVI) were detected, on top of a 1-50 keV continuum that is described by an NPEX model plus a soft blackbody. In addition, a cyclotron resonance scattering feature was detected significantly ( greater than 99% confidence), at an energy of 33+/-2 keV with a depth of 0.4(sup +0.6)/(sub −0.3). Therefore, the neutron star in this source is concluded to have a strong magnetic field of 2.8 × 10(exp 12) G. Further assuming that the source has a relatively high intrinsic luminosity of several times 10(exp 37) erg per second, its spectral and timing properties are consistently explained.

Application of HCMM data to regional geologic analysis for mineral and energy resource evaluation

Using a thermal-inertia mapping algorithm which provides greater discrimination capability than those in current use, a geologic features was detected in the Cabeza Prieta, Arizona, area. Initially seen on an image formed as a difference of two thermal-inertia images, it was found to be the extension of a bilaterally symmetrical aeromagnetic feature which trends northeast for a distance of at least 1200 km.

Confidence about line features in Her X-1 spectrum

A balloon borne X-ray telescope was flown Aire-surl'Adour, France to search for pulsation of the X-ray source HER X1. The source was measured for about 3500 s relative exposure larger than 0.75 and features were detected at 57.5 plus or minus 7.5 keV and 135 plus or minus 10 keV in the spectrum. Data were reanalyzed in terms of possibility of gain shift encoder. The very strong dependence of the line features on such a shift is discussed.

Simultaneous in situ magnetospheric and ionospheric detection of detached plasmas

On January 19, 1972, in situ measurements by Explorer 45, orbiting in the magnetosphere near the equatorial plane, and ISIS 2, in a circular polar orbit at 1400 km, simultaneously detected patches of enhanced ionization outside the main body of the plasmasphere. The magnetospheric plasma region extended between (geomagnetic latitude) L values 3.4-4.8 and the ionospheric electron density enhancement extended between L values 3.6-4.4. The two plasma features were detected near 22 hours magnetic local time (MLT). Based on a number of observations, it is inferred that the plasma density enhancement persisted for more than 5 hours and extended over at least 2 hours in MLT near L = 5. These results provide experimental evidence that some detached magnetospheric plasma regions are signatures of a flux tube containing enhanced ionization throughout a volume extending from the topside ionosphere out to the equator.

CO and OH absorption toward the low-latitude radio source 2023+336

We report interferometric observations of (12)CO (0 to 1) 115 GHz and OH 1667 MHz absorption toward the extragalactic radio continuum source 2023+336. Our data show two partially blended absorption features near +2 km/s LSR which probably originate in local molecular clouds in the Cygnus rift, approximately 0.7 kpc away. The CO lines are optically thin, with tau(sub CO) = 0.5 +/- 0.1, while tau(sub OH) = 0.030 +/- 0.004. The detected absorption features have a combined velocity width of 3.0 km/s FWHM, greater than the width of the corresponding (12)CO emission features, Full Width of Half Maximum (FWHM) = 2.3 km/s, indicating that the absorbing gas in a approximately 1 AU diameter column shows a greater velocity range than the gas in the 0.2 pc diameter emission beam. CO excitation temperatures T(sub ex), range from 2.7 to 7.0 K across the line profile, implying that the gas along this line of sight is rotationally quite cold. By measuring the (12)CO excitation temperature and optical depth, we derive an abundance ratio, (CO)/(H2), of 6 x 10(exp -6), which is more than an order of magnitude lower than is seen elsewhere. Our low observed CO optical depth is inconsistent with the ratio of (12)CO to (13)CO emission line integrals, 16:1, which implies that the (12)CO is optically thick. As a solution to these anomalies, we propose that the CO absorption and emission arise from preferentially different parts of the molecular medium. Other solutions would require an anomalous (12)CO/(13)CO abundance ratio and an anomalous CO/H2 abundance ratio, or much lower excitation temperatures. Since we find no absorption at negative velocities with tau greater than 0.23 (2.5 sigma), there is no compelling evidence for the existence of an extensive population of cold molecular gas in the outer Galaxy along this line of sight.

Daytime Water Detection Based on Sky Reflections

A water body s surface can be modeled as a horizontal mirror. Water detection based on sky reflections and color variation are complementary. A reflection coefficient model suggests sky reflections dominate the color of water at ranges > 12 meters. Water detection based on sky reflections: (1) geometrically locates the pixel in the sky that is reflecting on a candidate water pixel on the ground (2) predicts if the ground pixel is water based on color similarity and local terrain features. Water detection has been integrated on XUVs.

Material around the Centaur (2060) Chiron from the 2018 November 28 UT Stellar Occultation

A stellar occultation of Gaia DR3 2646598228351156352 by the Centaur (2060) Chiron was observed from the South African Astronomical Observatory on 2018 November 28 UT. Here we present a positive detection of material surrounding Chiron from the 74-inch telescope for this event. Additionally, a global atmosphere is ruled out at the tens of microbars level for several possible atmospheric compositions. There are multiple 3σ drops in the 74-inch light curve: three during immersion and two during emersion. Occulting material is located between 242 and 270 km from the center of the nucleus in the sky plane. Assuming the ring-plane orientation proposed for Chiron from the 2011 occultation, the flux drops are located at 352, 344, and 316 km (immersion) and 357 and 364 km (emersion) from the center, with normal optical depths of 0.26, 0.36, and 0.22 (immersion) and 0.26 and 0.18 (emersion) and equivalent widths between 0.7 and 1.3 km. This detection is similar to the previously proposed two-ring system and is located within the error bars of that ring-pole plane; however, the normal optical depths are less than half of the previous values, and three features are detected on immersion. These results suggest that the properties of the surrounding material have evolved between the 2011, 2018, and 2022 observations.
