Baseline vs. DER Scenario

Projections and associated uncertainty estimates are generated for a variety of user-selectable EV charging sessions, electricity tariffs, subsidy levels, revenue schemes, charging station configurations, and on-site solar and/or storage options. The outputs are presented in CHIP's web portal browser in the form of easily interpretable graphics (interactive graphs and bar charts) that facilitate convenient comparison among different scenarios to aid decision-making. The user should bring assumptions for modeling on simulation planning horizon, number of EV charging sessions per year, electricity costs (energy and demand charge rates; flat versus time-of-use rate), site capital costs (equipment for EV chargers and transformer), solar PV, and battery energy storage (kW).

Microstructure development during rapid alloy solidification

Abstract Solidification processing of structural alloys can take place over an extremely wide range of solid–liquid interface velocities spanning six orders of magnitude, from the low-velocity constitutional supercooling limit of microns/s to the high-velocity absolute stability limit of m/s. In between these two limits, the solid–liquid interface is morphologically unstable and typically forms cellular-dendritic microstructures, but also other microstructures that remain elusive. Rapid developments in additive manufacturing have renewed the interest in modeling the high-velocity range, where approximate analytical theories provide limited predictions. In this article, we discuss recent advances in phase-field modeling of rapid solidification of metallic alloys, including a brief description of state-of-the-art experiments used for model validation. We describe how phase-field models can cope with the dual challenge of carrying out simulations on experimentally relevant length- and time scales and incorporating nonequilibrium effects at the solid–liquid interface that become dominant at rapid rates. We present selected results, illustrating how phase-field simulations have yielded unprecedented insights into high-velocity interface dynamics, shedding new light on both the absolute stability limit and the formation of banded microstructures that are a hallmark of rapid alloy solidification near this limit. We also discuss state-of-the-art experiments used to validate those insights. Graphical abstract

Elucidating the complex interplay between thermodynamics, kinetics, and electrochemistry in battery electrodes through phase-field modeling

Abstract This article highlights applications of phase-field modeling to electrochemical systems, with a focus on battery electrodes. We first provide an overview on the physical processes involved in electrochemical systems and applications of the phase-field approach to understand the thermodynamic and kinetic mechanisms underlying these processes. We employ two examples to highlight how realistic thermodynamics and kinetics can naturally be incorporated into phase-field modeling of electrochemical processes. One is a composite battery cathode with an intercalation compound (Li x FePO 4 ) as the electrochemically active material, and the other is a displacement reaction compound (Li–Cu–TiS 2 ). With the input parameters mostly from atomistic calculations and experimental measurements, phase-field simulations allowed us to untangle the interactions among transport, reaction, electricity, chemistry, and thermodynamics that lead to highly complex evolution of the materials within battery electrodes. The implications of these observations for battery performance and degradation are discussed. Graphical abstract

Emerging magnetic materials for electric vehicle drive motors

Abstract Increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing demand for the permanent magnets that drive their motors, as approximately 80% of modern EV drivetrains rely on high-performance permanent magnets to convert electricity into torque. In turn, these high-performance permanent magnets rely on rare earth elements for their magnetic properties. These elements are “critical” (i.e., at risk of limiting the growth of renewable energy technologies such as EVs), which motivates an exploration for alternative materials. In this article, we overview the relevant fundamentals of permanent magnets, describe commercialized and emerging materials, and add perspective on future areas of research. Currently, the leading magnetic material for EV motors is Nd 2 Fe 14 B, with samarium-cobalt compounds (SmCo 5 and Sm 2 Co 17 ) providing the only high-performing commercialized alternative. Emerging materials that address criticality concerns include Sm 2 Fe 17 N 3 , Fe 16 N 2 , and the L1 0 structure of FeNi, which use lower cost elements that produce similar magnetic properties. However, these temperature-sensitive materials are incompatible with current metallurgical processing techniques. We provide perspective on how advances in low-temperature synthesis and processing science could unlock new classes of high-performing magnetic materials for a paradigm shift beyond rare earth-based magnets. In doing so, we explore the question: What magnetic materials will drive future EVs? Graphical abstract
