Signal Whisperers: Enhancing Wireless Reception Using DRL-Guided Reflector Arrays

This paper presents a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) approach for controlling adjustable metallic reflector arrays to enhance wireless signal reception in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. Unlike conventional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) that require complex channel estimation, our system employs a centralized training with decentralized execution (CTDE) paradigm where individual agents corresponding to reflector segments autonomously optimize reflector element orientation in three-dimensional space using spatial intelligence based on user location information. Through extensive ray-tracing simulations with dynamic user mobility, the proposed multi-agent beam-focusing framework demonstrates substantial performance improvements over single-agent reinforcement learning baselines, while maintaining rapid adaptation to user movement within one simulation step. Comprehensive evaluation across varying user densities and reflector configurations validates system scalability and robustness. The results demonstrate the potential of learning-based approaches for adaptive wireless propagation control.

Guided combinatorial synthesis and automated characterization expedites the discovery of hard, electrically conductive Pt x Au 1-x films

Sputter-deposited Pt-Au thin films have been reported to develop a hard, stable, nanocrystalline structure, yet little is known about how these characteristics vary with Pt x Au 1-x composition and process conditions. Toward this end, this document describes an extensive, combinatorial Pt-Au thin film library including characterized film compositions, structure, and properties. Complemented by kinematic Monte Carlo simulations of codeposition, a broad range of Pt x Au 1-x compositions (from x ~ 0.02 to 0.93) was first established by sputtering with varied magnetron powers and gun tilt angles. Further, the produced films were subsequently interrogated using automated nanoindentation, x-ray reflectivity, x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, surface profilometry, four-point probe sheet resistance techniques, and wavelength dispersive spectroscopy in order to determine how hardness, modulus, density, surface roughness, structure, and resistivity vary with film stoichiometry and process parameters. Combinatorial films displayed an assortment of properties with the hardness of some films exceeding values reported previously for this material system. High hardness, high modulus, and low resistivity were generally attained when using increased deposition energy and reduced angle-of-incidence processes. Overall, the research identified promising, new Pt x Au 1-x compositions for future study and pinpointed strategies for improved deposition.

Chatbots can guide experimentalists to avoid many common mistakes in measuring fluorescence spectra

The concepts of fluorescence spectroscopy are well established, yet the experimental collection of a spectrum is susceptible to a range of errors. A recent study showed that chatbots – derived from substantial advances in artificial intelligence – can provide practical assistance to the experimentalist during collection of absorption spectra and thereby achieve improved quality. Fluorescence, while the complement of absorption, is prone to a far richer array of experimental errors encompassing environmental factors, instrumental settings, and experimentalist mistakes. Here, 10 chatbots (ChatGPT 5, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI Llama 4, Claude Sonnet 4.5, X.ai Grok 4, Perplexity Pro, DeepSeek V3.1, Z.ai GLM-4.6, and KIMI K2) have been evaluated for the suitability in providing quality-improvement advice to the experimentalist during acquisition of fluorescence spectra. Significant opportunities for practical assistance are noted, although intervention by a domain expert is often required. Here, if combined with image recognition and/or signal processing, chatbots embedded in instruments may enable real-time guidance during fluorescence data acquisition.

Adversarial Binaries: AI-guided Instrumentation Methods for Malware Detection Evasion

Adversarial binaries are executable files that have been altered without loss of function by an AI agent in order to deceive malware detection systems. Progress in this emergent vein of research has been constrained by the complex and rigid structure of executable files. Although prior work has demonstrated that these binaries deceive a variety of malware classification models which rely on disparate feature sets, a consensus as to the best approach has not been reached, either in terms of the optimization algorithms or the instrumentation methods. Furthermore, although inconsistencies in the data sets, target classifiers, and functionality verification methods make head-to-head comparisons difficult, here we extract lessons learned and make recommendations for future research.

Nanobody screening and machine learning guided identification of cross-variant anti-SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing heavy-chain only antibodies

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to persist, demonstrating the risks posed by emerging infectious diseases to national security, public health, and the economy. Development of new vaccines and antibodies for emerging viral threats requires substantial resources and time, and traditional development platforms for vaccines and antibodies are often too slow to combat continuously evolving immunological escape variants, reducing their efficacy over time. Previously, we designed a next-generation synthetic humanized nanobody (Nb) phage display library and demonstrated that this library could be used to rapidly identify highly specific and potent neutralizing heavy chain-only antibodies (HCAbs) with prophylactic and therapeutic efficacy in vivo against the original SARS-CoV-2. In this study, we used a combination of high throughput screening and machine learning (ML) models to identify HCAbs with potent efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 viral variants of interest (VOIs) and concern (VOCs). To start, we screened our highly diverse Nb phage display library against several pre-Omicron VOI and VOC receptor binding domains (RBDs) to identify panels of cross-reactive HCAbs. Using HCAb affinity for SARS-CoV-2 VOI and VOCs (pre-Omicron variants) and model features from other published data, we were able to develop a ML model that successfully identified HCAbs with efficacy against Omicron variants, independent of our experimental biopanning workflow. This biopanning informed ML approach reduced the experimental screening burden by 78% to 90% for the Omicron BA.5 and Omicron BA.1 variants, respectively. The combined approach can be applied to other emerging viruses with pandemic potential to rapidly identify effective therapeutic antibodies against emerging variants.

STAT7 v1.2 User Guide: The STAT7 Code for Statistical Propagation of Uncertainties in Steady-State Thermal Hydraulics Analysis of Plate-Fueled Reactors

The STAT7 software was developed to perform steady-state, single-phase thermal hydraulics analysis of plate-fueled reactors based on statistical propagation of uncertainties. Application of the software is for non-power research and test reactors, including conversion to low-enriched uranium fuel of U.S. High-Performance Research Reactors such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology Research Reactor. Since it can be necessary to repeat analysis during fuel reloading, STAT7 accommodates flexibility in analyzing many realistic aspects of reactor fuel management. STAT7 uses a Monte Carlo approach to model uncertainty in common fuel fabrication parameters and other key reactor operating parameters required for thermal hydraulics analyses of research and test reactors. These safety calculations are ultimately intended to protect against high fuel plate temperatures due to critical heat flux, or onset of flow instability. STAT7 supports water properties based on the IAPWS-IF97 functions (The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam Industrial Formulation 1997 for the Thermodynamic Properties of Water and Steam) in addition to the fit functions. STAT7 predicts axial profiles of fuel, cladding, and coolant temperature along a lateral stripe that runs the full length of the fuel plate from the bottom to the top. STAT7 can simultaneously analyze all of the axial nodes of all of the fuel plates and all of the coolant channels for one latera stripe of a fuel element. Power splits are calculated for each axial node of each plate to determine how much of the power goes out each face of the plate. By running STAT7 multiple times, full core analysis can be performed by analyzing the margin to onset of nucleate boiling and onset of flow instability for each axial node of each stripe of each plate of each fuel element in the core.

The VTK-m User's Guide (V. 2.2)

High-performance computing relies on ever finer threading. Advances in processor technology include ever greater numbers of cores, hyperthreading, accelerators with integrated blocks of cores, and special vectorized instructions, all of which require more software parallelism to achieve peak performance. Traditional visualization solutions cannot support this extreme level of concurrency. Extreme scale systems require a new programming model and a fundamental change in how we design algorithms. To address these issues we created VTK-m: the visualization toolkit for multi-/many-core architectures. VTK-m supports a number of algorithms and the ability to design further algorithms through a top-down design with an emphasis on extreme parallelism. VTK-m also provides support for finding and building links across topologies, making it possible to perform operations that determine manifold surfaces, interpolate generated values, and find adjacencies. Although VTK-m provides a simplified high-level interface for programming, its template-based code removes the overhead of abstraction.
