Magnetic excitations and interactions in the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb iridate β –Li 2 ⁢IrO 3

Here, we present a thorough experimental study of the three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet β –Li 2 ⁢IrO 3 , using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS), time-domain terahertz spectroscopy (TDTS), and heat capacity measurements. The main results include a massive low-temperature reorganization of the INS spectral weight that evolves into a broad peak centered around 12 meV, and a distinctive peak in the terahertz data at 2.8(1) meV. A detailed comparison to powder-averaged spin-wave theory calculations reveals that the positions of these two features are controlled by the anisotropic Γ coupling and the Heisenberg exchange J, respectively. The refined microscopic spin model places β –Li 2 ⁢IrO 3 in close proximity to the Kitaev spin liquid phase.

Magnetic field induced phase transition in spinel GeNi 2 O 4

Cubic spinel GeNi 2 O 4 exhibits intriguing magnetic properties with two successive antiferromagnetic phase transitions (T N1 ≈ 12.1 and T N2 ≈ 11.4 K) with the absence of any structural transition. We have performed detailed heat capacity and magnetic measurements in different crystallographic orientations. A new magnetic phase in presence of magnetic field (H ≥ 4 T) along the [111] direction is revealed, which is not observed when the magnetic field is applied along the [100] and [110] directions. High field neutron powder diffraction measurements confirm such a change in magnetic phase, which could be ascribed to a spin reorientation in the presence of magnetic field. In conclusion, a strong magnetic anisotropy and competing magnetic interactions play a crucial role on the complex magnetic behavior in this cubic system.

MgPd 2 Sb : A Mg-based Heusler-type superconductor

Here, we report the synthesis and physical properties of a full Heusler compound, MgPd 2 Sb, which we found to show superconductivity below T c = 2.2 K . MgPd 2 Sb was obtained by a two-step solid-state reaction method and its purity and cubic crystal structure [Fm-3m, a = 6.4523(1) Å ] were confirmed by powder x-ray diffraction. Normal and superconducting states were studied by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The results show that MgPd 2 Sb is a type-II, weak coupling superconductor ( λ e-p = 0.53 ). The observed pressure dependence of T c (ΔT c /p ≈ -0.23 K / GPa ) is one of the strongest reported for a superconducting Heusler compound. The electronic structure, phonons, and electron-phonon coupling in MgPd 2 Sb were theoretically investigated. The obtained results are in agreement with the experiment, confirming the electron-phonon coupling mechanism of superconductivity. We compare the superconducting parameters to those of all reported Heusler-type superconductors.

Relationship between A-site cation and magnetic structure in 3d–5d–4f double perovskite iridates Ln 2 NiIrO 6 ( Ln = La, Pr, Nd)

We report a comprehensive investigation of Ln 2 NiIrO 6 (Ln=La, Pr, Nd) using thermodynamic and transport properties, neutron powder diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the role of A-site cations on the magnetic interactions in this family of hybrid 3d–5d–4f compositions. Magnetic structure determination using neutron diffraction reveals antiferromagnetism for La 2 NiIrO 6 , a collinear ferrimagnetic Ni and Ir state that is driven to long-range antiferromagnetism upon the onset of Nd ordering in Nd 2 NiIrO 6 , and a noncollinear ferrimagnetic Ni and Ir sublattice interpenetrated by a ferromagnetic Pr lattice for Pr 2 NiIrO 6 . For Pr 2 NiIrO 6 , heat-capacity results reveal the presence of two independent magnetic sublattices, and transport resistivity indicates insulating behavior and a conduction pathway that is thermally mediated. Here, a first principles DFT calculation elucidates the existence of the two independent magnetic sublattices within Pr 2 NiIrO 6 and offers insight into the behavior in La 2 NiIrO 6 and Nd 2 NiIrO 6 . Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is consistent with spin-orbit coupling splitting the t 2 g manifold of octahedral Ir 4+ into a J eff = 1/2 and J eff = 3/2 state for all members of the series considered.

Transition between Heavy-Fermion-Strange-Metal and Quantum Spin Liquid in a $4⁢d$-Electron Trimer Lattice

We present experimental evidence that a heavy Fermi surface consisting of itinerant, charge-neutral spinons underpins both heavy-fermion-strange-metal (without f electrons) and quantum-spin-liquid states in the 4d-electron trimer lattice, Ba 4 Nb 1-x Ru 3+x O 12 (|x| < 0.20). These two exotic states both exhibit an extraordinarily large entropy, a linear heat capacity extending into the milli-Kelvin regime, a linear thermal conductivity at low temperatures, and separation of charges and spins. Furthermore, the insulating spin liquid is a much better thermal conductor than the heavy-fermion-strange-metal that separately is observed to strongly violate the Wiedemann- Franz law. Here, we propose that at the heart of this 4d system is a universal, heavy spinon Fermi surface that provides a unified framework for explaining the exotic phenomena observed throughout the entire series. The control of such exotic ground states provided by variable Nb concentration offers a new paradigm for studies of correlated quantum matter.

Magnetic order in the van der Waals antiferromagnet CrPS 4 : Anisotropic H – T phase diagrams and effects of pressure

Here, single crystalline samples of the van der Waals antiferromagnet CrPS 4 were studied by measurements of specific heat and comprehensive anisotropic temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent magnetization. In addition, measurements of the heat capacity and magnetization were performed under pressures of up to ~ 21 and ~ 14 kbar, respectively. At ambient pressure, two magnetic transitions are observed: second order from a paramagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state at T N ~ 37 K, and a first-order spin reorientation transition at T * ~ 34 K. Anisotropic H – T phase diagrams were constructed using the M ( T , H ) data. As pressure is increased, T N is weakly suppressed with d T N / d P ≈ – 0.1 K/kbar. T * , on the other hand, is suppressed quite rapidly, with d T * / d P ≈ – 2 K/kbar, extrapolating to a possible quantum phase transition at P c ~ 15 kbar.

Thermodynamic and electrical transport properties of UTe 2 under uniaxial stress

Despite intense experimental efforts, the nature of the unconventional superconducting order parameter of UTe 2 remains elusive. This puzzle stems from reports of either a single or a double superconducting transition at ambient pressure as well as a complex pressure-temperature phase diagram. To address this issue, we measured the heat capacity and electrical resistivity of UTe 2 under compressive uniaxial stress σ applied along different crystallographic directions. We find that the critical temperature T c of the single observed bulk superconducting transition decreases with σ along [100] and [110] but increases with σ along [001]. Aside from its effect on T c , c-axis stress leads to a significant piezoresistivity. Importantly, an in-plane shear stress σ xy does not induce any observable splitting of the superconducting transition over a stress range of σ xy ≈ 0.17GPa. Furthermore, this result suggests that the superconducting order parameter of UTe 2 may be single component at ambient pressure.

Complex magnetic structure in Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 with isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimer

We report detailed magnetic, transport, heat-capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements of Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 , a compound consisting of isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimers. We show that this system develops long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at T N ~ 60 K without structural distortion or metal-insulator-type transition, which is in sharp contrast to other Barium Ruthenate trimer systems such as 9R-BaRuO 3 and Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 . A complex magnetic structure is revealed which is attributable to the magnetic frustration due to competing exchange interactions between Ru ions on different crystallographic sites within the Ru 3 O 12 trimer and different degree of orbital hybridization on different Ru-sites. In conclusion, we have also investigated the magnetic structure of Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 for comparisons.

Synthesis and physical properties of a new layered ferromagnet Cr 1.21 Te 2

Single crystals of a new layered compound, Cr 1.21 Te 2 , were synthesized via a vapor transport method. The crystal structure and physical properties were characterized by single crystal and powder x-ray diffraction, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, zero-field heat capacity, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Cr 1.21 Te 2 , containing two Cr sites, crystalizes in a trigonal structure with a space group P-3 (No. 147). The Cr site in the interstitial layer is partially occupied. Physical property characterizations indicate that Cr 1.21 Te 2 is metallic with hole pockets at the Fermi energy and undergoes a ferromagnetic phase transition at ~ 173 K. The magnetic moments align along the c axis in the ferromagnetic state. Based on low-temperature magnetization, the spin stiffness constant, D, and spin excitation gap, Δ , were estimated according to Bloch's law to be D = 94 ± 17 meV Å 2 and Δ = 0.45 ± 0.33 meV, suggesting its possible application as a low dimensional ferromagnet.

Pool boiling critical heat flux studies of accident tolerant fuel cladding materials

Pool boiling experiments have been performed at atmospheric pressure on potential accident tolerant fuel (ATF) cladding materials (Zirlo®, Cr coated Zirlo®, FeCrAl coated Zirlo®, and monolithic SiC) to evaluate the Critical Heat Flux (CHF) points. Corrosion resistant coatings of Cr and FeCrAl alloy were deposited on flat Zirlo® samples using cold spray technology. The as-prepared samples after uniform surface polishing were subjected to autoclave tests at 360 °C water and 18.6 MPa for 360 h to simulate prototypic corrosion of the ATF cladding materials in LWR normal operation. Surface characteristics potentially influencing CHF such as surface morphology, roughness, static contact angle, and surface chemistry were characterized using a suite of characterization methods including scanning electron microscopy, 3D optical profilometry, optical contact angle measurements, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Thermo-physical properties of the samples such as density, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity were measured by differential scanning calorimetry and laser flash thermal diffusivity measurement. FeCrAl coatings showed CHF values comparable to bare Zirlo® samples, while slightly lower CHF values were observed for Cr coated samples and bulk SiC flats (produced by chemical vapor deposition, CVD). As-deposited Cr coatings showed 67% higher CHF than the as-polished Cr coatings due to its higher surface roughness level. The autoclave testing for the prepared samples generally increased the CHF except for the surface polished Cr coatings. Similar CHF values of bare Zirlo®, FeCrAl coating, and CVD SiC samples were observed after autoclave test but there were negligible change CHF of Cr coatings. XPS studies indicated that the formation or deposition of a few monolayers of hydrophobic carbonaceous species on surface can affect CHF values. The trends in CHF data are discussed in terms of evolution of the surface characteristics of the ATF materials.

Nonlinear magnons and exchange Hamiltonians of the delafossite proximate quantum spin liquid candidates KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are theoretical states of matter with long-range entanglement and exotic quasiparticles. However, they generally elude quantitative theory, rendering their underlying phases mysterious and hampering efforts to identify experimental QSL states. Here we study triangular-lattice resonating-valence-bond QSL candidate materials KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 . We measure the magnon modes in their 1/3 plateau phase, where quantitative theory is tractable, using inelastic neutron scattering and fit them using nonlinear spin wave theory. We also fit the KYbSe 2 heat capacity using high-temperature series expansion. Both KYbSe 2 fits yield the same magnetic Hamiltonian to within uncertainty, confirming previous estimates and showing the Heisenberg ratio J 2 / J 1 to be an accurate model for these materials. Most importantly, comparing KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 shows that the smaller A -site Na + ion has a larger J 2 / J 1 ratio. However, hydrostatic pressure applied to KYbSe 2 increases the ordering temperature (a result consistent with density functional theory calculations), indicating that pressure decreases J 2 / J 1 . In conclusion, these results show how the periodic table and hydrostatic pressure can tune the A YbSe 2 materials in a controlled way.

Understanding Reentrance in Frustrated Magnets: The Case of the Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 Pyrochlore

Reentrance, the return of a system from an ordered phase to a previously encountered less-ordered one as a controlled parameter is continuously varied, is a recurring theme found in disparate physical systems, yet its microscopic cause is often not investigated thoroughly. Here, through detailed characterization and theoretical modeling, we uncover the microscopic mechanism behind reentrance in the strongly frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 . We use single crystal heat capacity measurements to expose that Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 exhibits multiple instances of reentrance in its magnetic field B vs temperature T phase diagram for magnetic fields along three cubic high symmetry directions. Through classical Monte Carlo simulations, mean field theory, and classical linear spin-wave expansions, we argue that the origins of the multiple occurrences of reentrance observed in Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 are linked to soft modes. These soft modes arise from phase competition and enhance thermal fluctuations that entropically stabilize a specific ordered phase, resulting in an increased transition temperature for certain field values and thus the reentrant behavior. Our work represents a detailed examination into the mechanisms responsible for reentrance in a frustrated magnet and may serve as a template for the interpretation of reentrant phenomena in other physical systems.

Frustrated Heisenberg J 1 – J 2 model within the stretched diamond lattice of LiYbO 2

We investigate the magnetic properties of LiYbO 2 , containing a three-dimensionally frustrated, diamondlike lattice via neutron scattering, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements. The stretched diamond network of Yb 3+ ions in LiYbO 2 enters a long-range incommensurate, helical state with an ordering wave vector k = (0.384,±0.384,0) that “locks-in” to a commensurate k = (1/3,±1/3,0) phase under the application of a magnetic field. The spiral magnetic ground state of LiYbO 2 can be understood in the framework of a Heisenberg J 1 –J 2 Hamiltonian on a stretched diamond lattice, where the propagation vector of the spiral is uniquely determined by the ratio of J 2 /|J 1 |. Here, the pure Heisenberg model, however, fails to account for the relative phasing between the Yb moments on the two sites of the bipartite lattice, and this detail as well as the presence of an intermediate, partially disordered, magnetic state below 1 K suggests interactions beyond the classical Heisenberg description of this material.

Sample-dependent and sample-independent thermal transport properties of α – RuCl 3

In this study, we investigated the thermal transport properties of two α–RuCl 3 crystals with different degrees of stacking disorder to understand the origin of the previously reported oscillatory feature in the field dependence of thermal conductivity. Crystal I shows only one magnetic order around 13 K, which is near the highest T N for α–RuCl 3 with stacking faults. Crystal II has less stacking disorder, with a dominant heat capacity at 7.6 K along with weak anomalies at 10 and 13 K. In the temperature and field dependence of thermal conductivity, no obvious anomaly was observed to be associated with the magnetic order around 13 K for either crystal or around 10 K for crystal II. Crystal II showed clear oscillations in the field dependence of thermal conductivity, while crystal I did not. For crystal I, an L-shaped region in the temperature-field space was observed where thermal Hall conductivity κ xy /T is within ±20% of the half quantized thermal Hall conductivity κ HQ /T, while for crystal II, κ xy /T reaches κ HQ /T only in the high field and high temperature regime with no indication of a plateau at κ HQ /T. Our thermal conductivity data suggest the oscillatory features are inherent to the zigzag ordered phase with T N near 7 K. Our planar thermal Hall effect measurements suggest the sensitivity of this phenomena to stacking disorder. Overall, our results highlight the importance of understanding and controlling crystallographic disorder for obtaining and interpreting intrinsic thermal transport properties in α–RuCl 3 .

Dipolar Spin Ice Regime Proximate to an All-In-All-Out Néel Ground State in the Dipolar-Octupolar Pyrochlore Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7

The dipolar-octupolar (DO) pyrochlores, R 2 M 2 O 7 ( R = Ce , Sm , Nd ), are key players in the search for realizable novel quantum spin liquid (QSL) states as a large parameter space within the DO pyrochlore phase diagram is theorized to host QSL states of both dipolar and octupolar nature. New single crystals and powders of Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 , synthesized by hydrothermal techniques, present an opportunity for a new characterization of the exchange parameters in Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 using the near-neighbor X Y Z model Hamiltonian associated with DO pyrochlores. Utilizing quantum numerical linked cluster expansion fits to heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, and classical Monte Carlo calculations to the diffuse neutron diffraction of the new hydrothermally grown Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 samples, we place Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 ’s ground state within the ordered dipolar all-in-all-out (AIAO) Néel phase, with quantum Monte Carlo calculations showing a transition to long-range order at temperatures below those accessed experimentally. Indeed, our new neutron diffraction measurements on the hydrothermally grown Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 powders show a broad signal at low scattering wave vectors, reminiscent of a spin ice, in striking contrast from previous powder neutron diffraction on samples grown from solid-state synthesis, which found diffuse scattering at high scattering wave vectors associated with magnetic and suggested an octupolar quantum spin ice state. We conclude that new hydrothermally grown Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 samples host a finite-temperature proximate dipolar spin ice phase, above the expected transition to AIAO Néel order. $A$-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic phase diagram of the trigonal Eu spin-$\frac{7}{2}$ triangular-lattice compound $\mathrm{EuSn_2As_2}$

The trigonal compound EuSn 2 As 2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the N´eel temperature T N = 23.5(2) K from neutron-diffraction measurements. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn 2 As 2 and the evolution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are the zero-field single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H, T), magnetic susceptibility χ(H, T) = M(H,T)/H, heat capacity C p (H, T), and electrical resistivity ρ(H, T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and χ(T) measurements both indicate a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below T N , where the Eu 2+ spins S = 7/2 in a triangular ab-plane layer (hexagonal unit cell) are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane whereas the spins in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis are aligned antiferromagnetically. The χ(H ab , T) and χ(Hc, T) data together indicate a smooth crossover between the collinear AFM alignment and an unknown magnetic structure at H ≈ 0.12 T. Dynamic spin fluctuations up to 60 K are evident in the χ(T), Cp(T) and ρ(H, T) measurements, a temperature that is more than twice T N . The ρ(H, T) is consistent with a low-carrier-density metal with strong magnetic scattering and does not reflect a contribution of the topological state of the material as reported earlier by ARPES measurements. This observation is consistent with previous ones for other topological insulators where the chemical potential is above the Dirac point so that ARPES readily detects the surface states, whereas resistivity measurements do not. Finally, the magnetic phase diagrams for both H ∥ c and H ∥ ab in the H-T plane are constructed from the T N (H), χ(H, T), Cp(H, T), and ρ(H, T) data.

Canted antiferromagnetic phases in the candidate layered Weyl material EuMnSb 2

EuMnSb 2 is a candidate topological material which can be tuned towards a Weyl semimetal, but there are differing reports for its antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases. The coupling of bands dominated by pure Sb layers hosting topological fermions to Mn and Eu magnetic states provides a potential path to tune the topological properties. In this study we present single-crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization, and heat-capacity data as well as polycrystalline 151 Eu Mössbauer data which show that three AFM phases exist as a function of temperature, and we present a detailed analysis of the magnetic structure in each phase. The Mn magnetic sublattice orders into a C-type AFM structure below T N Mn = 323 (1) K with the ordered Mn magnetic moment μ Mn lying perpendicular to the layers. AFM ordering of the Eu sublattice occurs below T N Eu1 = 23 (1) K with the ordered Eu magnetic moment μ Eu canted away from the layer normal and μ Mn retaining its higher temperature order. μ Eu is ferromagnetically aligned within each Eu layer but exhibits a complicated AFM layer stacking. Both of these higher-temperature phases are described by magnetic space group (MSG) $\mathcal{Pn'm'a'}$ with the chemical and magnetic unit cells having the same dimensions. Cooling below T N Eu2 =9 (1) K reveals a third AFM phase where μ Mn remains unchanged but μ Eu develops an additional substantial in-plane canting. This phase has MSG $\mathcal{P11}$ $\frac{2_1}{a′}$. We also find some evidence of short-range magnetic correlations associated with the Eu between 12 K≲ T≲ 30 K . Using the determined magnetic structures, we postulate the signs of nearest-neighbor intralayer and interlayer exchange constants and the magnetic anisotropy within a general Heisenberg model. We then discuss implications of the various AFM states in EuMnSb 2 and their potential for tuning topological properties.
