Electron exchange and nuclear symmetry for 2s and 2p collisional excitations of hydrogen by H atom based on symmetrized atomic orbitals set
Catalytic sensor operates in high-pressure, moisture-laden gases. It was developed for life support system in which water is decomposed by electrolysis to produce oxygen and hydrogen. Sensor has potential applications in gas-detection and measurement instruments, particularly for gases generated by electrolysis, because such gases may contain large amounts of moisture.
A nonthermal, or 'hot', Venus corona of H atoms has been observed by Mariners 5 and 10 and Venera 9. Of the sources investigated, reaction of H2 with ionospheric O(+) is still the strongest. It can explain the smaller densities but falls somewhat short of the largest (from Mariner 5). The subsequent recombination of OH(+), supplemented by solar-wind processes, may give an escape flux of 10 million atoms per sq cm/s. The low density of thermal H atoms on the day side has previously been attributed to either a large eddy diffusion coefficient or an escape flux tenfold greater than this. An alternative mechanism, suggested by Hartle and Mayr (1977) is supported: the hydrogen is swept to the night side by strong thermospheric winds. This process is analogous to the 'Johnson pump' for the terrestrial winter helium bulge. Large nightside bulges of H and H2 are predicted; the night/day density ratio is estimated to be as large as 100 for each.
Nickel-cadmium batteries, bipolar nickel-hydrogen batteries, and regenerative fuel cell storage subsystems were evaluated for use as the storage subsystem in a 37.5 kW power system for space station. Design requirements were set in order to establish a common baseline for comparison purposes. The storage subsystems were compared on the basis of effective energy density, round trip electrical efficiency, total subsystem weight and volume, and life.
The operation of a cryogenically-cooled hydrogen maser using an RF plasma dissociator operating at liquid nitrogen temperature (77K) in confunction with a state selector magnet whose dimensions are suitable for slow atoms is studied. The focusing characteristics for a hexapole state selector magnet with maximum fields at the pole tips, provide a maximum acceptance angle for atoms at the most probable velocity in the beam. By thermally isolating the RF circuitry from the dissociator glassware, only dielectric losses in the glass and the energy coupled to the plasma will result in the boil-off of liquid nitrogen. It is estimated that this is about one watt and thus a loss rate of approximately .022 liters pr hour is anticipated.
A mechanism is suggested for the excitation of electrostatic ion-cyclotron waves at frequencies below the ion-cyclotron frequency in the midst of the auroral acceleration region, which is assumed to consist of downward moving double layers. The mechanism involves upward flowing ions interacting with a downward flowing background plasma. The upward flowing ions are the ion beams accelerated by the double layer. The downward motion of the background plasma corresponds to a plasma expansion into the density cavity that develops in connection with double layer formation in the acceleration region. The ion-cyclotron waves excited by the counterstreaming flows are doppler shifted to frequencies below the harmonics of the ion cyclotron frequency. It is suggested that such wave emissions could account for some very narrow-banded waves at frequencies below the hydrogen cyclotron frequency that were observed by the S3-3 satellite.

An atmospheric pressure tubular opposed jet burner technique was used to characterize certain diffusion-flame transitions and associated burning rates for N2-diluted mixtures of highly-reactive fuels. Presented are: (1) details of the technique, with emphasis on features permitting the study of flames involving pyrophoric gases and particle-forming combustion reactions: (2) discoveries on the properties of these flames which correspond to physically and chemically distinct stages of silane and hydrogen combustion; and (3) unburnt gas velocity data obtained from flames based on SiH4-CH4-N2, SiH4-H2-N2, and H2-N2 fuel mixtures, and plotted as functions of combustible-fuel mole fraction and fuel/oxygen molar input flow ratios. In addition, these burning velocity results are analyzed and interpreted.

Recently, the near-infrared observations of the OH veneer on the lunar surface by the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) have been refined to constrain the OH content to 500-750 parts per million (ppm). The observations indicate diurnal variations in OH up to 200 ppm possibly linked to warmer surface temperatures at low latitude. We examine the M3 observations using a statistical mechanics approach to model the diffusion of implanted H in the lunar regolith. We present results from Monte Carlo simulations of the diffusion of implanted solar wind H atoms and the subsequently derived H and H2 exospheres.
