Rotating Detonation Engine Introduction [Webinar]

Turning a constant pressure combustor into a constant volume combustor changes it from a Brayton Cycle into a Humphrey Cycle. This allows it to extract more work from the fuel, increasing efficiency and reducing emissions. One way to create a constant volume combustor is by using a rotation detonation engine that introduces air and fuel continuously.

Introduction to Special Section: Machine Learning for Image-based Geologic Interpretation

Image-based geological interpretation has been a labor-intensive and time-consuming process because it requires well-trained geoscientists to identify geological structures, features, and textures from various types of images. These images include scanning electron microscopic images, optical microscopic images, optical photos, resistivity images, seismic volumes, remote-sensing images, etc. With fast-evolving machine learning (ML) technology and computing power in recent decades, computers can achieve nearhuman-level to super-human-level performance with scalable high efficiency in the computer vision field. These technological revolutions facilitated image-based geological interpretation in petroleum exploration and production. For example, a fault picking method applied to 3-D seismic volume data using deep learning can achieve superior performance in comparison to conventional auto-picking methods. In addition, under the new normal of low oil prices, the petroleum industry seeks cost-effective strategies such as automating traditionally labor-intensive processes. Nevertheless, the potential of applying ML to geological image interpretation is still facing a few key challenges including data scarcity, data distribution, poor data and/or label quality, data leakage, learning algorithms, model architecture, training methodologies, testing and evaluation metrics, hyper-parameters optimization, model drift, production deployment, and the like.

Deterministic Transport: An Introduction [Slides]

In this lecture, we cover deterministic particle transport. We focus on neutral particles (neutrons, gamma-rays, thermal photons). Our goal is to predictively and accurately model how free particles interact with their environments and properties of systems involving those particles.

Introduction to an MCGIDI Mini-App and Performance Comparisons with XSBench

In high-performance Monte Carlo (MC) radiation transport codes, cross section lookups often account for the majority of computational expens. In response to this observation, a number of nuclear data mini-apps have been developed to profile and optimize the lookup process. A review of these mini-apps can be found in Ref. In contrast to a fully fledged MC code, nuclear data mini-apps do not feature particle tracking; instead, the cross section lookup process is considered in isolation, a simplification that allows for easier implementation and evaluation of various lookup schemes and techniques. GIDI+, as described on its public repository1, is ...a collection of C++ libraries for accessing evaluated and processed nuclear data stored in the Generalized Nuclear Database Structure (GNDS). In addition to reading GNDS files, GIDI+ has functions to sum and collapse multi-group data as needed by deterministic transport codes, and to sample GNDS data as needed by Monte Carlo transport codes. Certain modes of Mercury, a LLNL-developed MC radiation transport code, utilize GIDI+ for cross section lookups. Specifically, Mercury uses the MCGIDI library contained within GIDI+ to perform lookups on GPUs. A mini-app exercising MCGIDI’s cross section lookup capabilities would prove useful for optimization, which in turn could improve the performance of client codes such as Mercury. Such a mini-app could also be used to assess the performance of MCGIDI compared to other nuclear data mini-apps. In this document, we introduce a nuclear data mini-app built with the MCGIDI library. The MCGIDI mini-app (MCGIDI-MA) was developed to closely resemble the methodology present in XSBench, a nuclear data mini-app developed at Argonne National Laboratory. The remainder of this section provides an overview on XSBench. Section 2 describes MCGIDI-MA and its usage. Section 3 contains performance results of MCGIDI-MA on LLNL’s Lassen and Quartz compute platforms, as well as comparisons to XSBench performance where appropriate. In Section 4, we present a summary of our findings.

Module 5: End Use Assessment - Lesson 5.1: Introduction to End Use Assessment [Slides]

End use assessment is the process of performing a technical evaluation of the stated end use in relation to the requested commodity and the activities of the end user. An end use assessment requires sufficiently detailed information on the procurement request, commodity technical specifications, end use conditions, end user business activities, industry norms and trends, and WMD or delivery system applications of stated end use. Reviewers should be aware of red flags related to end use assessment. Use best practices when writing an end use assessment. Be familiar with technical resources for end use assessments.

Research Introduction [Slides]

In the topic of Reverse Time Imaging, we proposed a new IC to reduce computation cost but reserve image resolution for distributed sensor networks. For Induced Seismicity in Oklahoma, we analyzed fault stress state analysis at state scale, and we applied machine learning techniques to polarity picking and seismicity rate forecasting. The results provide better understanding of fault properties, stress field, and the relationships among fault, stress state, injections, and potential seismic hazards. Lastly, for Microseismic Monitoring, we detected and located 770 low-frequency events (5-50 Hz): (1) Shallow events are highly clustered, consistent with the pathway from injection well 13-10A to monitoring well; moment tensor inversion shows dominant tensile cracking; (2) Deep events are scattered and show migration pattern to the basement; moment tensors show that most events are shear cracks.

Introduction to Graphics Processing Units [Slides]

Graphics Processing Units are designed for fast graphics processing. Graphics are a form of arithemetic and have gradually evolved a design that is also usefule for non-graphics computing. They are not standalone, but work alongside a CPU(host)-coprocessor.
