Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of new γ-Ba(CoV{sub 1-x}P{sub x}O{sub 4}){sub 2} x = 0.4–0.5

The phase composition of the system BaCo{sub 2}(VO{sub 4}){sub 2}–Ba(CoPO{sub 4}){sub 2} has been studied. At room temperature two miscibility gaps have been detected, with the formation of substitutional solid solutions Ba(CoV{sub 1-x}P{sub x}O{sub 4}){sub 2} for x = 0.4–0.5 basing on the γ-BCPO structure type. An increase in the vanadium cation concentration leads to the stabilization of the rhombohedral crystal lattice. The crystallographic characteristics of two new phosphate - vanadates Ba(CoV{sub 0.5}P{sub 0.5}O{sub 4}){sub 2} and Ba(CoV{sub 0.6}P{sub 0.4}O{sub 4}){sub 2} isostructural to γ-BCPO have been obtained, their crystal structures have been described, and their magnetic properties have been analyzed. It was shown that in α-BCPO, as distinct from other examined phases, a three-dimensional ferromagnetic ordering characterized by a wide hysteresis loop takes place at low temperatures. The enhanced values of the magnetic moment in the paramagnetic phase BaCo{sub 2}(VO{sub 4}){sub 2} and solid solutions based on γ-BCPO are attributed to the peculiarities of the crystal environment.

Magnetic properties of superparamagnetic, nanocrystalline cobalt ferrite thin films deposited at low temperature

Bulk cobalt ferrite, being a hard ferrite, shows high magnetization, high resistivity and high coercivity. If thin films of cobalt ferrite can be deposited at a low enough temperature and if its coercivity can be reduced, cobalt ferrite will make a very good candidate for use as a magnetic core of an integrated inductor in RF-CMOS ICs. Though polycrystalline and epitaxial thin films of cobalt ferrite have been made by various techniques, there are no reports of thin films of superparamagnetic cobalt ferrite. In this work, nanocrystalline cobalt ferrite thin films, which are superparamagnetic as deposited, have been prepared in the solution medium at ~190 °C, using microwave irradiation. The as-prepared films have a saturation magnetization (M S ) of 401 emu/cc and coercivity (H C ) of 19 Oe at room temperature for a crystallite size of 2 nm. The cobalt ferrite powder obtained as a by-product during the same process has M S of 50 emu/g and H C of 5 Oe at room temperature, making it superparamagnetic. The as-prepared films were annealed in air at 300 °C for 5 min and 10 min. Annealing for 10 min results in an increase in crystallite size to 36 nm, M S increases from 401 emu/cc to 545 emu/cc, and H C increases from 19 Oe to 860 Oe. In conclusion, the change in magnetic properties can be directly associated with change in the crystallite size and degree of crystallographic inversion, as determined by neutron diffraction and deduced from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Preparation Structure and Magnetic Properties of Mn-Doped ZnO Nanoparticles Prepared by Hydrothermal Method

In this research, manganese-doped ZnO (Zn{sub 0.99-x}Mn{sub x}O) nanoparticles were synthesized by hydrothermal method using the chemicals. The samples were annealed at 500 and 600 °C to figure out the optimum annealing temperature characterized by differential thermal analysis (DTA) method. Simultaneously with DTA analysis, the possible weight loss was observed by thermal gravimetric (TG) method and categorized the lost chemicals with varying temperature regions. The crystal structure with lattice parameters and the phases were determined by X-ray diffraction method. Microstrain (ε), stress (σ), the dislocation density (δ), the locality of the atoms and their displacements (u), and the bond length (L) values were calculated by making use of lattice parameters. The particle morphologies were monitored by scanning electron microscope (SEM) technique and the elemental compositions of the samples were investigated and found that all peaks belong to Zn, Mn, and O elements. The magnetic properties of the samples were revealed using Quantum design PPMS measurement system and correlated with structural properties.

Magnetic properties of the double trillium lattice antiferromagnet KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3

Trillium lattices formed by corner-shared triangular units are the platform for magnetic frustration in three dimensions. Herein, we report structural and magnetic properties of the Cr-based (S = 3/2) double trillium lattice material KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 studied by x-ray diffraction, dc and ac magnetization, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements complemented by density-functional band-structure calculations. Magnetization, heat capacity, and 31 P NMR measurements reveal the magnetic transition at T N⁢1 ≃ 12.5 K in zero field followed by another transition (T N⁢2 ) at low temperatures in weak applied fields. The 31 P spin-lattice relaxation rate in the ordered state follows the T 3 behavior indicative of the two-magnon Raman process. Finally, the spin lattice of KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 comprises two crystallographically nonequivalent ferromagnetic sublattices that are coupled antiferromagnetically, thus eliminating frustration in this trillium network and leading to weak ferromagnetism in the vicinity of T N⁢1 .

Interface depended electronic and magnetic properties of vertical CrI 3 /WSe 2 heterostructures

Owing to the great potential applications in information processing and storage, two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have recently attracted significant attention. Here, using first-principles calculations, we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of the van der Waals CrI 3 /WSe 2 heterostructures. We find that after forming heterostructures, monolayer CrI 3 undergoes a direct to indirect band gap transition and its gap size is greatly reduced. In particular, the out-plane spin quantization axis of monolayer CrI 3 is tuned into in-plane for most stacking configurations of CrI 3 /WSe 2 . We further reveal that the transition of the easy magnetization direction is mainly originated from the hybridization between Cr-d and Se-p orbitals. These theoretical results provide a useful picture for the electronic structure and magnetic anisotropy behaviors in vertical CrI 3 /WSe 2 heterostructures.

Microstructure and Hard Magnetic Properties of Sm 1-x Zr x (Fe,Co) 11.3-y Ti 0.7 By Ingots and Thick Melt-Spun Ribbons

Permanent magnets made from Sm(Fe,Co) 12 -based compounds are being actively pursued through nanostructuring and powder metallurgy. This study was aimed at the development of hard magnetic properties in bulk as-cast alloys and in melt-spun alloys for very low wheel speeds. Slower solidification rates and alloying with Zr promote the tetragonal ThMn 12 -type crystal structure, whereas higher solidification rates and alloying with B replace the ThMn 12 structure type with the TbCu 7 structure type. When introduced simultaneously, Zr and B dramatically reduce the alloy solidification rates required for both the refinement of the 1:12 crystallites and their replacement with the 1:7 phase. In bulk arc-melted alloys, this allowed for a microstructure of separated 1:12 crystallites 1–3 μm in size, although, because of the ferromagnetic nature of a minority phase, the coercivity of these fine-grained alloys reached only 0.73 kOe. A moderately accelerated solidification further refined the 1:12 crystallites and increased the coercivity; a Sm 0.7 Zr 0.4 (Fe,Co) 10.8 Ti 0.7 B 0.5 alloy exhibited a coercivity of 1.5 kOe and a maximum energy product of 3.4 MGOe when it was melt-spun into a 0.26-mm-thick ribbon. A more rapid solidification suppressed the 1:12 phase and after annealing at 800–850 °C, the alloys modified with Zr and B developed reasonably high coercivity and maximum energy product even when melt-spun at a wheel speed of 6 m/s. For the above-mentioned alloy, these values were 4.1 kOe and 7.8 MGOe, respectively. Further, a similarly processed very-Sm-lean Sm 0.5 Zr 0.6 (Fe,Co) 10.6 Ti 0.7 B 0.7 alloy exhibited a remanence of 8.8 kG and an energy product of 7.4 MGOe.

Anomalous magnetic properties of CaRuO3 probed by AC and DC magnetic measurements and by low Ti impurity doping

Calcium ruthenate (CaRuO3) is widely believed to be located close to a quantum critical point due to the strong non-Fermi-liquid behavior expressed in the temperature dependence of electronic transport, specific heat, optical conductivity, etc. However, the corresponding anomalous behavior, marking crossover temperature regimes in the magnetic response of CaRuO3, is still lacking. Here we report detailed AC and DC magnetic susceptibility measurements of CaRuO3 and CaR u0.97 Ti 0.03 O3. The AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of CaRuO3 show a slight dependence on the frequency of AC magnetic field below ∼40K, and an additional subtle change of curvature around 12 K. We interpret these results as a critical slowing down of spin fluctuations towards T = 0 K. We confirm these observations by magnetic measurements of CaRu0.97 Ti 0.03 O3, which show a pronounced magnetic response corresponding to the above temperatures.

Structural and magnetic properties of the CeCo 5 –CeZn 5 solid solution and potential improvements upon iron substitution

In an effort to create high-performance permanent magnets with reduced critical rare earth content, we explored the CeCo 5-x T x (T = transition metal or metalloid) family of compounds to investigate the effect of substitution on the material’s magnetic properties. In our exploration of the CeCo 5-x Zn x system, we discovered a continuous solid solution at 900 °C between the CeCo 5 and CeZn 5 binary phases with ferromagnetism existing from the CeCo 5 compound to the intermediate CeCo 2.75 Zn 2.25 compound. Single crystal studies were also conducted revealing a relatively large anisotropy field of 11.5 T at 300 K for Ce 0.96 Ta 0.04 Co 4.35 Zn 0.65 . Here, the addition of iron Ce 0.79 Ta 0.07 Co 3.77 Fe 0.89 Zn 0.47 yielded further increases in Curie temperature and saturation magnetization to 800 K and 85.5 emu/g, respectively.

The total and partial densities of state are calculated. The effect of concentration values in Zn{sub 1−x}V{sub x}O and Zn{sub 1−x−y}V{sub x}Ag{sub y}O are deduced. Moreover, the magnetic disorder local moment (DLM) and the total energy are obtained for different concentration values of doped and co-doped zinc oxide (ZnO).

The application of macroscopic flakes for Fe-6.5%Si bulk magnetics with superior magnetic properties

Inductors are used in power electronics to convert current to different frequency and voltage. They are used extensively from where power is generated all the way to electric vehicles and portable electronic devices. The soft magnetic materials used in the inductors is critical for the performance of the inductors. Currently, a majority of the inductor uses powder core. The use of powder is not ideal as the 3D granule powders generate large demagnetization field working against the applied field, resulting in reduced permeability and efficiency. In this paper, 2D flakes were used to replace the 3D granules as the feedstock for fabricating inductor core. The crystalline Fe-Si based crystalline soft magnetic material in the form of flakes approximately 0.1mm thick, 1mm long and 2mm wide were prepared via melt spinning. The flakes were then coated with insulating materials before compacted into a toroid. The effect of coating thickness and concentration on magnetic properties of the toroidal sample are studied. It was also found that the magnetic cores made by flakes surpass the cores made by same size powder with larger permeability and lower iron losses.

Static and dynamic magnetic properties of the spiin-$\frac{5}{2}$triangle lattice antiferromagnet Na 3 Fe(PO 4 ) 2 studied by 31 P NMR

We report 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements have been carried out to investigate the magnetic properties and spin dynamics of Fe 3+ (S = 5/2) spins in the two-dimensional triangular lattice (TL) compound Na 3 Fe(PO 4 ) 2 . The temperature (T) dependence of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates (1/T 1 ) shows a clear peak around Néel temperature, T N = 10.9 K, corresponding to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition. From the temperature dependence of NMR shift (K) above T N , an exchange coupling between Fe 3+ spins was estimated to be J/k B ≃ 1.9 K using the spin-5/2 Heisenberg isotropic-TL model. The temperature dependence of 1/T 1 T divided by the magnetic susceptibility (χ), 1/T 1 T χ , above T N proves the AFM nature of spin fluctuations below ~50 K in the paramagnetic state. In the magnetically ordered state below T N , the characteristic rectangular shape of the NMR spectra is observed, indicative of a commensurate AFM state in its ground state. The strong temperature dependence of 1/T 1 in the AFM state is well explained by the two-magnon (Raman) process of the spin waves in a 3D antiferromagnet with a spin-anisotropy energy gap of 5.7 K. The temperature dependence of sublattice magnetization is also well reproduced by the spin waves. Those results indicate that the magnetically ordered state of Na 3 Fe(PO 4 ) 2 is a conventional 3D AFM state, and no obvious spin frustration effects were detected in its ground state

Magnetic properties of CeM{sub 1.5}M’{sub 0.5}Ge{sub 4}O{sub 12} (M = Mn, Co; M’ = Ni, Cu)

Highlights: • marked composition dependence of magnetic structure. • metamagnetic transition in CeCo{sub 1.5}Cu{sub 0.5}Ge{sub 4}O{sub 12}. • neutron diffraction in an applied field. - Abstract: A study of the solid solutions CeM{sub 2-x}M’{sub x}Ge{sub 4}O{sub 12} (M = Mn, Co; M’ = Ni, Cu) by X-ray diffraction and magnetometry is described. For M = Co the introduction of Ni and Cu was possible for x ≤ 0.5; for M = Mn attempts to introduce Cu were unsuccessful but CeMn{sub 1.5}Ni{sub 0.5}GeO{sub 4} was obtained as a single phase. These compositions crystallise in the space group P4/nbm with a ~9.76, c ~4.85 Å. They all order antiferromagnetically with T{sub N}1.5 Ni{sub 1.5}Ge{sub 4}O{sub 12} and CeCo{sub 1.5}Cu{sub 0.5}Ge{sub 4}O{sub 12} were shown by neutron diffraction to be the same as those adopted by CeMn{sub 2}Ge{sub 4}O{sub 12} and CeCo{sub 2}Ge{sub 4}O{sub 12}, respectively. The in-field metamagnetic transition of the latter to a weakly ferromagnetic phase was shown to persist in the Cu-doped composition. The available data suggest that the anisotropy associated with the Co{sup 2+} cation plays a dominant role in determining the magnetic behaviour of these compounds.

Magnetic properties of intercalated quasi-2D Fe 3-x GeTe 2 van der Waals magnet

Among several well-known transition metal-based compounds, cleavable van der Waals (vdW) Fe 3-x GeTe 2 (FGT) magnet is a strong candidate for use in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic devices due to its strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, sizeable Curie temperature (T C ~154 K), and versatile magnetic character that is retained in the low-dimensional limit. While the T C remains far too low for practical applications, there has been a successful push toward improving it via external driving forces such as pressure, irradiation, and doping. Here we present experimental evidence of a room temperature (RT) ferromagnetic phase induced by the electrochemical intercalation of common tetrabutylammonium cations (TBA+) into quasi-2D FGT. We obtained Curie temperatures as high as 350 K with chemical and physical stability of the intercalated compound. The temperature-dependent Raman measurements, in combination with vdW-corrected ab initio calculations, suggest that charge transfer (electron doping) upon intercalation could lead to the observation of RT ferromagnetism. This work demonstrates that molecular intercalation is a viable route in realizing high-temperature vdW magnets in an inexpensive and reliable manner and has the potential to be extended to bilayer and few-layer vdW magnets.

Exploration of Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Ceria for Applications of Microwave Assisted Catalysis

This was presented at APS Global Physics Summit 2025 in Anaheim, CA. This study focuses on characterizing how vacancies and other dopants influence the electronic and magnetic properties of ceria and exploring the potential mechanisms by which these properties affect or control its catalytic behavior under microwave radiation. By examining ceria’s electronic response to external electromagnetic fields, specifically magnetic fields within the microwave range, the work aims to uncover insights into how microwaves might optimize catalytic effects. The study also includes a comparative analysis of different functionals to refine understanding of ceria’s electronic behavior and catalytic efficacy in these applications.

Magnetic Properties of Disordered Li{sub 2}Co{sub 2 – x}Ni{sub x}(MoO{sub 4}){sub 3} (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) System with a Lyonsite Structure

We report on the magnetic properties of disordered Li{sub 2}Co{sub 2 – x}Ni{sub x}(MoO{sub 4}){sub 3} (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) system with a lyonsite structure, where Li{sup +}, Ni{sup 2+}, and Co{sup 2+} ions are distributed in a disordered manner in the trigonal prism and octahedral sites. All compositions were found to exhibit paramagnetic behavior at high temperature; the magnetic susceptibility was described by the modified Curie-Weiss law. The experimental effective moments were explained by spin and orbital contributions of the Co{sup 2+} ions and only the spin contribution for Ni{sup 2+} ions. The negative Curie-Weiss temperature θ indicates the existence of antiferromagnetic coupling for all compositions. At low temperature, the compounds with Co{sup 2+} ions (x = 0, 1, 1.6, and 1.8) exhibit a weak ferromagnetic state below 4 K due to intrinsic canting of antiferromagnetically coupled lattices. The compound containing only Ni{sup 2+} ions, Li{sub 2}Ni{sub 2}(MoO{sub 4}){sub 3}, exhibits a pure antiferromagnetic behavior.

Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of Grain Refined Pr2Co14B Melt-Spun Ribbons

The correlation between the grain refining effect of TiC on the microstructure of Pr2Co14B melt-spun ribbons and the magnetic properties is presented in this study. TiC enabled greater control of microstructure both in the as-spun and heat treated Pr2Co14B, compared with the material without TiC. As a result, coercivity of the sample with TiC was nearly twice that of the sample without TiC. In addition to Pr2Co14B, two other phases were found in the sample with TiC: one rich in Co and the other having a composition near PrCo2. TiC was found near the grain boundaries and at triple junctions. Also no Ti or C was found in the matrix phase indicating extreme low solubility of the elements when both are present with Pr2Co14B. As expected, both the samples with and without TiC have similar anisotropy field but the presence of room temperature non-ferromagnetic phases (TiC and PrCo2), caused a small decrease in magnetization of the sample with TiC although the romance of the isotropic materials were comparable.
