Maintaining Grid Reliability: Lessons From Renewable Integration Studies

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other organizations have sponsored numerous research studies over the last two decades to examine the effect of increased wind and solar deployment on grid reliability, including a number of studies that examine grids deriving more than 50% of annual energy from wind and solar. In this report, we discuss key findings from both the research body of knowledge and real-world practice related to grid reliability, and we demonstrate how to plan for and achieve continued reliability in the future as wind and solar deployment increase.

Establishing and Maintaining Engagement for a Distributional Equity Analysis [Slides]

The Distributional Equity Analysis (DEA) is an analytical framework that allows for the evaluation of the distributional equity of utility resource investments in combination with benefit-cost analysis. This guide serves as a resource for organizations to develop an engagement strategy for a DEA that is accessible, inclusive, and grounded in community interests. It is organized by the guiding principles of engagement for a DEA, summarized in the figure on the right, and offers a compendium of resources for further support and learning.

Shielding the Quantum Realm: Technical Considerations for Maintaining a Stable and Secure Radio Frequency Environment for Quantum Research

Advancements in quantum technology, which include quantum computing, quantum sensing, quantum communications, and associated research, continue to revolutionize various fields of study by solving challenging problems deemed too difficult or more efficient than those used for classical computers. However, as these systems become ever so complex, it is critical to secure their electromagnetic operational environments and the associated impact on quantum systems and infrastructure. The goal of this synopsis is to bring attention to the susceptibility of quantum technology facilities to potential issues related to the radio frequency (RF) environment within the broader electromagnetic context. A framework is proposed for identifying, mitigating, monitoring, and auditing these often complex operational environments. By establishing best practices in the consideration and evaluation of these criteria, one can enhance the operational integrity, resilience, and security of quantum technology systems and facilities, thereby supporting their continued development and application in research and industry.

Designing Yield Grids for Airborne Nuclear Explosions to Maintain Decrements in Rayleigh Waveform Amplitudes

This document details a method for selecting grid points that sample the yields of airborne, low yield nuclear explosions that constrains the relative size of seismic waveforms sourced by explosions that are parameterized by this grid. In detail, we impose this constraint so that the vertical component of ground displacement that is sourced by explosions with a fixed height of burst (HoB) at grid point k change by a fixed factor of a when compared to the waveform amplitudes sourced by explosions at grid point k + 1, as observed at a fixed standoff distance. This gridding thereby preserves amplitude ratios along the grid so that they are agnostic to k. We assert that this method is useful in tests that apply algorithms against synthetic or augmented datasets for which the performance of the algorithm must be measured against source size, and waveform amplitudes must change uniformly (e.g., Berg et al, 2025).

Adaptive Cognitive Mechanisms to Maintain Calibrated Trust and Reliance in Automation

Trust calibration for a human–machine team is the process by which a human adjusts their expectations of the automation’s reliability and trustworthiness; adaptive support for trust calibration is needed to engender appropriate reliance on automation. Herein, we leverage an instance-based learning ACT-R cognitive model of decisions to obtain and rely on an automated assistant for visual search in a UAV interface. This cognitive model matches well with the human predictive power statistics measuring reliance decisions; we obtain from the model an internal estimate of automation reliability that mirrors human subjective ratings. The model is able to predict the effect of various potential disruptions, such as environmental changes or particular classes of adversarial intrusions on human trust in automation. Finally, we consider the use of model predictions to improve automation transparency that account for human cognitive biases in order to optimize the bidirectional interaction between human and machine through supporting trust calibration. The implications of our findings for the design of reliable and trustworthy automation are discussed.

Exploring the Interplay between Polyphenols and Lysyl Oxidase Enzymes for Maintaining Extracellular Matrix Homeostasis

Collagen, the most abundant structural protein found in mammals, plays a vital role as a constituent of the extracellular matrix (ECM) that surrounds cells. Collagen fibrils are strengthened through the formation of covalent cross-links, which involve complex enzymatic and non-enzymatic reactions. Lysyl oxidase (LOX) is responsible for catalyzing the oxidative deamination of lysine and hydroxylysine residues, resulting in the production of aldehydes, allysine, and hydroxyallysine. These intermediates undergo spontaneous condensation reactions, leading to the formation of immature cross-links, which are the initial step in the development of mature covalent cross-links. Additionally, non-enzymatic glycation contributes to the formation of abnormal cross-linking in collagen fibrils. During glycation, specific lysine and arginine residues in collagen are modified by reducing sugars, leading to the creation of Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs). These AGEs have been associated with changes in the mechanical properties of collagen fibers. Interestingly, various studies have reported that plant polyphenols possess amine oxidase-like activity and can act as potent inhibitors of protein glycation. This review article focuses on compiling the literature describing polyphenols with amine oxidase-like activity and antiglycation properties. Specifically, we explore the molecular mechanisms by which specific flavonoids impact or protect the normal collagen cross-linking process. Furthermore, we discuss how these dual activities can be harnessed to generate properly cross-linked collagen molecules, thereby promoting the stabilization of highly organized collagen fibrils.

Machine Learning Applications to Maintain the NuMI Neutrino Beam Quality at Fermilab

The NuMI target facility at Fermilab produces an intense muon neutrino beam for NOvA (NuMI Off-axis νe Appearance) long baseline neutrino experiment. Three arrays of muon monitors located in the downstream of the hadron absorber in the NuMI beamline provide the measurements of the primary beam and horn current quality. We have studied the response of muon monitors with the proton beam profile changes and focusing horn current variations. The responses of muon monitors are used to develop Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to monitor the beam quality. We present the development of the machine learning applications and the future plans. This effort is important for future applications such as beam quality assurance, anomaly detections, neutrino beam systematics studies and neutrino beam quality assurance. Our results demonstrate the advantages of developing useful ML applications that can be leveraged for future beamlines such as LBNF.

Performance of a Prototype Heliostat Having a Twisting Mechanism to Maintain Focus Throughout the Day

A prototype heliostat has been designed and built with a rectangular reflector whose shape is altered automatically through the day, to maximize concentration at the receiver. The shape changes needed to form solar disc images, which give the highest possible concentration, can be realized by twisting the reflector from its corners, provided that a target-oriented, dual-axis mount is used. Then a cam mechanism connected to the second (cross) axis drive, turning with the angle of incident sunlight, may be used to twist the reflector as needed. Our prototype reflector comprises a single glass mirror, 2.4 m x 3.3 m, attached to a steel frame. Four diagonal back struts extend from the central mechanism out to the rectangular frame corners. The glass mirror of the prototype is attached to the steel frame by 58 screw actuators. Before twisting the frame, the glass shape is adjusted to the biconic shape needed to form a 1 m diameter disc image on a 113 m distant target when sunlight is incident at 60°. To form disc images over the full range of angles of incidence from 0° (normal incidence) to 70°, the struts push the corners up and down by up to 17 mm. A reflectometry metrology system has been used to set the 58 adjustment screws for the initial shape to an accuracy of ≤ 0.6 mrad, and to measure the accuracy of the different twisted shapes. The prototype will be tested at NSTTF early next year.
