Gold-Standard Chemical Database 137 (GSCDB137): A Diverse Set of Accurate Energy Differences for Assessing and Developing Density Functionals

We present GSCDB137, a rigorously curated benchmark library of 137 data sets (8377 entries) covering main-group and transition-metal reaction energies and barrier heights, (intra- and intermolecular) noncovalent interactions, dipole moments, polarizabilities, electric-field response energies, and vibrational frequencies. Legacy data from GMTKN55 and MGCDB84 have been updated to today's best reference values; redundant or low-quality points were removed, and many new, property-focused sets were added. Testing 29 popular density functional approximations (DFAs) confirms the expected Jacob's-ladder hierarchy overall but also reveals notable exceptions: functional performance for frequencies and electric-field properties correlates poorly with that for other ground-state energetics. ωB97M-V and ωB97X-V are the most balanced hybrid meta-GGA and hybrid GGA, respectively; B97M-V and revPBE-D4 lead the meta-GGA and GGA classes. Double hybrids lower mean errors by about 30% versus their hybrid analogues but demand careful frozen-core, basis set, and spin contamination treatment. GSCDB137 offers a comprehensive, openly documented platform for rigorous validation of DFA and universal machine learning potentials, and training of the next generation of exchange-correlation functionals.

Azo(xy) vs Aniline Selectivity in Catalytic Nitroarene Reduction by Intermetallics: Experiments and Simulations

Intermetallic nanoparticles are promising catalysts in hydrogenation and fuel cell technologies. Much is known about the ability of intermetallic nanoparticles to selectively reduce nitro vs alkene, alcohol, or halide functional groups; less is known about their selectivity toward aniline vs azo or azoxy condensation products that result from the reduction of a nitro group alone. Because azo(xy)arenes bear promise as dyes, chemical stabilizers, and building blocks to functional materials but can be difficult to isolate, developing high surface area nanoparticle catalysts that display azo(xy) selectivity is desirable. To address this question, we studied a family of nanocrystalline group 10 metal (Pd, Pt)- and group 14 metal (Ge, Sn, Pb)-containing intermetallics-Pd 2 Ge, Pd 2 Sn, Pd 3 Sn 2 , Pd 3 Pb, and PtSn-in the catalytic reduction of nitroarenes. In contrast to monometallic Au, Pt, and Pd nanoparticles and "random" PdxSn1 – x nanoalloys, which are selective for aniline, nanoparticles of atomically precise intermetallic Pd 2 Ge, Pd 2 Sn, Pd 3 Sn 2 , and PtSn prefer an indirect condensation pathway and have a high selectivity for the azo(xy) products. The only exception is Pd 3 Pb, the most active among the intermetallic nanoparticles studied here, which is instead selective for aniline. Employing a novel application of molecular dynamics-based on machine learned potentials within a DeePMD framework-to heterogeneous catalysis, we are able to identify key reaction species on the different types of catalysts employed, furthering our understanding of the unique selectivity of these materials. By demonstrating how intermetallic nanoparticles can be as active yet more selective than other more traditional catalysts, this work provides new physical insights and opens new opportunities in the use of these materials in other important chemical transformations and applications.

Hydrogen Dynamics in Supercritical Water Probed by Neutron Scattering and Computer Simulations

In this work, an investigation of supercritical water is presented combining inelastic and deep inelastic neutron scattering experiments and molecular dynamics simulations based on a machine-learned potential of ab initio quality. The local hydrogen dynamics is investigated at 250 bar and in the temperature range of 553–823 K, covering the evolution from subcritical liquid to supercritical gas-like water. The evolution of libration, bending, and stretching motions in the vibrational density of states is studied, analyzing the spectral features by a mode decomposition. Moreover, the hydrogen nuclear momentum distribution is measured, and its anisotropy is probed experimentally. It is shown that hydrogen bonds survive up to the higher temperatures investigated, and we discuss our results in the framework of the coupling between intramolecular modes and intermolecular librations. Results show that the local potential affecting hydrogen becomes less anisotropic within the molecular plane in the supercritical phase, and we attribute this result to the presence of more distorted hydrogen bonds.

Nuclear Quantum Effects on the Electronic Structure of Water and Ice

The electronic properties and optical response of ice and water are intricately shaped by their molecular structure, including the quantum mechanical nature of the hydrogen atoms. Despite numerous previous studies, a comprehensive understanding of the nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) on the electronic structure of water and ice at finite temperatures remains elusive. Here, we utilize molecular simulations that harness efficient machine-learning potentials and many-body perturbation theory to assess how NQEs impact the electronic bands of water and hexagonal ice. By comparing path-integral and classical simulations, we find that NQEs lead to a larger renormalization of the fundamental gap of ice, compared to that of water, ultimately yielding similar bandgaps in the two systems, consistent with experimental estimates. Our calculations suggest that the increased quantum mechanical delocalization of protons in ice, relative to water, is a key factor leading to the enhancement of NQEs on the electronic structure of ice.

Elucidating Lithium Transport Mechanisms in Disordered LiF from Machine-Learning Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Lithium fluoride (LiF) is a ubiquitous component of solid- and cathode–electrolyte interphases, yet its functional role remains unclear under the structural and chemical heterogeneity typical of cycling batteries. Here, we systematically quantify how structural disorder, off-stoichiometry, and strain govern Li-ion transport in LiF. Using a machine-learning potential to enable extensive molecular-dynamics sampling, we compare crystalline and amorphous LiF, Li 0.95 F, and LiF 0.95 , and evaluate the impact of small homogeneous deformations. Defect-free crystalline LiF is effectively ion-blocking at 300−500 K, whereas amorphization generates free-volume–assisted percolation pathways that facilitates Li-ion diffusion. At elevated temperatures, thermodynamically driven crystallization disrupts these pathways, leading to non-Arrhenius behavior. In crystalline phases, Li deficiency activates vacancy-mediated diffusion, while in amorphous LiF, transport is governed primarily by network connectivity. Strain is found to have only a marginal effect on Li mobility in both crystalline and amorphous structures.

Cation Disorder of ${\text{Mg}}_{\mathbf{2}}{\text{SiO}}_{\mathbf{4}}$ in Super‐Earth Mantles

Understanding the mineralogy of exoplanets is essential for unraveling their interior structures, dynamics, and evolution. For large super-Earths, the post-post spinel ${\text{Mg}}_{\mathbf{2}}{\text{SiO}}_{\mathbf{4}}$, one of the major mantle phases, may undergo the order-disorder transition (ODT) at high temperatures. However, the ODT phase boundary of ${\text{Mg}}_{\mathbf{2}}{\text{SiO}}_{\mathbf{4}}$ has not been rigorously constrained. Additionally, fundamental thermodynamic properties of the disordered ${\text{Mg}}_{\mathbf{2}}{\text{SiO}}_{\mathbf{4}}$ remain poorly investigated. Here, we develop a unified machine learning potential (MLP) for ${\text{Mg}}_{\mathbf{2}}{\text{SiO}}_{\mathbf{4}}$ of ab initio accuracy under super-Earth mantle conditions. With the efficient MLP, we extensively calculate the free energy of post-post spinel ${\text{Mg}}_{\mathbf{2}}{\text{SiO}}_{\mathbf{4}}$ via the thermodynamic integration method. The results are used to constrain the ODT phase boundary. Furthermore, we report the P-V-T equation of state and Grüneisen parameters for post-post spinel ${\text{Mg}}_{\mathbf{2}}{\text{SiO}}_{\mathbf{4}}$ across various degrees of disorder. These thermodynamic properties are further applied to update the adiabatic thermal profiles and the mass-radius relation of super-Earths.

Thermodynamics of high-pressure ice phases explored with atomistic simulations

Most experimentally known high-pressure ice phases have a body-centred cubic (bcc) oxygen lattice. Our large-scale molecular-dynamics simulations with a machine-learning potential indicate that, amongst these bcc ice phases, ices VII, VII' and X are the same thermodynamic phase under different conditions, whereas superionic ice VII" has a first-order phase boundary with ice VII'. Moreover, at about 300 GPa, the transformation between ice X and the Pbcm phase has a sharp structural change but no apparent activation barrier, whilst at higher pressures the barrier gradually increases. Our study thus clarifies the phase behaviour of the high-pressure ices and reveals peculiar solid–solid transition mechanisms not known in other systems.

Molecular-scale insights into the electrical double layer at oxide-electrolyte interfaces

The electrical double layer (EDL) at metal oxide-electrolyte interfaces critically affects fundamental processes in water splitting, batteries, and corrosion. However, limitations in the microscopic-level understanding of the EDL have been a major bottleneck in controlling these interfacial processes. Herein, we use ab initio-based machine learning potential simulations incorporating long-range electrostatics to unravel the molecular-scale picture of the EDL at the prototypical anatase TiO 2 -electrolyte interface under various pH conditions. Our large-scale simulations, capable of capturing interfacial water dissociation/recombination reactions and electrolytic proton transport, provide unprecedented insights into the detailed structure of the EDL. Moreover, the larger capacitance of the EDL under basic relative to acidic conditions, originating from the higher affinity of the cations for the oxide surface, is found to give rise to distinct charging mechanisms on negative and positive surfaces. Our results are validated by the agreement between the computed EDL capacitance and experimental data.

Metastability and Ostwald step rule in the crystallisation of diamond and graphite from molten carbon

Abstract Experimental challenges in determining the phase diagram of carbon at temperatures and pressures near the graphite-diamond-liquid triple point are often related to the persistence of metastable crystalline or glassy phases, superheated crystals, or supercooled liquids. A deeper understanding of the crystallisation kinetics of diamond and graphite is crucial for effectively interpreting the outcomes of these experiments. Here, we reveal the microscopic mechanisms of diamond and graphite nucleation from liquid carbon through molecular simulations with first-principles machine learning potentials. Our simulations accurately reproduce the experimental phase diagram of carbon near the triple point and show that liquid carbon crystallises spontaneously upon cooling. Metastable graphite crystallises in the domain of diamond thermodynamic stability at pressures above the triple point. Furthermore, whereas diamond crystallises through a classical nucleation pathway, graphite follows a two-step process in which low-density fluctuations forego ordering. Calculations of the nucleation rates of the two competing phases confirm this result and reveal a manifestation of Ostwald’s step rule, where the strong metastability of graphite hinders the transformation to the stable diamond phase. Our results provide a key to interpreting melting and recrystallisation experiments and shed light on nucleation kinetics in polymorphic materials with deep metastable states.

Tandem bulk oxygen diffusion and surface reactions in reducible metal oxides control redox cycle dynamics

The interplay between bulk oxygen diffusion and surface reactions in reducible metal oxides is key in heterogeneous catalysts, but direct measurements of oxygen mobility, transient kinetics, and in situ spectroscopies have been lacking. Here, we reveal complex dynamic behavior of ceria-zirconia by H 2 using transient kinetics via mass spectrometry and in situ Raman and near-ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Molecular dynamics simulations with a machine learning potential delineate competitive oxygen diffusion mechanisms, with an optimal mobility at intermediate reductions. We expose a compensation between vacancy availability and lattice distortion at intermediate to high reductions and Frenkel defects at low reductions, underscoring a potential deficiency of 16 O/ 18 O exchange experiments in deducing oxygen mobility. Vacancies in proximity require electron localization on Ce atoms further away. The continuous replenishment of surface oxygen results in a varying reduction rate, with H 2 dissociation being the rate-limiting step. Multiscale transient simulations, consistent with experiments, indicate catalysts of potentially spatially varying oxidation states. The approach is broadly applicable to reducible oxide materials.

Million-scale data integrated deep neural network for phonon properties of heuslers spanning the periodic table

Existing machine learning potentials for predicting phonon properties of crystals are typically limited on a material-to-material basis, primarily due to the exponential scaling of model complexity with the number of atomic species. We address this bottleneck with the developed Elemental Spatial Density Neural Network Force Field, namely Elemental-SDNNFF. The effectiveness and precision of our Elemental-SDNNFF approach are demonstrated on 11,866 full, half, and quaternary Heusler structures spanning 55 elements in the periodic table by prediction of complete phonon properties. Self-improvement schemes including active learning and data augmentation techniques provide an abundant 9.4 million atomic data for training. Deep insight into predicted ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (<1 Wm –1 K –1 ) of 774 Heusler structures is gained by p–d orbital hybridization analysis. Additionally, a class of two-band charge-2 Weyl points, referred to as “double Weyl points”, are found in 68% and 87% of 1662 half and 1550 quaternary Heuslers, respectively.

The ab initio non-crystalline structure database: empowering machine learning to decode diffusivity

Non-crystalline materials exhibit unique properties that make them suitable for various applications in science and technology, ranging from optical and electronic devices and solid-state batteries to protective coatings. However, data-driven exploration and design of non-crystalline materials is hampered by the absence of a comprehensive database covering a broad chemical space. In this work, we present the largest computed non-crystalline structure database to date, generated from systematic and accurate ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations. We also show how the database can be used in simple machine-learning models to connect properties to composition and structure, here specifically targeting ionic conductivity. These models predict the Li-ion diffusivity with speed and accuracy, offering a cost-effective alternative to expensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, the process of computational quenching non-crystalline structures provides a unique sampling of out-of-equilibrium structures, energies, and force landscape, and we anticipate that the corresponding trajectories will inform future work in universal machine learning potentials, impacting design beyond that of non-crystalline materials. In addition, combining diffusion trajectories from our dataset with models that predict liquidus viscosity and melting temperature could be utilized to develop models for predicting glass-forming ability.

Quantum annealing-assisted lattice optimization

High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) have drawn great interest due to their exceptional properties compared to conventional materials. The configuration of HEA system is considered a key to their superior properties, but exhausting all possible configurations of atom coordinates and species to find the ground energy state is extremely challenging. In this work, we proposed a quantum annealing-assisted lattice optimization (QALO) algorithm, which is an active learning framework that integrates the Field-aware Factorization Machine (FFM) as the surrogate model for lattice energy prediction, Quantum Annealing (QA) as an optimizer and Machine Learning Potential (MLP) for ground truth energy calculation. By applying our algorithm to the NbMoTaW alloy, we reproduced the Nb depletion and W enrichment observed in bulk HEA. We found our optimized HEAs to have superior mechanical properties compared to the randomly generated alloy configurations. Our algorithm highlights the potential of quantum computing in materials design and discovery, laying a foundation for further exploring and optimizing structure-property relationships.

Solid-state NMR and theoretical studies illuminate lanthanum borohydride C–H borylation catalysts confined within a zeolite

Zeolite-supported single-site lanthanum borohydride catalyzes C–H borylation of hydrocarbons, while the related silica-supported complex is inactive under comparable conditions. The identical composition of support-La(BH 4 ) 2 (THF) 2 sites in the two materials implies that the support bestows underlying structural features onto La that are required for bond activation catalysis, yet the nature of these effects, which could include confinement effects and/or electronic modulation of the site itself, remains to be identified. We used solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations with machine-learning potentials (ML-MD) to analyze the electronic and steric effects imparted by the faujasite support on the precatalyst structure to correlate with catalytic activity. ML-MD simulations show that THF dissociates from La under the influence of confinement, leading to coordinatively unsaturated sites in the zeolite pores. Then, the La complex grafts on Brønsted acid sites (La BAS ) or isolated silanols (La SiO ) or remains physisorbed in the zeolite pores. Catalytic studies comparing compounds supported on faujasite zeolites containing or lacking BAS and/or silanols show that only the former complexes lead to active sites, ruling out confinement as the sole requirement for catalysis. The DFT calculations and ML-MD simulations also reveal that the surface-lanthanum coordination number is two (bidentate) for La BAS , with the metal center forming long, flexible bonds to two oxygen atoms bridging Si and Al, but only one oxygen atom (monodentate) for La SiO . The structure–activity relationship identifies confined, BAS-grafted species as active sites and provides important guidance for the design of enhanced atom-efficient catalysts.

Assessing density functionals for describing methane dissociative chemisorption on Pt(110)-(2×1) surface

In this work, we explore the suitability of several density functionals with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and beyond for describing the dissociative chemisorption of methane on the reconstructed Pt(110)-(2×1) surface. The bulk and surface structures of the metal, methane adsorption energy, and dissociation barrier are used to assess the functionals. A van der Waals corrected GGA functional (optPBE-vdW) and a metaGGA functional with van der Waals correction (MS PBEl-rVV10) are selected for ab initio molecular dynamics calculations of the sticking probability. Our results suggest that the use of these two functionals may lead to a better agreement with existing experimental results, thus serving as a good starting point for future development of reliable machine-learned potential energy surfaces for the dissociation of methane on the Pt(110)-(2×1) surface.

Dehydration-Driven Ion Aggregation and the Onset of Gelation in ZnCl2 Solution

A minimal model of ionic aggregation in concentrated ZnCl2 is developed, guided by molecular dynamics simulations with a machine-learned potential. It explicitly incorporates solvent-site depletion, correlated chloride binding, and allows for loops within Zn–Cl clusters. Dehydration drives two coordination-controlled structural changes: a crossover at Z=2 from predominantly isolated Zn-containing species to Cl-bridged clusters and the onset of gelation near Z≈3. The model reproduces the concentration-dependent trends observed in the molecular dynamics simulations with two fitted parameters, while the cluster-size distribution at the highest concentration is consistent with three-dimensional percolation scaling over the accessible range of cluster sizes.
