Analysis of aromatic polyamine mixtures for formulation of LARC-160 resin

An investigation was conducted to identify a potential substitute for the aromatic polyamine mixture, Jeffamine AP-22, currently used to formulate LARC-160 polyimide precursor resin. Jeffamine AP-22 was characterized by high pressure liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Eleven different aromatic amines in the mixture were isolated and identified. Subsequent liquid chromatographic analysis of nine additional commercially available aromatic polyamine mixtures identified three candidates that are similar in composition to AP-22.

Solidification phenomena of binary organic mixtures

The coalescence rates and motion of liquid bubbles in binary organic mixtures were studied. Several factors such as temperature gradient, composition gradient, interfacial tension, and densities of the two phases play important roles in separation of phases of immiscible liquids. An attempt was made to study the effect of initial compositions on separation rates of well-dispersed organic mixtures at different temperatures and, ultimately, on the homogeneity of solidification of the immiscible binary organic liquids. These organic mixtures serve as models for metallic pseudo binary systems under study. Two specific systems were investigated: ethyl salicylate - diethyl glycol and succinonitrile - water.

Irradiation of NH3-CH4 mixtures as a model of photochemical processes in the Jovian planets and Titan

The reactions occurring upon the ultraviolet irradiation of ammonia-methane mixtures are investigated in a simulation of the atmospheric chemistry of the Jovian planets and Titan. Gas mixtures were irradiated at 185 nm at temperatures from 156-298 K, and product and reactant concentrations were determined by means of gas chromatography. The ratio of the moles of CH4 lost per mole of NH3 decomposed is found to be 0.25, with the extent of CH4 decomposition independent of temperature. The absence of a temperature effect suggests that nonthermal atoms, probably hydrogen, initiate CH4 decomposition by the extraction of a hydrogen atom. A decrease in CH4 loss with increasing pressure or the addition of other gases to the photolysis mixture, and the lack of an increase in NH3 photolysis with CH4 pressure support this mechanism. Major reaction products obtained include C2H2, C3H8 or CH3NH2, and C4H10. Considerations of atmospheric concentrations of H2 and He indicate that NH3 photolysis does not contribute to CH4 decomposition on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, although it may have had a role in the formation of the Titan atmosphere.

Application of strong fluctuation random medium theory to scattering of electromagnetic waves from a half-space of dielectric mixture

The strong fluctuation random medium theory is applied to calculate scattering from a half-space of dielectric mixture. The first and second moments of the fields are calculated, respectively, by using the bilocal and the distorted Born approximations, and the low frequency limit is taken. The singularity of the dyadic Green's function is taken into account. Expressions for the effective permittivity for the full space case are derived. It is shown that the derived result of the effect permittivity is identical to that of the Polder and van Santern mixing formula. The correlation function of the random medium is obtained by using simple physical arguments and is expressed in terms of the fractional volumes and particle sizes of the constituents of the mixture. Backscattering coefficients of a half-space dielectric mixture are also calculated. Numerical results of the effective permittivity and backscattering coefficients are illustrated using typical parameters encountered in microwave remote sensing of dry and wet snow. It is also shown that experimental data can be matched with the theory by using physical parameters of the medium as obtained from ground truth measurements.

Lean-limit extinction of propane/air mixtures in the stagnation-point flow

The extinction limits of lean propane/air mixtures in the stagnation-point flow of a flat surface were mapped as functions of the surface temperature and the mixture concentration, velocity, and temperature. The maximum flame temperatures and the flame locations were also measured. The results show that the extinction limits are extremely insensitive to the nature of the surface, which can be heated to 1000 C. On the other hand preheating the gas mixture increases the flame temperature by an almost equal amount and therefore significantly extends the extinction limits. It is also found that at extinction the maximum flame temperatures and the flame locations, which when scaled with the velocity gradient, assume almost constant values independent of the other system variables investigated.

Ignition of confined gaseous mixtures by hot surfaces and hot wires

Ignition times and spatial and temporal variations of temperature and concentration in gaseous mixtures confined between two infinite parallel walls or two infinite cylinders have been obtained by numerical integration of the appropriate conservation equations written in Lagrangian coordinates. Ignition times and ignition energies are presented for the case of an isothermal wall in terms of the initial mixture pressure and equivalence ratio for both one and two-step chemical reaction mechanisms. The numerical results indicate that there is a critical mixture pressure for which the ignition time is minimum. The values of this critical pressure are larger (smaller) than 1 atm for the one- (two-) step reaction mechanism. The critical pressure for the ignition time is not equal to the critical pressure for the ignition energy. The ignition time and energy decrease with the equivalence ratio within a certain range and then remain constant.

A semiempirical method for analysis of the reflectance spectra of binary mineral mixtures

A simple semiempirical method is presented for determination of the spectral reflectance of a powdered binary mineral mixture. This technique uses a two-stream radiative transfer model (a modified Kubelka-Munk model) on a particulate medium of isotroic scatterers The particles are assumed to be much larger than the wavelength of light under consideration. This same method can be used to determine the relative proportion of components in a mixture for which the spectral reflectance is known. Binary mixtures of olivine, two pyroxenes, and magnetite are used to test this model. The theoretical and empirical results agree approximately within experimental errors.

Forced convection heat transfer to air/water vapor mixtures

Heat transfer coefficients were measured using both dry and humid air in the same forced convection cooling scheme and were compared using appropriate nondimensional parameters (Nusselt, Prandtl and Reynolds numbers). A forced convection scheme with a complex flow field, two dimensional arrays of circular jets with crossflow, was utilized with humidity ratios (mass ratio of water vapor to air) up to 0.23. The dynamic viscosity, thermal conductivity and specific heat of air, steam and air/steam mixtures are examined. Methods for determining gaseous mixture properties from the properties of their pure components are reviewed as well as methods for determining these properties with good confidence. The need for more experimentally determined property data for humid air is discussed. It is concluded that dimensionless forms of forced convection heat transfer data and empirical correlations based on measurements with dry air may be applied to conditions involving humid air with the same confidence as for the dry air case itself, provided that the thermophysical properties of the humid air mixtures are known with the same confidence as their dry air counterparts.

Flame propagation in heterogeneous mixtures of fuel drops and air

Photographic methods are used to measure flame speeds in flowing mixtures of fuel props and air at atmospheric pressure. The fuels employed include a conventional fuel oil plus various blends JP 7 with stocks containing single-ring and mullti-ring aromatics. The results for stoichiometric mixtures show that flame propagation cannot occur in mixtures containing mean drop sizes larger than 300 to 400 microns, depending on the fuel type. For smaller drop sizes, down to around 60 microns, flame speed is inversely proportional to drop size, indicating that evaporation rates are limiting to flame speed. Below around 60 microns, the curves of flame speed versus mean drop size flatten out, thereby demonstrating that for finely atomized sprays flame speeds are much less dependent on evaporation rates, and are governed primarily by mixing and/or chemical reaction rates. The fuels exhibiting the highest flame speeds are those containing multi-ring aromatics. This is attributed to the higher radiative heat flux emanating from their soot-bearing flames which enhances the rate of evaporation of the fuel drops approaching the flame front.

Theoretical study of miscibility and glass-forming trends in mixtures of polystyrene spheres

A theoretical study of glass-forming trends and miscibility in mixtures of polystyrene spheres (polyballs) of different diameters, suspended in an aqueous solution, is presented. The polyballs are assumed to be charged and to interact via a Debye-Hueckel screened Coulomb potential. The Helmholtz free energy is calculated from a variational principle based on the Gibbs-Bogoliubov inequality, in which a mixture of hard spheres of different diameters is chosen as the reference system. It is found that when the charges of the two types of polyballs are sufficiently different, the variationally determined ratio of hard-sphere diameters differs substantially, leading to packing difficulties characteristic of glass formation. The experimentally observed range of glass formation corresponds to a ratio of hard-sphere diameters of 0.8 or less. Calculations of the free energy as a function of concentration indicate that the liquid polyball mixture is stable against the phase separation, even for widely different polyball charges.

The liquid-vapor interface of a binary liquid mixture near the consolute point

The present investigation is concerned with measurements of the reflectance of polarized light by the liquid-vapor interface above liquid mixtures of a fluorocarbon and an alcohol in the vicinity of the consolute point of the liquid mixture. The denser fluorocarbon is preferentially adsorbed at the interface. The denser fluorocarbon is preferentially adsorbed at the interface. The data are consistent with a simple model of the dielectric constant vs height profile in the interface region. Liquid mixtures of isopropanol (i-C3H7OH) and perfluoromethylcyclohexane (C7F14) near their consolute point (Tc = 363 K) are utilized in the conducted experiments. The primary quantity measured is the ellipticity as a function of temperature and liquid composition. Attention is given to details regarding the experimental techniques, model dielectric constant profiles, and the calculation of the ellipticity.

Thermodynamic Calculations for Complex Chemical Mixtures

General computer program, CECTRP, developed for calculation of thermodynamic properties of complex mixtures with option to calculate transport properties of these mixtures. Free-energy minimization technique used in equilibrium calculation. Rigorous equations used in transport calculations. Program calculates equilibrium compositions and corresponding thermodynamic and transport properties of mixtures. CECTRP accommodates up to 24 reactants, 20 elements, and 600 products, 400 of which are condensed. Written in FORTRAN IV for any large computer system.

Supersonic combustion of a silane/methane mixture

A test program was conducted to evaluate the ignition and combustion characteristics of a 20 volume percent silane/methane mixture using a model scramjet combustor with Mach 2 combustor entrance conditions. The test gas total temperature was varied from 1200 to 3900 R. The mixture autoignited at a total temperature of 1650 R. This autoignition temperature can be contrasted with 2330 R for hydrogen and 1350 R for a 20 percent silane/hydrogen mixture in similar hardware. Methane without the silane additive did not autoignite in this configuration at temperatures as high as 3900 R.

Statistical mechanics of light elements at high pressure. VIII - Thomas-Fermi-Dirac theory for binary mixtures of H with He, C, and O

We present three-dimensional Thomas-Fermi-Dirac calculations of lattice mixing energies of hydrogen with carbon and oxygen atoms, respectively. The results are used to derive effective interatomic potentials for use in liquid-state mixture calculations. We then use the potentials to derive analytic expressions for binary mixture-free energies and to map out the phase diagrams of mixtures of hydrogen with, respectively, helium, carbon, and oxygen, over a pressure range of about 5 to about 10 to the 3rd Mbar. Within this pressure range, all three of the latter elements are found to have unlimited solubility in metallic hydrogen over a temperature range which lies above their pure-element melting temperatures, and which includes likely interior temperatures in the Jovian planets.

Dynamics of binary phase separation in liquid He-3-He-4 mixtures

Binary phase-separation dynamics in liquid mixtures of He-3 and He-4 has been investigated near the tricritical point with laser-light scattering techniques. Rapid decompression of the mixtures results in quenches into the miscibility gap so that both the metastable and unstable (spinodal) regions can be probed. Quenches into the unstable region allowed measurements of the normalized dynamic structure factor S(k,t) that confirm the dynamical scaling hypotheses for spinodal decomposition. Measurements made for concentrations well away from the tricritical value show different behavior and suggest the presence of a spinodal boundary. Forward scattering intensities for shallow quenches probe nucleation phenomena and permit quantitative measurements of anomalous super-cooling as a function of quench rate. Comparisons with data in organic binary mixtures are given.

Kinetic model for the vibrational energy exchange in flowing molecular gas mixtures

The present study is concerned with the development of a computational model for the description of the vibrational energy exchange in flowing gas mixtures, taking into account a given number of energy levels for each vibrational degree of freedom. It is possible to select an arbitrary number of energy levels. The presented model uses values in the range from 10 to approximately 40. The distribution of energy with respect to these levels can differ from the equilibrium distribution. The kinetic model developed can be employed for arbitrary gaseous mixtures with an arbitrary number of vibrational degrees of freedom for each type of gas. The application of the model to CO2-H2ON2-O2-He mixtures is discussed. The obtained relations can be utilized in a study of the suitability of radiation-related transitional processes, involving the CO2 molecule, for laser applications. It is found that the computational results provided by the model agree very well with experimental data obtained for a CO2 laser. Possibilities for the activation of a 16-micron and 14-micron laser are considered.

Low power DC arcjet operation with hydrogen/nitrogen/ammonia mixtures

The effect of gas composition and ambient pressure on arcjet operation was determined. Arcjet operation in different facilities was also compared to determine the validity of tests in small facilities. Volt-ampere characteristics were determined for an arcjet using hydrogen/nitrogen mixtures (simulating both ammonia and hydrazine), hydrogen/nitrogen/ammonia mixtures, and pure ammonia as propellants at various flow rates. The arcjet had a typical performance of 450 sec specific impulse at 1 kW with hydrogen/nitrogen mixures. It was determined that the amount of ammonia present in the gas stream had a significant effect on the arcjet volt-ampere characteristics. Also, hydrogen/nitrogen mixtures simulating ammonia gave arc characteristics approximately the same as those of pure ammonia. Finally, no differences in arc volt-ampere characteristics were seen between low and high ambient pressure operation in the same facility. A 3 to 5 V difference was seen when different facilities were compared, but this difference was probably due to differences in the voltage drops across the current connections, and not due to arcjet operational differences in the two facilities.

Calibrations of phase abundance, composition, and particle size distribution for olivine-orthopyroxene mixtures from reflectance spectra

An analytical method for quantifying the characteristics (phase abundances, phase composition, and grain size) of an olivine-orthopyroxene mixture from reflectance spectra is described. The spectral parameters related to reflectance, wavelength position, and albedo are investigated; the absorption bands for the olivine-orthopyroxene mixture is also studied. Primary calibrations useful for the determination of the olivine-orthopyroxene mixture characteristics are examined.
