The LHCb Collaboration measures production of the exotic hadron χ c 1 ( 3872 ) in proton-nucleus collisions for the first time. Comparison with the charmonium state ψ ( 2 S ) suggests that the exotic χ c 1 ( 3872 ) experiences different dynamics in the nuclear medium than conventional hadrons, and comparison with data from proton-proton collisions indicates that the presence of the nucleus may modify χ c 1 ( 3872 ) production rates. This is the first measurement of the nuclear modification factor of an exotic hadron. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

The production of $\Xi (1321)^{-}$ and $\overline{\Xi }(1321)^{+}$ hyperons in inelastic $p+p$ interactions is studied in a fixed target experiment at a beam momentum of 158 $\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$. Double differential distributions in rapidity ${y}$ and transverse momentum $p_{T}$ are obtained from a sample of 33M inelastic events. They allow to extrapolate the spectra to full phase space and to determine the mean multiplicity of both ${\Xi }{^-}$ and $\overline{\Xi }{^+} $. The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra are compared to transport model predictions. The ${\Xi }{^-} $ mean multiplicity in inelastic $p+p$ interactions at 158 $\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$ is used to quantify the strangeness enhancement in A+A collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair.
Double-differential yields of ${\Xi \left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $ and ${\overline{\Xi }\left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $ resonances produced in p+p interactions were measured at a laboratory beam momentum of 158 $\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$. This measurement is the first of its kind in p+p interactions below LHC energies. It was performed at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE collaboration. Double-differential distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum were obtained from a sample of $26\times 10^6$ inelastic events. The spectra are extrapolated to full phase space resulting in mean multiplicity of ${\Xi \left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $ ($6.73 \pm 0.25\pm 0.67)\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\overline{\Xi }\left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $ ($2.71 \pm 0.18\pm 0.18)\times 10^{-4}$. The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra and mean multiplicities were compared to predictions of string-hadronic and statistical model calculations.
The interpretation of cosmic antiproton flux measurements from space-borne experiments is currently limited by the knowledge of the antiproton production cross-section in collisions between primary cosmic rays and the interstellar medium. Using collisions of protons with an energy of 6.5 TeV incident on helium nuclei at rest in the proximity of the interaction region of the LHCb experiment, the ratio of antiprotons originating from antihyperon decays to prompt production is measured for antiproton momenta between 12 and 110 GeV/c. The dominant antihyperon contribution, namely ${\overline{\varLambda }} \rightarrow {\overline{{p}}} {{\pi } ^+}$ decays from promptly produced $\overline{\varLambda }$ particles, is also exclusively measured. The results complement the measurement of prompt antiproton production obtained from the same data sample. At the energy scale of this measurement, the antihyperon contributions to antiproton production are observed to be significantly larger than predictions of commonly used hadronic production models.
We present a method for ordering two-nucleon interactions based upon their scaling with the number of QCD colors, N c , in the limit that N c becomes large. Available data in the two-nucleon sector show general agreement with this ordering, indicating that the method may be useful in other contexts where data are less readily available. However, several caveats and potential pitfalls can make the large-N c ordering fragile and/or vulnerable to misinterpretation. We discuss the application of the large-N c analysis to two- and three-nucleon interactions, including those originating from weak and BSM (beyond the Standard Model) interactions, as well as two-nucleon external currents. Finally, we discuss some open questions in the field.
A neural network for segmenting and processing Lorentz TEM images of skyrmion lattices. This software based on U-Net architecture is capable of identifying skyrmions in out-of-focus Lorentz TEM images based on training data. This isspecifically useful for analyzing large area data from in-situ experiments.
The STAR Collaboration reports measurements of back-to-back azimuthal correlations of di- \pi^0 π 0 produced at forward pseudorapidity ( 2.6<\eta<4.0 2.6 < η < 4.0 ) in p+ p + p p , p+ p + \mathrm{Al} A l and p+ p + \mathrm{Au} A u collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair of 200 GeV. A clear suppression of the correlated away-side yields is observed in p+ p + \mathrm{Au} A u and for the first time in p+ p + \mathrm{Al} A l collisions, compared with the p p + + p p data. The enhanced suppression found in p+ p + \mathrm{Au} A u with respect to p+ p + \mathrm{Al} A l collisions exhibits the saturation scale ( Q_s^2 Q s 2 ) dependence on the mass number A A . The observed suppression of back-to-back pairs as a function of event activity and transverse momentum points to non-linear gluon dynamics arising at high parton densities.

Heavy-flavor jets, which are initiated from heavy quarks, are ideal probes for studying flavor dependent parton energy loss. We report on the performance of jet flavor tagging using two Neural Network Machine Learning (ML) models: the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model and an Attention-based Neural Network, in simulations of 200 GeV p + p collisions. The tagging performance of bottom quark initiated jets with both ML models surpasses that of the traditional cut-based method. Technical details, including sample and kinematic variable selections, the machine learning training and testing setup with parameter tuning, and outcome comparisons, will be discussed.
Energy loss of quarks in the hot and dense medium has been studied for decades. Both the experimental and theoretical efforts have hinted that the energy loss is quark mass dependent. Although experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have found that the electrons from heavy quarks are less or similarly suppressed compared to the light hadrons, the mass ordering of the suppression between charm and bottom quarks is not yet clear due to large experimental uncertainties. We have fully exploited the events recorded at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC to study the invariant yield of electrons from open heavy flavors. Latest results on the nuclear modification factors for charm and bottom separated heavy flavor electrons are reviewed in this proceeding. The implications of these results on the understanding of the quark mass and medium size dependence of the energy loss are also discussed.
Lattice QCD calculations of two-nucleon interactions have been underway for about a decade, but still haven't reached the pion mass regime necessary for matching onto effective field theories and extrapolating to the physical point. Furthermore, results from different methods, including the use of the Lüscher formalism with different types of operators, as well as the HALQCD potential method, do not agree even qualitatively at very heavy pion mass. We investigate the role that different operators employed in the literature may play on the extraction of spectra for use within the Lüscher method. We first explore expectations from Effective Field Theory solved within a finite volume, for which the exact spectrum may be computed given different physical scenarios. We then present preliminary lattice QCD results for two-nucleon spectra calculated using different operators on a common lattice ensemble.

The STAR Collaboration presents measurements of semi-inclusive distributions of charged jets recoiling from high transverse energy ($E_T$) direct photon and $π^0$ triggers in $p+p$ and central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{sNN}$=200 GeV. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-$k_T$ algorithm with jet resolution parameters R=0.2 and 0.5. The large uncorrelated background in central Au+Au collisions is corrected using a mixed-event technique. This enables a jet measurement extending to low transverse momentum and large R with well-controlled systematic uncertainties. We present measurements of the jet R dependence of suppression, intra-jet broadening, and acoplanarity of $π^0$+jet and $γ_{dir}$+jet for trigger $E_T (E_{T}^{trig})$ between 9–20 GeV.
