Measurement of $d^2 \sigma/d|\vec{q}|d E_{avail}$ and 2p2h contribution using charged current $\nu_\mu$ interactions in the NOvA Near Detector

This Thesis presents the analysis methods and measurement of the $d^2 \sigma/d|\vec{q}|d E_{avail}$-CC inclusive cross section that describes neutrino scattering in a predominantly hydrocarbon medium. Studies that are prerequisite for the analysis including, variable determinations, event selections, efficiency, purity determinations, and systematic uncertainty estimations, are summarized. Tests of the analysis are also detailed, and shown to reproduce the input distributions. The double-differential cross-section measurement provides the foundation for determination of the inclusive rate for the excess induced by 2p2h processes together with nuclear medium effects that are not described by the Fermi gas model. The methodology for the extraction of this rate, defined as the excess observed relative to the rate estimated for known single-nucleon interactions, is described in detail. The following new measurements are reported in this Thesis: (1) The $\nu_\mu-$CC inclusive double-differential cross section as a function of three-momentum transfer and available hadronic energy, for an average $E_\nu$ of 1.8 GeV, is obtained. The double-differential cross section value that obtains when the bin widths are taken to be the dimensions of the entire analysis domain, e.g. $0.2 \le |\vec{q}| \le 2.0 GeV/c$ and $0.0 \le E_{avail} \le 2.0$ GeV, is inclusive cross section is $(6.05 \pm 0.75)\times10^{-39}$ cm$^2$/GeV/GeV/$c$/nucleon. An event excess attributed to 2p2h-MEC processes is observed; most of the rate occurs in a contiguous phase space region $0.3 \le |\vec{q}| \le 1.0$ GeV$/c$ $0.0 \le E_{avail} \le 0.35$ GeV. This rate represents $12.0\pm 6.5\%$ of the observed CC inclusive cross section; its cross section ratio relative to CCQE scattering is estimated to be $44.3 \pm 23.9\%$.

Standard and Non-Standard Neutrino Oscillations at the NOvA Experiment

Initially believed to be massless, the discovery of neutrino oscillations proved that neutrinos have masses, a feature not anticipated by the Standard Model of Elementary Particles. Investigations of the existence of the so-called physics Beyond the Standard Model is a subject of active effort in the field of particle physics. Interactions of neutrinos with matter are well described by the Standard Model, however in the presence of new physics our knowledge and ability to measure the standard neutrino oscillation parameters may be affected. Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) may arise as a subleading effect to the neutrino oscillation framework by introducing additional parameters resulting from a generalized matter potential.

Study of neutrino oscillations and flux systematics in the NOvA experiment at Fermilab

The Standard Model of particle physics explains many experimental results using three generations of quarks, leptons, and their interactions, but fails to account for phenomena such as neutrino masses, matter-antimatter asymmetry, gravity, and the hierarchy problem. The study of neutrinos, especially neutrino oscillations, is crucial for advancing Beyond the Standard Model physics and the future of particle physics.newline

Measurement of Electron Neutrino and Antineutrino Appearance with the NO{$\nu$}A Experiment

As a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, the NuMI Off-axis $\nu_e$ Appearance (NOvA) experiment aims at studying neutrino physics by measuring neutrino oscillation parameters using the neutrino flux from the Main Injector (NuMI) beam. It has two functionally identical detectors. The near detector is onsite at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The far detector is 810 km away from the source of neutrinos and antineutrinos, at Ash River, Minnesota. At the near detector, muon neutrinos or antineutrinos, before significant oscillations take place, are used to correct the Monte Carlo simulation. At the far detector, the neutrino and antineutrino fluxes after significant oscillations have happened are measured and analyzed to study neutrino oscillation. The NOvA experiment is sensitive to the values of $\sin^2{\theta_{23}}$, $\Delta m^2_{32}$, and $\delta_{CP}$. The latest values from the NOvA 2020 analysis are as follows: $\sin^2{\theta_{23}}= 0.57^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$, $\Delta m^2_{32} = (2.41 \pm 0.07)\times 10^{-3}$\,eV$^2/c^4$, and $\delta_{CP}=0.82\pi$ with a wide 1$\sigma$ interval of uncertainty. My study is focused on the neutrino oscillation analysis with NOvA, including detector light model tuning, particle classification with convolutional neural network, electron neutrino and antineutrino energy reconstruction, and oscillation background estimation. Most of my studies have been used in the latest NOvA publication and the NOvA 2020 analysis.

Shell-model studies of the astrophysical r p -process reactions S 34 ( p , γ ) Cl 35 and Cl 34 g , m ( p , γ ) Ar 35

Background: Dust grains condensed in the outflows of presolar classical novae should have been present in the protosolar nebula. Candidates for such presolar nova grains have been found in primitive meteorites and can in principle be identified by their isotopic ratios, but the ratios predicted by state-of-the-art one-dimensional hydrodynamic models are uncertain due to nuclear-physics uncertainties. Purpose: To theoretically calculate the thermonuclear rates and uncertainties of the S 34 ( p , γ ) Cl 35 and Cl 34 g , m ( p , γ ) Ar 35 reactions and investigate their impacts on the predicted 34 S/ 32 S isotopic ratio for presolar nova grains. Method: A shell-model approach in a (0 +1 ) ℏ ω model space was used to calculate the properties of resonances in the 34 S(p ,γ ) 35 Cl and 34 g,m Cl (p ,γ ) 35 Ar reactions and their thermonuclear rates. Uncertainties were estimated using a Monte Carlo method. The implications of these rates and their uncertainties on sulfur isotopic nova yields were investigated using a postprocessing nucleosynthesis code. The rates for transitions from the ground state of 34 Cl as well as from the isomeric first excited state of 34 Cl were explicitly calculated. Results: At energies in the resonance region near the proton-emission threshold, many negative-parity states appear. Energies, spectroscopic factors, and proton-decay widths are reported. The resulting thermonuclear rates are compared with previous determinations. Conclusions: The shell-model calculations alone are sufficient to constrain the variation of the 34 S/ 32 S ratios to within about 30%. Uncertainties associated with other reactions must also be considered, but in general we find that the 34 S/ 32 S ratios are not a robust diagnostic to clearly identify presolar grains made from nova ejecta.
