Radar Observations of Asteroid 10115 (1992 SK)

The approach of 1992 SK to within 0.056 AU of Earth on 1999 March 26 provided an excellent opportunity for radar observations. We observed it daily between March 22-26 at Goldstone at a transmitter frequency of 8560 MHz (3.50 cm). Weighted, optimally smoothed sums of cw (Doppler-only) echoes achieve a signal-to-noise ratio of about 300. Our highest resolution cw setup places up to approx. 30 0.5-Hz Doppler cells on the target at echo powers exceeding two standard deviations of the noise. Our highest resolution imaging setup places about 20 0.25-us (37.5 m) x 2.0 Hz pixels on 1992 SK at echo powers above the same threshold. We completed nearly 300 runs with each setup and obtained thorough rotational phase coverage (period = 7.320 h, P. Pravec, pers. comm.). The dispersion of the echoes in time delay indicates a lower bound on 1992 SK's maximum pole-on breadth of approx. 0.4 km that is consistent with the echo bandwidth and rotation period. Variations in the cw spectral bandwidths and shapes and in the delay-Doppler images as a function of rotation phase are evident on each day, are consistent in bandwidth with each other and with the rotation period, and indicate that the asteroid is asymmetric and modesty elongated.

A New Look at Aubrites: Investigating 3D Modal Mineralogy with X-Ray Computed Tomography

The aubrites (approximately 30 known meteorites) are a unique group of differentiated meteorites that formed on asteroids with oxygen fugacities (ƒO2) from approximately 2 to approximately 6 log units below the iron-wustite buffer. At these highly reduced conditions, elements deviate from the geochemical behavior exhibited at terrestrial ƒO2, forming FeO-poor silicates and exotic sulfides. While previous studies have described the petrology and 2D modal abundances of aubrites, this work investigates the 3D modal mineralogies of silicate, metal, and sulfide phases in aubrite samples, which are then compared to the available 2D data. In addition to 3D modal mineralogies, we have examined the geochemistry of fourteen aubrites, including mineral major-element compositions, bulk-rock compositions, and oxygen isotopic compositions to understand their formation and evolution at extreme ƒO2 conditions. We utilize X-ray computed tomography (XCT) to non-destructively analyze the distribution and abundances of mineral phases in aubrites and locate composite clasts of sulfide grains for future analytical study. In order to better constrain elemental behavior under reduced conditions, we specifically target minerals phases that comprise moderately volatile elements (i.e. oldhamite [CaS], caswellsilverite [NaCrS2] and djerfisherite [K6Na(Fe,Cu,Ni)25S26Cl]) as it has been shown that their geochemical behavior changes as a function of ƒO2. Currently, we have produced 3D scans of the Norton County aubrite. The results of the XCT data have allowed for the determination of the abundances of silicate groundmass (i.e., enstatite, forsterite, albite, and diopside), light (based on electron density) sulfides (i.e. alabandite [MnS] and daubréelite [FeCr2S4]), heavy (based on electron density) sulfides (i.e., troilite [FeS]), and Fe,Ni metal by segmenting a density histogram in Volume Graphics Studio software. XCT scans of additional aubrites are underway. By combining the 3D representation of the exotic phases found in aubrites with existing 2D characterizations, we are able to better determine modal abundances. By integrating 3D and 2D modal abundances and geochemistry, we can ultimately better constrain aubrite petrogenesis and elemental partitioning under reduced conditions. Furthermore, application of this new 3D approach offers the opportunity to identify and select clasts for future study prior to cutting the sample, which will minimize sample loss of this precious material.

Solar System Escape Architecture for Revolutionary Science

Our most distance spacecraft, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, recently reached the boundary of the solar system known as the Heliopause. Beyond this boundary lies interstellar space, and, at tremendous distance, the stars. The Voyager spacecraft have shown us that the Heliopause is a dynamic, rapidly changing environment, varying greatly as the fields and effects emanating from the sun are met by a host of forces pushing in from our nearby galactic neighborhood. This is the region we aim to explore. Specifically we aim to develop a mission architecture and spacecraft concept capable of reaching the Heliopause (approximately100 AU (Astronomical Units)) region in multiple directions of interest, with a variety of scientific instrument suites, within a reasonable timeframe (about 15 years.) This report details our Phase 1 work including science goal definition, trajectory planning, technology research, mission planning, instrument selection, spacecraft design, and more. We present an architecture employing a 250-meter by 250-meter solar sail with a 175 kilogram spacecraft. This spacecraft could carry a variety of instrument suites depending on the destination, time, and other factors. The spin-stabilized spacecraft would powered by a small radioisotope power system (about 20 watts), makes use of an optical communication system, and carries 3 extensible booms for instrument accommodation as visible in the sketch and rendering below. We conclude that it would be reasonable to implement the architecture described herein in the 2020-2030 timeframe based on likely near-term technological and material advances. We are confident that cruise times of around 15 years could be achieved to science-rich destinations. This report details the approach we used to come to these conclusions and identifies some of the steps along the way. We utilized a variety of methodologies involving our full capability at JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) - from small point studies to large collaborative engineering processes. This paper also describes potential industry partnerships and costing information, and includes the methods used to account for our project’s significant deviation from any prior mission in the NASA costing tool database. Outreach and public engagement is an important part of NASA activities. We engaged in several different forms of this outreach and describe them in this report. We conclude with some open questions and a summary of activities we hope to engage in with Phase 2 funding. The entire team would like to thank the NIAC (NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts) program for the opportunity to investigate this fascinating and challenging concept. The Voyager program gives us tantalizing clues as to the nature and behavior of the Heliopause – the boundary between the sun’s influence and the interstellar medium. This information comes from forty-year old instruments designed to study the outer planets. A targeted Heliopause investigation would give insight into the formation of the solar system, the role of the sun in the local interstellar neighborhood, and contribute to human exploration planning by helping to predict periods of low galactic cosmic ray (GCR) penetration into the inner solar system.

Flash photolysis resonance fluorescence investigation of the reaction of Cl/2P/ atoms with ClONO2

Rate constants for the removal of Cl(2P) atoms by homogeneous gas phase reaction with ClONO2 were measured using the flash photolysis resonance fluorescence technique at 224, 250, and 273 K. The values obtained have been used to derive the above Arrhenius equation. The uncertainties expressed are 95% confidence limits obtained using the statistical standard deviation of the individual rate constants plus a 15% additional estimated uncertainty attributed to difficulties in chlorine nitrate concentration measurements. The results indicate that destruction of chlorine nitrate by reaction with chlorine atoms is perhaps the least important of the atmospheric reactive channels, and is at least three orders of magnitude slower than calculated photodissociation rates at all stratospheric altitudes.

Updated Observations of Clouds By MODIS for Global Model Assessment

This paper describes a new global dataset of cloud properties observed by MODIS relying on the current (collection 6.1) processing of MODIS data and produced to facilitate comparison with results from the MODIS observational proxy used in climate models. The dataset merges observations from the two MODIS instruments into a single netCDF file. Statistics (mean, standard deviation, and number of observations) are accumulated over daily and monthly timescales on an equal-angle grid for viewing and illumination geometry, cloud detection, cloud-top pressure, and cloud properties (optical thickness, effective particle size, and water path) partitioned by thermodynamic phase and an assessment as to whether the underlying observations come from fully or partly cloudy pixels. Similarly partitioned joint histograms are available for (1) optical thickness and cloud-top pressure, (2) optical thickness and particle size, and (3) cloud water path and particle size. Differences with standard data products, caveats for data use, and guidelines for comparison to the MODIS simulator are described.

High precision attitude determination for Magsat

A two phase approach to attitude determination software development is introduced. The prelaunch planning and software activities connected with the development and testing of the baseline system for processing nominal attitude data for MAGSAT are described and postlaunch analysis and modifications are outlined. Attitude data processing began 5 months after launch so that postlaunch anomalies could be accounted for. Another advantage of the two phase approach is that costs are reduced because the system is not burdened with software dealing with all possible contingencies. A definitive, continuous, time history of the three axis attitude of the spacecraft was generated to a precision of 20 arc sec (one standard deviation), in each axis. Sensor alignment determinations were done continuously because of the deletrious effects of changing alignments on attitude precision.

Crystal Growth of ZnSe and Related Ternary Compound Semiconductors by Vapor Transport

Interest in optical devices which can operate in the visible spectrum has motivated research interest in the II-VI wide band gap semiconductor materials. The recent challenge for semiconductor opto-electronics is the development of a laser which can operate at short visible wavelengths, In the past several years, major advances in thin film technology such as molecular beam epitaxy and metal organic chemical vapor deposition have demonstrated the applicability of II-VI materials to important devices such as light-emitting diodes, lasers, and ultraviolet detectors. The demonstration of its optical bistable properties in bulk and thin film forms also make ZnSe a possible candidate material for the building blocks of a digital optical computer. Despite this, developments in the crystal growth of bulk II-VI semiconductor materials has not advanced far enough to provide the low price, high quality substrates needed for the thin film growth technology. The electrical and optical properties of semiconductor materials depend on the native point defects, (the deviation from stoichiometry), and the impurity or dopant distribution. To date, the bulk growth of ZnSe substrates has been plagued with problems related to defects such as non-uniform distributions of native defects, impurities and dopants, lattice strain, dislocations, grain boundaries, and second phase inclusions which greatly effect the device performance. In the bulk crystal growth of some technologically important semiconductors, such as ZnTe, CdS, ZnSe and ZnS, vapor growth techniques have significant advantages over melt growth techniques due to the high melting points of these materials.

Wideband phase modulator works directly on carrier

Multiplier-induced problems related to undesirable effects of the varactor multiplier on the modulation spectrum are eliminated in a modulator circuit which operates directly at the desired output frequency. The principles of operation of the new circuit are discussed and attention is given to requirements for high-Q components and the possibility of linear frequency deviation.

Spatial distribution of polarization over the disks of Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and the moon

The method of photographic subtraction, which superposes positive and negative photographs taken with the analyzer rotated through 90 deg, is used to analyze polarization photographs of Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and the moon. For Venus, near 90 deg phase angle, variation in polarization in ultraviolet light appears to correspond generally with the position of the cloud markings. The northern hemisphere of Saturn shows higher polarization in blue light than does the rest of the planet. The polarization of the moon is shown to deviate significantly from Umov's law for reciprocity of polarization and reflectivity in certain regions.

The 1976 Helios and Pioneer solar conjunctions-continuing corroboration of the link between Doppler noise and integrated signal path electron density

Observed Doppler noise (rms phase jitter) from the 1976 solar conjunctions of the Helios 1 and 2 and the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft was processed with a recently developed Doppler noise model ISEDB. Good agreement is obtained between the observed data and the model. Correlation is shown between deviations from the ISEDB model and sunspot activity, but it is insufficient to be modeled. Correlation is also shown between ISEDB model deviations for (spacecraft) signal paths on the same side of the sun.

Scattering of light by stochastically rough particles

The single particle phase function and the linear polarization for large stochastically deformed spheres have been calculated by Monte Carlo simulation using the geometrical optics approximation. The radius vector of a particle is assumed to obey a bivariate lognormal distribution with three free parameters: mean radius, its standard deviation and the coherence length of the autocorrelation function. All reflections/refractions which include sufficient energy have been included. Real and imaginary parts of the refractive index can be varied without any restrictions. Results and comparisons with some earlier less general theories are presented. Applications of this theory to the photometric properties of atmosphereless bodies and interplanetary dust are discussed.

New aspects in nucleon-nucleus collisions and EAS properties around 10(6) GeV

At energies higher than 2 x 10 to the 5 GeV, very little information exists on detailed properties of nucleon-nucleon collision; the rare elements are coming from jets, and, as nondirect improvements from gamma-ray families. The results exhibit some conflicting features, or, at least, very large fluctuations like copious production of gamma-rays in opposition to Centauro-like events, sometimes suggest that phase transition to quark gluon plasma occurs in nucleus-nucleus collisions and even in nucleon-nucleus collision. The multicluster phenomenological model (MPM) extrapolated for extensive air showers EAS simulation up to 5 x 10 to the 6 GeV to put in evidence some significant deviation between experimental data and prediction.

Microstructure and magnetization of doped Y-Ba-Ca-O materials prepared by melt quench and post annealing method

Y-Ba-Cu-O bulk materials prepared using the melt quench and post annealing method were shown to have very high maximum as well as remanent magnetization. Studies were carried out on materials prepared using this method which deviate from the Y:Ba:Cu = 1:2:3 stoichiometry. In one series of materials, only the stoichiometry was changed, in particular by introducing an excess of yttrium. In other cases, dopants including several rare earths were introduced. Effects of variations in composition on microstructure and phase evolution are discussed, as well as effects on the magnetic susceptibility and on the magnetization. The results show that doped materials can exhibit improvements in magnetic properties. Furthermore, the use of dopants sheds light on the role of defect sites in flux pinning.

Ultrasonic verification of five wave fronts in unidirectional graphite epoxy composite

The existence of five different waves fronts in a unidirectional graphite fiber reinforced epoxy composite with energy flux propagation at the angle of 60 deg with respect to the fiber direction is verified by measuring their corresponding group and phase velocities of longitudinal and shear waves using the through transmission technique. The experimental and theoretical values of phase velocities show excellent agreement for all three modes of wave propagation. It is also verified that the maximum output voltage amplitude is obtained when the line joining the centers of the transmitting and receiving transducers is parallel to the energy propagation direction defined by the deviation angle.

Low cost point focus solar concentrator, phase 1

Design concepts and plans for mass-production facilities and equipment, field installation, and maintenance were developed and used for cost analysis of a pneumatically stabilized plastic film point focus solar concentrator which has potential application in conjunction with Brayton cycle engines or supply of thermal energy. A sub-scale reflector was fabricated and optically tested by laser ray tracing to determine focal deviations of the surface slope and best focal plane. These test data were then used for comparisons with theoretical concentrator performance modeling and predictions of full-scale design performance. Results of the economic study indicate the concentrator design will have low cost when mass-produced and has cost/performance parameters that fall within current Jet Propulsion Laboratory goals.

Effects of cardiac phase on diameter measurements from coronary cineangiograms

The measurement variability of end-diastolic frames is compared with frames taken from the other portions of the cardiac cycle. Two computer measurements, average diameter and minimum, are obtained for every frame of two complete cardiac cycles in angiograms of 20 subjects. Six schemes for sampling frames in various portions of the cardiac cycle are defined and the standard deviation is calculated for pairs of measurements from each scheme. The results suggest that the best strategy for frame selection is to use sequential frames in end-diastole. However, it is noted that if random samples are taken anywhere in the cardiac cycle instead of sequentially in end-diastole, the variability of two vessel edge measures changes from 4.9 percent to 6.3 percent, which is considered to be a small penalty.

ASCA observations of the coronal X-ray emission of Algol

We report a 1.7 day ASCA X-ray observation of the 2.87 day binary Algol (Beta Per), centered on the secondary eclipse. Spectra accumulated for different intensity states show a prominent He-like iron K line at 6.7 keV. A two-temperature variable abundance plasma model applied to the spectra yielded temperatures of approximately 8 and approximately 30 MK. The modeled coronal abundances of Fe, O, Mg, Si, S, Ar, and Ca were a factor of 2-3 below the solar photospheric value, and N less than 0.1. These model abundance anomalies are similar to those found from the ASCA spectra of other late-type stars and may indicate either true deviations from solar abundances or problems with the assumptions and atomic physics of the plasma models. The X-ray light curve shows a factor of 2 increase in flux over 13 hr beginning in the middle of the secondary eclipse, with a shallow eclipse centered on phase 0.45. The orbital light curve is similar to that observed by ROSAT 1 year earlier. The rise in flux is caused by an increase in the emission measure of the higher temperature component. The intensity variation is not associated with any major change in the abundances or temperature of the two components.

Statistical Analysis of Recent Go Around Flight Data to Study and Evaluate Skilled Pilot Monitoring

A statistical analysis was performed on a batch of recent go-around flight data of a few major US airlines spanning a one year period. The statistical analysis investigates a few select relevant aspects of these go arounds, such as initiation altitude and altitude change, aircraft configuration, deviation from the flightpath, and energy state. These data show that only one third of the landings are aborted below 400ft, but the majority of the go arounds occur at significantly higher altitudes. Current go-around training is specifically focused on the final approach and landing phase at low altitudes and low speeds. The results of this study will support the development of a broader set of relevant scenarios for an FAA simulator experiment to study and evaluate the skills of the pilots who monitor this wide spectrum of diverse go-around conditions, with the ultimate goal to help improve pilot go-around training and technologies.
