International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) Stage DX Pixel Level Cloud Product - Revised Algorithm in Native (NAT) Format (ISCCP_DX_NAT)

Since 1983 an international group of institutions has collected and analyzed satellite radiance measurements from up to five geostationary and two polar orbiting satellites to infer the global distribution of cloud properties and their diurnal, seasonal and interannual variations. The primary focus of the first phase of the project (1983-1995) was the elucidation of the role of clouds in the radiation budget (top of the atmosphere and surface). In the second phase of the project (1995 onwards) the analysis also concerns improving understanding of clouds in the global hydrological cycle. People, Places and Pixels: Remote Sensing in the Service of Society

What is the role of Earth remote sensing and other geospatial technologies in our society? Recent global events have brought into focus the role of geospatial science and technology such as remote sensing, GIS, GPS in assisting the professionals who are responsible for operations such as rescue and recovery of sites after a disaster or a terrorist act. This paper reviews the use of recent remote sensing products from satellites such as IKONOS in these efforts. Aerial and satellite imagery used in land mine detection has been evaluated and the results of this evaluation will be discussed. Synopsis of current and future ISS Earth Remote Sensing capabilities will be provided. The role of future missions in humanitarian use of remote sensing will be explored.

Dynamic Black-Level Correction and Artifact Flagging for Kepler Pixel Time Series

Methods applied to the calibration stage of Kepler pipeline data processing [1] (CAL) do not currently use all of the information available to identify and correct several instrument-induced artifacts. These include time-varying crosstalk from the fine guidance sensor (FGS) clock signals, and manifestations of drifting moire pattern as locally correlated nonstationary noise, and rolling bands in the images which find their way into the time series [2], [3]. As the Kepler Mission continues to improve the fidelity of its science data products, we are evaluating the benefits of adding pipeline steps to more completely model and dynamically correct the FGS crosstalk, then use the residuals from these model fits to detect and flag spatial regions and time intervals of strong time-varying black-level which may complicate later processing or lead to misinterpretation of instrument behavior as stellar activity.

Inductively Coupled Plasma Etching for Delineation of InAs/GaSb Pixels

We developed 320x256 Complimentary Barrier Infrared (CBIRD) focal plane array (FPA) for long wave infrared (LWIR) imaging application. The FPA layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) had 300 periods 1.9 micro m thick absorber. The CBIRD arrays showed the mean dark current density of 2.2 x 10(exp -4) A/cm2, when 128 mV bias voltage was applied. The long wave cut off was observed at 8.8 micrometers at the 50% peak and the maximum quantum efficiency was 54% at 5.6 micrometers. The arrays had 81% fill factor with 97% operability with noise equivalent difference temperature (NE(delta)T) of 18.6 mK and a mean detectivity of D*=1.3 x 10(exp 11) Hz(exp 1/2)/W.

Solid-state Image Sensor with Focal-plane Digital Photon-counting Pixel Array

A solid-state focal-plane imaging system comprises an NxN array of high gain. low-noise unit cells. each unit cell being connected to a different one of photovoltaic detector diodes, one for each unit cell, interspersed in the array for ultra low level image detection and a plurality of digital counters coupled to the outputs of the unit cell by a multiplexer(either a separate counter for each unit cell or a row of N of counters time shared with N rows of digital counters). Each unit cell includes two self-biasing cascode amplifiers in cascade for a high charge-to-voltage conversion gain (greater than 1mV/e(-)) and an electronic switch to reset input capacitance to a reference potential in order to be able to discriminate detection of an incident photon by the photoelectron (e(-))generated in the detector diode at the input of the first cascode amplifier in order to count incident photons individually in a digital counter connected to the output of the second cascade amplifier. Reseting the input capacitance and initiating self-biasing of the amplifiers occurs every clock cycle of an integratng period to enable ultralow light level image detection by the may of photovoltaic detector diodes under such ultralow light level conditions that the photon flux will statistically provide only a single photon at a time incident on anyone detector diode during any clock cycle.

Pixel-Based Model For High Latitude Dust Detection

Dust has implications on the energy budget, ocean biodiversity, and economy at regional and global scales. Dust detection relies on spectral sensitivity at visible (RGB) and infrared wavelengths. Radiative properties of high latitude dust and the background surface albedo in these regions (>40°N, >40°S) complicate current dust detection methods. Leveraging supervised machine learning (ML) methods, we propose a new method accounting for regional differences of dust occurrence.
