The East Asian summer monsoon is unique among summer monsoon systems in its complex seasonality, exhibiting distinct intraseasonal stages. Previous studies have alluded to the downstream influence of the westerlies flowing around the Tibetan Plateau as key to its existence. We explore this hypothesis using an atmospheric general circulation model that simulates the intraseasonal stages with fidelity. Without a Tibetan Plateau, East Asia exhibits only one primary convective stage typical of other monsoons. As the plateau is introduced, the distinct rainfall stages—spring, pre-mei-yu, mei-yu, and midsummer—emerge, and rainfall becomes more intense overall. This emergence coincides with a pronounced modulation of the westerlies around the plateau and extratropical northerlies penetrating northeastern China. The northerlies meridionally constrain the moist southerly flow originating from the tropics, leading to a band of lower-tropospheric convergence and humidity front that produces the rainband. The northward migration of the westerlies away from the northern edge of the plateau leads to a weakening of the extratropical northerlies, which, coupled with stronger monsoonal southerlies, leads to the northward migration of the rainband. When the peak westerlies migrate north of the plateau during the midsummer stage, the extratropical northerlies disappear, leaving only the monsoon low-level circulation that penetrates northeastern China; the rainband disappears, leaving isolated convective rainfall over northeastern China. In short, East Asian rainfall seasonality results from the interaction of two seasonally evolving circulations—the monsoonal southerlies that strengthen and extend northward, and the midlatitude northerlies that weaken and eventually disappear—as summer progresses.
The Plateau to River Groundwater Model (P2R Model) is a groundwater flow and contaminant fate and transport (F&T) simulation model used to support remedial activities conducted by CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company at the Hanford Site in Washington State. Figure 1-1 illustrates the P2R Model extents, discretization, and boundary conditions. The P2R Model is utilized in the Composite Analysis (CA) for the Hanford Site as the computational engine for computing F&T predictions as described in CP-60406, Hanford Site Composite Analysis Technical Approach Description: Groundwater. The model simulates contaminants of concern within the saturated zone of the uppermost aquifer beneath the Central Plateau and downgradient to the Columbia River. CP-57037, Model Package Report for the Plateau to River Model Version 8.3, documents the current version of the P2R Model including a description of the conceptual site model, model development and calibration, and limitations to the model application. The overall objective of the saturated zone modeling effort is to provide a basis for making informed remedial action decisions based on descriptions of current and expected future contaminant concentrations in groundwater at decision points within and downgradient of the Central Plateau of the Hanford Site. Specifically, the purpose of this environmental calculation is to describe the application of the hydraulic property fields and recharge parameters documented in ECF-HANFORD-20-0027, Null Space Monte Carlo Evaluation of the Plateau to River Model, to the CA flow and fate and transport simulation results to quantify the uncertainty in the simulated results due to input parameter selection. Use of numerical groundwater models is always accompanied with uncertainty in the results produced by a model because models are approximations of reality. Thus, by definition, models lack the detail to fully represent observed behavior. Use of numerical techniques, such as a NSMC analysis, can help in identifying and quantifying the potential uncertainties associated with a numerical model such as the P2R Model. The result of NSCM analysis is a set of F&T simulations that provide an estimate of the range of possible outcomes that are used to quantify the uncertainty in simulated concentrations produced using the base case simulations. The simulated concentrations from all simulations will support calculation of the uncertainty of the total dose calculated in a separate calculation.
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are fascinating events due to their panchromatic nature. Their afterglow emission is observed from sub-TeV energies to radio wavelengths. We investigate GRBs that present an optical plateau, leveraging on the resemblance with the X-ray plateau shown in many GRB light curves (LCs). We comprehensively analyze all published GRBs with known redshifts and optical plateau observed mostly by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift). We fit 267 optical LCs and show the existence of the plateau in 102 cases, which is the largest compilation so far of optical plateaus. For 56 Swift GRBs with optical and X-ray plateaus, we compare the rest-frame end time at both wavelengths ( , ), and conclude that the plateau is achromatic between and . We also confirm the existence of the two-dimensional relations between and the optical luminosity at the end of the plateau emission, which resembles the same luminosity–time correlation in X-rays (Dainotti et al. 2013 ). Additionally, the existence of this optical correlation has been demonstrated for the largest sample of optical plateaus in the literature to date. The squared scatter in this optical correlation is smallest for the subset of the Gold GRBs with a decrease in the scatter equivalent to 52.4% when compared to the scatter of the entire GRB sample.
The reported study is a continuation of an investigation begun by Alexander and Kahl (1974), with primary emphasis on (Ar-40)-(Ar-39) dating of lunar breccias. A primary objective of the study was related to the resolution of small plateau-age differences between Apollo 16 and 17 samples which have been irradiated in the same irradiation. This objective was not realized because (1) neither of the considered Apollo 16 samples has a well-defined plateau, and (2) the release patterns of the two Apollo 17 samples with plateaux (73235 and 77017) are sufficiently complex to suggest caution in interpretation of fine-scale differences among apparent ages. The plateau age of 73235 agrees well with plateau ages measured for a nearby boulder at the South Massif. The plateau age of 77017, on the other hand, agrees well with plateau ages measured in an nearby boulder at the base of the North Massif. These rock and boulder ages are tightly clustered about 3.99 b.y., and this clustering suggests that the North and South Massifs were made in the same basin-forming event, presumably Serenitatis.
Two-electron, one-proton reactions of a family of [CoCp(dxpe)(NCCH 3 )] 2+ complexes (Cp = cyclopentadienyl, dxpe = 1,2-bis(di(aryl/alkyl)phosphino)ethane) form the corresponding hydride species [HCoCp(dxpe)] + through a stepwise proton-coupled electron transfer process. For three [CoCp(dxpe)(NCCH 3 )] 2+ complexes (dxpe = dppe (1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane), depe (1,2-bis(diethylphosphino)ethane), and dcpe (1,2-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane)), peak shift analysis was employed to quantify apparent proton transfer rate constants from cyclic voltammograms recorded with acids ranging 22 pK a units. The apparent proton transfer rate constants correlate with the strength of the proton source for weak acids, but these apparent proton transfer rate constants curiously plateau (k pl ) as the reaction becomes increasingly exergonic. The absolute apparent proton transfer rate constants across both these regions correlate with the steric bulk of the chelating diphosphine ligand, with bulkier ligands leading to slower kinetics (k plateau, depe = 3.5 x 10 7 M -1 s -1 , k plateau, dppe = 1.7 x 10 7 M -1 s -1 , k plateau, dcpe = 7.1 x 10 4 M -1 s -1 ). Mechanistic studies were conducted to identify the cause of the aberrant $k_PT^{app}$–ΔpK a trends. When the deuterated acids are employed, deuterium incorporation in the Cp ring is observed, indicating protonation of the CoCp(dxpe) species to form the corresponding hydride proceeds via initial ligand protonation. Digital simulations of cyclic voltammograms show ligand loss accompanying initial reduction gates subsequent PCET activity at higher driving forces. Together, these experiments reveal the details of the reaction mechanism: reduction of the Co(III) species is followed by dissociation of the bound acetonitrile ligand, subsequent reduction of the unligated Co(II) species to form a Co(I) species is followed by protonation, which occurs at the Cp ring, followed by tautomerization to generate the stable Co(III)-hydride product [HCoCp(dxpe)] + . Analysis as a function of chelating disphosphine ligand, solvent, and acid strength reveals that the ligand dissociation equilibrium is directly influenced by the steric bulk of the phosphine ligands and gates protonation, giving rise to the plateau of apparent proton transfer rate constant with strong acids. The complexity of the reaction mechanism underpinning hydride formation, encompassing dynamic behavior of the entire ligand set, highlights the critical need to understand elementary reaction steps in proton-coupled electron transfer reactions.
Infrared (IR) dimension function d IR ( λ ) characterizes the space effectively utilized by QCD quarks at Dirac scale λ , and indirectly the space occupied by glue fields. It was proposed that its nonanalytic behavior in thermal reflects the separation of QCD system into an IR component and an independent bulk. Here we study the “plateau modes” in the IR component, whose dimensional properties were puzzling. Indeed, in the recent scenario of transition to IR phase, this low-dimensional plateau connects the Anderson-like mobility edge λ IR = 0 in Dirac spectrum with mobility edges ± λ A . For this structure to be truly Anderson-like, plateau modes have to be exponentially localized, implying that both the effective distances L eff ∝ L γ and the effective volumes V eff ∝ L d IR in these modes grow slower than any positive power of IR cutoff L . Although γ = 0 was confirmed in the plateau, it was found that d IR ≈ 1 . Here we apply the recently proposed technique to the problem. We conclude that a plateau mode of pure-glue QCD at UV cutoff a = 0.085 fm occupies a subvolume of IR dimension zero with probability at least 0.9999, substantiating this aspect of metal-to-critical scenario to a respective degree. Magnetic field configurations in which the axial component of the field decays linearly to a constant plateau field are evaluated for use in refocusing the output beam of linear beam microwave tubes. The slope of the decay and the value of the plateau field are parameters in this study. A uniform beam with a space charge force only in the radial direction is assumed, and the electron trajectories are computed for various classes. For a given magnetic configuration (slope and plateau value) the plateau length is calculated for a specified class and the rms deviation of the output angles for all classes is computed at the end of this plateau length. A minimum condition for a refocused beam is defined to be one in which the rms value of the output angles is less than the rms input. Many of the configurations satisfied this criteria and successfully reduced the rms value by half.
