Method to produce colorless, high porosity, transparent polymer aerogels

A method to produce a polymer gel includes dissolving precursors in a solvent to form a precursor solution, the precursors including polymer precursors, a stable free radical, one or more initiating radicals, and one or more stable free radical control agents, and heating the precursor solution to a temperature of polymerization to produce a cross-linked gel. A dried polymer aerogel has a Brunauer-Emmett Teller (BET) surface area over 100 m2/g, porosity of greater than 10%, visible transparency greater than 20%, color rendering index of over 20%, and average pore size of less than 100 nm.

Using pyrometry to identify porosity in additively manufactured structures

A method and apparatus for identifying porosity in a structure made by an additive manufacturing process in which a laser is scanned across layers of material to form the structure. Pyrometry data comprising images of the layers acquired during additive manufacturing of the structure is received. The pyrometry data is used to generate temperature data comprising estimated temperatures of points in the layers in the images of the layers. The temperature data is used to identify shapes fit to high temperature areas in the images of the layers. Conditions of the shapes fit to the high temperature areas in the images of the layers are identified. Outlier shapes are identified in the shapes fit to the high temperature areas in the images of the layers using the conditions of the shapes.

Mechanical Properties of Irradiated U-10wt%Mo Alloy Degraded by Porosity Development

A plate-type nuclear fuel consisting of a solid monolithic foil of U-10wt%Mo is under development for use in the United States’ high performance research reactors. In support of developing this fuel, the fuel has been fabricated for the first time by a commercial fuel vendor and subsequently irradiated in a test reactor. This provides an opportunity to evaluate post-irradiation mechanical properties of commercially fabricated fuel. Four-point bend testing was conducted on the irradiated U-10Mo fuel and the data produced includes bending strength and Young’s modulus. Although the material behaves in a brittle manner due to the developed porosity, a general trend of strength and modulus reduction are found as fission density increases. The data produced is evaluated using both Weibull statistics and a modulus degradation model with recommendations provided.

Thermal conductivity of cement paste: Influence of macro-porosity

Thermal conductivity of cement paste is significantly influenced by the presence of macro-pores within it. These pores (pores with size greater than 6 μm, measured using microCT) which may be filled with air and/or water significantly alters the thermal conductivity of the resulting material. A combination of experiments, molecular dynamic investigations of major constituents of the cement paste, multiscale homogenization techniques, and inclusion of thermal conductivity of the pores containing either air or water has been utilized in this study to reveal the influence of pores in the calculation of thermal conductivity of the composite material.

Mesoscale modelling of dynamic porosity in cement hydrate gel during a water sorption cycle: A lattice Boltzmann study

We describe a lattice Boltzmann modelling framework for fluid sorption coupled to a dynamic model of cement hydrate microstructure upon which it is possible to explore ideas of water sorption in cement emergent from NMR and other recent experimental studies. The results of the first simulations using the model are presented. We show that it is possible to extract transport and microstructural relaxation parameters from the simulations that are in good qualitative agreement with experiment. We discuss limitations of the methodology.

Influence of sizing concentration on strength, stiffness, and porosity in textile grade carbon fiber (TCF)-Epoxy composites: Revealing inverse trends

The effect of fiber sizing (i.e., surface treatment) concentration (0 %, 1.36 %, 1.52 %, 1.94 %, and 2.13 %) on the mechanical properties (tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and low velocity impact) of textile grade carbon fiber (TCF)-epoxy composite is examined. An inverse relationship between the strength and stiffness of the composite is observed with increased sizing concentration. The root mean square (RMS) roughness of the fiber surface increased from 17.8 nm (unsized) to 22.7 nm with 2.13 % sizing concentration. It was found that the tensile strength increased by 131 % from 221.4 ± 18.5 MPa (unsized) to 510.8 ± 28.05 MPa (for 1.36 % sizing) and further by 155 %–563.7 ± 14.95 MPa at 2.13 % sizing. On the contrary, the stiffness is initially increased by 126 % from 33.52 ± 7.80 GPa (unsized) to 75.9 ± 3.21 GPa (for 1.36 % sizing) but reduced with further increase in the sizing concentration. A single fiber pull-out test is simulated using the finite element method to validate the reverse trend in strength and stiffness. The varying sizing concentration is simulated by introducing an interface of varying thickness between fibers and matrix. Simulation results confirm that a thicker interface, corresponding to a higher sizing concentration, decreases interfacial shear stress, enhancing material strength while decreasing stiffness. The reverse trend in strength and stiffness with the sizing concentration aligns with experimental observations. In conclusion, the present study emphasizes the importance of sizing concentration for mechanical properties and provide a design criterion for customized high-strength and high-stiffness applications.
