Broadside coupled coplanar inductors

A broadside coupled coplanar inductor device includes first and second coplanar inductors in which the conductors of the first and second coplanar inductors are broadside coupled. The conductors are located one above the other at a first distance and the return paths are located to the side of the respective first and second conductor signal paths at a second distance. One or both of the dimensions of the first and second first distances is defined so as to maximize a mutual inductance between the conductors. First and second driver circuit apply voltages across each conductor. The input pulse width modulation signals applied to the first and second driver circuits are 180 degrees out of phase.

Comparison of converter topologies for charging capacitors used in pulsed load applications

The authors present a qualitative comparison of different power converter topologies which may be utilized for charging capacitors in pulsed power applications requiring voltages greater than 1 kV. The operation of the converters in capacitor charging applications is described, and relevant advantages are presented. All of the converters except one may be classified in the high-frequency switching category. One of the benefits from high-frequency operation is a reduction in size and weight. The other converter discussed is a member of the command resonant changing category. The authors first describe a boost circuit which functions as a command resonant charging circuit and utilizes a single pulse of current to charge the capacitor. The discussion of high-frequency converters begins with the flyback and Ward converters. Then, the series, parallel, and series/parallel resonant converters are examined.

Design considerations for high-power VHF radar transceivers: The Poker Flat MST radar phase control system

Sixty-four separate 50-kW peak-power transmitters are distributed throughout the 200 x 200 meter Poker Flat MST radar antenna array. The relative phase of each transmitter is automatically controlled by a 64-channel unit located in the main building at the edge of the antenna. The phase control unit is described. In operation the RF pulse from a transmitter coupler is power divided and compared with the phase reference in a mixer. The mixer output is low-pass filtered and sampled near the center of the resulting video pulse by an amplifying sample-and-hold integrated circuit. Phase control is effected by maintaining the mixer output pulse near zero volts by amplifying the sample-and-hold output which then drives the voltage-controlled phase shifter in the direction to null the mixer output. The voltage-controlled shifter achieves over 360 deg phase shift in the range from 0.7 to 24 volts. When the voltage into the shifter tracks to either voltage limit the wrap-around control resets the voltage so that the shifter is always operating within its control range.

Fast recharge circuit for q-switched lasers

Cavity-dumped lasers employ electrooptic-effect cell to alternately block and release laser pulse. Cell requires high-speed switching circuit that can apply and remove high voltage. Solid-state circuit employs complementary transistor switches which can switch at rates greater than 5 kHz, eliminate warmup time, provide variable voltage wave-form, and allow polarity reversal.

Dynamics of qudit gates and effects of spectator modes on optimal control pulses

Qudit gates for high-dimensional quantum computing can be synthesized with high precision using numerical quantum optimal control techniques. Large circuits are broken down into modules and the tailored pulses for each module can be used as primitives for a qudit compiler. Application of the pulses of each module in the presence of extra modes may decrease their effectiveness due to crosstalk. In this paper, we address this problem by simulating qudit dynamics for circuit quantum electrodynamics systems. As a test case, we take pulses for single-qudit swap gates optimized in isolation and then apply them in the presence of spectator modes each of which are in Fock states. We provide an experimentally relevant scaling formula that can be used as a bound on the fidelity decay. Our results show that frequency shift from spectator mode populations has to be ≲ 0.1 % of the qudit's nonlinearity in order for high-fidelity single-qudit gates to be useful in the presence of occupied spectator modes.

Faster Hall-Effect Current-Measuring Circuit

Current-measuring circuit operates on Hall-effect-sensing and magnetic-field-nulling principles similar to those described in article, "Nulling Hall-Effect Current-Measuring Circuit" (LEW-15023), but simpler and responds faster. Designed without feedback loop, and analog pulse-width-modulated output indicates measured current. Circuit measures current at frequency higher than bandwidth of its Hall-effect sensor.

Frequency correction device uses digital circuitry

Signal acquisition and tracking system covering a wide range of frequencies uses a digital circuit to sample the frequency of an incoming signal and provide correction pulses to the voltage-controlled oscillator. The circuit can also sense the presence of a signal on any one of the input lines.

Improving Power-Supply Regulation for Pulsed Loads

Power supply voltage-regulator circuit speeds up response to sudden load changes. As load increases, additional feedback path is enabled. Path bypasses and provides faster loop response than normal feedback path. Steady-state instability due to faster loop response avoided by progressively disabling bypass loop and allowing normal feedback path to take over.

Embedded ESD Protection Proof of Concept

The purpose of this project is to characterize and correlate Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) sensitivity levels of an Integrated Circuit (IC) package using Transmission Line Pulse (TLP) and Human Body Model (HBM) methods. This characterization will be used as a baseline ESD sensitivity level to demonstrate improvement to the ESD sensitivity of the IC package through the use of EPI-FLO(Trade Mark) Polymer Voltage Suppression (PVS) protection devices developed and manufactured by Electronic Polymers, Inc. (EPI).

Pulse width dependence of magnetic field generation using laser-powered capacitor coils

Megagauss magnetic fields were generated by a current flowing through a U-shaped coil connecting two parallel copper foils. Two kJ-class lasers at various pulse widths from 2 ns to 9.9 ns passed through holes in the front foil and were focused on the back foil with an intensity of ~1.7×10 16 W/cm 2 . The coil current and resulting magnetic fields were characterized using ultrafast proton radiography, timed at the end of the laser pulses. Additionally, the measurements show that magnetic field strength decays with increasing laser pulse width. A lumped-circuit model was developed and showed consistency with the experimental measurements, demonstrating an ion shorting effect: as the ion current neutralizes the electron current contribution to interplate voltage, the coil current peaks on a timescale close to the ion transit time t i = d/v ion . FLASH simulations of the coil current are performed, and the calculated resistance values are used to constrain ion speed as a function of hot electron temperature.

Binary selectable detector holdoff circuit: Design, testing, and application

A very high speed switching circuit, part of a laser radar data acquisition system, has been designed and tested. The primary function of this circuit was to provide computer controlled switching of photodiode detector preamplifier power supply voltages, typically less than plus or minus 20 volts, in approximately 10 nanoseconds. Thus, in actual use, detector and/or detector preamplifier damage can be avoided as a result of sudden extremely large values of backscattered radiation being detected, such as might be due to short range, very thin atmospheric dust layers. Switching of the power supply voltages was chosen over direct switching the photodiode detector input to the preamplifier, based on system noise considerations. Also, the circuit provides a synchronized trigger pulse output for triggering devices such as the Biomation Model 8100 100 MHz analog to digital converter.

Brushless tachometer generates signals for moving large and varying loads precisely. Stepper waveform generator sends short sequence of pulses to instruct control logic circuit to perform its function-that is, to select proper windings and directions of excitation to drive and damp motor. Control logic circuit bases decisions on following logic signals, derived from tachometer: rate direction, rate threshold, and position.
