Technology requirements to be addressed by the NASA Lewis Research Center Cryogenic Fluid Management Facility program

The NASA Lewis Research Center is responsible for the planning and execution of a scientific program which will provide advance in space cryogenic fluid management technology. A number of future space missions were identified that require or could benefit from this technology. These fluid management technology needs were prioritized and a shuttle attached reuseable test bed, the cryogenic fluid management facility (CFMF), is being designed to provide the experimental data necessary for the technology development effort.

Safety management of complex research operations

Complex research and technology operations present many varied potential hazards which must be addressed in a disciplined independent safety review and approval process. The research and technology effort at the Lewis Research Center is divided into programmatic areas of aeronautics, space and energy. Potential hazards vary from high energy fuels to hydrocarbon fuels, high pressure systems to high voltage systems, toxic chemicals to radioactive materials and high speed rotating machinery to high powered lasers. A Safety Permit System presently covers about 600 potentially hazardous operations. The Safety Management Program described in this paper is believed to be a major factor in maintaining an excellent safety record at the Lewis Research Center.

GREMEX-A new management training concept

Goddard Research Engineering Management Exercise provides experience in R&D project decision making from a management rather than technological view. The participant directs a hypothetical project presented in the management simulation technique. He uses old or new methods without concern for rewards or penalties existing in real life.

Research in image management and access

Presently, the problem of over-all library system design has been compounded by the accretion of both function and structure to a basic framework of requirements. While more device power has led to increased functionality, opportunities for reducing system complexity at the user interface level have not always been pursued with equal zeal. The purpose of this book is therefore to set forth and examine these opportunities, within the general framework of human factors research in man-machine interfaces. Human factors may be viewed as a series of trade-off decisions among four polarized objectives: machine resources and user specifications; functionality and user requirements. In the past, a limiting factor was the availability of systems. However, in the last two years, over one hundred libraries supported by many different software configurations have been added to the Internet. This document includes a statistical analysis of human responses to five Internet library systems by key features, development of the ideal online catalog system, and ideal online catalog systems for libraries and information centers.

Managing Software Provenance to Enhance Reproducibility in Computational Research

Scientific processes rely on software as an important tool for data acquisition, analysis, and discovery. Over the years, sustainable software development practices have made progress in being considered as an integral component of research. However, management of computation-based scientific studies is often left to individual researchers who design their computational experiments based on personal preferences and the nature of the study. Here, we believe that the quality, efficiency, and reproducibility of computation-based scientific research can be improved by explicitly creating an execution environment that allows researchers to provide a clear record of traceability. This is particularly relevant to complex computational studies in high-performance computing (HPC) environments. In this article, we review the documentation required to maintain a comprehensive record of HPC computational experiments for reproducibility. We also provide an overview of tools and practices that we have developed to perform such studies around Flash-X, a multiphysics scientific software.

DOE Data Days 2023 Report

The DOE Data Days (D3) workshop brings together data managers, developers, researchers, and program managers across the Department of Energy (DOE) and national laboratories to highlight data management successes, identify potential synergies and common problems, and establish channels for collaboration across the DOE data management community. The fourth D3 workshop was held on October 24th to 26th, 2023 held entirely in-person at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The workshop was organized by a multi laboratory committee in an effort to bring data management practitioners at the DOE laboratories together to share their work and results, facilitating knowledge transfers and best practices across project teams. Tools and platforms to support data management and analysis are rapidly evolving and provide enormous opportunities. This report summarizes the important discussions and recommendations from the different working sessions and contains the agenda, submitted abstracts, presentations with links to recorded presentations, breakout session summaries, list of registered attendees, and lessons learned for future organizing committee. The report will be distributed to the DOE, each participating institution’s programmatic stakeholders, and attendees. The dedicated D3 website will host presentations, agenda, and report that is accessible by all labs.

The Sensor Management for Applied Research Technologies (SMART) Project

NASA seeks on-demand data processing and analysis of Earth science observations to facilitate timely decision-making that can lead to the realization of the practical benefits of satellite instruments, airborne and surface remote sensing systems. However, a significant challenge exists in accessing and integrating data from multiple sensors or platforms to address Earth science problems because of the large data volumes, varying sensor scan characteristics, unique orbital coverage, and the steep "learning curve" associated with each sensor, data type, and associated products. The development of sensor web capabilities to autonomously process these data streams (whether real-time or archived) provides an opportunity to overcome these obstacles and facilitate the integration and synthesis of Earth science data and weather model output.

NY TBO Research: Integrated Demand Management (IDM): IDM Concept, Tools, and Training Package

A series of human-in-the-loop simulation sessions were conducted in the Airspace Operations Laboratory (AOL) to evaluate a new traffic management concept called Integrated Demand Management (IDM). The simulation explored how to address chronic equity, throughput and delay issues associated with New Yorks high-volume airports by operationally integrating three current and NextGen capabilities the Collaborative Trajectory Options Program (CTOP), Time-Based Flow Management (TBFM) and Required Time of Arrival (RTA) in order to better manage traffic demand within the National Air Traffic System. A package of presentation slides was developed to describe the concept, tools, and training materials used in the simulation sessions. The package will be used to outbrief our stakeholders by both presenting orally and disseminating of the materials via email.
