Realization, Timeline, Challenges and Ultimate Limits of Future Colliders

We present a summary of the Snowmass’21 Accelerator Frontier discussions on the future collider facilities for HEP and possible implementation scenarios and challenges. The main findings of the Implementation Task Force on the required R&D duration and construction cost will be discussed. We also take a look into the possible limits of ultimate colliders in terms of energy, luminosity, size, cost, power, and timeline.

A microscopic realization of dS$_3$

We propose a precise duality between pure de Sitter quantum gravity in 2+1 2 + 1 dimensions and a double-scaled matrix integral. This duality unfolds in two distinct aspects. First, by carefully quantizing the gravitational phase space, we arrive at a novel proposal for the quantum state of the universe at future infinity. We compute cosmological correlators of massive particles in the universe specified by this wavefunction. Integrating these correlators over the metric at future infinity yields gauge-invariant observables, which are identified with the string amplitudes of the complex Liouville string [S. Collier et al., arXiv: 2409.17246]. This establishes a direct connection between integrated cosmological correlators and the resolvents of the matrix integral dual to the complex Liouville string, thereby demonstrating one aspect of the dS _3 3 /matrix integral duality. The second aspect concerns the cosmological horizon of the dS static patch and the Gibbons-Hawking entropy it is conjectured to encode. We show that this entropy can be reproduced exactly by counting the entries of the matrix.

Realizing High-Accuracy Low-Cost Measurement and Verification for Deep Cost Savings (BPA Cost Share CRADA)

Developed practitioner workflows that integrate advanced M&V tools with supplementary automated routines for non-routine adjustments and for quantification of savings uncertainty to indicate rigor. Demonstrated these workflows with Seattle City Light, in collaboration with their implementers and evaluators – determine labor and time/cost savings, and uncertainty of the results obtained. Engaged the Pacific Northwest regulatory community to determine acceptance criteria for the required accuracy and reporting of advanced whole-building M&V. Documented the findings to facilitate broad industry uptake of the solutions.

The Evolving U.S. Distribution System: Technologies, Architectures, and Regulations for Realizing a Transactive Energy Marketplace

As pockets of the U.S. experience growing penetrations of distributed energy resources (DERs), the traditional practices underpinning distribution system regulation, operation, and management are evolving. The challenges and opportunities that DERs pose are driving stakeholders across the United States to reconsider regulatory goals, utility business models, ratemaking, and grid architectures. This report reviews the evolution of the U.S. distribution system from the advent of the utility-as-regulated-monopoly business model to the technological and regulatory shifts happening. The report concludes with a discussion of transactive energy systems and summarizes some of the leading RD&D happening in this field.

Technical Report: Accessor Realization

As we have seen the arithmetic power of hardware architectures growing much faster than the memory bandwidth, there is an urgent need to rethink the way we operate, communicate, and store data. A promising strategy for overcoming the “memory wall” is the decoupling of memory precision from arithmetic precision as proposed in Anzt et al.. Such a decoupling of memory precision and arithmetic precision requires a “memory accessor” that handles the conversion between formats (resp. compression of the data) on the fly in registers. For such a memory accessor to be useful in practice, it has to combine multiple characteristics.

Expanding the Knock/Emissions/Misfire Limits for the Realization of Ultra-Low Emissions, High Efficiency Heavy Duty Natural Gas Engines

The Vehicle Technologies Office funds early-stage, high-risk research to develop technology upon which industry can implement innovative transportation energy technologies that increase efficiency, decrease cost, and expand use of domestic energy sources, such as natural gas (NG). To improve the viability of medium and heavy-duty vehicles the natural gas engine efficiency must be closer to that of diesel. This work addresses fundamental limitations to achieve diesel-like efficiencies in heavy duty on-road natural gas engines. The primary goal of this research is to achieve diesel-like efficiencies in heavy duty on-road NG engines, focusing on the Cummins 15 liter engine platform (baseline diesel efficiency of 44% at peak torque). That goal has been achieved, though more work is needed to facilitate practical implementation of the developed technologies.

Mobility and Energy Improvements Realized through Prediction-based Vehicle Powertrain Control and Traffic Management (Research Performance Final Report)

The goal of this project was to utilize individual vehicle and systems-level transportation big data to develop real-world implementable techniques for energy efficiency. We collected a real world dataset in Fort Collins, CO using technology that is currently available. This dataset was used to (1) create individual vehicle prediction models and emissions models using cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, (2) create traffic prediction models, (3) create boundary condition constraints for optimal trajectory derivation, and (4) develop a novel Mobility Energy Productivity (MEP) model for Fort Collins, CO at a fidelity and flexibility which did not previously exist. Each of these techniques is novel but the most interesting results occurred from the intersection of all techniques. It was found that when optimal vehicle control is combined with optimal traffic light control, that significant energy efficiency improvements that do not compromise travel time are available.

Understanding Technical and Psychosocial Barriers to Realizing FAIR Data Process

The present study investigates barriers and facilitators to the implementation of Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data processes within the Physical Sciences Division of the Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD). Employing a dual-method approach consisting of surveys and focus group discussions, the study aims to illuminate the complex interplay between technical and psychosocial factors that influence FAIR data adoption.

Barriers and Opportunities To Realize the System Value of Interregional Transmission

This report identifies barriers within existing rules and operational practices that may limit the system value interregional transmission can provide and identifies a suite of options that could enable greater utilization of and value from interregional transmission. To allow for the variety of power sector structures that exist across the United States, the report divides the evaluation of barriers and opportunities into three sections: common issues that are found in all regions, barriers between non-market or hybrid areas, and barriers between market areas. The report also identifies ambitious, transformative national actions that could unlock transmission value across both market and non-market areas. In the analysis of barriers and potential opportunities for improvement, we recognize these are complex issues that with a diverse set of power system stakeholders and considerations that must be taken into account. The aim of this report is not to make recommendations but to identify options to improve the use of interregional transmission that could be considered alongside other local, state, and regional objectives.

Realizing Steady-State Microbunching with Optical Stochastic Crystallization

Optical Stochastic Cooling (OSC) is a state-of-the-art beam cooling technology first demonstrated in 2021 at the IOTA storage ring at Fermilab's FAST facility. A second phase of the research program is planned to run in early 2025 and will incorporate an optical amplifier to enable significantly increased cooling rates and greater operational flexibility. In addition to beam cooling, an OSC system can be configured to enable advanced control over the phase space of the beam. An example operational mode could enable crystallization, where the particles in a bunch are locked into a self-reinforcing, regular microstructure at the OSC fundamental wavelength; we refer to this as Optical Stochastic Crystallization (OSX). OSX represents a new path toward Steady-State Microbunching (SSMB), which may enable light sources combining the high brightness of a free-electron laser with the high repetition rate of a storage ring. Such a source has applications from the terahertz to the extreme ultraviolet (EUV), including high-power EUV generation for semiconductor lithography. This contribution will discuss the status of the OSC experimental program and its potential to achieve the first demonstration of SSMB during the upcoming experimental run.
