Completion of Milestone M3CT-21IN0702028 - Receive Welding Module from IFE (Halden, Norway)

Prior to 2018, the U.S. DOE and the commercial nuclear industry relied upon the Halden Reactor Project’s capability to refabricate and reinstrument previously irradiated fuel rods. This capability has now been lost. This activity is key to recovering that capability and enabling the continuation of critical research on commercial and advanced LWR fuels. This welding module completes the three-module suite the Institute For Energy (IFE) was contracted to deliver to INL. This equipment will be used in FY22 to practice techniques developed at IFE for refabricating and instrumenting prototypical fuel rods.

Freeform three-mirror anastigmatic large-aperture telescope and receiver optics for CMB-S4

CMB-S4, the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) observatory, will provide detailed maps of the CMB at millimeter wavelengths to dramatically advance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the universe. CMB-S4 will deploy large and small aperture telescopes with hundreds of thousands of detectors to observe the CMB at arcminute and degree resolutions at millimeter wavelengths. Inflationary science benefits from a deep delensing survey at arcminute resolutions capable of observing a large field of view at millimeter wavelengths. This kind of survey acts as a complement to a degree angular resolution survey. The delensing survey requires a nearly uniform distribution of cameras per frequency band across the focal plane. We present a large-throughput, large-aperture (5-meter diameter) freeform three-mirror anastigmatic telescope and an array of 85 cameras for CMB observations at arcminute resolutions, which meets the needs of the delensing survey of CMB-S4. A detailed prescription of this three-mirror telescope and cameras is provided, with a series of numerical calculations that indicate expected optical performance and mechanical tolerance.

Modeling of Stress Distribution in Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage Tanks for In-Service Central Receiver Power Plants

Failures in molten nitrate salts thermal energy storage tanks (TES) have been occurring in several concentrating solar power (CSP) plants around the world after a few months or years of operation. These failures are mainly related to a combination of high stress, corrosion, large deformation, and thermal cycling. Most of these failures are a consequence of the infancy of this technology; technical standards for design, fabrication, implementation, and operation of molten salt tanks operating at temperatures up to 565 degrees Celsius do not exist and most of current in-service tanks have been designed using the recommendations from the American Petroleum Institute (API) 650 and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME section II standards, which are applicable for TES tanks operating at lower temperatures. We have developed a 3-dimensional model of a representative molten salt hot tank design that uses typical CSP plant operation conditions and allows determining the temperature and stress distribution in the tank. The model also considers the initial floor residual stresses and distortion after its welding fabrication. We have identified critical thermal gradients in the tank floor and shell and locations in the tank where the stresses are high and could become susceptible points for failure.
