Extracting the asymptotic behavior of S-matrix elements from their phases

The asymptotic kinematic limits of S-matrices are dominated by large logarithms which, roughly speaking, fall into two categories: those which are controlled by a renormalization group (RG) scale, which we may think of as logs involving ratios of invariant mass scales, and those which are functions of ratios of rapidities, so called “rapidity logs”. It has been pointed out by Caron-Huot and Wilhlem [1] that RG anomalous dimension can be extracted from the phase of the S-matrix, which can greatly simplify calculations via unitarity methods. In this paper we generalize the results of [1] to show that the phase can be used to reconstruct rapidity anomalous dimensions, by performing a special type of complex boost. The methodology introduced allows one to calculate without the need for a rapidity regulator which can lead to significant simplifications. We demonstrate the use of this method to derive the rapidity anomalous dimensions in the Sudakov form factor and the two parton soft function at two loops order.

Difference equations and integral families for Witten diagrams

We show that tree-level and one-loop Mellin space correlators in anti-de Sitter space obey certain difference equations, which are the direct analog to the differential equations for Feynman loop integrals in the flat space. Finite-difference relations, which we refer to as “summation-by-parts relations”, in parallel with the integration-by-parts relations for Feynman loop integrals, are derived to reduce the integrals to a basis. We illustrate the general methodology by explicitly deriving the difference equations and summation-by-parts relations for various tree-level and one-loop Witten diagrams up to the four-point bubble level.

Lepton flavor violation by three units

The conservation of lepton flavor is a prediction of the Standard Model and is still an excellent approximate symmetry despite our observation of neutrino oscillations. Lepton flavor violation by one or two units has been discussed for decades, with several dedicated experiments exploring the vast model landscape but no discoveries so far. Here, we explore operators and processes that violate at least one lepton flavor by three units and identify testable signatures. In the Standard Model effective field theory, such operators already arise at mass dimension 7 and can be tested through their contributions to Michel parameters in leptonic decays. True neutrinoless charged-lepton flavor violation arises at mass dimension 10 and can realistically only be seen in the tau decay channels 𝜏 → $𝑒⁢𝑒⁢𝑒⁢\bar{𝜇}⁢\bar{𝜇}$ or 𝜏 → $𝜇⁢𝜇⁢𝜇\bar{𝑒}\bar{𝑒}$, for example in Belle II. Testable rates for these tau decays require light new particles and subsequently predict an avalanche of remarkably clean but so-far unconstrained collider signatures.

Type-II spacetimes and the double copy for fluids metrics

In our previous paper [Keeler , From Navier-Stokes to Maxwell via Einstein, .] we discussed type-D and type-N fluid-dual spacetimes and provided their associated single copies in the context of the Weyl double copy. In this work we extend our analysis to more general fluids thereby requiring the application of the double-copy picture to type-II spacetimes. By combining our previous type-D and type-N fluids via their associated stream functions we construct an example of a viable type-II double copy. We show that the gravity duals of these fluids perturbatively satisfy Einstein’s equations. We use a near-horizon expansion to identify the type-II double copy for the fluid-dual spacetimes. We show a Maxwell spinor ansatz containing a heterogeneous bispinor component is necessary to provide a viable type-II double copy at the lowest order.

Spectral Constraints on Theories of Colored Particles and Gravity

In this Letter, we consider effective field theories for light fields transforming under the fundamental or adjoint representation of a continuous group. Assuming tree-level completions, we demonstrate that, in the presence of gravity, crossing symmetry combined with twice-subtracted sum rules leads to constraints on the irreducible representations that the ultraviolet degrees of freedom must populate. A spectrum is allowed only if its low energy projection contains the graviton pole. Beautifully, the graviton pole is the anchor of our argument, not an obstruction.

Evolution of Efimov states

The Efimov phenomenon manifests itself as an emergent discrete scaling symmetry in the quantum three-body problem. In the unitarity limit, it leads to an infinite tower of three-body bound states with energies forming a geometric sequence. Here in this work, we study the evolution of these so-called Efimov states using relativistic scattering theory. We identify them as poles of the three-particle S matrix and trace their trajectories in the complex energy plane as they evolve from virtual states through bound states to resonances. We dial the scattering parameters toward the unitarity limit and observe the emergence of the universal scaling of energies and couplings - a behavior known from the non-relativistic case. Interestingly, we find that Efimov resonances follow unusual, cyclic trajectories accumulating at the three-body threshold and then disappear at some values of the two-body scattering length. We propose a partial resolution to this ?missing states? problem.

Consequences of minimal entanglement in bosonic field theories

In this paper, we study a recently discovered connection between scattering that minimally entangles and emergent symmetries. In a perturbative expansion, we have generalized the constraints of minimal entanglement scattering, beyond qubits, to general qudits of dimension d . Interestingly, projecting on any qubit subspaces, the constraints factorize, so that it is consistent to analyze minimal entanglement by looking at all such subspaces. We start by looking at toy models with two scalar fields, finding that minimal entanglement only allows quartic couplings which have instabilities at large field values and no symmetries. For the two Higgs doublet model, by considering H + H − → H + H − scattering, we show that minimal entanglement in this channel does not allow an interacting parameter point with enhanced symmetries. These results show that the connection between minimal entanglement and symmetries depends strongly on the scattering channels analyzed and we speculate on the potential resolutions. Final state interactions for high energy scattering off atomic electrons

We consider the scattering of high energy leptons off bound atomic electrons focusing primarily on final state interactions between the outgoing energetic electron, and the heavy residual charged “debris” in the final state. These effects are inherently absent from calculations for a free electron at rest. Coulomb exchanges are enhanced by the large number of electrons in the atomic debris, and are unsuppressed by nonrelativistic velocities in the debris. We find that these exchanges can be resummed using operator methods, and cancel at the level of the cross section until at least 𝑂⁡(𝛼 3 ). Furthermore, we argue that both final and initial state Coulomb exchanges (enhanced by the number of electrons in the atom) do not affect the cross section until at least 𝑂⁡(𝛼 3 ). Transverse photon couplings to nonrelativistic electrons are proportional to their small velocities, and rotational invariance suppresses their contribution to 𝑂⁡(𝛼 3 ). Our results are relevant for precision experiments involving neutrinos, electrons, positrons, and muons scattering off of atomic electrons in a fixed target.

Five-point functions and the permutation group 𝑆 5

Five-point functions and five-body wave functions play an important role in many areas of nuclear and particle physics, e.g., in 2 →3 scattering processes, in the five-gluon vertex, or in the study of pentaquarks. In this work we consider the permutation group 𝑆 5 to facilitate the description of such objects. We work out the multiplets transforming under irreducible representations of 𝑆 5 and provide compact formulas allowing one to cast the permutations of an object 𝑓 12345 into combinations with definite permutation symmetry. We also give the explicit expressions for the irreducible multiplet products. We consider several practical applications as examples: We arrange the four-momenta and Lorentz invariants of a five-point function into the multiplet structure, we work out the color tensors of the five-gluon vertex in the multiplet notation, and we discuss applications for five-body wave functions like those of pentaquarks.

Asymptotic spinspacetime

We show that Poincaré invariance directly implies the existence of a complexified Minkowski space whose real and imaginary directions unify spacetime and spin, which we dub spinspacetime. Despite the intrinsic noncommutativity of spin, spinspacetime exhibits mutually commuting holomorphic coordinates. Its twistorial construction derives the Newman-Janis shift property of spinning black holes by massive half-Fourier transforming complexified on shell kinematics, which encode a spinning analog of equivalence principle.

Antipodal self-duality of square fishnet graphs

In strongly deformed planar 𝒩 = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory, or fishnet theory, a point-split single-trace correlation function of four dimension-𝑚 scalar operators is given by a single Feynman integral, which involves integrating over locations of a 𝑚 × 𝑚 grid of points. We show that for any integer 𝑚 this square fishnet graph is invariant under the combined action of a kinematic map and the antipode map of the Hopf algebra on multiple polylogarithms; i.e. it possesses an antipodal self-duality.

Single-valued representation of unpolarized and polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at next-to-next-to-leading order

We revisit the recently published analytic results for unpolarized and polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). These expressions for the hard scattering coefficients contain case distinctions in the kinematic (𝑥,𝑧)-plane, splitting the analytic result into four regions. By reexpressing the coefficient functions in terms of single-valued polylogarithms, we remove these case distinctions and can present a unified result valid across the entire kinematic range of SIDIS. This reduces the length of the overall expressions by 30% to 60%.

Scatter of elastic waves by a thin flat elliptical inhomogeneity

Elastodynamic fields of a single, flat, elliptical inhomogeneity embedded in an infinite elastic medium subjected to plane time harmonic waves are studied. Scattered displacement amplitudes and stress intensities are obtained in series form for an incident wave in an arbitrary direction. The cases of a penny shaped crack and an elliptical crack are given as examples. The analysis is valid for alpha a up to about two, where alpha is longitudinal wave number and a is a typical geometric parameter.

Microwave thermal emission from periodic surfaces

The emissivity of a periodic surface is calculated from one minus the reflectivity by using the reciprocity principle. The reflectivity consists of the sum of all scattered power as determined from the modal theory which obeys both the principle of reciprocity and the principle of energy conservation. The theoretical results are matched to experimental data obtained from brightness temperature measurements as functions of viewing angle for soil moisture in plowed fields. The threshold phenomenon with regard to the appearing and disappearing of modes in their contributions to the scattered field amplitudes is discussed in connection with the theoretical results. It is shown that this approach for calculating the emissivity greatly reduces computational efforts by requiring substantially smaller matrix sizes.

Broad-band linear polarization in cool stars. II - Amplitude and wavelength dependence for magnetic and scattering regions

We have developed a model to estimate the amplitude and wavelength dependence of broad-band linear polarization (BLP) from magnetic regions on cool stars. The model includes corrections both for line blends and for the partial cancellation of polarization in the vector sum over the stellar disk. Our results agree with recent calculations of BLP in the red, but show larger amplitudes and a different wavelength dependence in the blue. We find that the detailed wavelength dependence of the polarization is complex and varies with effective temperature and gravity due to changes in line blanketing. The BLP amplitudes depend strongly on field strength, blanketing, and magnetic region filling factor and geometry. We make rough estimates of the maximum BLP for stars of various spectral types and demonstrate a method for deriving a lower limit to the filling factor from the maximum observed BLP. This lower limit is related to the fractional area covered by the spatially asymmetric component of magnetic regions.
