Superstructures and Superconductivity Linked with Pd Intercalation in Nb 2 Pd x Se 5

Single crystals of Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 have been grown covering a broad range of palladium stoichiometries, from x = 0.68 to x = 0.95 (Pd2 occupancies 0.36 and 0.90 respectively). Miscibility gaps in the Pd stoichiometry range are related to superstructures resulting from staged filling and ordering of the partially filled Pd atom site (Pd2, Wyckoff site 2a). For Pd2 near 1/2 occupancy, a superstructure based on an incommensurate occupation wave with modulation along the monoclinic b-axis is identified. Here, a superconducting dome is found for Pd2 occupancies above 0.58, with maximum Tc for Pd2 occupancy of approximately 2/3. DFT calculations for the fully and 1/2 occupied Pd2 site show that Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 can be considered an intercalation compound for Pd2 occupancy above the minimum required for structural stability.

Optoelectronic and material properties of solution-processed Earth-abundant Cu 2 BaSn(S, Se) 4 films for solar cell applications

Copper barium thioselenostannate, Cu 2 BaSnS 4-x Se x (CBTSSe), absorbers employ low-toxicity and abundant metals while offering low-cost manufacturing options, controllable stoichiometry and band gap tunability (from 2 eV at x = 0 to 1.55 eV at x = 3). CBTSSe can therefore be considered a prospective candidate for maintaining or improving upon the advantages of already commercialized Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se) 2 (CIGSSe) and CdTe absorbers. Here, we focus on solution-deposited stoichiometric CBTSSe films with band gap of 1.59 eV (x ≈ 3) and explore the fundamental film properties. Temperature- and excitation-dependent photoluminescence studies reveal a dominant defect emission at ~1.5 eV and a second deep defect feature at 1.15 eV. From time-resolved terahertz measurements, we find a charge carrier (electron and hole sum) mobility of ~140 cm 2 /Vs—i.e., comparable to values in CIGSSe or Cu 2 ZnSnS 4-x Se x (CZTSSe)—as well as a two-component minority carrier lifetime. A longer-lived lifetime component (~2 ns) arises from bulk recombination. However, strong recombination at the (bare) surface leads to a ~50 ps lifetime, inferior to state-of-the-art CIGSSe or CZTSSe absorbers. This recombination issue may worsen for CBTSSe/CdS interfaces, due to a cliff-like band alignment with 0.6 eV band offset, as revealed by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy. A low number of charge carriers within the absorber further contributes to a high series resistance. Employing these films, we also report the highest performance achieved from solution-processed trigonal CBTSSe thin-film photovoltaic devices, with open circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, fill factor and efficiency of 470 mV, 14.3 mA/cm 2 , 43.6% and 2.9%, respectively. The physical measurements provided on the stoichiometric solution-processed CBTSSe absorber further point to critical areas for future improvement of CBTSSe and related photovoltaic cells in the quest for higher efficiency devices based on earth abundant metals.

Competition between Hydrogen and Chalcogen Bonding in Homodimers of Chalcogen Hydrides (H 2 X) 2 , X = O, S, Se, Te

The structural and chemical bonding motifs manifested by the competition between hydrogen and chalcogen bonding in the homodimers of chalcogen hydrides (H 2 X) 2 , where X = O, S, Se, Te have been characterized using high-level electronic structure calculations and analysis of the electron density based on Quasi-atomic orbital (QUAO) and the Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) methods. The QUAO analysis clearly identifies a three-center interaction responsible for either hydrogen or chalcogen bonds: in the former, the σ-bond connecting the donor and hydrogen atom participating in the hydrogen bond interacts with the lone pair on the nucleophile acceptor via the hydrogen atom, while in the latter this same σ-bond interacts with the nucleophile lone pair via the donor chalcogen. The number of minimum energy structures increase dramatically from one for (H 2 O) 2 , three for (H 2 S) 2 , four for (H 2 Se) 2 , and finally six for (H 2 Te) 2 . Furthermore, the emergence of the chalcogen-bonded arrangements appears for (H 2 S) 2 with their subsequent energetic stabilization over the hydrogen-bonded minima manifesting in (H 2 Se) 2 and (H 2 Te) 2 . In particular, one of the (H 2 S) 2 , two of the (H 2 Se) 2 , and three of the (H 2 Te) 2 dimers are chalcogen bonded. Induction plays a small but important role in stabilizing hydrogen over chalcogen-bonded structures, while dispersion is more important for chalcogen bonds.

Evidence for a robust sign-changing s-wave order parameter in monolayer films of superconducting Fe (Se,Te)/Bi 2 Te 3

The Fe-based superconductor Fe (Se,Te) combines non-trivial topology with unconventional superconductivity and may be an ideal platform to realize exotic states such as high-order topological corner modes and Majorana modes. Thin films of Fe (Se,Te) are particularly important for device fabrication and phase sensitive transport measurements. While bulk Fe (Se,Te) has been extensively studied, the nature of the superconducting order parameter in the monolayer limit has not yet been explored. In this work, we study monolayer films of Fe (Se,Te) on Bi 2 Te 3 with scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Monolayer Fe (Se,Te)/Bi 2 Te 3 heterostructures host a multigap superconducting state that strongly resembles the bulk. Analysis of the phase-referenced quasiparticle interference signal reveals a sign-changing s-wave order parameter similar to the bulk as well as a unique pattern of sign changes which have not been observed in the bulk. Our work establishes monolayer Fe (Se,Te)/Bi 2 Te 3 as a robust multi-band unconventional superconductor and sets the stage for explorations of non-trivial topology in this highly-tunable system.

Sulfidation and selenidation of nickel nanoparticles

Abstract Transition metal chalcogenide nanoparticles (NPs) are of interest for energy applications, including batteries, supercapacitors, and electrocatalysis. Many methods have been established for synthesizing Ni NPs, and conversion chemistry to form Ni oxide and phosphides from template Ni NPs is well‐understood. Sulfidation and selenidation of Ni NPs have been much less explored, however. We report a method for the conversion of Ni template NPs into sulfide and selenide product NPs using elemental sulfur, 1‐hexadecanthiol, thiourea, trioctylphosphine sulfide, elemental selenium, and selenourea. While maintaining mole ratios of 2 mmol sulfur/selenium precursor: mmol Ni, products with phases of Ni 3 S 2 , Ni 9 S 8 , NiS, NiSO 4 ·6H 2 O, Ni 3 S 4 , Ni 3 Se 2 , and NiSe have been obtained. The products have voids that form through the Kirkendall effect during interdiffusion. Trends relating the chemical properties of the precursors to the phases of the products have been identified. While some precursors contained phosphorus, there was no significant incorporation of phosphorus in any of the products. An increase of the NP size during sulfidation and selenidation is consistent with ripening. The application of Ni sulfide and selenide NPs as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction is also demonstrated.

First-principles derivation of magnetic interactions in the triangular quantum spin liquid candidates KYb C h 2 ( C h = S , Se , Te ) and A YbSe 2 ( A = Na , Rb )

The AYb Ch 2 (A=alkali metal, Ch=chalcogen) delafossites are a family of crystals which have a triangular lattice of effective S=1/2 moments on their Yb atoms. They hold great promise for the realization of the triangular quantum spin liquid state because of their defect-minimized growth and the ability to interchange chemical constituencies among the family. Here we use ab initio computations to evaluate the exchange couplings of four realized (and one theoretical) rhombohedral delafossite structures and examine the influence of chemical substitution on promoting the development of a quantum spin liquid state. We find good agreement with experiment regarding the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J 1 , but our calculations underestimate J 2 .

Nonsuperconducting electronic ground state in pressurized BaFe 2 S 3 and BaFe 2 S 2.5 Se 0.5

In this work, we report a comprehensive study of the spin ladder compound BaFe 2 S 2.5 Se 0.5 using neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, high pressure synchrotron diffraction, and high pressure transport techniques. We find that BaFe 2 S 2.5 Se 0.5 possesses the same C m c m structure and stripe antiferromagnetic order as does BaFe 2 S 3 , but with a reduced Néel temperature of T N = 98 K compared to 120 K for the undoped system, and a slightly increased ordered moment of 1.40 μ B per iron. Additionally, the low-energy spin excitations in BaFe 2 S 2.5 Se 0.5 are likewise similar to those observed in BaFe 2 S 3 . However, unlike the reports of superconductivity in BaFe 2 S 3 below T c ~ 14 K under pressures of 10 GPa or more, we observe no superconductivity in BaFe 2 S 2.5 Se 0.5 at any pressure up to 19.7 GPa. In contrast, the resistivity exhibits an upturn at low temperature under pressure. Furthermore, we show that additional high-quality samples of BaFe 2 S 3 synthesized for this study likewise fail to become superconducting under pressure, instead displaying a similar upturn in resistivity at low temperature. These results demonstrate that microscopic, sample-specific details play an important role in determining the ultimate electronic ground state in this spin ladder system. We suggest that the upturn in resistivity at low temperature in both BaFe 2 S 3 and BaFe 2 S 2.5 Se 0.5 may result from Anderson localization induced by S vacancies and random Se substitutions, enhanced by the quasi-one-dimensional ladder structure.

Role of Magnetic Defects in Tuning Ground States of Magnetic Topological Insulators

Abstract Magnetic defects play an important, but poorly understood, role in magnetic topological insulators (TIs). For example, topological surface transport and bulk magnetic properties are controlled by magnetic defects in Bi 2 Se 3 ‐based dilute ferromagnetic (FM) TIs and MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT)‐based antiferromagnetic (AFM) TIs. Despite its nascent ferromagnetism, the inelastic neutron scattering data show that a fraction of the Mn defects in Sb 2 Te 3 form strong AFM dimer singlets within a quintuple block. The AFM superexchange coupling occurs via Mn–Te–Mn linear bonds and is identical to the AFM coupling between antisite defects and the FM Mn layer in MBT, establishing common interactions in the two materials classes. It is also found that the FM correlations in (Sb 1− x Mn x ) 2 Te 3 are likely driven by magnetic defects in adjacent quintuple blocks across the van der Waals gap. In addition to providing answers to long‐standing questions about the evolution of FM order in dilute TI, these results also show that the evolution of global magnetic order from AFM to FM in Sb‐substituted MBT is controlled by defect engineering of the intrablock and interblock coupling.

Distinguishing bulk and surface recombination in CdTe thin films and solar cells using time-resolved terahertz and photoluminescence spectroscopies

Understanding the nature of recombination and its dependence on defects and interfaces is essential for engineering materials and contacts for higher open circuit voltage (V oc ) and power conversion efficiency in photovoltaic (PV) devices. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) has conventionally been used to evaluate recombination, but carrier redistribution often dominates the response at short times. In this work, we report on the quantification of carrier dynamics and recombination mechanisms by complementary use of both time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy (TRTS) and TRPL combined with numerical modeling of the continuity equations and Poisson’s equation. We have demonstrated this approach using CdTe thin films. A thin film stack with CdTe fabricated by vapor transport deposition and treated with CdCl 2 exhibited a bulk lifetime of 1.7 ± 0.1 ns, negligible CdTe/CdS interface recombination velocity, and back surface recombination velocity of 6.3 ± 1.3 x10 4 cm/s. In contrast, a film stack without CdCl 2 treatment had a bulk lifetime of only 68 ± 12 ps and a higher interface recombination velocity of 4 ± 2 x10 8 cm/s. By determining the locus and mechanisms of performance-limiting recombination, we can accelerate the development of thin-film PVs with higher V oc and efficiency. While the method has been demonstrated here using CdTe, it is also applicable to perovskites, Cu(InGa)Se 2 , Cu2ZnSn(S,Se) 4, and emerging technologies.

Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition Synthesis of Nanolayered Molybdenum Diselenide (MoSe 2 ) Thin Films for Nanoelectronics

Nanolayered molybdenum diselenide (MoSe 2 ) thin films were synthesized by plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD) using molybdenum pentachloride (MoCl 5 ) and diethyldiselenide (C 4 H 10 Se 2 ) precursors. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed horizontally stacked nanolayers near the substrate and vertically oriented nanosheets at the surface of the film. X-ray diffraction confirmed the (002), (100), and (110) reflections of crystalline MoSe 2 , while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed relative atomic concentrations of 33.5% Mo and 66.5% Se, consistent with stoichiometric MoSe 2 . Raman spectra exhibited characteristic E 1g , A 1g , and E$^1_{2g}$ vibrational modes. Field-effect transistors incorporating PE-ALD-grown MoSe 2 as the channel material displayed p-type behavior, demonstrating the potential of nanolayered MoSe 2 for nanoelectronic applications. This work demonstrates the feasibility of low-temperature, stoichiometric growth of nanolayered MoSe 2 by PE-ALD and its direct integration into transistor architectures.

Quantile-Specific Heritability of Inflammatory and Oxidative Stress Biomarkers Linked to Cardiovascular Disease

Purpose: Heritability (h 2 , the proportion of the phenotypic variance attributable to additive genetic effects) is traditionally assumed to be constant throughout the distribution of the phenotype. However, the heritabilities of circulating C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 (PAI-1), and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) concentrations depend upon whether the phenotype is high or low relative to their distributions (quantile-dependent expressivity), which may account for apparent gene–environment interactions. Whether the heritabilities of other inflammatory biomarkers linked to cardiovascular disease are quantile-dependent remain to be determined. Patients and Methods: Quantile-specific offspring-parent (β OP ) and full-sib regression slopes (β FS ) were estimated by applying quantile regression to the age- and sex-adjusted phenotypes of families surveyed as part of the Framingham Heart Study. Quantile-specific heritabilities were calculated as: h 2 =2β OP /(1+r spouse ) and h 2 ={(1+8r spouse β FS ) 0.5 – 1}/(2r spouse ). Results: Heritability (h 2 ± SE) of lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA 2 ) mass concentrations increased from 0.11 ± 0.03 at the 10 th percentile, 0.08 ± 0.03 at the 25 th , 0.12 ± 0.03 at the 50 th , 0.20 ± 0.04 at the 75 th , and 0.26 ± 0.06 at the 90 th percentile, or 0.0023 ± 0.0006 per each one-percent increase in the phenotype distribution (P linear trend = 0.0004). Similarly, h 2 increased 0.0029 ± 0.0011 (P linear trend = 0.01) for sP-selectin, 0.0032 ± 0.0009 (P linear trend = 0.0001) for soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (sICAM-1), and 0.0026 ± 0.0006 for tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 (TNFR2) (P linear trend = 5.0 × 10 -6 ) per each one-percent increase in their distributions when estimated from β OP . Osteoprotegerin and soluble ST2 heritability also increased significantly with increasing percentiles of their distributions when estimated from β FS . Lp-PLA 2 activity, CD40 ligand, TNFα, interleukin-18, and myeloperoxidase heritability showed no significant quantile-dependence. Conclusion: The heritabilities of circulating Lp-PLA 2 -mass, sP-selectin, sICAM-1, TNFR2, osteoprotegerin and soluble ST2 concentrations are quantile-dependent, which may contribute to purported genetic modulations of: 1) sP-selectin’s relationships to venous thrombosis, pulmonary hypertension, type 2 diabetes and atorvastatin treatment; 2) sICAM-I’s relationships to brain abscess and atorvastatin treatment; and 3) Lp-PLA 2 ’s relationships to myocardial infarction and preeclampsia.

3D Lead-Organoselenide-Halide Perovskites and their Mixed-Chalcogenide and Mixed-Halide Alloys

Here, we incorporate Se into the 3D halide perovskite framework using the zwitterionic ligand: SeCYS ( + NH 3 (CH 2 ) 2 Se - ), which occupies both the X - and A + sites in the prototypical ABX 3 perovskite. The new organoselenide-halide perovskites: (SeCYS)PbX 2 (X=Cl, Br) expand upon the recently discovered organosulfide-halide perovskites. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis reveal the average structures of the organoselenide-halide perovskites, whereas the local lead coordination environments and their distributions were probed through solid-state 77 Se and 207 Pb NMR, complemented by theoretical simulations. Density functional theory calculations illustrate that the band structures of (SeCYS)PbX 2 largely resemble those of their S analogs, with similar band dispersion patterns, yet with a considerable band gap decrease. Optical absorbance measurements indeed show band gaps of 2.07 and 1.86 eV for (SeCYS)PbX 2 with X=Cl and Br, respectively. We further demonstrate routes to alloying the halides (Cl, Br) and chalcogenides (S, Se) continuously tuning the band gap from 1.86 to 2.31 eV–straddling the ideal range for tandem solar cells or visible-light photocatalysis. The comprehensive description of the average and local structures, and how they can fine-tune the band gap and potential trap states, respectively, establishes the foundation for understanding this new perovskite family, which combines solid-state and organo-main-group chemistry.

Assessing the roles of Cu- and Ag-deficient layers in chalcopyrite-based solar cells through first principles calculations

Chalcopyrites are a demonstrated material platform for realizing efficient thin-film photovoltaics, with the most well known Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS)-based solar cells exceeding 23%. Several factors, including flexibility in tuning the absorber bandgap, enhanced surface treatments, and the electrically benign nature of common defects are responsible for the existing high performance and future promise in chalcopyrite-based photovoltaic devices. The introduction of Cu-poor phases (also known as ordered-vacancy compounds or OVCs) between the absorber and buffer layers in CIGS solar cells is known to enhance device performance; however, the overall properties and role of OVCs remain poorly understood. Using first principles calculations based on the density functional theory with screened hybrid functionals, here we explore the electronic structure and stability of OVCs and their band offsets with defect-free chalcopyrite layers in Cu- and Ag-based compounds (ABX 2 where A=Cu, Ag; B=In, Ga, Al; and X=S, Se). Using AB 3 X 5 and AB 5 X 8 stoichiometries as model OVC systems, we report on the variation of the bandgap with the A/B ratio and discuss the trends in other Cu- and Ag-based chalcopyrites beyond CuInSe 2 . We find that the valence and conduction bands are lower in energy in OVCs with respect to the parent ABX 2 chalcopyrite owing to a reduced p–d interaction between X and A atoms. We additionally perform device-level simulations to assess the implications of the results, finding that the valence band offsets of OVCs are favorable, while the conduction band offsets of chalcopyrites beyond CuInSe 2 -based absorbers may be detrimental in conventional solar cell device designs.

Porous Cu 2 BaSn(S,Se) 4 Film as a Photocathode Using Non-Toxic Solvent and a Ball-Milling Approach

Cu 2 BaSn(S,Se) 4 (CBTSSe) has been proposed as an alternative to Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) for solar absorbers due to its reduced propensity for antisite disorder and band tailing, while maintaining the desirable characteristics of band gap tunability, earth-abundance, and low toxicity constituent metals. However, current film deposition methods require high-vacuum conditions or toxic solvents, less desirable features for prospective large-scale production. Here, ball milling is demonstrated as a route towards a scalable processing method for CBTSSe, using a precursor ink consisting of common elements Cu 2 S, BaS, Sn, and S in low-toxicity ethanol. A final film with a thickness and average grain size on the order of 1 µm was synthesized with a band gap of 1.56 eV, corresponding to a Cu 2 BaSnS 4-x Se x (x ≈ 3) stoichiometry. A porous CBTSSe photocathode with Pt/TiO 2 /CdS overlayers was fabricated to demonstrate the photocurrent-generating capabilities of the film, yielding current densities of as high as 5.54 mA/cm 2 at 0 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (V/RHE) .

Structural and thermal properties of ultralow thermal conductivity Ba 3 Cu 2 Sn 3 Se 10

The thermal properties of Ba 3 Cu 2 Sn 3 Se 10 were investigated by measurement of the thermal conductivity and heat capacity. The chemical bonding in this diamagnetic material was investigated using structural data from Rietveld refinement and calculated electron localization. This quaternary chalcogenide is monoclinic (P2 1 /c), has a large unit cell with 72 atoms in the primitive cell, and a high local coordination environment. Additionally, the Debye temperature (162 K) and average speed of sound (1666 m s -1 ) are relatively low with a very small electronic contribution to the heat capacity. Ultralow thermal conductivity (0.46 W m -1 K -1 at room temperature) is attributed to the relatively weak chemical bonding and intrinsic anharmonicity, in addition to a large unit cell. This work is part of the continuing effort to explore quaternary chalcogenides with intrinsically low thermal conductivity and identify the features that result in a low thermal conductivity.
