Transport properties and thermal behavior of YbMnSb 2 semimetal above room temperature

Single crystals of ytterbium manganese diantimonide, YbMnSb 2 have been grown from a high-temperature reaction of the elements, employing molten Sb as self-flux. This phase crystallizes in the tetragonal centrosymmetric space group P4/nmm (No. 129) and adopts the ZrCuSiAs structure type. Here, the structure consists of Sb-based square nets and PbO-type layers formed by fused [MnSb 4/4 ] tetrahedra. YbMnSb 2 is stable under ambient atmosphere and incongruently melts at a temperature of ca. 1120 K. In the temperature range from 300 K to 450 K, the electrical resistivity of the as-grown single-crystalline material is as low as 3.2 mΩ cm, while its thermopower is as high as 180 μV/K. As such, YbMnSb 2 shows promise for thermoelectric applications in the mid-temperature region, with an estimated power factor of 0.85–0.95 mW/(m K 2 ).

Effects of Anisotropic Strain on Spin–Orbit Torque Produced by the Dirac Nodal Line Semimetal IrO 2

We report spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance studies of the efficiency of the damping-like (ξ DL ) spin–orbit torque exerted on an adjacent ferromagnet film by current flowing in epitaxial (001) and (110) IrO 2 thin films. IrO 2 possesses Dirac nodal lines (DNLs) in the band structure that are gapped by spin–orbit coupling, which could enable a very high spin Hall conductivity, σ SH . We find that the (001) films do exhibit exceptionally high ξ DL ranging from 0.45 at 293 K to 0.65 at 30 K, which sets the lower bounds of σ SH to be 1.9 × 10 5 and 3.75 × 10 5 Ω –1 m –1 , respectively, 10 times higher and of opposite sign than the theoretical prediction. Furthermore, ξ DL and σ SH are substantially reduced in anisotropically strained (110) films. Here, we suggest that this high sensitivity to anisotropic strain is because of changes in contributions to σ SH near the DNLs.

Direct measurement of ferroelectric polarization in a tunable semimetal

Abstract Ferroelectricity, the electrostatic counterpart to ferromagnetism, has long been thought to be incompatible with metallicity due to screening of electric dipoles and external electric fields by itinerant charges. Recent measurements, however, demonstrated signatures of ferroelectric switching in the electrical conductance of bilayers and trilayers of WTe 2 , a semimetallic transition metal dichalcogenide with broken inversion symmetry. An especially promising aspect of this system is that the density of electrons and holes can be continuously tuned by an external gate voltage. This degree of freedom enables measurement of the spontaneous polarization as free carriers are added to the system. Here we employ capacitive sensing in dual-gated mesoscopic devices of bilayer WTe 2 to directly measure the spontaneous polarization in the metallic state and quantify the effect of free carriers on the polarization in the conduction and valence bands, separately. We compare our results to a low-energy model for the electronic bands and identify the layer-polarized states that contribute to transport and polarization simultaneously. Bilayer WTe 2 is thus shown to be a fully tunable ferroelectric metal and an ideal platform for exploring polar ordering, ferroelectric transitions, and applications in the presence of free carriers.

Chirality manipulation of ultrafast phase switches in a correlated CDW-Weyl semimetal

Light engineering of correlated states in topological materials provides a new avenue of achieving exotic topological phases inaccessible by conventional tuning methods. Here we demonstrate a light control of correlation gaps in a model charge-density-wave (CDW) and polaron insulator (TaSe 4 ) 2 I recently predicted to be an axion insulator. Our ultrafast terahertz photocurrent spectroscopy reveals a two-step, non-thermal melting of polarons and electronic CDW gap via the fluence dependence of a longitudinal circular photogalvanic current. This helicity-dependent photocurrent reveals continuous ultrafast phase switches from the polaronic state to the CDW (axion) phase, and finally to a hidden Weyl phase as the pump fluence increases. Additional distinctive attributes aligning with the light-induced switches include: the mode-selective coupling of coherent phonons to the polaron and CDW modulation, and the emergence of a non-thermal chiral photocurrent above the pump threshold of CDW-related phonons. The demonstrated ultrafast chirality control of correlated topological states here holds large potentials for realizing axion electrodynamics and advancing quantum-computing applications.
