NEAMS Milestone Report: M2MS–20OR030102 FW–CADIS PWR Ex-Core Analysis with Shift Through VERA

This report presents the work completed for the NEAMS milestone M2MS–20OR030102 titled "FW–CADIS PWR Ex-Core Analysis with Shift through VERA." The work completed for this milestone includes the implementation, integration, and optimization of memory and performance improvement methods in Shift for fully coupled ex-core calculations through Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA). Fully coupled in this context means the transfer of moderator boron concentration, pin-wise fission source, depleted compositions, temperatures, and moderator densities from MPACT (with COBRA-TF (CTF)) to Shift. The ability to run ex-core calculations with VERA has been enabled and used for several years by Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors (CASL) partners. However, this implementation was limited and potentially computationally burdensome. This work has enabled the ability to run higher-fidelity ex-core calculations on moderate computing clusters by focusing on multithreading, domain decomposition, and Forward-Weighted CADIS (FW-CADIS) variance reduction. Tests performed on small cores, a small modular reactor (SMR), and CASL progression problems show very promising memory reduction and computational performance. Recommendations for settings when running fully coupled high-fidelity ex-core calculations with VERA are documented. Without these optimization methods, many processors on a compute node would be left unused for the entire ex-core calculation. Therefore, these methods enable the user to better use the resources available and reduce computation time.

Implementation of the Windowed Multipole Method in Shift

The windowed multipole (WMP) method has been implemented in the Shift Monte Carlo (MC) radiation transport code with support for both CPU and GPU execution. With this method, small WMP data libraries (~100 MB) can be used to accurately Doppler broaden cross sections to arbitrary temperatures “on the fly” during an MC simulation. This approach yields significant memory savings relative to traditional methods, making it ideal for high-fidelity analysis such as coupled multiphysics simulations. This document provides the exact forms of the WMP equations used by Shift, as well as a detailed description of the structure of WMP HDF5 data files provided by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Shift implementation has been validated against the OpenMC radiation transport code, with excellent agreement demonstrated for 70 nuclides across an operative range of temperatures. CPU and GPU performance testing using a small module reactor (SMR) problem demonstrated that this method decreases the neutron tracking rate by a factor of ~2 on the Summitdev machine. A new set of WMP data being developed in-house will employ novel methods to improve tracking rates.

Demonstration of Monte Carlo Reference Equilibrium Core Solutions for Pebble Bed Reactors Using Shift in kugelpy

This report describes how to produce reference solutions for the equilibrium core search of pebble bed reactors using the pyrates Python library. The pyrates library uses the kugelpy methodology to perform running-in calculations to reach an equilibrium core. This approach relies on full-core Monte Carlo neutron transport calculations and the shifting of fuel pebble inventory through the reactor to simulate pebble movement in the core from one step to the next of a running-in scenario. In addition to the use of Serpent for the Monte Carlo neutron transport calculations, as part of this work, updates for the use of the Shift Monte Carlo code were integrated into the official pyrates GitHub repository. Comparisons of running-in simulations for a generic pebble bed reactor produced by using pyrates with Serpent and Shift are shown. Although consistent trends are shown between the use of the two Monte Carlo codes, the limiting factor in either calculation is the computation time due to the need to perform several hundred full-core neutron transport calculations before an equilibrium core is reached.

Equatorward shift of the cleft during magnetospheric substorms as observed by Isis 1

Isis 1 satellite observations of the cleft position during magnetospheric substorms show that the cleft shifts equatorward as the interplanetary B sub z component turns southward and substorm activity increases and that it shifts back toward higher latitudes as substorm activity subsides and B sub z returns northward. Also, unusually low latitudes for the cleft (less than 70 deg invariant latitude) were found during geomagnetic storms with significant Dst values and large negative B sub z values. Significant shifts occur in the cleft location with no accompanying effect seen in the AE index; however, B sub z is observed to be southward during these periods.

Shift measurements of the stark-broadened ionized helium lines at 1640 and 1215 angstrom

Time-resolved measurements were made of the shifts of the ionized helium lines at 1,640 A (n = 3 approaches 2) and 1,215 A (n = 4 approaches 2), and of the Stark profile of the 1,215 A wavelength line. An electromagnetic shock tube was used as a light source. The plasma conditions corresponded to electron temperatures of approximately 3.5 eV and electron densities of 0.8 to 1.8 x 10 to the 17th power/cubic cm. The measured shifts fell between two previous estimates of plasma polarization shifts. The measured Stark width of the 1,215 A wavelength line was up to 30% greater than the theoretical width.

Effect of the mass center shift for force-free flexible spacecraft

For a spinning flexible spacecraft the mass center generally shifts relative to the nominal undeformed position. It is thought that this shift of center complicates spacecraft stability analysis. It is proved, on the basis of results achieved by Meirovitch and Calico (1972), that for the general class of force-free single-spin flexible spacecraft it is possible to ignore this shift of center without affecting the stability criteria in any significant way. A new theorem on inequalities for quadratic forms is proved to demonstrate the validity of the stability analysis.

Doppler wavelength shifts of transition zone lines measured in Skylab solar spectra

Wavelengths of lines of the transition-zone ions Si IV, C IV, O IV, N V, and O V are observed to be redshifted relative to the wavelengths of chromospheric lines in XUV spectra obtained from the normal-incidence spectrograph on Skylab. The spectra cover the wavelength range from 1200 to 1565 A and were obtained with the slit positioned over chromospheric network and cell regions, on coronal holes, and above the limb. The network-area and coronal-hole spectra were obtained near the disk center. Only some of the spectra show redshifted transition-zone lines. The observed shifts are between 0.03 and 0.08 A, implying velocities of 15 km/s or less. The amount of wavelength shift does not always appear to be the same for lines of different ions. The shifts imply that descending plasma in the solar atmosphere produces more emission than ascending plasma at temperatures between approximately 70,000 and 200,000 K.

Fluid-electrolyte shifts and maximal oxygen uptake in man at simulated altitude /2,287 m/

Experiments were conducted on six trained distance runners (21-23 yr) subjected to an eight-day dietary control at sea level, followed by an eight-day stay in an altitude chamber (2287-m altitude) and a four-day recovery at sea level. Fluid and electrolyte shifts during exercise at altitude were evaluated to gain insight into the mechanism of reduction in working capacity. The results are discussed in terms of resting fluid volumes and blood constituents, maximal exercise variables, and maximal exercise fluid-electrolyte shifts. Since there are no significant changes in fluid balance or resting plasma volume (PV) at altitude, it is concluded that neither these nor the excessive PV shifts with exercise contribute to the reduction in maximal oxygen uptake at altitude. During altitude exposure the percent loss in PV is found to follow the percent reduction in maximal oxygen uptake; however, on the first day of recovery the percent change in PV remains depressed while maximal oxygen uptake returns to control levels.

A temporary threshold shift for self-motion detection following sustained, oscillating linear acceleration

Thresholds for detecting linear motion (self-motion) increased following exposure of human observers to sustained linear oscillation (fatiguing stimulus) at 0.26 Hz and approximately 0.5 G peak-to-peak for durations up to 30 min. Recovery to preexposure levels took place over a period of 10 to 15 min following the sustained oscillation termination. Differences in threshold shift magnitudes following sustained oscillation in various orientations support the interpretation that the observed threshold shifts resulted from fatigue of the utricular otolith receptors. Threshold shifts were not obtained following exposure of the human observers to sustained, unidirectional linear acceleration (2G) for durations up to 10 min with a centrifuge. The results of this study suggest a previously unobserved response property of the otolith organs, namely, that these organs can be fatigued in a manner analogous to other receptor systems.

Frequency shifts of an electric-dipole resonance near a conducting surface

The resonance frequency of an electric dipole placed near a conducting surface is shifted by the dipole-surface interaction. The observation and measurement of these shifts at optical frequencies is reported for an experimental system that consists of a metal-island film spaced a distance d from a continuous Ag film. The dependence of the shift in the frequency of the island resonance on d shows good agreement with that predicted by a classical theory of the dipole-surface interaction.

Continuous blood densitometry - Fluid shifts after graded hemorrhage in animals

Rapid fluid shifts in four pigs and two dogs subjected to graded hemorrhage are investigated. Arterial blood density (BD), mean arterial pressure (MAP), central venous pressure (CVP), arterial plasma density (PD), hematocrit (Hct) and erythrocyte density were measured. The apparatus and mechancial oscillator technique for measuring density are described. Fluid shifts between red blood cells and blood plasma and alterations in the whole-body-to-large vessel Hct, F(cell) are studied using two models. The bases of the model calculations are discussed. A decrease in MAP, CVP, and BP is detected at the beginning of hemorrhaging; continued bleeding results in further BD decrease correlating with volume displacement. The data reveal that at 15 ml/kg blood loss the mean PD and BD dropped by 0.99 + or - 0.15 and 2.42 + or 0.26 g/liter, respectively, and the Hct dropped by 2.40 + or 0.47 units. The data reveal that inward-shifted fluid has a higher density than normal ultrafiltrate and/or there is a rise in the F(cell) ratio. It is noted that rapid fluid replacement ranged from 5.8 + or - 0.8 to 10.6 + or - 2.0 percent of the initial plasma volume.

Strength, Width, and Pressure Shift Measurements of 54 Lines in the Oxygen A-Band

The absorption band of molecular oxygen, centered at 760]en1] nm, is the atmospheric absorber for the Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) systems used to measure atmospheric temperature, pressure, and density. To provide accurate line parameters for such systems, a careful spectroscopic study was made of the A-band, with measurements of line strengths, widths, pressure-induced frequency shifts, and collisional narrowing effects. The width and shift parameters were measured over a temperature range of -20 to 100 C so that the temperature dependence of these parameters can also be determined. To analyze the results, a least-squares fiting routine was written to fit standard line profiles to the observed profiles. These measurements, which include the first observations of pressure shifts and collisional narrowing in the band, are an important contribution to lidar system utilizing the A-band.

Shifting Of Image Fields For Better Stereoscopic TV Images

Concept for shifting horizontal positions of TV image fields of stereoscopic TV display reduces stereoscopic depth distorting while increasing stereoscopic depth resolution of images. Applicable to form of stereoscopic TV in which two views of scene presented by two video cameras to different fields of one monitor. According to concept, view of left camera shifts to left, and right camera, to right. Images made to overlap, so observed comfortably. Shifting done by inexpensive electronic circuitry.
