Device measures static friction of magnetic tape

Device measures the coefficient of static friction of magnetic tape over a range of temperatures and relative humidities. It uses a strain gage to measure the force of friction between a reference surface and the tape drawn at a constant velocity of approximately 0.0001 inch per second relative to the reference surface.

An improved magnetic tape recorder

Magnetic tape recorder employs a single capstan for simultaneously driving the supply and take-up reels in such a manner that the tape passing between the reels is kept under a predetermined constant tension. This recorder operates with little power and is sufficiently rugged to withstand the severe stresses encountered in high-altitude balloon flight tests.

Magnetic tape transport controlled by rotating transducer heads

Magnetic tape transport includes a common drive for both the tape drive capstans and the rotating record/reproduce heads. Speed of the drive may be varied within a preselected range, but, once selected, remains constant so head and capstan are driven in synchronization and at constant speed.

Simple two-speed tape transport drive

High data rate storage system B tape transport fits to existing hysteresis motor thus reducing flutter, lowering assembly cost, simplifying assembly process and increasing reliability. Motor may be used on any tape recorder or similar device having two speed ratio of up to 32 to 1.

Design study for multi-channel tape recorder system, volume 1

The means of storing multispectral, high resolution sensor data on an Earth observing satellite are studied. It is concluded that this is best done digitally on a multi-track, longitudinal, magnetic tape recorder. The machine proposed will store 8 X 10 to the 10th power bits of data on 1040 m of 51 mm-wide magnetic tape mounted on two co-planar reels.

Recovery of recordings from heat damaged magnetic tapes

Damaged tapes can now be repaired at home as long as damage does not extend to layer-to-layer adhesion within tape roll. Splice repaired section into good roll or cassette for copying. Every effort should be made to complete copying on first run, because fidelity in repaired section deteriorates with each repetition.

Multihead measuring tape

By using multihead measuring tape, procedure to obtain length and angle measurement on either wood or metal stock is reduced to one step. Length and angle of measurement can be locked in on measuring device for repetitive measurements. Measuring tape can be used for layout work or to duplicate length and angle of existing stock.

High-data-rate, spacecraft tape recorders.

Description of magnetic head designs, tape transport features, encoding techniques, bit error rates, and data rate capabilities of tape recorders used on board satellites for temporary storage of sensor data. Helical- and transverse-scan rotary head mechanisms used for wideband video signals from imaging systems are explained along with associated electronic circuitry. Decoding and decision procedures employed in multiple-track recorders are outlined, and deskewing electronics are discussed.

Magnetic tape transport for high reliability in space

Studies of tape recorder failure modes in spacecraft tape-recorder applications reveal that failures within the mechanical transport package far outnumber those of the associated electronics. It would, therefore, be desirable to simplify the transport mechanism and to separate the moving parts with a continuously fresh supply of a single inert lubricant medium. The suggestion is made to replace the ball bearings with hydrostatically pressurized fluid film bearings.

Time response simulation of the 1975 Viking Orbiter digital tape recorder

The objective of the present study was to verify and understand in depth the performance of the speed control (frequency loop) servo of the 1975 Viking Orbiter (VO75) digital tape recorder (DTR). The time response method employed is written in the continuous system simulation language (CSSL) for the Univac 1108 computer system. In order to demonstrate the power and flexibility of the graphic interactive simulation program, four aspects of system dynamics are interactively adjusted to arrive at a number of stable system configurations that have significantly different tape transport and/or summing amplifier gain, larger static/dynamic Coulomb friction, and different system lag than envisioned in the nominal design by linear methods. Work is currently underway to derive a new higher-order DST transfer function and to simulate the servo using state-space variable techniques.
