A multi-model assessment of global freshwater temperature and thermoelectric power supply under climate change

Water temperature is a key abiotic factor influencing aquatic ecosystem health and the services provided to both nature and humans. Global water temperature models offer possibilities to improve our understanding of water temperature regimes, which is increasingly important against the backdrop of climate change. Yet, existing studies have predominantly relied on a single model, which can lead to an incomplete representation of uncertainty and potential biases, in addition to limited insight into the range of possible future conditions, which ultimately reduces the robustness of climate impact assessments. Here, we provide a comprehensive assessment of surface freshwater temperature changes from various river and lake models for both past conditions and under future scenarios of climate change. Global models consistently simulate that surface water temperatures are currently 0.5 °C–0.8 °C higher than at the turn of the century (i.e. 1981–2000), and that warming will extend and intensify with future global change throughout the 21st century. While the strength of warming is highly sensitive to the different water temperature models, emissions scenarios and global climate models, our multi-model ensemble shows a global average annual water temperature rise of between +1.3 °C and +4.1 °C by the end of the century. To illustrate a potential societal impact of our results, we evaluate how future changes in discharge and water temperature may affect existing thermoelectric power plants, estimating average annual reductions of 1.5%–6% in global usable capacity by the end of the century. However, with river water temperatures projected to exhibit more pronounced seasonal patterns in the future—especially under the more extreme climate change scenarios and during summer months in the Northern Hemisphere—intra-annual reductions in usable capacity can be much more severe. Given the challenges associated with (large-scale) adaptation to control water temperature regimes, strong climate change mitigation is crucial for minimising water temperature rises and its associated negative impacts on humankind and ecosystems.

Thermoelectric transport of the half-filled lowest Landau level in a p -type Ge/SiGe heterostructure

In this work, we investigate the thermoelectric transport properties of the half-filled lowest Landau level v = 1 / 2 in a gated two-dimensional hole system in a strained Ge/SiGe heterostructure. The electron-diffusion dominated regime is achieved below 600 mK, where the diffusion thermopower S x x d at v = 1 / 2 shows a linear temperature dependence. In contrast, the diffusion-dominated Nernst signal S x y d of v = 1 / 2 is found to approach zero, which is independent of the measurement configuration (sweeping magnetic field at a fixed hole density or sweeping the density by a gate at a fixed magnetic field).

Thermoelectric power of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev islands: Probing Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in quantum matter experiments

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes electrons with random and all-to-all interactions and realizes a many-body state without quasiparticle excitations and a nonvanishing extensive entropy $S_0$ in the zero-temperature limit. Its low-energy theory coincides with the low-energy theory of near-extremal charged black holes with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy $S_0$. Several mesoscopic experimental configurations realizing SYK quantum dynamics over a significant intermediate temperature scale have been proposed. We investigate quantum thermoelectric transport in such configurations and describe low-temperature crossovers out of SYK criticality into regimes either with Fermi liquid behavior, with a Coulomb blockade, or criticality associated with Schwarzian quantum gravity fluctuations. In this work, our results show that thermopower measurements can serve as a direct probe for $S_0$.

Long-Term Stability of PVD/Sputtered Au Electrical Contacts to Thermoelectric Bi 2 Te 2 : Re-evaluation of SAND2015-7203

The fabrication of long-lived electrical contacts to thermoelectric Bi 2 Te 3 -based modules is a challenging problem due to chemical incompatibilities and rapid diffusion rates. Previously, technical guidance from SAND report 2015-7203 selected electroplated Au as the preferred method for fabrication of long-lived contacts because of concerns that the grain structure of sputtered/physical vapor deposited (PVD) Au contacts can evolve during aging. We have re- evaluated PVD Au contacts and show that they are appropriate for long-life service. We measure grain size and morphology at different aging times under accelerated temperature gradient conditions, and we show that the PVD Au contacts are stable and remain relatively unchanged. The PVD Au fabricated here is not subject to the deterioration observed in the previous report.

Flash Diffusivity Measurement of Semi-Porous Insulation Material Intended for Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators

This research involves the analysis of flash-heating data pursuant to find the thermal diffusivity of a semi-porous insulation material (Min-K) that is being considered for use in a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG). An RTG uses radioactive nuclear fuel to produce electricity through a temperature difference imposed on a bimetallic thermocouple. Insulation is required to protect sensitive equipment from high temperatures and to conserve heat in the fuel. Using flash diffusivity temperature data, various simulations were fitted in order to find the most appropriate heat transfer model for the experiments. Four models were allowed to compete and the standard deviation of the residuals were compared for each model in evaluating model performance. The residuals are simply the difference in temperatures between the measurements and the mathematical models at each measurement point.

Machine Learning Chemical Guidelines for Engineering Electronic Structures in Half-Heusler Thermoelectric Materials

Half-Heusler materials are strong candidates for thermoelectric applications due to their high weighted mobilities and power factors, which is known to be correlated to valley degeneracy in the electronic band structure. However, there are over 50 known semiconducting half-Heusler phases, and it is not clear how the chemical composition affects the electronic structure. While all the n-type electronic structures have their conduction band minimum at either the Γ - or X -point, there is more diversity in the p-type electronic structures, and the valence band maximum can be at either the Γ -, L -, or W -point. Here, we use high throughput computation and machine learning to compare the valence bands of known half-Heusler compounds and discover new chemical guidelines for promoting the highly degenerate W -point to the valence band maximum. We do this by constructing an “orbital phase diagram” to cluster the variety of electronic structures expressed by these phases into groups, based on the atomic orbitals that contribute most to their valence bands. Then, with the aid of machine learning, we develop new chemical rules that predict the location of the valence band maximum in each of the phases. These rules can be used to engineer band structures with band convergence and high valley degeneracy.

Integration of Thermoelectric Modules to Vapor Compression Systems

This paper describes the technology of a thermoelectric (TE) integrated heat pump. It uses a TE heat pump to subcool the refrigerant liquid before entering the evaporator to enlarge the evaporating capacity; and elevate the heat in the refrigerant flow to a supplemental heating coil and discharge the capacity to the indoor air flow. Using the DOE/ORNL Heat Pump Design Model, four system configurations were modelled on a baseline two-speed heat pump, the baseline heat pump with adding a supplemental coil, the TE integrated heat pump having one stage TE heating to control a 20R liquid refrigerant temperature drop; and having two stages TE heating to control up to 40R temperature drop. The system models were used to produce performance curves for EnergyPlus building energy simulations. We selected template residential buildings, poorly insulated: pre-1990 buildings, and well-insulated: IECC2021 buildings; in five cold climate zones: 5A, 5B, 6A, 6B, 7. The building energy simulations demonstrated energy saving potentials, utility cost reductions and estimated payback periods.

Thermoelectric coatings for waste heat recovery and photo-thermal power

An energy harvesting system for collecting energy from sources of thermal energy that exist in the environment and convert the energy to electricity. The system has N-P junctions mounted on the outer surface of a conduit, pipe or flue. A hot medium flows through the conduit, pipe or flue. The p-n junctions operate as thermoelectric power generators. Heat absorbed at the p-n junctions increases the kinetic energy of charge carriers causing migration of the charge carriers. This thermally-driven migration of charge carriers is used to drive an electrical current in an external circuit.

Experimental Investigation on Heating Performance of a Cold Climate Thermoelectric-Assisted Heat Pump

To accelerate the electrification of air source heat pumps (ASHPs) in cold climates across the United States, various initiatives have been launched to enhance the effectiveness of ASHPs. One avenue of research involves incorporating thermoelectric (TE) technology into vapor compression refrigeration cycles. This study aims to assess the heating performance of a cold climate ASHP by employing TE modules as a liquid line subcooler. The tested system is a nominal 4.5-ton split heat pump utilizing R410A, equipped with a scroll compressor and an accumulator. An electronic expansion valve was employed for both cooling and heating modes. Two configurations of TE sub-coolers, one utilizing 2 TE bundles and the other 4 TE bundles, were integrated into the liquid line of the tested system. The heating performance of these configurations was evaluated. The results revealed that activating the TE subcooler led to a notable increase in total heat capacity, reaching 1318 W at -15.0 °C and 1164 W at -19.0 °C. The corresponding TE coefficients of performance (COPs) were 1.76 and 1.63, respectively. The activation of the TE sub-cooler resulted in a slight reduction in the overall system COP, with a decrease ranging from -2.6% to -4.2% for these two temperatures. The system COPs were measured at 2.10 and 1.86 for -15.0 °C and -19.0 °C, respectively. This prototype demonstrated a significant augmentation in heating capacity with a minimal sacrifice in COP.
