WSi2 in Si(1-x)Ge(x) Composites: Processing and Thermoelectric Properties

Traditional SiGe thermoelectrics have potential for enhanced figure of merit (ZT) via nano-structuring with a silicide phase, such as WSi2. A second phase of nano-sized silicides can theoretically reduce the lattice component of thermal conductivity without significantly reducing the electrical conductivity. However, experimentally achieving such improvements in line with the theory is complicated by factors such as control of silicide size during sintering, dopant segregation, matrix homogeneity, and sintering kinetics. Samples were prepared using powder metallurgy techniques; including mechano-chemical alloying, via ball milling, and spark plasma sintering for densification. Processing, micro-structural development, and thermoelectric properties will be discussed. Additionally, couple and device level characterization will be introduced.

Suppressing Charged Cation Antisites via Se Vapor Annealing Enables p-Type Dopability in AgBiSe 2 –SnSe Thermoelectrics

Cation disordering is commonly found in multinary cubic compounds, but its effect on electronic properties has been neglected because of difficulties in determining the ordered structure and defect energetics. An absence of rational understanding of the point defects present has led to poor reproducibility and uncontrolled conduction type. AgBiSe 2 is a representative compound that suffers from poor reproducibility of thermoelectric properties, while the origins of its intrinsic n-type conductivity remain speculative. Here, it is demonstrated that cation disordering is facilitated by Bi Ag charged antisite defects in cubic AgBiSe 2 which also act as a principal donor defect that greatly controls the electronic properties. Using density functional theory calculations and in situ Raman spectroscopy, how saturation annealing with selenium vapor can stabilize p-type conductivity in cubic AgBiSe 2 alloyed with SnSe at high temperatures is elucidated. With stable and controlled hole concentration, a peak is observed in the weighted mobility and the density-of-states effective mass in AgBiSnSe 3 , implying an increased valley degeneracy in this system. These findings corroborate the importance of considering the defect energetics for exploring the dopability of ternary thermoelectric chalcogenides and engineering electronic bands by controlling self-doping.

Hybrid Data‐Driven Discovery of High‐Performance Silver Selenide‐Based Thermoelectric Composites

Optimizing material compositions often enhances thermoelectric performances. However, the large selection of possible base elements and dopants results in a vast composition design space that is too large to systematically search using solely domain knowledge. To address this challenge, a hybrid data-driven strategy that integrates Bayesian optimization (BO) and Gaussian process regression (GPR) is proposed to optimize the composition of five elements (Ag, Se, S, Cu, and Te) in AgSe-based thermoelectric materials. Data is collected from the literature to provide prior knowledge for the initial GPR model, which is updated by actively collected experimental data during the iteration between BO and experiments. Within seven iterations, the optimized AgSe-based materials prepared using a simple high-throughput ink mixing and blade coating method deliver a high power factor of 2100 µW m −1 K −2 , which is a 75% improvement from the baseline composite (nominal composition of Ag 2 Se 1 ). In conclusion, the success of this study provides opportunities to generalize the demonstrated active machine learning technique to accelerate the development and optimization of a wide range of material systems with reduced experimental trials.

Mapping Thermoelectric Transport in a Multicomponent Alloy Space

Abstract Interest in high entropy alloy thermoelectric materials is predicated on achieving ultralow lattice thermal conductivity κ L through large compositional disorder. However, here it is shown that for a given mechanism, such as mass contrast phonon scattering, κ L will be minimized along the binary alloy with highest mass contrast, such that adding an intermediate mass atom to increase atomic disorder can increase thermal conductivity. Only when each component adds an independent scattering mechanism (such as adding strain fluctuation to an existing mass fluctuation) is there a benefit. In addition, both charge carriers and heat‐carrying phonons are known to experience scattering due to alloying effects, leading to a trade‐off in thermoelectric performance. Analytic transport models are applied, based on perturbation and effective medium theories, to predict how alloy scattering will affect the thermal and electronic transport across the full compositional range of several pseudo‐ternary and pseudo‐quaternary alloy systems. To do so, a multicomponent extension is demonstrated to both thermal and electronic binary alloy scattering models based on the virtual crystal approximation. Finally, it is shown that common functional forms used in computational thermodynamics can be applied to this problem to further generalize the scattering behavior that is modeled.

High Thermoelectric Performance through Crystal Symmetry Enhancement in Triply Doped Diamondoid Compound Cu 2 SnSe 3

The presence of high crystallographic symmetry and nanoscale defects are favorable for thermoelectrics. With proper electronic structures, a highly symmetric crystal tends to possess multiple carrier channels and promote electrical conductivity without sacrificing Seebeck coefficient. In addition, nanoscale defects can effectively scatter acoustic phonons to suppress thermal conductivity. Here, we report that the triple doping of Cu 2 SnSe 3 leads to a high ZT value of 1.6 at 823 K for Cu 1.85 Ag 0.15 (Sn 0.88 Ga 0.1 Na 0.02 )Se 3 , and a decent average ZT (ZT ave ) value of 0.7 is also achieved for Cu 1.85 Ag 0.15 (Sn 0.93 Mg 0.06 Na 0.01 )Se 3 from 475 to 823 K. Our study reveals: (1) Ag doping on Cu sites generates numerous point defects and greatly decreases lattice thermal conductivity. (2) Doping Mg or Ga converts the monoclinic Cu 2 SnSe 3 into a cubic structure. This symmetry enhancing leads to increase in the effective mass from 0.8 m e to 2.6 m e (m e , free electron mass) and the power factor from 4.3 μW/cm –1 K –2 for Cu 2 SnSe 3 to 11.6 μW/cm –1 K –2 . (3) Na doping creates dense dislocation arrays and nanoprecipitates, which strengthens the phonon scattering. (4) Pair distribution function analysis shows localized symmetry breakdwon in the cubic Cu 1.85 Ag 0.15 (Sn 0.88 Ga 0.1 Na 0.02 )Se 3 . Furthermore, the present work provides a standpoint to design promising thermoelectric materials by synergistically manipulating crystal symmetry and nanoscale defects.

Heating performance of a vapor compression heat pump cascaded with a thermoelectric heat pump

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are widely utilized for heating and cooling in residential buildings; however, their effectiveness in heating mode is compromised during extreme weather conditions. Extensive research endeavors have been undertaken to develop, test, and assess a cost-effective vapor compression ASHP suitable for cold climate regions. Further, this study takes an innovative approach by developing component and system prototypes for a cold climate heat pump. This design combines a thermoelectric heat pump (TEHP) with a traditional residential split ASHP to augment heating capacity in low ambient temperature conditions. The component and system prototypes underwent experimental testing in the psychrometric chambers. The experimental findings revealed a 13.6% to 13.7% increase in total heat pump heating capacity, accompanied by a 3.1% to 5.0% decrease in the coefficient of performance (COP) at ambient temperatures of -15°C and -19°C, when compared to the original ASHP. The COP of the TEHP is relatively constant, ranging from 1.63 to 1.76. This prototype offers a solution to address the challenges associated with reduced heat pump capacity at low ambient temperatures. The experimental results indicated that the lower the ambient temperature, thermoelectric heat pump auxiliary heating can increase the heating efficiency 60% in comparison to electric resistance.

Synthesis of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythuophene) derivatives using three-armed conjugated cross-linker and its thermoelectric properties

Conducting polymer based thermoelectric systems are very effective at harvesting electricity from waste heat with low-temperature gradients relative to environmental temperature. However, although various studies concerning the doping effect exist, there are insufficient reports on the effect of the change in polymer chain structure on the thermoelectric properties. Here we demonstrate different poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-derivative chain structures (such as linear, two-dimensional, co-polymer), by varying the amount of three-armed conjugated cross-linker (1,3,5-tri(2-thienyl)-benzene (TTB)). Further, at a small amount of TTB addition (until 0.5 mM), the electrochemical charge transport of the PEDOT films increased without shift of the UV–Vis absorbing property. However, from higher than 0.5 mM TTB, electrochemical charge transport decreased with blue shift of the UV–Vis absorbing curve. Moreover, the power factor of the PEDOT-derivative films without TTB to a small amount of TTB (0.5 mM) was improved from (27.03 to 49.43) µWm -1 K -2 , and at higher than 0.5 mM TTB concentration, was diminished, respectively, because a small amount of TTB enhanced the π–π interaction of the polymer chains without disrupting the conjugation, while excess TTB molecules blocked conjugation of the polymer.

High-Quality SnSe 2 Single Crystals: Electronic and Thermoelectric Properties

In this work, high-quality SnSe 2 single crystals were successfully synthesized using a temperature gradient method. N-type characteristics and strong anisotropic transport properties of SnSe 2 single crystals were exhibited between the ab plane and the c-axis. At 673 K, the power factor (PF) value along the ab plane is 3.43 μW cm -1 K -2 , while it is 0.92 μW cm -1 K -2 along the c-axis. The ratio between thermal conductivities along the ab plane (κ ab ) and c-axis (κ c ) is on the order of 7.6 at 300 K, while this value is about 5.6 at 673 K. The thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) in the c-axis (0.15) is higher than that (0.1) along the ab plane, according to the ultralow out-of-plane thermal conductivity. The electronic band structure results, which were examined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) predicted the potential of improving the thermoelectric performance of SnSe 2 single crystals by electron doping.

Morphological Ordering of the Organic Layer for High-Performance Hybrid Thermoelectrics

Inorganic-organic hybrids, such as Te-PEDOT:PSS core/shell nanowires, have emerged as a class of promising thermoelectric materials with combined attributes of mechanical flexibility and low cost. However, the poorly understood structure-property relationship calls for further investigation for performance enhancement. Here, through precise treatments of focused electron beam irradiation and thermal annealing on individual Te-PEDOT:PSS nanowires, new, nonchemical mechanisms are introduced to specifically engineer the organic phase, and the measured results provide an unprecedented piece of evidence, confirming the dominant role of organic shell in charge transport. Paired with the Kang-Snyder model and molecular dynamics simulations, this work provides mechanistic insights in terms of heating-enabled morphological ordering of the polymer chains. The measured results show that thermal annealing on the 42 nm nanowire results in a ZT value of 0.78 at 450 K. In conclusion, through leveraging the interfacial self-assembly of the organic phase to construct a high electrical conductivity domain, this work lays out a clear framework for the development of next-generation soft thermoelectrics.

Synthetic Nuances to Maximize n-Type Organic Electrochemical Transistor and Thermoelectric Performance in Fused Lactam Polymers

A series of fully fused n-type mixed conduction lactam polymers p(g 7 NC n N), systematically increasing the alkyl side chain content, are synthesized via an inexpensive, nontoxic, precious-metal-free aldol polycondensation. Employing these polymers as channel materials in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) affords state-of-the-art n-type performance with p(g 7 NC 10 N) recording an OECT electron mobility of 1.20 x 10 -2 cm 2 V -1 s -1 and a μC* figure of merit of 1.83 F cm -1 V -1 s -1. In parallel to high OECT performance, upon solution doping with (4-(1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl)dimethylamine (N-DMBI), the highest thermoelectric performance is observed for p(g 7 NC 4 N), with a maximum electrical conductivity of 7.67 S cm -1 and a power factor of 10.4 μWm -1 K -2 . These results are among the highest reported for n-type polymers. Importantly, while this series of fused polylactam organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs) highlights that synthetic molecular design strategies to bolster OECT performance can be translated to also achieve high organic thermoelectric (OTE) performance, a nuanced synthetic approach must be used to optimize performance. Herein, we outline the performance metrics and provide new insights into the molecular design guidelines for the next generation of high-performance n-type materials for mixed conduction applications, presenting for the first time the results of a single polymer series within both OECT and OTE applications.

Intrinsic nanostructure induced ultralow thermal conductivity yields enhanced thermoelectric performance in Zintl phase Eu2ZnSb2

Abstract The Zintl thermoelectric phase Eu 2 ZnSb 2 has a remarkable combination of high mobility and low thermal conductivity that leads to good thermoelectric performance. The key feature of this compound is a crystal structure that has a Zn-site with a 50% occupancy. Here we use comparison of experimental thermal conductivity measurements and first principles thermal conductivity calculations to characterize the thermal conductivity reduction. We find that partial ordering, characterized by local order, but Zn-site disorder on longer scales, leads to an intrinsic nanostructuring induced reduction in thermal conductivity, while retaining electron mobility. This provides a direction for identifying Zintl compounds with ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and good electrical conductivity.

Extraordinary role of Zn in enhancing thermoelectric performance of Ga-doped n-type PbTe

Although Ga doping can weaken the electron phonon coupling in n-type PbTe, Ga-doped PbTe has a relatively low carrier concentration (n) and high lattice thermal conductivity (κ lat ), resulting in a lower figure of merit (ZT) compared with those of other top-performing n-type PbTe-based thermoelectric materials. Herein, we report the extraordinary role of Zn in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of Ga-doped PbTe. It is discovered that Zn can simultaneously improve the electronic transport properties and decrease the κlat of Ga-doped PbTe, thereby affording a record high ZT avg ~ 1.26 at 400–873 K, with a maximum ZT value of 1.55 at 723 K. The isoelectronic substitution of Zn for Pb in Ga-doped PbTe increases the electrical conductivity and n by inducing the nucleation and growth of Ga 2 Te 3 in the second phase. The formation of Ga 2 Te 3 results in nonstoichiometry and Te deficiency in the PbTe matrix, which increases the number of electron carriers. Additionally, discordant Zn and Ga atoms with displacing off-center from the ideal octahedral positions, as well as Ga 2 Te 3 nanocrystals ranging from 30 to 200 nm coherently embedded into the PbTe matrix effectively weaken the phonon modes and scatter heat-carrying phonons, resulting in a significant reduction in κ lat .

GaSb doping facilitates conduction band convergence and improves thermoelectric performance in n-type PbS

P-type lead chalcogenides have superior thermoelectric performance because they exhibit the energy convergence of several valence bands. However, despite the existence of two conduction bands, there has been no report about conduction band (CB) convergence for n-type counterparts because of the large energy difference between them. Therefore, new strategies are required to manipulate the CBs if enhancing the electrical transport performance of n-type lead chalcogenides is to be achieved. PbS is a highly attractive member of the lead chalcogenides because of its high earth-abundance and low cost. Here, we report that the introduction of GaSb can successfully dope the PbS matrix with Ga and Sb atoms occupying the Pb site in its rock salt structure. GaSb doping leads to conduction band convergence and enlarged effective density of state mass for n-type PbS. This effect results in superior power factor and decreased lattice thermal conductivity caused by the soft phonon modes and point defect scattering of phonons. Consequently, a record-high average power factor PF avg of ~20.4 μW cm –1 K –2 and figure of merit ZT avg of ~0.84 in the temperature range of 400 K to 923 K were obtained, higher than any n- and p-type PbS-based thermoelectric materials.

Grain size and structure distortion characterization of α-MgAgSb thermoelectric material by powder diffraction

Nanostructuring, structure distortion and/or disorder are the main manipulation techniques to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity and improve the figure of merit of thermoelectric materials. A single-phase α-MgAgSb sample, MgAg 0.97 Sb 0.99 , with high thermoelectric performance in near room temperature region was synthesized through a high-energy ball milling with a hot-pressing method. In this work, we report the average grain size of 24-28 nm and the accurate structure distortion, which are characterized by high-resolution neutron diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement data analysis. Both the small grain size and the structure distortion have a contribution to the low lattice thermal conductivity in MgAg 0.97 Sb 0.99 .
