End-to-end test of the electron-proton spectrometer

A series of end-to-end tests were performed to demonstrate the proper functioning of the complete Electron-Proton Spectrometer (EPS). The purpose of the tests was to provide experimental verification of the design and to provide a complete functional performance check of the instrument from the excitation of the sensors to and including the data processor and equipment test set. Each of the channels of the EPS was exposed to a calibrated beam of energetic particles, and counts were accumulated for a predetermined period of time for each of several energies. The counts were related to the known flux of particles to give a monodirectional response function for each channel. The measured response function of the test unit was compared to the response function determined for the calibration sensors from the data taken from the calibration program.

Nondestructive testing of electro thermal devices

This paper describes the results of a recent investigation into 'thermal time constant' nondestructive testing of high reliability electrical fuses. The use of established nondestructive test technology for examining the quality and firing characteristics of electro-explosive devices has been successfully applied to the inspection and prediction of the functional performance of electrical fuses. The technique requires application of a low level current pulse to the electrical fuse with an oscilloscope display of the curve as generated by the temperature coefficient of resistance feedback. The heating curve of temperature vs time is composed of one predominant thermal time constant, which is the product of the test unit's thermal capacity and thermal resistance. It has been found that the quality of the individual electrical fuse, for instance, the relative condition of the critical internal weld or solder joint, can be examined nondestructively.

Design and testing of an energy flywheel for an Integrated Power/Attitude Control System /IPACS/

This paper summarizes the design of a prototype flywheel energy storage assembly developed to evaluate the spacecraft Integrated Power and Attitude Control System (IPACS) concept. In the IPACS application, the flywheel assembly is used for kinetic electrical energy storage as well as conventional angular momentum control. The kinetic energy storage function dictates high rotational speeds which require new approaches to the design of the major components: rotors, motor-generators, bearing systems, and electronics. The paper includes a general description of a NASA-contracted prototype assembly, a discussion of major component design characteristics, and the presentation of preliminary test results as compared with analytical predictions. The test data were obtained from preliminary tests of the NASA prototype assembly as well as from a Rockwell prototype test unit.

Statistical properties of filtered pseudo-random digital sequences

A tutorial presentation of pseudo-random digital sequences, their generation and properties is given. The results of a study of filtered pseudo-random sequences, and their statistical properties are reported. The generator, to be used in a telemetry communications system test unit, must generate its pseudo-random signals by filtering a long digital sequence. Desired signal properties include: (1) approximately Gaussian amplitude probability density function; and (2) signal spectral envelope approximately that of the filter being used in the generator. Filtered maximum-length sequences have been used for this, and similar applications in the past. The results were good for low-pass filtered sequences when the ratio of digital clock frequency to filter cutoff frequency was between fifteen and twenty. However, for higher values of this ratio, a definite skewing of the amplitude density function was observed.

Thermal analyses of the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) scientific instrument using the NASTRAN thermal analyzer (NTA): A general purpose summary

The NTA Level 15.5.2/3, was used to provide non-linear steady-state (NLSS) and non-linear transient (NLTR) thermal predictions for the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) Scientific Instrument (SI). NASTRAN structural models were used as the basis for the thermal models, which were produced by a straight forward conversion procedure. The accuracy of this technique was sub-sequently demonstrated by a comparison of NTA predicts with the results of a thermal vacuum test of the IUE Engineering Test Unit (ETU). Completion of these tasks was aided by the use of NTA subroutines.

High-resolution gray-scale recorder

Electronic circuit makes it possible to obtain gray-scale recordings with good contrast and linearity over entire recording density range for ultrasonic testing unit. Electronic circuit produces square wave of constant voltage but of varying width. Frequency of square-wave pulses can be adjusted to determine optimum pulse frequency.

A directional filter diplexer using optical techniques for millimeter to submillimeter wavelengths

An optical diplexer for injection of a local oscillator into a mixer, useful in the submillimeter and short millimeter range, is described. It has very low insertion loss for both the signal and local oscillator (LO) and high rejection of LO noise. The measured performance of a unit tested at 337 GHz indicates a loss of about 0.2 dB for both inputs and 20-dB noise rejection.

The 25 kW power module evolution study. Part 3: Conceptual designs for power module evolutions. Volume 3: Cost estimates

Cost data generated for the evolutionary power module concepts selected are reported. The initial acquisition costs (design, development, and protoflight unit test costs) were defined and modeled for the baseline 25 kW power module configurations. By building a parametric model of this initial building block, the cost of the 50 kW and the 100 kW power modules were derived by defining only their configuration and programmatic differences from the 25 kW baseline module. Variations in cost for the quantities needed to fulfill the mission scenarios were derived by applying appropriate learning curves.

High G pyrotechnic shock simulation using metal-to-metal impact

A technique for simulating high g level pyrotechnic shocks is described and the results of applying the technique to obtain the MIL-STD-1540A shock spectrum with a maximum acceleration of 18,000g at 2,000 Hz are presented. Designing the resonant beam and plate on which the test unit is mounted, and generating a proper impulsive load on them, were the essentials of the technique. One dimensional stress wave and Euler equations were employed in the design. A metal pendulum hammer was used to generate the impulsive load.

Development and fabrication of a solar cell junction processing system

Development of a pulsed electron beam subsystem, wafer transport system, and ion implanter are discussed. A junction processing system integration and cost analysis are reviewed. Maintenance of the electron beam processor and the experimental test unit of the non-mass analyzed ion implanter is reviewed.

Lewis Pressurized, Fluidized-Bed Combustion Program. Data and Calculated Results

A 200 kilowatt (thermal), pressurized, fluidized bed (PFB) reactor and research test facility were designed, constructed, and operated. The facility was established to assess and evaluate the effect of PFB hot gas effluent on aircraft turbine engine materials that may have applications in stationary powerplant turbogenerators. The facility was intended for research and development work and was designed to operate over a wide range of conditions. These conditions included the type and rate of consumption of fuel (e.g., coal) and sulfur reacting sorbent material: the ratio of feed fuel to sorbent material; the ratio of feed fuel to combustion airflow; the depth of the fluidized reaction bed; the temperature and pressure in the reaction bed; and the type of test unit that was exposed to the combustion exhaust gases.

Software error data collection and categorization

Software errors detected during development of an interactive special purpose editor system were studied. This product was followed during nine months of coding, unit testing, function testing, and system testing. A new error categorization scheme was developed.

Application of optical fibers to wide-band differential interferometry

A broadband differential optical interferometer that uses an optical-fiber waveguide to transmit coherent light to a surface under inspection is discussed. Input laser light is coupled into two single-mode optical fibers in a stationary input optics enclosure. The fibers transmit the light to a small, remote detection head where it is used in a wide-band differential interferometer to detect continuous and pulsed surface-particle displacements. The effective separation between the input optics and the detection head allows simple surface scanning and probe alignment. Detection of simulated acoustic emission pulses by a prototype test unit is reported.

Spacecraft servicing demonstration plan

A preliminary spacecraft servicing demonstration plan is prepared which leads to a fully verified operational on-orbit servicing system based on the module exchange, refueling, and resupply technologies. The resulting system can be applied at the space station, in low Earth orbit with an orbital maneuvering vehicle (OMV), or be carried with an OMV to geosynchronous orbit by an orbital transfer vehicle. The three phase plan includes ground demonstrations, cargo bay demonstrations, and free flight verifications. The plan emphasizes the exchange of multimission modular spacecraft (MMS) modules which involves space repairable satellites. Three servicer mechanism configurations are the engineering test unit, a protoflight quality unit, and two fully operational units that have been qualified and documented for use in free flight verification activity. The plan balances costs and risks by overlapping study phases, utilizing existing equipment for ground demonstrations, maximizing use of existing MMS equipment, and rental of a spacecraft bus.

Effects of nozzle design parameters on the extent of quiet test flow at Mach 3.5

Tests results at the NASA Langley Research Center, involving a Mach 3.5 pilot quiet tunnel, have shown that laminar-layered nozzle walls improve boundary layer stability and reduce stream disturbance levels caused by eddy Mach wave radiation. This type of wall design is required to obtain transition Reynolds numbers on tests models as high as those previously observed in supersonic flight vehicles. The Mach 3.5 pilot nozzle wall boundary layers were tested for Tollmein-Schlichting and Goertler linear amplification, and, in an analysis of Goertler vortices in two axisymmetric Mach 5 nozzles, transition values were found to vary. These values were applied to several nozzles with similar throat heights but different expansion rates. Among the nozzles included in the study, a flat-wall radial flow nozzle and a proposed rod-wall nozzle were tested. For the highest test unit Reynolds number, it was determined that the nozzle wall surface finish should not exceed 0.3 micron. Oil flow studies have indicated that Goertler vortex disturbances were the dominant mechanism causing transition on the walls of the pilot nozzle.

Servicers system demonstration plan and capability development

A plan for the demonstration of the exchange of Multi-Mission Modular Spacecraft (MMS) modules using the servicer mechanism Engineering Test Unit (ETU) was prepared and executed. The plan included: establishment of requirements, conceptual design, selection of MMS spacecraft mockup configuration, selection of MMS module mockup configuration, evaluation of adequacy of ETU load capability, and selection of a stowage rack arrangement. The MMS module exchange demonstration mockup equipment was designed, fabricated, checked out, shipped, installed, and demonstrated.

Servicer system demonstration plan and capability development

An orbital maneuvering vehicle (OMV) front end kit is defined which is capable of performing in-situ fluid resupply and modular maintenance of free flying spacecraft based on the integrated orbital servicing system (IOSS) concept. The compatibility of the IOSS to perform gas and fluid umbilical connect and disconnect functions utilizing connect systems currently available or in development is addressed. A series of tasks involving on-orbit servicing and the engineering test unit (ETU) of the on-orbit service were studied. The objective is the advancement of orbital servicing by expanding the Spacecraft Servicing Demonstration Plan (SSDP) to include detail demonstration planning using the Multimission Modular Spacecraft (MMS) and upgrading the ETU control.

Double lead spiral platen parallel jaw end effector

The double lead spiral platen parallel jaw end effector is an extremely powerful, compact, and highly controllable end effector that represents a significant improvement in gripping force and efficiency over the LaRC Puma (LP) end effector. The spiral end effector is very simple in its design and has relatively few parts. The jaw openings are highly predictable and linear, making it an ideal candidate for remote control. The finger speed is within acceptable working limits and can be modified to meet the user needs; for instance, greater finger speed could be obtained by increasing the pitch of the spiral. The force relaxation is comparable to the other tested units. Optimization of the end effector design would involve a compromise of force and speed for a given application.
